Idris Elba tests positive for coronavirus







British actor, Idris Elba has announced that he tested positive for coronavirus despite not showing any symptom. 
 
In an announcement made in a video shared on Twitter on Monday March 16, the actor said he underwent medical tests after realizing he was exposed to someone who had also tested positive. Idris revealed that he self-quarantined after finding out about the undisclosed person's test result. 
 
He wrote; 
 

"This morning I tested positive for COVID-19. I feel OK, I have no symptoms so far but have been isolated since I found out about my possible exposure to the virus. Stay home people and be pragmatic. I will keep you updated on how I’m doing. No panic.
"It sucks. Looks, this is serious. Now's the time to really think about social distancing, washing your hands."

 
Idris Elba now joins a list of actors who have tested positive for coronavirus and they include Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko.

France goes into total coronavirus lockdown with 100,000 police to enforce restrictions on movement







French president, Emmanuel Macron has put France on total lockdown with the country's borders closed in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.
 
The President addressed the nation on Monday night after the number of coronavirus cases "doubled every three days" to more than 5,000 people.
 
He said the country was effectively “at war” as he announced a 15-day lockdown beginning on midday on Tuesday with 100,000 police to enforce restrictions on movement.
 
"Movements will be very strongly reduced" for 15 days.  “Never before in history has France had to take such exceptional measures in a time of peace,” Macron said. ”You will no longer be able to see your loved ones ... or continue your daily routine.”

While the lockdown will affect about 67 million people, the President added that people will only be permitted to leave their homes only for essential duties and any violation of the edict would be punished.

His Interior Minister Christophe Castaner later confirmed that anyone walking outside “for any reason” will have to download a form stating the reason for their trip.

According to him, if they do not comply with this they could be fined up to £188.

France has suffered 5,500 cases of coronavirus and 127 deaths, making it the seventh-worst affected country.

Game of Thrones actor, Kristofer Hivju tests positive for coronavirus







"Game of Thrones" actor Kristofer Hivju announced on Monday March 16, that he will be going into self-quarantine after testing positive for coronavirus. 
 
The Norwegian actor who played Tormund Giantsbane on the HBO series, disclosed this in an Instagram photo with his wife. Though it is unclear if his wife have the virus, Hivju however disclosed that his symptoms were mild. 
 
He wrote;

"Greetings from Norway! Sorry to say that I, today, have tested positive for COVID19, Corona virus. My familiy and I are self-isolating at home for as long as it takes. We are in good health - I only have mild symptoms of a cold. 
"There are people at higher risk for who this virus might be a devastating diagnosis, so I urge all of you to be extremely careful; wash your hands, keep 1,5 meters distance from others, go in quarantine; just do everything you can to stop the virus from spreading."

 

 
The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has passed 179,000 worldwide, and roughly 1,300 confirmed cases of the virus have been reported in Norway.
 
This is coming after British actor, Idris Elba also disclosed that he tested positive for coronavirus after coming in contact with someone who has the virus.

7 Catholic priests reportedly die of Coronavirus in Italy







The deaths of at least 7 Catholic priests have been reported in Italy as a result of the Coronavirus.
 
Monsignor Vincenzo Rini (pictured above), a priest of the Diocese of Cremona, close to Milan, died on Saturday, March 14, after being infected with Coronavirus.
 
Msgr. Rini ran Cremona’s diocesan newspaper for 30 years, and was at one time the president of the Italian bishops’ news agency. He was also a novelist, and a noted literary expert, who served as the Church’s liaison to the Cristina di Savoia Cultural Congresses, which aim to promote Christian culture in Italy.
 
In addition to Rini, 6 priests in the Diocese of Bergamo have been reported dead of the coronavirus by Italian news site Bergamo News.
 
According to Bergamonews, Bishop Francesco Bechi told Italian journalists that in addition to six priests in his diocese who have died of the virus, 20 others have been hospitalized.
 
Bergamo, a city northest of Milan, has been identified as the region most afflicted by infections of coronavirus in the country.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak in the US, a Florida based pastor has said he and his congregation will not follow government orders to halt mass gatherings, saying 'The only time the church will close is when the Rapture is taking place'.


Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne, a South African-born evangelical Christian , runs the Tampa-based Revival Ministries International. During a sermon on Monday at River Tampa Church, Howard-Browne urged his followers to shake each other's hand despite the coronavirus outbreak that has killed four people so far in Florida.

‘We are not stopping anything'', Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne said on Monday.


‘I've got news for you, this church will never close. ‘The only time the church will close is when the Rapture is taking place.
‘This Bible school is open because we're raising up revivalists, not pansies.’

According to Newsweek, Pastor Howard-Browne, a South African-born US citizen who first came to the United States as a missionary in 1987, told his followers;

‘Well I know they don't want us to do this, but just turn around and greet two, three people,’ he said.
‘Tell them you love them, Jesus loves them.’
‘Listen, this has to be the safest place,’ he said during the sermon.
‘If you cannot be saved in church, you in serious trouble.’

South Korean church infects dozens of members with coronavirus after spraying saltwater in their mouths (photos)







A South Korean church has been struck down with coronavirus after 46 members including the pastor and his wife were infected with the virus. 
 
According to local reports, they were infected after an official failed to wipe a saltwater spray bottle they sprayed inside their mouths as they thought it would help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
 
Surveillance footage from the River of Grace Community Church in Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul, shows a church official sticking the spray bottle deep into the mouth of one follower after another, during a prayer gathering attended by '100 followers' on March 1 and March 8. 
 

 
“It’s been confirmed that they put the nozzle of the spray bottle inside the mouth of a follower who was later confirmed as a patient, before they did likewise for other followers as well, without disinfecting the sprayer,” said Lee Hee-young, co-chief of the Gyeonggi Province COVID-19 Emergency Response team,
 
“This made it inevitable for the virus to spread,” he said. “They did so out of the false belief that saltwater kills the virus.”
 
The church has since been closed and all its believers who attended the prayer sessions are being tested.
 
The church's pastor, identified as Kim, has apologized for the mass infection of his church members.
'I feel deeply sorry about what has happened. I will take all the blame and responsibility,' Kim told Yonhap News Agency, indicating his intention to retire after the ongoing crisis is over. 

This comes a month after more than half of 4,000 coronavirus cases in South Korea was linked to Shincheonji cult, a secretive church 

South Korea's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 74 new cases on Monday, bringing its total tally to 8,236.

At least 37 suspected COVID-19 patients flee Afghan hospital

At least 37 patients thought to be suffering from COVID-19, the illness brought on by the novel coronavirus, on Tuesday fled from a hospital in Afghanistan’s Western Herat province, a Health Ministry spokesperson said.

According to the ministry spokesman Wahidullah Mayar, the people in question are in isolation due to the virus.

They escaped from the hospital with the help of their relatives after beating up hospital staffers.

Mayar also criticized the police for not doing anything to control the situation.

Meanwhile a spokesman for Herat Governor Farhad Jellani, told dpa that a total of 38 people, the 37 mentioned earlier and one virus-infected person, escaped the hospital.

However, authorities managed to return seven of them back to the hospital. Efforts were ongoing to bring the rest back.

According to the Afghan Ministry of Health, all those involved in the hospital break-out had recently returned from Iran.

However, it was not clear why they left the medical facility, but videos on social media suggested they were at odds with the hospital over their treatment.

The authenticity of the videos could not be verified independently.

The Taliban spokesman, Suhail Shaheen, said the group was ready to fully cooperate with the Afghanistan Government and the international health organisations in preventing the spread of the virus corona pandemic.

South Africa now has 116 confirmed cases of coronavirus







South Africa recorded a spike in coronavirus cases in the country in the late hours of Tuesday, as 31 new cases have now been confirmed. 
 
In the early hours of Tuesday, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa stood at 85.
 

 
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has now confirmed there are 116 confirmed positive cases in the country, out of which there are 14 local transmissions. 
 
In a statement he issued, Mkhize disclosed they have collated background information on how these patients were infected.
 
He said; 
 

“Today we have a further increase of six local transmission cases. As part of tracking and tracing, we have collated background information on how these patients were infected. We will provide more information to the public to make them aware of how these local transmissions occur.
"We will however not disclose full details as this information is subject to patient confidentiality which we are bound by. 
"I must inform the public that there was a debate with clinicians, epidemiologists [and] virologists on when we, as government must release results to the public. These experts raised an issue of an ethical obligation to immediately alert patients as soon as the results become available.

"This therefore means that by the time a confirmation test is conducted in public laboratories, patients would have been notified of their initial results. This clarification is important because as government, we had announced to the public that all positive results will be verified through our public laboratories and the NICD. 
"In instances where our confirmation tests give contrary results, we will inform the public, make reference to that specific result previously announced and give the outcome of the confirmation results"

 
Among the new cases in the country is a 2-year-old boy from the Western Cape who has not travelled internationally. This is the youngest confirmed case.

Philly police to stop making arrests for prostitution, fraud, burglary and other charges to prevent the spread of Coronavirus








The Philadelphia Police Department has been instructed to postpone arrests for low-level criminal offenses to limit officers' exposure to COVID-19 and prevent the spread of disease. 
 
The department announced the decision in an internal memo obtained by Billy Penn and WHYY states.
 
According to the memo, Philadelphia authorities will stop arresting for certain nonviolent crimes, including all narcotic offenses, retail theft, vandalism, burglary, and prostitution.  
 
Beginning from Tuesday, arrests for these offenses will instead be “effectuated via arrest warrant,” according to Outlaw’s memo.
 
That means officers may detain and identify a suspect in order to gather evidence, but the alleged offender will then be released. Officers will then submit an arrest affidavit to the District Attorney's Charging Unit: "If the charges are approved the assigned detective will obtain an Arrest warrant," the memo reads. "The warrant will be served at a later time, as conditions dictate."
 

 
"We are supportive of Commissioner Outlaw’s directive on making arrests during the Coronavirus crisis," John McNesby, president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5, told Fox29. "The directive was released to keep officers safe during this public-health crisis. Meanwhile, violent offenders will be arrested and processed with the guidance of a police supervisor."

Don’t take Ibuprofen for coronavirus symptoms – WHO







The World Health Organization has warned against taking Ibuprofen for symptoms of coronavirus which includes runny nose, sore throat, cough and fever.
 
The warning came after French health officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus.
 
Commenting on a recent study in The Lancet medical journal, French Health Minister Olivier Veran said it was hypothesised that an enzyme boosted by anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen could facilitate and worsen COVID-19 infections.
 
Veran stressed that coronavirus cases should take paracetamol instead, while those already being treated with anti-inflammatory drugs should ask advice from their doctor. 
 
When asked about the study, WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva the UN health agency’s experts were “looking into this to give further guidance.”
 
He added; 
 

“In the meantime, we recommend using rather paracetamol, and do not use ibuprofen as a self-medication. That’s important. 
"If ibuprofen had been prescribed by the healthcare professionals, then, of course, that’s up to them.”

 
AFP reported that a spokesperson for British pharmaceutical company Reckitt Benckiser, which makes Nurofen, said in an email statement that the company was aware of concerns raised about “the use of steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) products, including ibuprofen, for the alleviation of COVID-19 symptoms.”
 
The statement added; 
 

“Consumer safety is our number one priority. Ibuprofen is a well-established medicine that has been used safely as a self-care fever and pain reducer, including in viral illnesses, for more than 30 years.
“We do not currently believe there is any proven scientific evidence linking over-the-counter use of ibuprofen to the aggravation of COVID-19. 
"Reckitt Benckiser is engaging with the WHO, EMA (the European Medicines Agency) and other local health authorities on the issue and would provide any additional information or guidance necessary for the safe use of our products following any such evaluation.”

People with Type A blood are MORE likely to catch and die from coronavirus than those with Type O, study claims[/b]

A person's blood type may make them more susceptible to catching the novel coronavirus spreading around the world, a new study claims.

The research states people with type A blood are significantly more likely to catch the virus than an individual with type O blood.

It also appears people with type A blood are more likely to die from COVID-19.

The controversial research has yet to be scrutinised by other academics and the Chinese researchers are unable to explain why infection varies by blood type.

Researchers in China assessed 2,173 people who had been diagnosed with the coronavirus, including 206 people who died after contracting the virus, from three hospitals in Hubei.

Of the 206 patients in the study who died, 85 had type A blood, equivalent to 41 per cent of all deaths.








In the healthy Wuhan population, a city of 11 million people, 34 per cent of people are type A.

In the study cohort, 52 of the people who died who were type O, making up a quarter of all deaths. Under normal conditions just 32 per cent of people are type O.

The coronavirus pandemic has infected almost 200,000 people and killed more than 7,800 worldwide. More than 3,000 deaths were in China, the disease's ground-zero.

Academics compared the data of the infected Wuhan patients with 3,694 non-infected people in the same region.

Normally, in Wuhan's general public, 32 per cent of people are type A but this figure rose to 38 per cent among the infected.

In contrast, type O people make up 34 per cent of the general public but this figure plummeted to 26 per cent of infected patients.

The researchers write: 'Blood group O was associated with a lower risk of death compared with non-O groups.

'To the contrary, blood group A was associated with a higher risk of death compared with non-A groups.'

The researchers believe this correlation may reveal type O people are less susceptible to the SARS-COV-2 viru.

'People of blood group A might need particularly strengthened personal protection to reduce the chance of infection,' wrote the researchers in their paper, which has not yet been peer-reviewed but has been published online on medrxiv.

'Sars-CoV-2-infected patients with blood group A might need to receive more vigilant surveillance and aggressive treatment. '

The researchers add: 'It might be helpful to introduce ABO blood typing in both patients and medical personnel as a routine part of the management of Sars-CoV-2 and other coronavirus infections, to help define the management options and assess risk exposure levels of people'.

Brief note on what coronavirus is

A coronavirus is a type of virus which can cause illness in animals and people. Viruses break into cells inside their host and use them to reproduce itself and disrupt the body's normal functions. Coronaviruses are named after the Latin word 'corona', which means crown, because they are encased by a spiked shell which resembles a royal crown.

The coronavirus from Wuhan is one which has never been seen before this outbreak. It has been named SARS-CoV-2 by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. The name stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2.

Experts say the bug, which has killed around one in 50 patients since the outbreak began in December, is a 'sister' of the SARS illness which hit China in 2002, so has been named after it.

The disease that the virus causes has been named COVID-19, which stands for coronavirus disease 2019.

Dr Helena Maier, from the Pirbright Institute, said: 'Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that infect a wide range of different species including humans, cattle, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats and wild animals.

'Until this new coronavirus was identified, there were only six different coronaviruses known to infect humans. Four of these cause a mild common cold-type illness, but since 2002 there has been the emergence of two new coronaviruses that can infect humans and result in more severe disease (Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronaviruses).

'Coronaviruses are known to be able to occasionally jump from one species to another and that is what happened in the case of SARS, MERS and the new coronavirus. The animal origin of the new coronavirus is not yet known.'

Once someone has caught the COVID-19 virus it may take between two and 14 days, or even longer, for them to show any symptoms – but they may still be contagious during this time.

If and when they do become ill, typical signs include a runny nose, a cough, sore throat and a fever (high temperature). The vast majority of patients will recover from these without any issues, and many will need no medical help at all.

In a small group of patients, who seem mainly to be the elderly or those with long-term illnesses, it can lead to pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection in which the insides of the lungs swell up and fill with fluid. It makes it increasingly difficult to breathe and, if left untreated, can be fatal and suffocate people.

Figures are showing that young children do not seem to be particularly badly affected by the virus, which they say is peculiar considering their susceptibility to flu, but it is not clear why.

The illness can spread between people just through coughs and sneezes, making it an extremely contagious infection. And it may also spread even before someone has symptoms.

It is believed to travel in the saliva and even through water in the eyes, therefore close contact, kissing, and sharing cutlery or utensils are all risky. It can also live on surfaces, such as plastic and steel, for up to 72 hours, meaning people can catch it by touching contaminated surfaces.

Top lawmaker reportedly dies from coronavirus in Burkina Faso








Burkina Faso has recorded its first death from coronavirus after a top lawmaker died from the disease.
 
62-year-old Ms. Rose Marie Compaore, who was the first vice president of the parliament reportedly died on Tuesday night from coronavirus. She was also suffering from diabetes.
 
Reacting to her demise, Martial Ouedraogo, Burkina Faso’s COVID-19 response coordinator said: 'This is a very contagious illness that is potentially fatal and that for now has no treatment aside from prevention.
 
“This tragic event calls us all to recognise the scale and seriousness of the problem which confronts us all,” said Martial Ouedraogo, Burkina Faso’s COVID-19 response coordinator.
 
“This is a very contagious illness that is potentially fatal and that for now has no treatment aside from prevention,” he stressed.
 
According to local reports, Burkina Faso has 27 coronavirus cases officially in its two cities, Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso. 231 contacts are being monitored

 Coronavirus: Africa Recorded 17 Deaths In 24 Hours – WHO

In the past 24 hours, Africa has recorded 17 deaths from the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, the World Health Organisation (WHO), Africa region has said.

While Africa was among the last continent to report cases of the virus, cases are beginning to spread throughout the continent as 33 countries have reported at least a case of the disease.

The UN health agency said so far, there has been 633 confirmed COVID-19 cases in 33 African countries leading to 17 deaths.

Meanwhile in the past 24 hours, the Gambia, Mauritius and Zambia have announced first cases.

Increasing cases

Cases in Africa have remained low compared to other continents.

Egypt still tops the chart of countries with the most cases in Africa with 210 cases. This is followed by South Africa with 116 and Algeria with 75 confirmed cases.

In Nigeria, the number of confirmed cases has increased to eight.

However, more cases might be expected from the country as contact tracing has been intensified to get the people who have been in contact with the confirmed cases.

As African countries are bracing up to tackle the rising cases, WHO said it is supporting countries with surveillance, diagnostics and treatment.

World

In the meantime, cases across the world have continued to soar as Europe is now the epicenter for the outbreak.

Cases have slowed down in China where the virus originated from as the country records lower index cases.

However, China still tops the chart of countries with the most infected cases and deaths globally with over 80,500 infected people and over 3,000 deaths.

This is followed closely with Italy which has so far reported over 35,000 cases and 2, 978 deaths.

As at Thursday, 6:51 GMT, a total of 219,385 confirmed cases have been reported in 176 countries with 85,749 deaths globally.

Testing and isolation

Despite the grim, people have been recovering from the virus. Over 85,000 people have been treated, recovered and discharged from the hospital.

In all these, WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, has insisted that the pandemic can still be controlled if governments show more dedication.

He said the first vaccine trial has begun just 60 days after the genetic sequence of the coronavirus was shared, but countries should not relent in isolation and treatment of confirmed cases.

He said “WHO continues to recommend that isolating, testing and treating every suspected Covid-19 case, and tracing every contact, must be the backbone of the response in every country.

He said that is the best hope of preventing widespread community transmission.

Mr Ghebreyesus also recommended that wherever possible, confirmed mild Covid-19 cases should be isolated in health facilities, where trained professionals can provide good medical care, and prevent clinical progression and onward transmission.

“If that’s not possible, countries can use community facilities to isolate and care for mild Covid-19 cases and refer them for specialized care quickly if needed”, he said.

Iran pardons 10,000 prisoners in addition to releasing 85,000 inmates as coronavirus deaths spike









Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will pardon 10,000 more prisoners including political detainees in an apparent bid to combat the coronavirus epidemic.
 
The move comes a day after a health ministry official revealed that the countries' death toll has jumped by 149 to 1,284 in 24 hours while the total number of infected people increased to 18,407.
 
Deputy Health Minister Alireza Raisi said: 'With 149 new deaths in the past 24 hours, the death toll from the virus reaches 1,284. Unfortunately, we had 1,046 new cases of infection since yesterday.'
 
On Tuesday, judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said Iran had temporarily freed about 85,000 people from jail, including political prisoners, in response to the coronavirus epidemic.
 
Two days later, State TV quoted the judiciary spokesman as saying that another 10,000 prisoners would be granted amnesty under a decree by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to mark the Iranian new year on Friday.
 
"Those who will be pardoned will not return to jail ... almost half of those security-related prisoners will be pardoned as well," judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili told state TV on Wednesday.
 
"A large number of prisoners who have been temporarily freed do not need to return to jail after the leader's pardon," Esmaili said.
 
"The unprecedented point is that the pardon also includes the security-related prisoners with less than five-year jail sentences," Esmaili said.

The United States government has stopped all visa appointments in its embassy in Nigeria. A message sent out to visa applicants reads;

Italy surpasses China in number of coronavirus deaths








Italy has officially surpassed China for the largest number of coronavirus-related deaths after the death toll rose in the last 24 hours by 427 to 3,405.
 
A total of 2,978 deaths were confirmed on Wednesday after Italy recorded 475 deaths from COVID-19, and the increase of 427 deaths on thursday brings the death toll in Italy to a total of 3,405.
 
A total 3,245 people have died in China since the virus first emerged there late last year. But Italy has far fewer confirmed cases - 41,035 as of Thursday against 80,907 in China.
 
Nearly 220,000 people have now been confirmed with the coronavirus globally, of which at least 84,000 have recovered from COVID-19, while more than 8,800 have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University in the US.

US approves use of Chloroquine in treatment of coronavirus 







The United States' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Chloroquine in the treatment of coronavirus. 
 
President Donald Trump made the announcement on Thursday March 19, during a press briefing on coronavirus. 
 
He said; 
 

“A drug called ‘Chloroquine’ is a common malaria drug. It’s also a drug used for strong arthritis…. It’s been around for a long time, and it’s very powerful. We know that if things don’t go as planned it’s not going to kill anybody. When you go with a brand new drug you don’t know what’s going to happen.

“It’s shown very encouraging results. We’re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. That’s where the FDA has been so great. It’s been approved. They took it down from many months to immediately."

Dead Coronavirus Victims In Italy Carried By Military Trucks


Coffins of coronavirus victims were transported on a fleet of army trucks last night after a cemetery in northern Italy was overwhelmed by the death toll.

An army spokesman confirmed today that 15 trucks and 50 soldiers, some of which are pictured, had been deployed to move bodies from Bergamo to neighbouring provinces.

The column of army trucks brought the dead out of Bergamo on Wednesday night in what Italians have called 'one of the saddest photos in the history of our country'.

The cemetery in Bergamo can no longer cope with the mounting death toll in the city, where more than 4,300 people have been infected and at least 93 have died.

Mortuaries are full and crematorium staff have been handling 24 bodies a day, including the regular drumbeat of non-virus deaths, meaning the bodies of virus victims have had to be dispatched to neighbouring provinces.

As developed as Italy, USA and many other countries are, they are still finding it difficult to contain the virus how much more under-developed Nigeria , and yet, the Nigerian govt was quiet to the plea of many Nigerians that all our borders should be closed until the virus is contained.
