Trump administration adds Nigeria & 5 other countries to Travel ban list

The US State Department on Friday night announced that it has put six new countries under its travel ban list.

Under a proclamation signed Friday by President Trump, citizens from Eritrea, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan and Nigeria- Africa's most populous country, won’t be allowed to apply for visas to immigrate to the U.S.

Two other countries, Sudan and Tanzania, will be barred from participating in the diversity visa lottery, which randomly awards green cards to 50,000 immigrants from underrepresented countries annually.

The six countries will join a list of seven nations, most of them Muslim-majority, which include Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela and North Korea, that faced significant travel restrictions under President Trump’s original travel ban, issued in 2017.

However, unlike five of the original countries—Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen—travelers from the newly added nations who seek to visit the U.S. for business or pleasure will still be permitted entry.

The Trump administration which has made immigration reforms one of it's benchmark policies, stated that the policy was designed to tighten security for countries that don’t comply with the U.S. minimum security standards or cooperate to prevent illegal immigration.

However, Homeland Security and State Department officials said some immigrants would be able to obtain waivers from the restrictions.

The ban, which has been approved by President Trump will take effect on February 22.

The administration says the travel ban is vital to national security and ensures countries meet US security needs when it comes to sharing vital information that can prevent and fight terrorism.

"The restrictions are tailored to country-specific deficiencies, as well as travel-related risks to the homeland," a Department of Homeland Security official told reporters Friday.

US Visa ban: Nigerians who voted Buhari should be held responsible – Jonathan’s ex-aide, Omokri

 February 2, 2020

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, on Saturday, blamed President Muhammadu Buhari and those who voted him for the visa ban imposed on Nigeria by the United States, U.S.

DAILY POST had reported that the US President, Donald Trump had imposed a visa ban on Nigeria and five other countries.

The US president had signed the proclamation on Friday and it’s expected to take effect on February 22.

Reacting to the ban, Omokri stated that federal government’s release of some Boko Haram members played a major role in the sanction.

In a post on his Facebook page, the former presidential aide also stated that the launching of Operation Python Dance in the Southeast, Operation Crocodile Smile in the South-South and Southwest was responsible for the ban.

He wrote: “I wish the US did not place Nigeria on the Travel Ban list but put yourself in Trump’s shoes. Under this administration, Nigeria has released thousands of ‘repentant’ Boko Haram members, any of whom could apply for and get a US visa and wreak havoc.

“They watch as this government unleashed operation Python Dance on the Southeast, Operation Crocodile Smile on the SouthSouth and Southwest, while they treat herdsmen with kid gloves.

“Any of those herdsmen can apply for and obtain a US visa and export their marauding activities to America. Let us be logical, not sentimental. Don’t blame Trump. Blame General Buhari. In fact, blame yourself for electing him!”

US Visa ban: Nigerians should hold Buhari, his govt responsible – PDP

 February 1, 2020

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Saturday, charged Nigerians to hold the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Presidency and the All Progressives Congress, APC, responsible for the negative impacts of the travel sanctions imposed on the country by the United States, U.S.

PDP described the sanction as another huge misfortune brought by the Buhari Presidency and the APC, which have continued to wreck on Nigeria with its compromised handling of security issues, in addition to escalated bloodletting and human rights violation under their watch.

DAILY POST had reported that the US President, Donald Trump, had imposed a visa ban on Nigeria and five other countries.

Trump had signed the proclamation on Friday and its expected to take effect on February 22.
However, a statement by PDP’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan said the travel ban will have grave consequences on economic, educational, and healthcare opportunities; hurt family and social ties as well as further put pressure on Nigeria’s economy.

According to PDP: “More depressing is that the APC and the Buhari Presidency have been reversing diplomatic gains achieved by previous administrations while gradually pitching our nation against other countries of the world with its poor record on security, corruption and human right issues.

“Our party is worried that our nation that, has become a global destination and investment hub under the PDP, is now being pushed back to a pariah status under the incompetent and divisive APC, as reports from other members of the international community, including credible international organizations, have continued to raise concerns on security and human right issues under the Buhari administration.”

The party also recounted that just recently, Nigeria was rated the third country with the highest level of terrorism in the world.

“Only recently, our nation was rated as third country with the highest level of terrorism in 2019 after Iran and Afghanistan, in the Global Terrorism Index rating by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).

“This is in addition to damning reports by reputable organizations including Amnesty International (AI), Transparency International (TI), European Union (EU), United States Department of State among others, which in various independent reports, raised grave issues of escalated corruption, violation of human rights, disregard to rule of law, abuse of processes, election rigging and poor handling of security issues under the APC.”

The opposition party maintained that the APC-led federal government has failed to ensure security in the country and rejig the country’s Security Chiefs.
“The APC administration has failed to rejig its security high command despite the calls by Nigerians, in the face of worsening security challenges and mass killings in our country under their charge.

“It is also worrisome that the APC-led administration had failed to take a decisive step to apprehend and prosecute perpetrators of acts of terrorism including the mass killings in Benue, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Taraba, Kogi, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Ekiti, Kogi and
other parts of the country under the current administration,” the party said.

PDP also restated that such failures by the APC had continued to bolster insurgents, bandits and kidnappers to continue to launch deadly attacks on Nigerians.

“Moreover, the APC have failed to account for hoodlums and political mercenaries it imported from neighboring countries to assist in unleashing violence on Nigerians during the heavily rigged 2019 general
elections.

“The PDP, therefore, urge the National Assembly not to relent in its efforts to take decisive action on security, as the travel ban is a wake-up call on our leaders and all critical stakeholders to address the issues at stake.

“We, however, called on the United States to ensure that the ban does not hurt innocent Nigerians who are also bearing the brunt of the poor handling of security in our country under the APC administration,” the statement added.

US visa ban: Nigerians paying for past sins of PDP – BMO

 February 1, 2020

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has carpeted former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for not knowing the difference between a visa ban and a visa restriction.

BMO said that Nigerians are only restricted from immigration visa and that other visa categories are still available to Nigerians who qualify for them.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, the group said rather than gleefully celebrate the visa restrictions, Atiku should be remorseful that his party, the PDP, is responsible for this inconvenience caused Nigerians.

“The United States (US) visa restriction, engendered by the US Department of Homeland Security, is symbolic; to show security concern over two issues. One is the printing of the Nigerian passport, and the other is the storage of data and other vital information on the holders of the Passport.

“Now, these are crucial matters in a world where information sharing is of the utmost essence in the face of security challenges everywhere. The Nigerian passport was being printed by a company in Malaysia before the PDP gave it out to an Irish company.”
BMO said the PDP government then in power signed a double-faced contract, which was renewed just two weeks before handing over in 2015.

“In one breath, the contract was to last for four years, but in another breath, it was agreed that the said contract would not lapse until the company has printed 10 million copies of the travel document.

“As we speak, only 3million copies of the Nigerian passport has been printed by this company. This and the huge volume of vital information being held by this Irish company has created a huge security nightmare for concerned security agencies.”

According to the BMO, the International Criminal Police Organization commonly known as INTERPOL had actually reported that Nigeria was not sharing information.

“So, Nigerians can see what problems the PDP has brought upon the country.

“In an effort to redress the situation, President Buhari gave a directive to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to domicile the printing of the nation’s passport at the Security Printing and Minting Corporation.

“Unfortunately, this directive could not be executed because of legal issues raised by the Irish company contracted by the PDP government.

“No doubt the embarrassing inclusion of Nigeria in the travel restriction by the US is one of the prices we have to pay for the crimes of past PDP governments and their proclivity to shoddy handling of sensitive matters of state while they wallow in money laundering and other financial crimes,” the statement added.

US travel ban: Consequences of Buhari failing govt – Peter Obi

 February 1, 2020

The vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general election, Peter Obi, has said that the visa ban slammed on Nigeria by the United States was a consequence of a failing government.

The U.S. President, Donald Trump, had on Friday imposed a visa ban on Nigeria and five other countries
The proclamation, signed by President Donald Trump on Friday, is expected to take effect on February 22.

Reacting, Obi on his Twitter page on Friday stated that the ban could send wrong signals to prospective investors.
He said, “The U.S Visa ban on #Nigeria was avoidable. It is a consequence of the failings of the @MBuhari government.

“ It is capable of sending wrong signals to prospective investors. I hope that the administration will work towards righting the wrongs to get the ban lifted.”

Meanwhile, Buhari on Saturday set a committee, chaired by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, to study and address U.S. requirements relating to the travel ban on Nigeria.https://dailypost.ng/2020/02/01/us-travel-ban-buhari-takes-action-as-trump-blacklists-nigeria/
According to him, the committee would work with the U.S. Government, INTERPOL and other stakeholders to implement all necessary updates.
“Nigeria remains committed to maintaining productive relations with the United States and its international allies, especially on matters of global security,” he added.

US Visa ban: ‘You closed Nigerian borders, Trump was right’ – Shehu Sani

 February 1, 2020

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the visa ban on Nigerian and five other countries by the U.S. President, Donald Trump.

DAILY POST reported earlier that U.S. President, Donald Trump imposed a visa ban on Nigeria and five other countries, which is expected to take effect on February 22.

Sani who, was recently released from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody for alleged fraud, said the United States government has the right to impose a travel ban on Nigeria.

He supposedly inferred that the ban is ’right’ since the Nigerian government also closed its borders months ago.

The former Kaduna lawmaker on his Twitter page wrote: “You have the right to close your borders, they have the right to impose a travel ban.”

Recall that Sani was recently released from EFCC custody after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday, granted him bail over allegations of obtaining money by false pretence and misrepresentation.

DAILY POST recalls that the anti-graft agency accused the erstwhile lawmaker of trying to collect a bribe of $25,000 from the Chairman of ASD Motors.

Presidency Reacts To US Visa Ban On Nigerians

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

UNITED STATES SUSPENSION OF THE ISSUANCE OF IMMIGRANT VISAS TO NIGERIANS

On 31st January 2020, the United States (U.S) Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced temporary travel restrictions on six (6) countries including Nigeria.

For Nigeria, the restriction is the suspension of the issuance of “immigrant visas” to Nigerian passport holders only. This suspension shall come into effect on 21st February 2020. The suspension does not apply to other U.S visas such as those for official, business, tourism and student travel.

The DHS states the suspension of “immigrant visas” became necessary following a review and update of the methodology (performance metrics) adopted by the U.S Government to assess compliance of certain security criteria by foreign governments. This resulted in certain enhancements on how information is shared between Nigeria and the U.S.

Nigeria remains committed to maintaining productive relations with the United States and its international allies especially on matters of global security. Accordingly, President Muhammadu Buhari has established a committee, to be chaired by the Hon. Minister of Interior, to study and address the updated U.S. requirements. The committee will work with the U.S Government, INTERPOL and other stakeholders to ensure all updates are properly implemented.

US Congress to nullify visa ban on Nigeria and others

Speaker of US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi on Saturday February 1, slammed President Donald Trump over the addition of Nigeria and 5 other countries to US travel ban list.

Pelosi stated that Trump Administration’s expansion of the travel ban list is outrageous, threatens security, values and the rule of law in the North-American country.

In her statement, the House Speaker said they will be passing a “no ban act” against the immigrant visa ban to prohibit religious discrimination in America's immigration system, and also limit the President’s ability to impose such restrictions she described as "biased and bigoted".

Pelosi's statement read;

Quote: “The Trump Administration’s expansion of its outrageous, un-American travel ban threatens our security, our values and the rule of law.  The sweeping rule, barring more than 350 million individuals from predominantly African nations from traveling to the United States, is discrimination disguised as policy.
“America’s strength has always been as a beacon of hope and opportunity for people around the world, whose dreams and aspirations have enriched our nation and made America more American.  With this latest callous decision, the President has doubled down on his cruelty and further undermined our global leadership, our Constitution and our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants.
“In the Congress and in the Courts, House Democrats will continue to oppose the Administration’s dangerous anti-immigrant agenda.  In the coming weeks, the House Judiciary Committee will mark-up and bring to the Floor the NO BAN Act to prohibit religious discrimination in our immigration system and limit the President’s ability to impose such biased and bigoted restrictions.  We will never allow hatred or bigotry to define our nation or destroy our values.”

Friday’s proclamation will suspend immigrant visas for nationals of Nigeria, Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Sudan and Tanzania. The restriction only applies to those seeking to live in the U.S. permanently rather than temporary residence. It will also restrict diversity visas for nationals of Sudan and Tanzania.

Visa Ban: We Informed Nigeria Of Impending Action Since March 2019 - US

The United States of America government says it notified all foreign governments of a change in its performance metrics for identity-management and information sharing criteria on March 11, 2019.

In a proclamation published on the White House website, the US said Nigeria and the five other affected countries were among the worst-performing in the world.

However, it said there are prospects for near-term improvements for the six countries.

“The process began on March 11, 2019, when the United States government formally notified all foreign governments (except for Iran, Syria, and North Korea) about the refined performance metrics for the identity-management and information-sharing criteria,” the proclamation read.

“DHS identified the worst-performing countries for further interagency review and for an assessment of the potential impact of visa restrictions.

“In addition, the United States government, led by the department of state, continued or increased engagements with many countries about those countries’ deficiencies.

“A number of foreign governments sent senior officials to Washington, D.C., to discuss those issues, explore potential solutions, and convey views about obstacles to improving performance.

“As a result of this engagement, one country made sufficient improvements in its information-sharing and identity-management practices and was removed from consideration for travel restrictions.”

In the proclamation, Donald Trump, the US president, said the acting secretary of homeland security submitted a report on September 13 recommending the actions to be taken on the countries identified including “incentivizing those foreign governments to improve their practices”.

The proclamation imposes a ban on the issuance of immigrant visas to Nigerian passport holders.

Chad was removed from the travel restriction list for making sufficient improvement in its information-sharing and identity-management practices.

President Muhammadu Buhari has set up a committee to study and address the issues that made the US place visa restrictions on Nigerian passport holders.
