Video emerges of the fatal shooting of unarmed black man, Ahmaud Arbery, by a White man in Georgia







The fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old unarmed Black man out for a jog when he was chased and killed, was caught on video, prompting a call for a grand jury to review the case as the shooter has not been arrested or charged.

 

The shooting occurred in February but the video was posted online Tuesday, May 5, by a local radio station host.

 

Arbery's death is being referred to as a modern-day lynching, as he was unarmed when he was gunned down in Brunswick, Georgia on February 23 by a white citizen named Travis McMichael. He also happens to be the son of a former district attorney investigator, Gregory McMichael, who was present during the shooting.

 
 

 

In the video released online, Arbery is seen jogging when he was stopped by McMichael and his father in a white pickup truck. McMichael was armed with a shotgun. Arbery appears to attempt to run around the truck before he and McMichael start struggling.

 

After at least 2 shots, the men continued struggling over the gun, until Arbery stumbles away, shot in the mid-section, and then collapses to the ground. He was later pronounced dead.

 

McMichael has not been charged in the shooting because he and his father, who was in the back of the truck during the shooting, claim they were trying to make a citizen's arrest. They claim Ahmaud fit the description of a suspect in a string of recent break-ins in the area.

 

After the emergence of the video, D.A. Pro Tempore Tom Durden has decided the case "should be presented to the grand jury of Glynn County for consideration of criminal charges against those involved in the death of Mr. Arbery."

 

After the shooting, Gregory McMichael told police he saw the same man "the other night" and that he stuck his hand down his pants on that occasion, leading McMichael to believe he was armed, according to a Glynn County Police report.

After seeing Arbery jogging, McMichael then alerted Travis, 34, according to the police report.

 

"Travis, the guy is running down the street, let's go," McMichael said, according to the report.

 

The two grabbed a shotgun and a pistol and followed Arbery in their truck, police said. Travis McMichael, the driver, followed Arbery and then attempted to cut him off, the report said. Arbery turned around and began running in the opposite direction, the police report said.

 

They chased Arbery to a nearby intersection, where they caught up to him, the report said.

 

"Stop, stop, we want to talk to you," Gregory McMichael shouted at Arbery, according to the police report.

 

Travis McMichael then exited truck with the shotgun, the police report said. His father told officers Arbery "violently attacked" his son, the report said, and they struggled over the gun. Travis McMichael fired two shots, the report said, and Arbery fell.

 

The emergence of the video led to calls for the case to go to grand jury. A district attorney has confirmed that the case will now go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia following the emergence of the video.

 

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. "Georgians deserve answers," Kemp tweeted.

 

Kemp also retweeted the GBI's post that Durden "formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery."

 

State Attorney General Chris Carr said he was "deeply concerned" by the video and news reports.

 

Meanwhile, Ahmaud's family says the use of deadly force was unnecessary.

 

Wanda Cooper, Arbery's mother, told CNN on Sunday that when police notified her of her son's death, she was told her son was involved in a burglary and that there was a confrontation between her son and the homeowner and a struggle over a gun.

 



 

"He was not armed," Cooper said. She said she never worried about him jogging because she said he wasn't bothering anyone.

 
There have been no charges against the father and son involved in the incident.
 
CNN had previously reached out to Gregory McMichael, who is also a former investigator for the district attorney in the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, for comment. McMichael said he won't be commenting because he is under investigation.
 
Meanwhile, Twitter users have taken to the platform to ask for Justice with the hashtag #JusticeFor AhmaudArbery.

On Tuesday, US presidential candidate Joe Biden called the shooting a 'cold-blooded murder' and says the family of Ahmaud Arbery need justice. 

'The video is clear: Ahmaud Arbery was killed in cold blood,' Biden tweeted late Tuesday along with a link to a Georgia district attorney recommendation that a grand jury hears the case.

'My heart goes out to his family, who deserve justice and deserve it now,' the presumed Democratic nominee continued in his Twitter post. 'It is time for a swift, full, and transparent investigation into his murder.'

Father and son involved in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery have finally been arrested and charged with murder after national outcry






The two white men seen in a viral video fatally shooting an unarmed black man dead while he was jogging around their neighbourhood have finally been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. 
 
The charges came more than two months after Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was killed in a residential street just outside the port city of Brunswick in Georgia. 
 
A graphic video of Arbery's final moments was shared online this week, prompting a national outcry from people who called for the suspects to be arrested and charged.
 

On Thursday, Georgia authorities arrested Gregory McMichael, 64, alongside his son Travis McMichael, 34, and charged them with murder in connection with the killing of Ahmaud Arbery. 
 
In the video, Arbery was seen jogging in Georgia when he was stopped by McMichael and his father in a white pickup truck. McMichael was armed with a shotgun. Arbery ran around the truck trying to avoid a confrontation before he and McMichael started struggling.

After at least two shots, the men continued struggling over the gun, until Arbery stumbled  away, and then collapsed to the ground. He was later pronounced dead.
 

Gregory McMichael, previously told police that he and his son chased after Arbery because they suspected him of being a burglar. But Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper Jones, said her son, a former football player, was just jogging in the Satilla Shores neighborhood before he was killed on a Sunday afternoon. 
 
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced the arrests after an investigation at the request of an outside prosecutor. 
 
The agency said in a news release that Gregory McMichael and his 34-year-old son, Travis McMichael, have been arrested on charges of murder and aggravated assault.
 
The GBI news release said the McMichaels “confronted Arbery with two firearms. During the encounter, Travis McMichael shot and killed Arbery.”
 
Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the slain man’s father, Marcus Arbery, said : “This is the first step to justice. This murderous father and son duo took the law into their own hands. It’s a travesty of justice that they enjoyed their freedom for 74 days after taking the life of a young black man who was simply jogging.”

Georgia Attorney General appoints a black woman as lead prosecutor in Ahmaud Arbery Case







The Georgia attorney general has appointed a black female prosecutor to oversee the case of Ahmaud Arbery, the 25-year-old African-American man who was shot dead by two white men back in February. 

The prosecutor, Joyette M. Holmes, who is from Cobb County in the Atlanta metropolitan area, where she is the first African-American to serve as district attorney, was appointed on Monday. 

She becomes the fourth prosecutor to take the case, superseding Tom Durden, who reportedly requested to be replaced by a prosecutor with a larger staff citing the cases' growth 'in size and magnitude.' 
 

 
Officials confirmed that she will be overseeing the prosecution of Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34, who were recently charged with murder and aggravated assault after a graphic video of them pursuing Arbery in a pick-up truck and then shooting him dead in a Brunswick, Georgia street surfaced online last week. 

'District Attorney Holmes is a respected attorney with experience, both as a lawyer and a judge,' state Attorney General Chris Carr, a Republican, said in a statement. 'And the Cobb County District Attorney's office has the resources, personnel and experience to lead this prosecution and ensure justice is done.' 

An attorney for Arbery´s father, Marcus Arbery, applauded the appointment of a new lead prosecutor in a statement.

'In order for justice to be carried out both effectively and appropriately in the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, it is imperative that the special prosecutor has no affiliation with the Southeast Georgia legal or law enforcement communities,' attorney Benjamin Crump said in a statement. He asked that Holmes 'be zealous in her search for justice.'
