We Will Comply With Supreme Court Judgement On Bayelsa — INEC
#1
Quote:The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it would give effect to today’s Supreme Court judgement sacking the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) candidate as the winner of the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Festus Okoye, told Daily Trust exclusively today in Abuja that the commission would back to its Operation Department to determine the party that meet up the Apex Court ruling.

“The Supreme Court has directed the commission to issue the Certificate of Return (CoR) to the political party that placed second in the Bayelsa governorship election and which also has the geographical spread in the election.
“So, what the commission would do is to go back to its Operation Department and make a determination on which political party came second in the election and which political party got the geographical spread in the election.

“Based on that, we would carry out the judgement of the Supreme Court. We would do that when we get the judgement of the Supreme Court, so that we would know clearly what the Supreme Court want us to do and we would carry it out,” Okoye told Daily Trust.

The Supreme Court earlier today sacked the Bayelsa State governor-elect, David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his running-mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo 24 hours to their inauguration on February 14.

A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili ordered INEC to withdraw the Certificate of Return (CoR) issued to the APC candidate as the winners of the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

Accordingly, the apex court in its unanimous judgement delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko, also ordered INEC to issue fresh certificates to the candidates of the party with the next highest votes and with the required constitutional spread of votes in the results of the election.
Lyon was sacked for presenting a running mate with fake qualification.

INEC Replies Oshiomhole: We Obeyed Supreme Court On Bayelsa Like We Did On Imo

Quote:The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday said it will not join issues with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the Supreme Court judgment on Bayelsa governorship election.

The apex court yesterday sacked the APC’s governor-elect in Bayelsa State, David Lyon, and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo and pronounced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, Douye Diri and his running mate, Lawrence Ewrujakpor as the winners of the election held in the state.

It gave the ruling after it had found irregularities in the credentials of the ex-APC deputy governor-elect in Bayelsa State, Degi-Eremienyo, and annulled the joint ticket of both Lyon and Degi-Eremienyo.

The apex court then ordered INEC to issue fresh certificates to the candidates of the party with the next highest votes.

However, in a press conference on Friday afternoon, Oshiomhole rejected the result and accused INEC of creating crisis in the system by issuing certificate of return to Diri.

Oshiomhole added that INEC wrongly interpreted the Supreme Court judgment, thereby creating illegality in the electoral process.
“INEC has assumed the position of the court by interpreting the judgment the way it has done, which it has no power to do so” he said.

However, speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman said the electoral body only complied with the ruling of the Supreme Court just as it did with the judgment on Imo governorship election.

“It is not the Independent National Electoral Commission’s practice to join issues with politicians on any matter, especially on issues under its jurisdiction”.

“The Supreme Court on 13th February 2020 delivered a judgment in a pre-election suit on the Bayelsa State Governorship Election held on 16th November 2019”.

“INEC received the Certified True Copy of the judgment on 14th February, convened a meeting this morning to study the judgment and at the end of that meeting, took a decision to comply with it”.

“Therefore, as far as we are concerned, we have done what the Supreme Court ordered us to do and we couldn’t have done otherwise” he said.

Bayelsa: Oshiomhole unstable, out to destroy Nigeria – Jonathan’s ex-aide, Omokri

 February 15, 2020

Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has described Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as an unstable human being.

Reacting to a photograph of Douye Diri being inaugurated last night, Omokri said Oshiomhole was determined to destroy both APC and Nigeria due to his selfish interest.
In a post on his Facebook page, the former presidential aide insisted that the violence witnessed in Bayelsa State on Friday were caused by the APC National Chairman.

He, however, urged the International Criminal Court, ICC, to take note since Nigerian government wouldn’t take action against Oshiomhole over his inflammatory comments.
Omokri wrote: “This photograph of Douye Diri being sworn in as the PDP Governor of Bayelsa proves that Adams Oshiomhole is an unstable individual, who talks before he thinks, and thinks more highly of himself, perhaps because of the inferiority complex of his Little Man Syndrome!‬
“The unrest in Bayelsa earlier today is directly linked to Oshiomhole’s irresponsible comments of yesterday. Not content with destroying the APC, Oshiomhole wants to destroy Nigeria.

“Since the Nigerian authorities will not do anything, I hope the International Criminal Court is taking note.”
‬The Supreme Court had on Thursday sacked David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the governor-elect of Bayelsa State.
It also declared Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the election and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to issue him Certificate of Return.

Following the ruling, Oshiomhole had vowed that nobody would be sworn-in as governor because Lyon had the highest number of votes.

Despite Oshiomhole’s threat, INEC had declared Diri winner of the election and subsequently issued him certificate of return.
Photographs, however, emerged late last night indicating that Diri was sworin-in as governor of the state.
