PDP, CUPP Demand Release Of Premium Times Reporter

Abuja – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) on Wednesday demanded for immediate release of Premium Times Newspapers reporter, Mr. Samuel Ogundipe, who was arrested and detained by the police over a report.
While PDP condemned the alleged denial of personal freedom and manhandling of the newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief, Musikilu Mojeed, and its education correspondent, Azeezat Adedigba by the police, CUPP described the detention as a mockery of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) reform.

PDP, in a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the party holds that the continued detention of Mr. Ogundipe is against his fundamental right to freedom as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The party insisted that the incessant clampdown on journalists and media houses by the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration is completely unacceptable in a democracy and only reminiscent of military Decree 4 of 1984 that empowers the then dictatorial regime to arrest and detain journalists over reports considered to be against its interest.
PDP, therefore, called on the media houses and all lovers of democracy and free speech in the country to speak out against the unabating assault on the media by the APC administration as such poses a huge threat to “our democracy and the rights of citizens in our country.”

CUPP, on its party, said that it received with rude shock the disturbing news of the arrest and detention of Premium times reporter, Mr. Ogundipe by the Nigeria Police for the sole reason he performed his constitutional duty as a journalist.
CUPP, in a statement by its spokesman, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, noted that the news came on a day Ag. President Osinbajo directed the Inspector General of Police to overhaul the SARS.

“Nigerians, especially the youths have for months persistently campaigned for the end of SARS and also a general reform of the Police based on incessant abuse of human lives, deaths of innocent citizens and extortion. However, the news arrest of Mr. Samuel Ogundipe drowns the anticipated goodwill the directive to overhaul SARS would have earned the government.
“We are also compelled to view the SARS directive as a facade, a smoke screen to douse the tension of the mockery of democracy by the arrest of Journalist Samuel Ogundipe. The coincidence of both actions cannot be overlooked.
“As the same Inspector General who carried out the overhaul directive is the same Inspector General who ordered for the arrest and detention of the innocent journalist.

“This arrest buttresses the allegations of the unsafe conditions journalists work in President Buhari’s APC led government. Citizen Jones Abiri is still in captivity more than two years after.
“It is on this premise that we call for the immediate release of Mr. Samuel Ogundipe and the removal of the freeze order on his salary account. We call for disciplinary actions against all officers who participated in this arrest and torture of an innocent citizen.
“We generally call on the Muhammadu Buhari led federal government and the All Progressive Congress to desist from further politicizing the Police and other security agencies. The Police is gradually turning into an arm of the ruling,” he said.
