Tottenham Hotspur announce the £20m signing of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton in a five-year deal (photos)







Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton.
 
The 25-year-old Denmark international who underwent his medical at the club's training ground on Monday August 10, penned a five-year deal with Jose Mourinho's side for a fee of £20million.  
 

 
Hojbjerg will wear the No 5 shirt vacated by Jan Vertonghen who left the club at the end of the season. 
 
After completing his move, Hojbjerg told Tottenham's official website: 'What was very important to me is I wanted to play in a club where I could see myself for many years. Tottenham was the one. I'm very proud, very happy, excited.
 
'I think there's a fantastic future ahead for the Club and I wanted so much to be a part of that.'

Man Utd could hijack Chelsea’s move for Kai Havertz

Manchester United could hijack Chelsea’s bid to sign Kai Havertz if they cannot get a deal done for Jadon Sancho, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Havertz is widely expected to move to Stamford Bridge this summer.


But the Bayer Leverkusen star has previously been linked with Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool.


Sancho is United’s top target this summer, but the club is finding it hard to strike a deal, as Borussia Dortmund continue to play hardball over the £100million-rated winger.

And while United have not given up hope of signing the 20-year-old, if they continue to be frustrated they could turn instead to Havertz.

Transfer: Solskjaer keeps ‘promise’ as Man Utd forward is set to leave club

Man United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has kept the ‘promise’ he made in March to the club’s forward, Tahith Chong.


Chong is expected to join German side Werder Bremen on a two-season loan from Man United this summer.



He recently rejected interest from several clubs across Europe to extend his contract at Man United until 2022.
The 20-year-old is rated high at Old Trafford but has found opportunities difficult to come by.

The Dutch youngster made just 12 first-team appearances during this season.


However, Solskjaer then promised Chong in March that he would be permitted to leave Old Trafford on loan so as to aid his development, according to Chong’s agent, Erkan Alkan.


“Mr Solskjaer kept his promise from March and told Tahith that he could leave the club,” Alkan told Bild.

La Liga side, Valencia have reportedly put their entire squad up for sale in a bid to raise money as the Coronavirus pandemic has devastated the club's finances. 
 
According to Spanish newspaper, Marca, Valencia have been hit hard and need to "make some cash" and sell players on "big salaries".
 
The Spanish club have already sold winger Ferran Torres, 20, to Manchester City for £37million last week, midfielder Francis Coquelin, 29, to La Liga rivals Villarreal, with the club's Dani Parejo, 31, also set to move the same direction. 
 
New boss Javi Gracia, who was appointed at the end of July, has reportedly been told that any of his players could be sold.
 
The former Watford coach is expected to only keep potential captain Jose Gaya, who is also linked with a move to Barcelona.

A Watford player and two members of non-playing staff were among six positive tests for coronavirus in the first round of Premier League testing.
 
On Tuesday, the Premier League announced that six positive Covid-19 results returned from a total of ?748 tests were carried out on players and club staff on Sunday and Monday. 
 
The club confirmed the news late on Tuesday that a player and two members of non-playing staff tested positive for Coronavirus.
 
A club statement said: "Watford Football Club confirms that three people have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus following testing at the training ground over the past 48 hours.
 
"Of those three positive tests, one is a player and two are members of staff. All three have asked that medical confidentiality be respected and, therefore, the club will not be naming those involved.
 
"All three will now self-isolate for seven days - in line with the protocols set out in Premier League guidelines - before being tested again at a later date.
 
"Strict adherence to the Premier League guidelines has ensured the training ground remains virus-free and a safe environment for the players to continue to work.
 
"The club will continue to liaise closely with the affected personnel and there will be no further comment."
 
Watford captain Troy Deeney has previously spoken out against the restart of the Premier League amid the ongoing pandemic, stating that he doesn't plan to put his family at risk for a return to football.
 
Burnley also announced in a statement that assistant manager Ian Woan tested positive for Coronavirus. 
 
"Burnley Football Club can confirm that after completing a Covid-19 test on Sunday, 17th May, assistant manager Ian Woan has tested positive," the club said in a statement released on Tuesday evening.
 
"The Burnley first-team squad and playing staff were all tested last weekend, ahead of a return to training."
 
Burnley added that it would "continue to follow the first stage of the return to training protocol, while adhering to Premier League guidance in terms of testing all players and backroom staff twice per week".

Lionel Messi has been named as the richest player in world football ahead of his arch rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. 
 
In the list compiled by France Football for the top 10 best-paid players in 2019, the Barcelona superstar who earns £500k per week made a staggering £120million last year, £11m more than his rival. 
 
Ronaldo who is on £688k per week salary at Juventus, made £109million last year. 
 
The duo are the only players to surpass the £100m mark on the list which was made up from their wages, bonuses, endorsements, commercial revenue, and other streams.

Turkish Super Lig outfit Fenerbahce are keen to sign Kelechi Iheanacho on a two-year loan deal from Leicester City, reports Completesports.com.

Fenerbahce, according to m.fotospor.com want the 23-year-old to replace Vedat Muriqi and are set to offer the Foxes €12m to secure his services.

Iheanacho struggled for regular playing time at Leicester City last season, with the arrival of Ayoze Perez from Newcastle United further pushing him back in the pecking order.

The Nigerian international scored five goals in 20 league appearances for Brendan Rodgers’s side last season.

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil says he will stay with the club "through to the last day" of his contract in June 2021.[/b]

The former Germany international, 31, has not played since the Premier League resumed in June, with manager Mikel Arteta citing "pure football reasons".

But Ozil dismissed reports the club were looking to pay up the last year of his £350,000-a-week deal.

"Things have been difficult but I love Arsenal," he told the Athletic. "I'll decide when I go, not other people."

"I'll give everything I have for this club," Ozil added. "Situations like these will never break me, they only make me stronger. I showed in the past that I can come back into the team and I will show it again."

Ozil, who joined Arsenal in a £42.4m move from Real Madrid in 2013, fell out of favour under previous manager Unai Emery before returning to the side under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg.

After Arteta's appointment in December, Ozil started all 10 of Arsenal's Premier League games immediately before the coronavirus pandemic forced a three-month suspension of the Premier League in March, but has not featured in their past 13 matches in all competitions.

Despite Arteta and his first-team players accepting a 12.5% pay cut in April, Arsenal announced they plan to make 55 staff redundant because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ozil opted against a pay cut because the players were "rushed" and believes "possibly the decision affected my chances on the pitch".

While he respects Arteta's decision to leave him out, Ozil believes he should have been given a chance to show what he can do on the pitch, saying: "You don't play 10 games in a row if you're unfit, not good enough or don't behave well."

He added that he was "not the only player who rejected the cut in the end, but only my name came out".

Southampton have confirmed the £10.9million capture of defender Mohammed Salisu.

'Southampton is a club with a very rich history in developing young players, so it is a very good club to develop my skills and to learn a lot as a young player’ he said.

'I know that the team expects a lot from me and I'm going to try to give all I can to help the team.'

Centre back Salisu has joined from Spanish club Real Valladolid and has become the south coast club's second summer signing following the £12m capture of right back Kyle Walker-Peters on Monday.

The Ghanaian defender, 22 on Sunday, completed his move last week and has been seeing out his 14-day quarantine period since arriving in England from Spain, in line with coronavirus guidelines. He has joined on a four-year contract.

We have some good centre-backs here and this will be another strong option for us.'

He made 31 league appearances and was a key part of a rear guard that had the seventh best defensive record in Spain's top division despite Valladolid finishing 13th.

Salisu was linked with a string of clubs following an impressive first full season in La Liga, before Southampton activated his release clause.

[b]RB Leipzig Reach UCL Semifinal Just 11 Years After They Were Formed; Atletico Out[/b]

RB Leipzig overcame a typically cautious Atletico Madrid to reach their first Champions League semi-final just 11 years after their formation.

After a poor first half, Dani Olmo headed the German side ahead but Atleti substitute Joao Felix levelled the tie from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box.

Madrid, chasing a third final in the last six years, seemed content to take the one-legged tie in Lisbon to extra time and sat back for much of the game.

They were punished for their characteristically defensive approach as Tyler Adams' deflected strike two minutes from time sent Julian Nagelsmann's exciting side through to face Paris St-Germain.

No Werner, no problem
Leipzig came into the tie without the focal point of their attack after Timo Werner's £54m transfer to Chelsea earlier in the summer.

Werner scored 34 goals for the club this season while the starting XI in their first quarter-final at this level had mustered just 44 between them.

A lack of cutting edge was as evident as was expected, with Leipzig's enterprising approach play all-too-often leading to nothing.

The German side were the only team playing progressive football in a dull first period - and that sense of adventure included centre-back Dayot Upamecano frequently carrying the ball out from a back three and suggesting he is a defensive prospect out of the very top drawer.

Their deserved lead arrived early in the second half when Marcel Sabitzer's fine cross was met by Olmo's late surge from midfield and he flicked a header beyond the dive of Atleti's renowned keeper Jan Oblak.

If Leipzig's lack of threat was down to the absence of an individual, their opponents' issues were more systemic.

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa was marooned up front and was bullied by young Frenchman Upamecano at times.

Just as in PSG's fightback on Wednesday night, though, the introduction of a £100m+ substitute made the difference.

Portugal playmaker Felix was excellent as soon as he entered the match and won a penalty with a driving run into the area then confidently converted the penalty.

However any sense of a change in momentum was stymied by Atleti boss Diego Simeone, who appeared content to play for extra time as he instructed his side - unbeaten in 18 games - to sit in.

But a brilliant pass from Sabitzer freed Angelino into space and after he found Adams, the United States midfielder's powerful shot flew in off the heels of Stefan Savic past a stranded Oblak.

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly lining up a shock move for Manchester United's on-loan star Odion Ighalo.
 
The French giants have identified the 31-year-old Nigerian striker as a replacement for Edinson Cavani after the 33-year-old Uruguayan left the club folowing the end of his contract  last month.
 
Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhu recently extended his loan deal to stay at United until January, after scoring five times for the club.
 
According to French publication, Foot Mercato, PSG have made contact with Ighalo's representatives about a possible transfer to replace Edinson Cavani despite splashing out £52million to sign Mauro Icardi on a permanent basis earlier this summer.

Philipe Coutinho, Barcelona's player on loan at Bayern also scored two goals against his team, as captain Lionel Messi looked on, but couldn't help his teammates.
 
As usual one could have expected player of the year Lionel Messi to score goals and help out his team, but the Argentine looked hapless throughout as he couldn't even muster a goal.

Arsenal Investigate Pepe’s £72m Record Transfer Fee


Arsenal have launched an internal investigation into why so much money was paid for club record signing Nicolas Pepe.

The 25-year-old Ivorian became Arsenals’ most expensive signing when he joined for £72million from French Ligue 1 club Lille last summer.

In his debut season at Arsenal he scored eight goals and provided10 assists.

But according to ESPN while there is believed to be no regret in signing Pepe, Arsenal reckon they overpaid to bring him to the Emirates.

The north London club paid £20m up front, with a commitment to a further £52m over the next five years.

That first instalment is due to be paid this summer and the commitment to owe that extra chunk has led to ‘a review of scouting reports and negotiating process’ to determine why such a huge deal was made.

Pepe was wanted by Europe’s top clubs after scoring 23 goals in 41 appearances in the 2018/19 campaign with Lille.

And the report adds that individuals who were working for rival clubs to try to sign Pepe were stunned by the transfer fee Arsenal eventually paid.

Now, the transfer is being investigated by club officials as part of a recruitment overhaul which saw scouts Francis Cagigao, Brian McDermott and Brian Clark leave north London.

Unai Emery, Arsenal’s manager at the time when Pepe arrived, revealed he wanted to sign Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha instead.

However, Palace were believed to want a large fee paid upfront – and not in instalments – which resulted in Arsenal going for Pepe.

Emery said: “I told them, ‘This is the player I know and want’. I met Zaha and he wanted to come.

“The club decided Pepe was one for the future. I said, ‘Yes, but we need to win now and this lad wins games.’ He beat us on his own.

“It’s also true he was expensive and Palace didn’t want to sell. There were a series of decisions that had repercussions.”

Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique, has called for changes in the club, following their humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich on Friday night.
The LaLiga side have been eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-final stage for the second time in three years.


“This club needs changes, and I don’t mean the manager, or any specific players. I don’t want to single anyone out. It needs changes.


“This is the bottom,” Pique told reporters shortly after the game.

Thomas Muller opened the scoring in the 4th minute, but David Alaba’s own goal made it 1-1.
Bayern responded in ruthless fashion, scoring three times before the half-time whistle. Ivan Perisic, Serge Muller and Muller got the goals.

Luis Suarez pulled one back for the LaLiga side, but again, Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho (twice) restored the Bavarians’ commanding lead

Champions League: UEFA makes revelation about Messi, Ronaldo as Bayern humble Barcelona

The Union of European Football Association (UEFA) has said that the Champions League semi-finals will not feature either Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi or Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time since the 2004/2005 campaign.


UEFA said this immediately after Bayern Munich eliminated Barcelona from the Champions League last-8 final on Friday night.


In a tweet, UEFA wrote on its official Twitter handle: “The UCL semi-finals will not feature either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time since 2004/05.”

Recall that Barcelona were completely overpowered by a ruthless Bayern side, who scored four times in either halves as the match ended 8-2 in favour of the German club at the Estádio da Luz in Portugal.


Goals from Thomas Muller (2), Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski and Phillippe Coutinho (2) ensured the Bundesliga champions qualified for the semi-finals where they will take on the winner between Manchester City and Lyon.


Also, Lyon eliminated Juventus in the Champions League last-8 final last week on away goal rule after the match ended 2-2 aggregate, despite Ronaldo’s two goals in Turin.

Champions League: Barcelona fans attack players at team hotel after 8-2 defeat to Bayern

Barcelona players were verbally assaulted by angry supporters, as they returned to their hotel in Lisbon following their 8-2 whitewash against Bayern Munich.
The LaLiga giants suffered their heaviest ever Champions League defeat, as Bayern Munich ran riot to book their place in the semi-final.


Fans gathered outside the hotel to vent, with AS reporting some of them screamed “scoundrels”, as the players disembarked from the team bus.


The likes of Luis Suarez, Nelson Semedo, Antoine Griezmann and Ivan Rakitic were subjected to boos, while Lionel Messi appeared to hold his hands up in apology.

Barca are now expected to take decisive action in the coming days, including sacking manager Quique Setien.

It is also believed that Sporting Director, Eric Ebidal, will join Setien in going through the exit doors.
