Italian man with Coronavirus went to Ogun state before he was brought to Lagos where he was diagnosed- deputy gov, Obafemi Hamzat reveals (video)






The Deputy governor of Lagos state, Obafemi Hamzat, was on TVC this morning where he revealed that the Italian man diagnosed with the first case of Coronavirus in Nigeria, went to Ewekoro in Ogun state before he fell ill and was brought to Lagos where he was diagnosed with the virus.
 

This young man came in from Italy, Milan. He came in on the 25th. He has a consultancy job with a company in Ogun state. He landed on the 26th, went to Ewkoro and then he fell ill and the doctors were smart enough to say this is somebody that is coming from Italy that has just suddenly fell ill. So they took him in. So we sent an ambulance there with a pep jacket. So they brought him in and then he was diagonised. 
The good thing is that he was brought in yesterday morning. Within four hours, he was diagnosed. Our diagonistic tool seemed to work better than we expected. Normally it takes about 8 hours but within four hours, we were able to determine. So he is our biosecurity lab in Yaba. It is a lab that we built that can accomodate 100 for now but it is only one bed that is occupied today. Hopefully it wouldn't spread. So we are ready. We are well equipped.
He is there and he is getting better. The challenge is not for people to have the virus. If you don't know, that is the challenge. In this case, it is known that he has it. He is going to be okay. He is steady. The doctors say he is going to be fine. 
What we are doing now is that he came in through one airline, so we are tring to track everybody on that flight. He went from Lagos to Ewekoro. Who has he met? What has happened? Those are the people that we are tracking, isolate them and then check.'' he said

North Korea official suspected of having coronavirus 'shot dead for trip to public baths'

A trade official has reportedly been killed by a firing squad after defying coronavirus quarantine orders in the authoritarian Asian country, while a National Security Agency official was sent to work on a farm for similar offences

A North Korean official has reportedly been executed after he broke the terms of his coronavirus quarantine.

The trade official had been placed in medical quarantine after returning to the authoritarian country from China.

After the government worker was caught going to a public bath however, he was arrested and immediately shot, North Korean sources told Donga.

A different official, who worked at the country's National Security Agency, was demoted to working on a farm because he hid a recent trip to China.

The North Korean government has claimed that there have been no cases of coronavirus within its borders but this has not been independently verified.

The suggestion has been met with scepticism by those outside the country, which shares a border with China where tens of thousands of cases have been confirmed.

“The North Korean authorities have told FAO that there are no cases of the new coronavirus, but we are suspicious of such claims,” Bir Mandal of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization told Korea Biomed.

 Coronavirus: Larfage Cement Factory Quarantined As Ogun Begins Contact Tracing 


Ogun state government has said that the whole facility of Larfarge Africa Plc, cement factory in Ewekoro, Ogun State has been quarantined following the confirmation of the first case of coronavirus in Nigeria. The government said the victim, an Italian who is a consultant to Larfarge Africa Plc, had visited the cement factory on Tuesday.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker who disclosed this on Friday while addressing journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital, said the victim had developed fever and was treated at the clinic located in Lafarge facility before he was rushed to Lagos on Wednesday when the case grew worse.

The Commissioner who was flanked by the Special Adviser Public Communication, Remmy Hazzan, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kunle Somorin and top officials from the Ministry of Health during the briefing, said a team of epidemiologists have commenced line listing to detect all contacts the victim made during his stay in the state.

The Commissioner hinted that the victim made three contacts before his arrival in Ogun on Tuesday. Coker, however, said it would be premature to put number to the contacts he made in Ogun “since the case was just confirmed on Friday.” Coker vowed that every single contact with the victim would be identified.

She said “In the last 12 hours, the first case of COVID – 19 (Coronavirus) has been identified in Nigeria and the individual visited Ogun State.

The said individual is from Italy, a consultant to the Lafarge, Ewekoro factory. He arrived Nigeria on Monday, 24 of February at about 9:00pm.

Before arriving in Ogun State, he had made contact with three people, spent the night in Lagos and arrived on Tuesday morning in Ogun State. He stayed at a guest house and at about 4-5pm on Wednesday, he developed body ache and fever. “The staff clinic of Lafarge were very sensitive to the case.

They responded speedily and contacted Lagos, they had a high index of suspicion and once they contacted Lagos, the protocol kicked in and the individual was transferred to Lagos in a closed ambulance according to protocol. “He was transferred to the infectious disease centre in Yaba, Lagos where tests were conducted and a definite confirmation came out earlier this morning hence, the press release nationally and from Lagos.

“However, my colleague, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos contacted me very early this morning to alert us about the situation. “My message to the people of Ogun State is, there is no cause for concern.

The epidemiologists in Ogun State being supported by both Federal and Lagos governments are line listing every contact that this individual has had which means we are going to phone them, get in touch with them, quarantine them and monitor their temperature for two weeks. “Also, I’m urging us that individually we have to be responsible for our health.

Every single one of us has to have good respiratory hygiene which means that if we have a cough or we have a cold, we have to cover our mouths with tussles or handkerchiefs and dispose them responsibly.

Don’t leave them on surfaces because the virus could still be in those things, use them and dispose them immediately, don’t put them back in your pockets,” she said.

Coronavirus: Killer disease hit Nigeria, 12 other countries in 48 hours

Nigeria is not the only country that has recorded the first case of coronavirus.


On Thursday, the deadly killer disease, which originated from Wuhan in China, hit 5 other countries.
They are Denmark, Netherlands, San Marino, Estonia and Northern Ireland.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) listed Brazil, Georgia, Greece, Macedonia, Pakistan, Romania and Norway as countries with new cases.
All announced efforts to forestall the spread of the virus which broke out mid-December 2019.
With the development, coronavirus is now in 50 countries and caused the death of over 3,000 people.

On Friday, the Nigerian government announced a COVID-19 case in Lagos, the commercial hub of Africa’s most populous nation.

The infected individual is an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, on the 25th of February.

The government has assured that the patient is clinically stable with no serious symptoms. He is currently being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.

Authorities say measures are in place to ensure an outbreak is controlled and contained quickly.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had announced preventive measures against coronavirus.

Dog tests positive for coronavirus in Hong Kong and it's believed to be the first case of a pet catching the virus






A dog has been diagnosed with having coronavirus after contracting it from its owner in Honk Kong.
 
Yvonne Chow Hau Yee took her dog to a vet in the Happy Valley area of the city and results showed that the dog tested positive to the virus though it had not shown any symptoms.
 
The dog is now being kept in quarantine for 14 days after rectal, oral and nasal samples came back confirming it had the disease. Officials at the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) ordered for the dog to be kept at Hong Kong’s only quarantine facility where its condition will be monitored and it will continue to be tested.
 
The AFCD said in a statement that it "does not have evidence that pet animals can be infected with Covid-19 virus or can be a source of infection to people".
 
Pet owners were being reminded to get into the habit of washing their hands after touching their pets.
 
The incident is believed to be the first case of a pet catching the virus.

Nigerian footballer, King Udoh, tests positive to Coronavirus in Italy







22-year-old Italian-Nigerian footballer, King Udoh, has tested positive to the coronavirus (Covid-19).
 
According to reports, Udoh who plays professional football with Pianese, an Italian Serie C side team, is currently in the infectious disease department of La Scotte hospital in Siena and is said to be in good condition. They quarantined him last weekend after he started feeling feverish.
 
Italy is the European country most affected by the Coronavirus epidemic.

Coronavirus: 28 Persons Quarantined In Ogun – Gov Abiodun 



The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, said a total of 28 persons have so far been quarantined in Ogun State.

DAILY POST learnt that those who were quarantined were those who had contacts with the Italian, who was the first person that tested positive to the coronavirus.

At a press conference on Friday, Gov Abiodun said the state government was leaving no stone unturned as items needed for health workers had been procured so that they can arrest the situation immediately.

According to him, the state is also tracing those who might have had contacts with the Italian, so as to isolate them, adding that “a contact-tracing exercise is ongoing.”

Abiodun spoke further that the company where the Italian visited had been shutdown, saying two isolation centres had been set up at the company.

Coronavirus in Nigeria: We’ve identified those who had contact with Italian patient - Lafarge






Cement manufacturer, Lafarge Africa Plc has announced that it has identified all those who had direct contact with the Italian man who is the first Coronavirus case in Nigeria. 
 
In a statement released by the group's spokesperson Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, it was gathered that those identified, had direct contact with the Italian man after he visited the company's plant in Ewekoro, Ogun state.
 
The statement read; 
 

“The Lagos State Government has reported a first case of n-COVID19 (Coronavirus) in Nigeria. The individual concerned works for a vendor that provides services to Lafarge Africa Plc in Ogun State,” the statement read.
“As a business, we have immediately identified the persons who had direct contact with the concerned individual. We have equally initiated isolation, quarantine and disinfection protocol.
“We thank the exemplary leadership of the federal ministry of health, Ogun and Lagos State Governments for swiftly providing response and testing facilities and we are working in full co-operation with all local authorities. Lafarge Africa is also working in close partnership with International SOS, our medical service provider, a leading global health company.
“Health and Safety remains a core value at Lafarge Africa and we intend to leverage this strength at this critical time.”

 
The Italian man who carried out business within the confines of the company on Tuesday and in the early part of Wednesday, arrived at Murtala Muhammed International Airport via a Turkish Airline flight on Monday February 24.

Coronavirus: Mongolian president placed under quarantine after returning from China







Mongolian President, Khaltmaagiin Battulga and other government officials have been placed under a 14-day quarantine after returning home from their visit to China, where the deadly coronavirus broke out from.
 
According to state news agency Montsame, Battulga along with several other government officials, including Foreign Minister Tsogtbaatar Damdin, visited China to meet President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday.
 
At the meeting, Battulga reportedly announced a donation of 30,000 sheep to China as they discussed joint efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. 

 
As soon as they arrived back in Mongolia, the president alongside other governtment officials were taken into quarantine as a precautionary measure, the pulication added.

We beat Ebola, we are capable of dealing with Coronavirus- NCDC boss, Chikwe Ihekweazu tells CNN, explains why Italian patient wasn't detected at Lagos airport







Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director General of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), has said that Nigeria is more than capable of dealing with coronavirus as this has been proven in the manner in which the country handled the Ebola virus epidemic in 2014.

 

Ihekweazu in an interview with CNN today, said

“Nigeria is ready. We successfully managed Ebola and we manage outbreaks all the time and are currently managing Lassa fever. We have a strong team that is used to doing this.”

 

Speaking on how the Italian who has been confirmed with Coronavirus, came into the country without being detected at the Lagos airport, Ihekweazu said temperrature scanners at the airport could not detect the disease because the man had no symptom when he arrived Nigeria.

“We are very hopeful for his full recovery. Screening is not a fool-proof method as the virus has an incubation period of four to five days,” he added.

 

Ihekweazu spoke on how prepared Nigeria is to tackle the viral disease that has claimed the lives of so many people in other countries.

“The system worked. We identified this case, diagnosed and isolated within 48 hours of it entering the country. In other countries like Iran and Italy for instance, by the time the first case had been confined, there was widespread contact.” 

 

He told CNN that efforts are now being made to identify all the passengers on the Turkish flight the Italian man boarded to Nigeria and all the people he may have come in contact with in Ogun state where he visited a cement factory as a consultant.

Coronavirus: We will ban public gatherings if cases escalate - Governor Sanwo-Olu






Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that he will be banning public gatherings if cases of coronavirus in the state escalates. 
 
Speaking at a press conference held at the State House in Marina on Friday February 28, the Governor said taking such measures now will create panic in the state. 
 
Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that the index case of coronavirus in Nigeria who has already been isolated at the state’s bio-security facility in Yaba, is not ‘highly contagious’ at the moment. 
 
He said; 
 

“It is only when there is a high level of escalation that the public can be panicky and this is when we realise that it is getting to person-to-person transmission.
“As we have said, this isolated case has been contained right from the hospital where he was first admitted and the guesthouse he slept after his arrival in Nigeria.
“It is when there is a person-to-person infection that we can trigger another level of isolation and curtail public events where a large number of people can gather. But I don’t think we have gotten to that level yet.”

Italian man with Coronavirus attempts to escape from Lagos isolation center over poor living conditions







The 44-year-old Italian man diagnosed with Coronavirus in Lagos, allegedly attempted to escape from the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos of Friday February 28th.
 
Punch reports that Health workers at the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, said the Italian man threatened to leave over the poor condition of facilities at the Isolation center. A senior staff of the hospital who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Italian man complained bitterly about the excessive heat and mosquitoes in the room where he is being isolated. 
 

“The patient wanted to run away yesterday (Friday). The Italian man, who seems to be an engineer, was very angry that the room where he was kept was very hot. There is nothing there (inside the isolation ward) aside from bed and hospital locker. He almost ran away and is still threatening to do that'' the Health worker who did not wear any personal protective equipment required of workers in such an environment said

 
The anonymous health worker stated that the level of preparedness in Lagos State for infectious diseases such as Coronavirus and Lassa fever “is zero.” According to the staff, Lagos State does not have the facility to accommodate individuals who might have come in contact with the Italian, adding that the facility that is meant to accommodate both suspected and confirmed Coronavirus cases is still undergoing renovation “and might take a while” before it can function fully.
 
The worker also revealed that the isolation area was a room in one of the wards, and that it was quickly vacated to accommodate the index case.
 

“The only thing demarcating the room from other rooms in the ward is a red and white barricade tape. That is where the Italian man that tested positive to Coronavirus is kept. There is no single equipment inside that place. It is just like any other regular hospital room with a bed. That building you see that is being repainted is the original place meant to quarantine Coronavirus patients. As you can see, the place is not ready. The state government is just renovating it, despite the fact that the virus started spreading since December 2019. It is really sad that a country like Nigeria is never ready to medically contain infectious disease outbreak. This is why most health workers leave because they are predisposed to danger of infection.” the staff said

 
Speaking further, the source said that the Mainland Hospital does not have a ready and designated facility to isolate and treat Lassa fever patients, much less Coronavirus. 

“The place meant for Lassa fever patient has been under construction in the past one month. It is not yet completed. As you can see, they are makeshift structures, hurriedly put together with white tarpaulin. They are not permanent structures and I don’t know how this place can actually accommodate humans that have a highly infectious disease like Lassa fever,” he said.

 
The health worker added that indeed the state government has traced those the Italian man came in contact with in the state, however they allegedly have not been quarantined because the state lacks the requisite facility.

“The standard medical operational procedure is to track all contacts and have them quarantined to avoid further spread of the virus. But we cannot do that here because we lack such facility, which is why there is emphasis on self quarantine.
“Even where the Italian man is presently being isolated was a room vacated by a patient. I pray God saves us in the coming months because we are not ready for the danger posed by the Coronavirus.” the staff said

 
A nurse at the facility, who appeared unconcerned by the situation on the ground, was seen walking out of the isolation area without wearing personal protective equipment. When asked why she was not wearing a face mask and gloves, she told a Punch Reporter;

“What is coronavirus? Gloves and face masks cannot do anything. We have been working here for years with people that have deadly diseases. At last, all of us will die,” she said

 
The Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday held a press conference where he said the state government was ready to curtail the spread of the virus. The deputy governor, Obafemi Hamzat, was also on TVC on Friday where he said the state has a 100 bed space for the isolation and treatment of anyone with the virus.

Coronavirus: Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos suspends sign of peace, direct priests to give communion on the palms






The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has temporarily suspended the exchange of sign of peace during Masses following the outbreak of Coronavirus in Nigeria.
 
The sign of peace is a traditional Christian greeting, which signifies a wish and blessing that peace be with the recipient when they exchange handshakes or hugs. 
 
In a special circular sent out on Saturday, Adewale Martins, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos also directed that communion will now be received in the palm.
 
In order to reduce the number of gatherings during this season of Lent, the Archbishop also in his circular, encouraged people to do their 'Stations of the Cross privately on Wednesdays while public celebrations should take place only Fridays especially as it is often followed by Mass.'

SPECIAL CIRCULAR ON THE OUTBREAK OF CORONAVIRUS
In December 2019, a cluster of pneumonia cases was reported in the City of Wuhan, China. Investigations found out that this was caused by previously unknown virus now named 2019 novel Coronavirus (ncoV). The outbreak has now become a global concern as it keeps spreading at an alarming rate. Therefore, while the government is doing all that need be done to ensure that this virus does not spread in our country, as we have been assured, it is important that information about the virus and factors relating to it are brought to the attention of everyone. We have been told that a case has been confirmed here in Lagos, we have to take proactive steps to protect ourselves from infection.
 
How is Coronavirus Transmitted?

A. person can carry and transmit COVID- 19 without showing the symptoms. Coronaviruses are circulated in a range of animals and can be transmitted to humans, though the exact dynamics are yet to be determined. In general, respiratory diseases are usually transmitted through droplets created when an infected person coughs or sneezes or through something that has been contaminated with the virus.

Live animal market workers
People caring for those with infection
Family members or health care workers.
Common Signs of Coronavirus
Respiratory infection symptoms

Shortness of breath
Breathing difficulties

Treatment
There is no specific medication; treatment is supportive care and treatment of symptoms.
No vaccine, treatment and vaccines are in development.
B. Standard Recommendations to Prevent Spread of Infection
 
1. Regular washing of hands with soap and water
2. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
3. Cook your meat and eggs thoroughly before consuming.
4. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as:
Coughing
Sneezing
5. Avoid undue contact with animals.
6. Appropriate use of mask in health care centers
7. Wash your hands thoroughly after having contact with live animals and animal products
8. Stay at home when you feel unwell
9. Cook meat and other such products very well.
10. Visit your health care centre early if you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing

Wash your hands frequently

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.
Maintain Social Distancing

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When people cough or sneeze they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouths which may contain the virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.
Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.
Practice Respiratory Hygiene

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread the virus. By following good respiratory hygiene, you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.
 
If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent the spread of viruses and other infections.

Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow the advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
 
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves.

In the light of this present circumstance, we hereby instruct as follows, till further notice:

a. The shaking of hands during the time for the Sign of Peace during Mass is suspended for the time being.
b. During this season of Lent, in order to reduce the number of gatherings in Church to the barest necessary, we encourage people to do Stations of the Cross privately on Wednesdays while public celebrations will take place only Fridays especially as it is often followed by Mass.
c. Communion, for the time being, shall be received on the palms
d. People are encouraged to have Hand Sanitizers handy to be used as and when needed.
e. The use of Holy Water fonts in churches and public places should be suspended till further notice

Mohammad Ali Dastak: Coronavirus Kills Member Of Iranian Parliament


Mohammad Ali Dastak, a newly elected member of Iranian parliament, has died of coronavirus.

Dastak, who was recently elected as the representative for Astana Ashrafieh, died on Saturday morning. He tested positive to the virus a few days ago.

Kianush Jahanpur, Iran health ministry spokesman, said the virus has killed at least 43 persons in the Islamic Republic, amid 593 confirmed cases.

“Unfortunately nine people died of the virus in the last 24 hours. The death toll is 43 now,” Jahanpur said.

“The new confirmed infected cases since yesterday is 205 that makes the total number of confirmed infected people 593.”

But there are reports that not less than 210 people infected with the disease have died in Iran.

The confirmed cases in Iran has made it the country with the fourth-highest number of cases in the world and highest number of coronavirus deaths outside China.

Masoumeh Ebtekar, Iran vice-president for women and affairs, had recently contracted coronavirus.

Ebtekar contracted the disease two days after Iraj Harirchi, the country’s deputy health minister, tested positive to it.

To curtail the spread of the virus, Iran has cancelled Friday prayers while officials urged residents to avoid travel within the country.

It also banned Chinese citizens from entering the country.

Nigeria recorded its first case of the disease on Friday, following the arrival of an Italian businessman from Milan, which has the highest rate of the infection in Europe.

Three Chinese nationals quarantined for Coronavirus in Plateau state






Three Chinese Nationals who are workers in a mining site in Wase town of Plateau State, have been quarantined for suspected case of the novel coronavirus.
 
Commissioner for Information in Plateau, Dan Manjang revealed that the Chinese citizens who flew into Abuja on Wednesday February 26, travelled down to Jos, the Plateau State capital on Thursday February 27. 
 
Manjang who averred that there is no confirmed case of coronavirus in Plateau, said the Chinese nationals are still being clinically examined by a medical expert deployed by the State Ministry of Health.
 
He told Channels Television; 
 

“The situation right now is that they have been isolated.
“The three of them came in through Abuja and once we heard that, the Commissioner for Health had to take a proactive measure to send a medical team to Wase to go and investigate.
“The problem that we have is that there is a tendency for people to think that investigation or quarantine, as the case may be, means that there is an outbreak of the virus.
“As far as Plateau case is concerned, there has been no known case of this virus on the Plateau; we just took proactive measures to make sure that we place them (the Chinese nationals) under investigation and that will take 14 days.”

 
Manjang further disclosed that the Plateau state government is currently waiting for the report of the team that was sent to Wase before taking the next step.

Stop shaking hands unnecessarily' - President Yoweri Museveni tells Ugandans as he addresses coronavirus outbreak








President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has asked his citizens to stop shaking hands unnecessarily as part of the precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. 
 
The 75-year-old made the statement while addressing the people of Uganda about the deadly coronavirus outbreak on Saturday. 
 
In a series of tweets, President Museveni urged his people to take extra caution to help prevent the spread of coronavirus as he noted that 'coronavirus doesn't kill as much and fast like Ebola, but spreads at a very terrific rate.'
