Patric Bites Giulio Donati In Serie A Match, Sent Of

Lazio's Patric was sent off for biting late on in a loss at Lecce that dealt a massive blow to their title hopes.

Defender Patric was shown a straight red card for biting Lecce's Giulio Donati on the arm in injury time.

Felipe Caicedo had scored a fifth-minute opener for the visitors but Khouma Babacar headed in Filippo Falco's cross to level on 30 minutes.

Struggling Lecce completed the turnaround after half-time, as defender Fabio Lucioni headed in from a corner.

Simone Inzaghi's Lazio remain seven points behind leaders Juventus, who themselves lost 4-2 against AC Milan.

A disappointing evening for Lazio was further soured by Patric's indefensible bite on Donati, identified clearly by a video assistant referee review.

As the Lecce defender organised his team-mates to defend a set-piece with outstretched arms, Patric lent in from behind and bit Donati just above the elbow,

The hosts had responded well to their early set-back, having also seen Marco Mancuso's third-minute goal disallowed by VAR due to a handball in the build-up.

Mancuso then blazed a penalty over the bar at the end of a lively first half, after the ball had struck Patric on the arm.

Serie A's leading goalscorer Ciro Immobile was denied at close range by Lecce goalkeeper Gabriel as Lazio suffered a third defeat in five games since the league restarted.

Arteta Says He "Does Not Understand The Rules" After VAR Sent Off Arsenal Player

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he does not understand the use of pitch-side monitors in the Premier League after the decision to send off Eddie Nketiah in the 1-1 draw with Leicester.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially showed Nketiah a yellow card for his high tackle on Justin James.

But after consulting with the VAR officials and viewing a replay himself, he changed this to red.

"In the last year I have never seen a referee check any images," said Arteta.

"I do not understand the rules. But I can do nothing now."

Arteta was also unhappy at a challenge by a Leicester player he felt should have resulted in a red card that he identified as happening between the 40th and 45th minute.

It is likely he was referring to a clash between Jamie Vardy and Shkodran Mustafi, in which the Foxes striker caught the defender in the face with his heel. This went unpunished.

"It can be a red card but then Leicester have to play with 10 men," Arteta told Sky Sports. "For an incident that happened between the 40th and 45th minute, it has to be a red card as well."

In January this year, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the body that manages elite referees, issued guidance that referees should start using pitchside monitors for red card decisions where it is felt they should have the final say.

Prior to that, the only time the monitors have been used in 2019-20 is by Michael Oliver in an FA Cup third-round tie between Crystal Palace and Derby County.

As a result, he upgraded a yellow card for Palace's Luka Milivojevic to a red.

This approach has not been witnessed often since then, with the most notable occasion coming in the game between Southampton and Newcastle in March, when referee Graham Scott upgraded Moussa Djenepo's yellow to a red after consulting the pitchside monitor.

I am president, coach and player at Milan - Zlatan Ibrahimovic brags after helping club defeat Juventus

Football star, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has praised himself claiming he would have helped Italian club AC Milan win the Serie A had he been signed at the start of the season, after he helped the club beat league leaders Juventus 4-2 on Tuesday  July 7.

Ibrahimovic, 38, returned to Milan where he previously won the Scudetto in 2011 as a free agent in January after leaving MLS and the LA Galaxy.

The former Manchester United and Barcelona player scored from the penalty spot against Juve on Tuesday and put to bed efforts from Adrien Rabiot and Cristiano Ronaldo with Franck Kessie, Rafael Leao.

A three-goal flurry within five minutes helped shrink that deficit, with Rebic scoring the game's final goal to seal an 18-minute span of dominance for Milan.

With the victory, Milan are up to fifth as they have beaten title rivals Lazio and Juve in consecutive matches.

Reacting to their recent wins, Ibrahimovic said he would have made the club more successful had he been signed earlier.

Ibrahimovic told DAZN: "If I was here from the beginning of the season, we would have won the Scudetto!"

Ibrahimovic who has been hailed as a role model for his Milan team-mates added: "I am president, coach and player, but they only pay me as a footballer."

The former Sweden international is out of contract at the end of the season, however, and has revealed he might not play for Milan after this season.

"There is still a month, so let's see," Ibrahimovic said amid growing speculation head coach Stefano Pioli will be replaced by Ralf Rangnick. "There are things that we cannot in control.

"Playing without fans is a pity, a strange situation. We do our job, we are professionals. It could have been the last time they have seen me live in San Siro."

Tottenham midfielder, Eric Dier banned for four matches and fined £40, 000 after jumping into crowd to confront a fan

England and Tottenham midfielder, Eric Dier has been banned for four matches and fined £40,000 for jumping into the crowd to confront a fan following his club's FA Cup defeat to Norwich City.

The 26-year-old was left furious after a penalty shootout loss to the Canaries in their fifth-round tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in March. In an attempts to protect his brother who he noticed was being abused by an angry fan, he left the pitch and entered the stands.

There was no physical exchange between Dier and the angry fan, but the Football Association has now sanctioned the footballer who admitted his actions were 'improper' but denied that they were also 'threatening.'

FA opted to punish Dier for a breach of rule E3.

It said in a statement: "Eric Dier has been suspended for four matches with immediate effect, fined £40,000 and warned as to his future conduct following a breach of FA Rule E3.

"The Tottenham Hotspur FC player admitted that his actions at the conclusion of a fixture against Norwich City FC in the FA Cup on March 4, 2020, were improper but denied that they were also threatening.

"An independent Regulatory Commission subsequently found Eric Dier's actions to be threatening."

The punishment rules Dier out from Spurs' upcoming games against Bournemouth, Arsenal, Newcastle, and Leicester, and he will only be available for the club's last game of the season against Crystal Palace.

Quote:Ikpeba Wants Saka To Play For Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has waxed lyrical about Bukayo Saka and wants the Arsenal youngster to play for the three-time African champions at the international level, reports Completesports.com.

Saka has come in for huge praise this season following a number of impressive performances for the Gunners.

The 18-year-old recently signed a new long-term deal at the Emirates and has since celebrated with a goal and an assist in consecutive games.

Born in Ealing, Saka has Nigerian parents and is therefore eligible to play for the West Africans.

The versatile winger will however have to apply for a change of nationality should he decide to switch allegiance having represented England at youth level.

He already has four goals in 10 appearances for the England U-19’s.

Following another superb display for Arsenal in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium, Ikpeba, a member of Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winning squad is eager to see Saka play for the Super Eagles.

“Watching the Arsenal Vs Leicester City game and I think Gernot Rohr should invite Bukayo Saka to the Super Eagles camp once the paperwork have been concluded,” Ikpeba tweeted.

Super Eagles head Gernot Rohr coach made it clear in an interview with ESPN in June that Saka will need to make the first move, as Nigeria will not come begging for his services.

The likes of Joe Aribo of Rangers, Semi Ajayi of West Brom, Viv Solomon-Otabor of CSKA Sofia, Josh Maja of Bordeaux, and Ola Aina of Torino are all current Nigerian international who were all born in England, specifically London.

Meanwhile, Saka’s former Arsenal team-mate Alex Iwobi and Chelsea’s Victor Moses were born in Nigeria but raised in England and both represented their adopted nation at youth level.

Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu, who plays for Genk in Belgium has tested positive for Coronavirus.

According to Belgian news hub, HLN Sport, all players of the club were tested on Tuesday, July 7, in the run-up to the first friendly game ahead of the new season. They all tested negative except Onuachu.

The 26-year-old who made his Super Eagles debut last year had only recently returned to his Belgian club for pre-season after he accompanied Victor Osimhen for his father’s burial in Nigeria.

Onuachu will now miss Genk’s first exhibition game of the season against Eendracht Termien on Thursday, July 9, as he will be quarantined for a week.

Onuachu joined Genk from Danish club FC Midtjylland in August 2019.

Aston Villa vs Man Utd: Solskjaer set to break EPL record

 July 8, 2020
[Image: olegunnarsolskjaer-cropped_1lpvm6ctev1vd...w75pqp.jpg]

Manchester United will set a new Premier League record if they win by more than three goals at Aston Villa on Thursday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is in the middle of a 16-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

United are in form having won 10 points from a possible 12 since the Premier League’s resumption.
Since drawing with Tottenham in June, the Red Devils have seen off Sheffield United, Brighton and Bournemouth.

And should they win by three or more goals at Villa Park today, they will set a Premier League record for consecutive wins by at least three goals.

Sheffield United and Brighton were cast aside 3-0 before they beat Bournemouth 5-2.

Suarez Scores As Barcelona Win Relegates Espanyol From La Liga

Barcelona kept alive their hopes of winning La Liga with a victory over Espanyol at the Nou Camp that also relegated the visitors.

Both sides had a player sent off early in the second half after video assistant referee reviews.

Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati was dismissed for a foul on Fernando Calero before Pol Lozano was red carded for a dangerous tackle.

Luis Suarez then smashed home a loose ball to secure the three points.

The win means Barcelona are a point behind leaders Real Madrid.

However, Real could restore their four-point advantage when they host Alaves on Friday.

Suarez's goal meant he became Barcelona's outright third-highest scorer as he took his tally for the club to 195 goals.

The former Liverpool striker sits behind Cesar Rodriguez Alvarez (232) and Lionel Messi (630) in Barcelona's all-time top scorer list.

The defeat for Barcelona's city rivals Espanyol ended their already slim hopes of retaining their La Liga status.

They are bottom of the table on 24 points, 11 adrift of safety with just three games remaining.

The visitors had been unlucky not to take the lead towards the end of an otherwise forgettable first half when Marc-Andre ter Stegen did well to prevent Clement Lenglet scoring an own goal before Didac Vila hit the post from the loose ball.

A brilliant save by Diego Lopez denied Lionel Messi adding to Suarez's goal with a powerful volley to give Espanyol hope of an unlikely comeback but Barcelona closed the game out to secure the win.

EPL: Man Utd put 6 players for sale to fund sancho’s transfer [Full list]

 July 9, 2020
[Image: 1189682923.jpg.0.jpg]

Manchester United is ready to sell at least six players this summer transfer window, as it looks to fund a move for Borussia Dortmund winger, Jadon Sancho.
DAILY POST recalls that Man United remain favourite to agree to a deal for Sancho this summer.

Dortmund has already told Man United to sign Sancho before August 10.
Man United have seen their revenue streams hit hard because of the COVID-19 pandemic and will have less money to spend this summer.

The Red Devils’ executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, is hoping he can sell some of the club’s fringe players to raise funds for Sancho, who has a £115million price tag on his head.

According to the Athletic, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Alexis Sanchez, Marcos Rojo, Diogo Dalot and Jesse Lingard could all leave Old Trafford this summer.

Smalling, Sanchez and Rojo are on loan at AS Roma, Inter Milan and Estudiantes respectively.

Lingard, Dalot and Jones are not regular starters under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

Transfer: Mesut Ozil takes final decision on future with Arsenal, chooses new club

 July 9, 2020
[Image: Mesut-Ozil.jpg]

Arsenal Playmaker, Mesut Ozil has decided to stay at Emirates until his current contract with the club expires.

Ozil has also told close friends that he wants to play for a club in the USA or Turkey when he leaves the Gunners, Sun Sports reports.

His current contract at Arsenal will expire in the summer of 2021.

Before the coronavirus enforced break, Ozil featured in all games since Arteta took over from Unai Emery last December.

However, Ozil has fallen out of favour under Arteta in recent weeks.

The former Germany international was omitted from the Arsenal squad that played 1-1 with Leicester City on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Arteta has since told Ozil that he will be restored to the team
when he “can give his best”.

“Again, I am the first one who wants Mesut at his best. I will put him on the pitch when I think he can give his best,” Arteta said

EPL: Man Utd equal penalty record in 3-0 win over Aston Villa

 July 10, 2020
[Image: olegunnarsolskjaer.jpg]

Manchester United were awarded their 13th penalty of the season during a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Thursday night.

It means that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have equalled the record for spot-kicks awarded in a single Premier League campaign.

Replays showed that that Bruno Fernandes made contact with Ezri Konsa just inside the area.

Fernandes tried to pull off a turn, but ended up colliding into Konsa and catching him on the ankle.
Referee Jon Moss awarded a penalty and was supported by a VAR review.

Fernandes stepped up to make it 1-0, before further goals from Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba.

United has now drawn level with the Crystal Palace team in 2004/2005 and Leicester City’s title-winning side in 2015/2016, as the only teams to be awarded 13 penalties in one season.

It means with four matches remaining for United in the 2019/20 season, they are just one shy of breaking the record

EPL confirms VAR made wrong decision on Man Utd penalty against Aston Villa

 July 10, 2020

The Premier League has said there were incorrect VAR decisions in all the games played on Thursday night.
This includes the penalty which set up Manchester United’s 3-0 win at Aston Villa.

United and Southampton were both awarded penalties in their games, while Tottenham were denied a spot-kick which the Premier League said should have been given.

Bruno Fernandes opened scoring for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at Villa Park, after referee Jon Moss pointed to the spot following his collision with Ezri Konsa.

Replays showed it was Fernandes who actually stepped on Konsa’s ankle as they came together.

BBC’s Match of the Day contacted the Premier League Match Centre, where the top-flight’s VAR hub is based at Stockley Park, who told them: “Wrong decision.”

Champions League: UEFA confirms venue for Man City vs Real Madrid, Bayern vs Chelsea

 July 10, 2020
[Image: UEFA.jpg]

UEFA have confirmed that Manchester City will host Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Etihad.

There were concerns about playing the last-16 fixtures in different countries because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

However, the clubs who were due to be at home – City, Bayern Munich (vs. Chelsea), Juventus (vs. Lyon) and Barcelona (vs. Napoli) – insisted they should be able to play on their own grounds, having already played the first leg away from home.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and the finals will be played in Lisbon, Portugal.

City lead Real Madrid 2-1 ahead of the return leg and were keen not to surrender home advantage.

All ties will now be played as scheduled, with Bayern Munich hosting Chelsea (first leg 3-0), Barcelona playing Napoli at the Camp Nou (1-1) and Juventus at home to Lyon (0-1).

EPL: Solskjaer criticizes Man Utd’s strikers after 3-0 win at Aston Villa

 July 10, 2020

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on Thursday criticised his side’s finishing in their 3-0 win against Aston Villa.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer said his forward line must learn to be more “clinical”.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Mason Greenwood smashed in his 16th goal of the season.

Paul Pogba scored his first goal of the campaign after the break, as United became the first team to score three or more in four consecutive Premier League fixtures.

The win means United are just one point short of Leicester City in fourth and two points below Chelsea in third.

With such fine margins between the teams, goal difference could become a factor for a Champions League spot and Solskjaer says he was unhappy with his side for failing to score more against Villa.

“I don’t know about how other teams feel when they play us but we scored three today.

“If we’re talking about goal difference then the defenders have done their jobs [with the clean sheet] but we created chances and we could have scored three, four or five more.

“Of course you’re happy with the way in which we create chances but you have to be more clinical,” he said.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta gives opinion on Jose Mourinho ahead of their first North London derby

Arsenal coach, Mikel Arteta has given his opinion on Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho, ahead of Arsenal’s showdown with Tottenham labeled 'the North London derby'.

Both managers will slug it out for the first time on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm) in the Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it will be the first time both coaches experience coaching a club in a north London derby as well.

Arsenal drew 2-2 at home to Spurs way back at the start of September in the reverse fixture this season. That was when Unai Emery and Mauricio Pochettino were still in charge of the respective teams.

Neither club has enjoyed a successful season, with both struggling to even qualify for the Europa League as the Premier League campaign finally nears its end

In a recent interview, Arteta revealed how highly he thinks of two-time Champions League winner and three-time Premier League champion Mourinho.

When asked whether Mourinho was still a world-class manager, Arsenal boss Arteta said: “Absolutely.

“They have had some up and downs, but overall you can clearly see what he wants to bring to the club.

“He manages the energy, the momentum and established a really strong culture in a strong football club that does it. And as well, he makes sure that he wins, and he has won in every single club that he has been.

“Obviously the situation, the timing when he arrived, is different than starting a new project right from the summer, but I am sure he will be successful.

“He has always been. He always finds the right way to do it and it will take him a bit of time, but I am sure he will do it.”
Arteta added: “He has a very clear way of playing, a clear way of how he manages games.

“I think clean sheets are obviously a big thing that he wants to do, but his teams - don’t forget - always score a lot of goals. They have been really successful and they have been able to win titles because of that

.
“I think in a long period they [Tottenham] have had a lot of injuries. So he hasn’t had the chance to be consistent as well with his team and that’s a big disadvantage that they have.

“I know he has done it. I know people have worked with him and he always finds a way to be successful and I am sure he will do it again.”

Tammy Abraham's contract with Chelsea extended to 2023

Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham, has had his contract with the football club extended by another year to 2023 after a clause was activated as he reached 15 Premier League goals.

The Nigeria/England striker scored in Chelsea's 3-2 win over Crystal Palace, taking his tally to 15 goals the minimum requirement if his contract was to be extended beyond 2022.

"It will be really important for Tammy because he is desperate for goals," Lampard told reporters on Friday.

"He hasn’t scored a for a while, it helps his confidence and it is good for me. It gives me other options. He came on later in the game, he scored the winning goal and I'm pleased for my strikers."

Abraham is currently paid about £50,000 a week and coach Frank Lampard says the striker shouldn't be thinking of getting new salary terms  now but rather getting back to form.

"I think on Tammy’s contract we’re not at a critical level with it and I’ll leave that between him and the club to discuss that side of it,"  Lampard told reporters.

"I don’t think it’s something in his mind now. It certainly shouldn’t be.

"What needs to be in his mind now is these games we have coming up and how much he can give us on the pitch, whether he’s coming on as a sub or starting games. He has had a really good season.

"He hasn’t scored so much in the second half of the season and as a young player, it’s always clear that when you have those periods there’s only one way out of it and that’s work and repetition in training and trying to make the most out of every moment you get.

"I just think that’s where Tammy’s at. The contract will hopefully look after itself. It’s between him and the club."
