Former Senate Minority leader, Godswill Akpabio of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the party, taking a swipe at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Akpabio dumped PDP in the presence of the Oshiomhole, BoLa Ahmed Tinubu and Nsima Ekere, managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and other stalwarts of the party.
The Acting President was represented by the Secretary to the federal government, Boss Mustapha.
Addressing a capacity crowd at the Ikot Ekpene Stadium shortly before Akpabio’s defection, Oshiomhole, the national chairman of APC praised Akpabio for joining the APC but berated the PDP for having mismanaged the economy of the country for 16 years. He said the PDP was dead and buried.
“We have often felt lonely in the south-south region of the country that it is only in Edo State that we have a APC governor. People had given the impression that Akwa Ibom belonged to PDP, but today what my eyes have seen is different,” he said.
He thanked the Senate for giving Akpabio the opportunity to serve as minority leader, adding that he had to surrender the crown of the PDP to join the APC.
“You have shown that we can stand up and be counted in the south-south. When we have a senator like Akpabio standing by me; can we be afraid?
“Let me assure you that on behalf of our national leader; on behalf of all the leaders and APC in all the states, we welcome you whole-heartedly to the APC. This afternoon, we have an uncommon rally. I say Akwa Ibom is united under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio. Akwa Ibom should be united for the purpose of change. Welcome on board,” he further said.
In his address, Akpabio said he would be part of the solution to bring development to the people; to solve the problem of the country, adding that uncommon transformation has come to Akwa Ibom State. He said he was ready to sweep away poverty and that the Niger Delta belongs to the APC.
Two members of the state House of Assembly- Nse Ntuen, who represents Essien Udim state constituency, where Akpabio hails from as well as Gabriel Toby representing Etim Ekpo state constituency in the same senatorial district- also defected with Akpabio.
Others who also defected include two members of the House of Representatives, Emman Ekon representing Abak, Ika, Etim Ekpo federal constituency and Emmanuel Akpan who represents Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State constituency.
Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State government has confirmed that its accounts have been frozen by the Federal Government.
A source close to the state executive council confirmed the freezing of the state government’s account but did not give details about when it occurred and the reason the FG took the action.
But observers say that it might not be unconnected with the arm-twisting tactics of the Federal Government mainly being applied in opposition states while turning a blind eye to states governed by the APC.
The commissioner for finance, Linus Nkang did not pick his calls neither did he respond to a text message sent to his phone number.

Those You Claimed Robbed Akwa Ibom For 16Years Are In APC, Nigerians To Oshiomhole

AFTER making his claims that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) robbed Akwa Ibom State for 16years, Adams Oshiomhole, the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) have been reminded by Nigerians that those who perpetuated the act were now in the ruling party.

Mr Oshiomhole on Wednesday while receiving the former governor of the state, Godswill Akpabio, claimed the opposition party squandered the resources of the state with nothing to show for it.

The former Edo State governor urged the people of the state not to be deceived by the PDP again.

“Please don’t be deceived. These are very tempting moments. Nigerians will know the difference between party A and party B,” TheCable quoted him as saying.

“I ask you, if a seasoned notorious armed robber who has been robbing you for 16 years; they tripled the robbery, they digitised the robbery… When you kick them out of office, they sponsor confusion here and there.

“But the people are saying no matter how you sponsor, we can see behind the facts,” Mr Oshiomhole said.

His submission did not go down with some Nigerians who reacted to his claim.

A look at Mr Oshiomhole's claim reveals that two former governors of the state who ruled during the period are now in the APC.

While Mr Victor Attah ruled the state from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007, Mr Akpabio, a serving senator, took his turn to rule the oil rich state from 29 May 2007 to 29 May 2015. The duo are now in the ruling party and after governing on the platform of the opposition party.

The incumbent governor, Udom Emmanuel, is having his own turn still on the platform of the PDP.

“Laughing at @OfficialAPCNg for saying @OfficialPDPNig destroyed Akwa-Ibom and then asking Akwa-Ibom people to accept an Akpabio who did 8 our of the PDP 16 years,” a tweet from Senator Ben Murray-Bruce read.

The national leader of the APC, Bola Tinubu, was also quoted as making same remarks against the PDP.

“How can Tinubu present Akpabio to Akwa-Ibom in one breath and in the next breath ask Akwa-Ibom to reject @OfficialPDPNig because PDP destroyed Akwa-Ibom for 16 years. Does he not see the contradiction? For 8 solid years out of those ‘16 years of destruction’ Akpabio was Governor!” said Reno Omokri via his twitter handle.

Nura Sabo Anku tweeting via @Nsa20 said: “From today Akpabio is the great saint of the South South crowned by @OfficialAPCNg through Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said @OfficialPDPNig spent 16years destroying Nigeria so Akwa-Ibom was ruled by good 8 solid years under the leader of Saint Akpabio. Akwa-Ibomite are witnessed.”
