Udom Lambasts Senator Akpabio, As PDP Mourns Exit Of Senate Minority Leader
#1
Governor Udom lambasts Senator Akpabio, as PDP mourns exit of senate minority leader.

Gov. Udom Emmanuel has dismissed his estranged godfather and Senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, as a greedy, insatiable man who wanted him to be his puppet. He was addressing an emergency PDP stakeholders meeting summoned to address the exit of the former governor from the party.

He told the meeting that he couldn’t surrender the government to the former governor to run from Abuja, hence, their parting of ways. He told the meeting that he did everything to please Akpabio but that he couldn’t be satisfied.

He opened up to the meeting that he had to resort to legal tactics to stop the EFCC from probing how the former governor spent state funds when he was in power but yet he couldn’t be satisfied.

The governor said his estranged godfather is too proud, egoistic and arrogant and that it took him a lot to condone him.

But some of the stakeholders who spoke at the meeting lamented that the party is in big trouble in the state as so many people may follow Akpabio to APC.

A lawmaker hinted that some members of the house of Assembly are on their way out of the party. The meeting agreed that some chieftains of the party be watch listed as they may be moles for Akpabio who’s all out to dislodge Udom from power come next election.

On the 2019 election, the governor told the meeting to brace up for tough and rough times as they are plans by the APC to rig him out of power using federal might and INEC.

The governor was advised to rid the government of all the Akpabio men.

The Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, is defecting from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a presidential aide has said.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Prosecution, Okoi Obono-Obla, posted a message on Facebook, Saturday night, saying that Mr Akpabio will be received into APC on Thursday by the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and other top leaders of the party at a rally in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom state.

Quote:All things being equal, former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, may leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) this week and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a presidential aide has disclosed.

Special Assistant on Prosecution to President Muhammadu Buhari, Okoi Obono-Obla, posted on Facebook, Saturday night, a message saying Akpabio will be received into APC on Thursday by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and other top leaders of the party at a rally in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. Obono-Obla also posted a photo of Akpabio with APC national leader, Bola Tinubu.

Akpabio, who has already taken some conscious steps as regards his anticipated defection, was said to have met with Buhari in London, where the president is currently spending a 10-day vacation. The former Akwa IIbom State governor had earlier met with Osinbajo in Abuja last week, in what is believed to be to a move to properly situate his defection plan.

But sources within the PDP, which appeared not to be disturbed by the development, dismissed Akpabio as one big mole it had to deal with over time, noting that he has divulged virtually all the party’s plans and strategies to the opposition in an alleged attempt to secure protection from prosecution.

THISDAY gathered last night that the speculation about Akpabio’s imminent exit from the PDP was beyond rumour, as he was said to have met with practically everyone that matters in the party.

Sources hinted that baring any last minute change, the defection ceremony had already been slated to hold this week, not later than mid-week at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the state capital.

Although sources hinted that the former governor of Akwa Ibom State had tried to leave the PDP with some senators from the state, everyone he approached was said to have rebuffed his advice, because according to them, the APC stood no chance in the state, let alone the region.

THISDAY gathered that the APC government had shown Akpabio a dossier on some of his alleged atrocities as governor, including monies said to have been stashed in different places, through the EFCC. Joining the ruling party was alleged to be a condition given to him to avoid prosecution for corruption. The former governor was said to have reluctantly accepted the condition.

However, disappointed PDP leaders, who spoke to THISDAY on condition of anonymity, said they had since known about Akpabio’s predicament and encouraged him to fight on and not give in to the APC threat.

“But because his hands, too, are not clean, they were able to box him to a very bad corner,” the source said, adding, “His options, we believe, were limited. But he had done so much damage to us. He was our biggest mole. He held strategy meetings with us and went back to divulge all to the APC just to save face. We won’t miss him; he can go.

“However, the one thing that his defection will prove to Nigeria is the hypocrisy of the ruling party. We will see their reaction and that of their supporters, who almost killed those who left the APC to join the PDP recently. We are waiting to see the fallout and this is, indeed, interesting.”

One of PDP sources said they started noticing Akpabio’s double agent moves, when he started making a case for the reconvening of the National Assembly, as being pushed by the APC.

The source said Akpabio had already agreed to do a letter of the opposition agreeing to the reconvening, which is one of the requirements, before the PDP leaders told him they would deny him if he went ahead to write such a letter on behalf of the opposition, knowing full well it was not in the national interest.

But Akpabio, sources said, immediately travelled to see the president to personally seal his defection deal and secure assurances of non-prosecution from him. It added that he was not very satisfied with his meeting with Osinbajo, even though it was said to be productive.

He was said to have contended that personally meeting with the president was important to him before taking the option of defection to the APC, adding that such a meeting would help to sufficiently arm him to talk to others, who might be disposed to defecting with him.

It was as a result of this that some of the close aides of the president, including a top and prominent security person in the presidency, who is believed to be coordinating the current engagement with the National Assembly, facilitated the meeting between him and the president in London.

Although still in London, Akpabio is expected back in the country this week to perfect his defection arrangement and ceremony before the end of the week.

Meanwhile, THISDAY has gathered that Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel did not receive the news of the proposed defection of his godfather well but has resolved to move on regardless.

Sources noted that the relationship between the two leaders was not very cordial, as they have had to expose their differences over political and financial matters.

THISDAY learnt that other PDP governors in the South-south had also promised to rally round Emmanuel, saying they would not allow the federal government to intimidate him through Akpabio.

Akpabio meets Buhari in London: Strikes Senate Presidency deal, more than 10 House of assembly members to defect with him.

Embattled former governor of Akwa Ibom state, MR Godswill Akpabio, has finally met with President Muhammadu Buhari in London after striking a deal that has cemented his defection move to the ruling All Progressives Congress last Friday.

Propellerng.com learnt on good authority that a deal has been struck between the APC and Akpabio that the former governor be made to succeed Mr Bukola Saraki as senate president after he (Akpabio) delivers Akwa Ibom state to the APC in the 2019 election.

Propeller Newspapers had last week exclusively reported Akpabio’s planned exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, the platform on which he served as governor for 8 years and was subsequently elected senate minority leader in 2015.

Akpabio had recently faced threats of arrests by the country’s anti-graft agencies on grounds of massive corruption during his reign as governor if he failed to defect to support the president in 2018.

Sources close to the former governor accuse incumbent Governor Udom Emmanuel of not doing enough to protect Akpabio from the ruling party’s threats.

”Udom betrayed Akpabio by opening him up to the scavenging federal government. He didn’t do enough to cover the tracks, and this is the result”, one of Akpabio’s senior aides said in an anonymous interview granted Propeller Newspapers Saturday night.

According to him, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission “could not have come this close to unearthing everything during Oga’s era if Udom had not maliciously cooperated with them by allowing them unrestrained access to classified financial documents”, the aide said referring to the massive thievery and misappropriation of public funds during the Akpabio era.
More than 800billion Naira is believed to have been stolen by Akpabio and his cronies within 8 years.

Authentic sources confirm that the EFCC have evidences of foreign currencies stashed away by Akpabio in his country home and in foreign nations which they believe is part of the stolen resources of the state.

But rather than press charges against him, “they seek to take political advantage of the helpless man by forcing him to work for the APC in 2019”, a top government functionary in Abuja confided in our Group Political Editor last week.

Akpabio to defect on Wednesday with 5 House of Reps, more than 10 House of assembly members.

__________
In an exclusive chat last night with Propeller Newspapers, presidential aide and former senator Ita Enang has confirmed the defection of senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I can confirm that he is coming to the All Progressives Congress. There will be a grand reception for His Excellency (Akpabio) on Wednesday and for others who will be coming with him.”

Propeller Newspapers can confirm that former Governor Akpabio was today issued his membership card of the ruling party.

We can also confirm that some political heavyweights mostly from Ikot Ekpene senatorial district are moving with Akpabio to the APC.

They include former works commissioner in the state, Mr Don Etim, former senator Effiong Bob, Leader of the House, Mr Udo Kieran Akpan, former Speaker and House of Reps member for Etinan Federal Constituency, Mr Sam Ikon, respective House of Reps members from Abak and Essien Edim/Etim Ekpo/Ika, Mr Emmanuel Akpan and Mr Emmanuel Ekon, former Information Commissioner, Mr Aniekan Umanah, state House of Assembly members, Nse Ntuen, Usoro Akpanusoh, Aniekan Uko, Aniekan Bassey, Idongesit Ntekpere, Uduak Ududoh, Mark Esset, among others. At least 10 house members are said to be ready to defect to the APC with Akpabio.

Also defecting are Mr Victor Antai, serving commissioner for Culture and Tourism in the state as well as Ibanga Akpabio, commissioner for Labour and Manpower Development.

Chairmen of Ikot Ekpene and Essien Udim are said to have also signed on to the defection plan.

Speaker Onofiok Luke and Senator Bassey Albert are said to have defied Akpabio’s request to move with them to the APC.

In a meeting with stakeholders of the PDP at the banquet hall of government house on Saturday night, Governor Udom Emmanuel called on partymen to brace for a “rough and tough” battle in 2019.
