A black Atlanta man died after he was shot by a white police officer in a fast-food drive-thru late Friday night.
 
The victim,  Rayshard Brooks, 27, was shot during a struggle and died after surgery at a local hospital, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. One officer was treated for an injury and discharged.
 
Brooks had been asleep in his car in a Wendy’s drive-thru, causing other customers to drive around the car, the Bureau of Investigation said. Police were dispatched to the Wendy’s around 10:30 p.m. and conducted a sobriety test on Brooks, who failed the test, according to the officials.
 
“During the arrest, the male subject resisted and a struggle ensued,” the Bureau of Investigation said. “The officer deployed a Taser. Witnesses report that during the struggle the male subject grabbed and was in possession of the Taser. It has also been reported that the male subject was shot by an officer in the struggle over the Taser.”
 
In a video captured by a man from his car, Rayshard is seen struggling on the ground with two police officers over the Taser. As he stood up and started running away, both cops chased him from behind before one of them fired three-times at Rayshard. 
 
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation later released a surveillance video which captured the officer who fired three shots to Rayshard's back until he collapsed to the ground.
 

 
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, Jr. said in a statement Saturday that his office had already launched an “intense, independent” investigation of the incident, and that members of his office were on the scene shortly after the shooting.
 
“Our thoughts and our sympathies are extended to the family of Rayshard Brooks as we must not forget that this investigation is centered upon a loss of life,” Howard said.
 
Angry protesters gathered outside the Wendy’s late Friday night and again on Saturday 
 
In a statement Saturday, the Georgia NAACP called for Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to be held “accountable for the continued threat on innocent Black lives in their community.”
 
“Atlantans woke up to disturbing videos and reports of Rayshard being killed by the Atlanta Police Department. At this time, we must address the over-saturated police presence in Atlanta’s Black communities. This is not the first time a Black man was killed for sleeping,” the organization said in a statement. “The City of Atlanta must address this not only with their words, but also with their actions and budgetary decisions.”
 
The latest incident comes amid a series of protests against police brutality and racial discrimination. The mass protests were triggered by the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed as a white Minneapolis police officer held his knee into Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes.

Atlanta police chief, Erika Shields resigns amid backlash over fatal shooting of a black man







Atlanta police chief, Erika Shields has resigned amid backlash over the fatal shooting of a black man by a white officer during a struggle.
 
Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms announced on Saturday at a press conference that the city's police chief had submitted her resignation after roughly 150 protesters marched outside Wendy’s restaurant where Rayshard Brooks, 27, was fatally shot late Friday. 
 
Bottoms said it was Police Chief Erika Shields' own decision to resign from the role, which she took in 2016. According to Bottoms, she will remain with the city in an undetermined position.
 
The mayor also said she called for the immediate firing of the officer who opened fire at Brooks.
 
"Because of her desire that Atlanta be a model of what meaningful reform should look like across this country, Chief Shields has offered to immediately step aside as Police Chief so that the city may move forward with urgency and rebuilding the trust so desperately needed throughout our communities," Bottoms said. 
 
Interim Corrections Chief Rodney Bryant will serve as interim police chief until a permanent replacement is found.

The Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation, which will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Atlanta protesters block interstate, set fire to restaurant where police killed black man (Photos/Videos)







On Saturday night, angry protesters set fire to Wendy's fast-food restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, where police fatally shot and killed Rayshard Brooks, 27. Read previous post here. 
 

 
The protesters surrounded the restaurant and later made their way to Interstate 75/85 bringing traffic to a standstill as they clashed with police. The Wendy's burned for more than an hour before firefighters extinguished the flames.
 

 
The white Atlanta Police officer involved in the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks has been fired, while his colleague was placed on administrative leave. 
 

 
In a statement, Atlanta Police spokesman Carlos Campos said Garrett Rolfe, a six-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department, was fired, and a second officer, Devin Bronsan, a nearly two-year veteran, was placed on administrative leave for their involvement in the death of Rayshard Brookson Friday night.
 
Brooks' death also led to the resignation of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields amid backlash over the fatal shooting.

Atlanta police officer who shot Rayshard Brooks charged with felony murder









The white Atlanta police officer, Garret Rolfe who shot and killed a black man, Rayshard Brooks, in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant will face a charge of felony murder and 10 other charges.

 

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said Garrett Rolfe, who fired the fatal shots at Rayshard Brooks, could face a possible sentence of life without parole or the death penalty. 

“We’ve concluded at the time that Mr. Brooks was shot that he did not pose an immediate threat of death,” Howard said.

 

Rolfe, who has since been fired from the police department, was also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and violations of office, and other offenses punishable by decades behind bar.

 

The other officer, Devin Brosnan, who remains with the Atlanta Police Department and has been placed on administrative desk duty, is also facing charges. Among them is aggravated assault, which carries a possible sentence of one to 20 years in prison.

 

The district attorney said Brosnan is cooperating with prosecutors and will testify, saying it was the first time in 40 such cases in which an officer had come forward to do so. But an attorney for Brosnan emphatically denied he had agreed to be a prosecution witness and said he was not pleading guilty to anything.

 

Arrests warrants have been issued for both men.

 

The decision to bring charges comes five days after the officers were called to a Wendy's fast-food restaurant. They found Brooks asleep in his car, and he admitted to officers that he had been drinking earlier.

Rayshard Brooks shooting: Trump says police not being treated fairly









President Donald Trump has reacted to the shooting at Rayshard Brooks which led to an Atlanta police officer, Garrett Rolfe being charged with felony murder on Wednesday June 17. 

 

Though Prosecutors said Brooks posed no threat when he was gunned down and that the white officer kicked him and offered no medical treatment as he laid dying on the ground, Trump insisted that the police has not been treated fairly as no one should "resist a police officer”. 

 

Speaking on a Fox interview, the US President also said he heard an explanation from Rolfe’s lawyer that the officer heard a sound like a gunshot and saw a flash in front of him.

 

He said; 

 

“I don’t know that I would have necessarily believed that, but I will tell you, that’s a very interesting thing and maybe that’s so. They are going to have to find out. It’s up to justice right now. It’s going to be up to justice. I hope he gets a fair shake because police have not been treated fairly in our country. They have not been treated fairly.”

 

Atlanta mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms had said the morale in the police department was “down ten-fold” due to the charges.

In an interview with CNN on Wednesday night, Bottoms said “we expect our officers will keep their commitment to our communities” amid reports that officers were calling in sick.
