Coronavirus: Nurses step over dead bodies piled up on hospital floor
Nigeria has developed COVID-19 testing kit and it'll be commercially available - FG

The Federal Government has announced the indigenous development and validation of RNA-Swift in Nigeria.

RNA-Swift is a test kit used for the identification of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent for COVID-19.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology,  the development of the test kit was aimed at speeding up effective testing of Nigerians during the pandemic.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, talking to reporters in Abuja said;

“The RNA-Swift has amazing precision for the detection of SARS-COV-2 and will be commercially available at a price that places it ahead of competitors in terms of sensitivity and affordability.”

“I want to confirm to you that the RNA-Swift product team is in consultation with the African Development Bank for the funding of an African-wide testing programme for COVID-19 and the establishment for RNA-Swift production in Nigeria,” he stated.

Russia Tested COVID-19 Vaccine On Humans Successfully

Russia's Sechenov University Successfully Completes Trials of World's 1st COVID-19 Vaccine

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The clinical trials of the world's first coronavirus vaccine on volunteers at the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University have been successfully completed, Vadim Tarasov, the director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Biotechnology, told Sputnik.

The university began clinical trials of a vaccine produced by Russia's Gamalei Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology on 18 June.

"Sechenov University has successfully completed tests on volunteers of the world's first vaccine against coronavirus", Tarasov said.

He added that the first group of volunteers would be discharged on Wednesday and the second on 20 July.

According to Alexander Lukashev, the director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical, and Vector-Borne Diseases at Sechenov University, the objective of this stage of the study was to show the vaccine's safety on humans, which was successfully done.

"The safety of the vaccine has been confirmed. It corresponds to the safety of those vaccines that are currently on the market", Lukashev told Sputnik.

A further vaccine development plan is already being determined by the developer, including the complexity of the epidemiological situation with the virus and the possibility of scaling up production, Lukashev added.

"Sechenov University in a pandemic situation acted not only as an educational institution but also as a scientific and technological research centre that is able to participate in the creation of such important and complex products as drugs ... We worked with this vaccine, starting with preclinical studies and protocol development, and clinical trials are currently underway", Tarasov noted.

Chilean Police train dogs to sniff out Coronavirus

The Chilean Police are now training dogs to detect people that may be infected with Coronavirus by sniffing their sweat.

Three golden retrievers and a labrador who are between the ages of four and five, are part of the program said to be a joint effort of the Chile’s national police, the Carabineros and specialists at the Universidad Catolica de Chile. Before now, the dogs have been used to sniff out illicit drugs, explosives and lost people.

Julio Santelices, head of the police school of specialties said the program follows in the footsteps of similar efforts taking place in France.

He said;

Quote:"The importance of this scientific study is that it will allow dogs to become biodetectors, and detect this type of illness at an early stage."

Fernando Mardones, a Universidad Catolica professor of veterinary epidemiology said;

Quote:"The virus has no smell, but rather the infection generates metabolic changes which in turn leads to the release of a particular type of sweat which is what the dog would detect."

Mardones added that there is already evidence that dogs can detect diseases such as tuberculosis, parasite infections and even early stages of cancer.

The canine trainees began their education one month ago, and will use sweat samples taken from COVID-19 patients being treated at the Universidad Catolica's clinic. The experts hope to have the dogs trained and working in the field by August.

Dogs have 330 million olfactory receptors, and an ability to detect smells 50 times better than humans. They can also smell 250 people per hour.

Quote:Wear Face-mask If You Are Over 60 Years, When Going Out - WHO (6 June 2020)

Over-60s should wear medical-grade face masks when they’re out and cannot socially distance, WHO says in new guidance

PEOPLE aged over 60 are now being advised to wear medical-grade face masks by the World Health Organisation.

The WHO is now supporting medical-grade masks for the over-60s and people with underlying health conditions and says they need to be high-quality.

WHO says people over the age of 60 should be wearing medical-grade masks to stop the transmission of the virus.

WHO guidance recommends more complex masks made of three layers of fabric for the general public taking public transport or anywhere they cannot keep their distance, such as shops.

It also says people over 60 or with underlying health conditions should wear medical masks in “settings where physical distancing cannot be achieved” because of “increased risk of infection and/or negative outcomes”, the Guardian reports.

Anyone younger than 60 and in good health should wear a three-layer fabric mask, officials say.

The layers recommended are absorbent cotton closest to the face, followed by a polypropylene layer and then a synthetic layer that is fluid-resistant.

Scientists hopeful of Covid-19 vaccine breakthrough after volunteers show signs of immunity from virus

Scientists on Wednesday announced they are now hopeful of a successful Covid-19 vaccine after volunteers showed signs of immunity in separate trials.

The trials conducted in the UK and the US have shown positive results with scientists now hopeful that the vaccine could end the virus that has killed hundreds of thousands worldwide.

The UK team of scientists from Oxford University, focused on T-cells which develop as a result of a long-lasting immune response, and confirmed on Wednesday that they are "80 per cent" confident they will have a great working vaccine by September.

Oxford University who conducted the research partnered with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and will mass produce the drug when it's hundred percent ready.

According to the scientists who revealed their findings in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), the vaccine produced an immune response in 45 healthy volunteers during the early-stage study.

The scientists also revealed volunteers who got two doses of the vaccine had high levels of antibodies which exceeded those seen in patients who have recovered from Covid-19.

Both vaccines work by tricking the body into believing it has been infected with the virus to provoke an immune response that can then attack the virus.

Scientists say they started to focus on T-cells also known as "memory" cells, that are made in response to an infection and, unlike antibodies, remain long afterwards.

One of the UK scientists told ITV News on Wednesday: "An important point to keep in mind is that there are two dimensions to the immune response: antibodies and T-cells.

"Everybody is focused on antibodies but there is a growing body of evidence suggesting that the T-cells response is important in the defence against coronavirus."

US charges two Chinese spies for a global hacking campaign that targeted COVID-19 vaccine research

U.S. prosecutors have charged two wanted Chinese nationals linked to Beijing for their alleged involvement in a global hacking operation that targeted hundreds of companies and governments for more than a decade, stealing sensitive information.

The 11-count indictment unsealed on Tuesday, July 22, alleges Li Xiaoyu, 34, and Dong Jiazhi, 33, said to be working for China’s state intelligence bureau, stole terabytes of data from high-technology companies, around the world  including the United States, the prosecutors said.

The prosecutors accused the hackers of recently targeting the networks of over a dozen U.S. companies in Maryland, Massachusetts, and California developing vaccines and treatments for COVID-19.

The indictment comes just weeks after both the FBI and Homeland Security warned that China was actively trying to steal U.S. research data related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The hackers were first discovered after they targeted a U.S. Department of Energy network in Hanford, Washington, the Justice Department said.

The prosecutors said the hackers also targeted companies in Australia, South Korea, and several European nations, using known but unpatched vulnerabilities in widely used web server software to break into their victims’ networks. By gaining a foothold onto the network, the hackers installed password-stealing software to gain deeper access to their systems.

The prosecutors also said that the hackers would “frequently” return to the networks — in some cases years later.

According to the indictment, the hackers stole “hundreds of millions of dollars” worth of trade secrets and intellectual property. The prosecutors also allege that the hackers stole data related to military satellite programs, military wireless networks and high-powered microwave and laser systems from defense contractors.

The hackers are said to have targeted their victims on behalf of China’s intelligence services, but also hacked for personal financial gain.

In one case, prosecutors said the hackers “sought to extort cryptocurrency” from a victim company by threatening to publish the victim’s stolen source code online.

John C. Demers, U.S. assistant attorney general for national security, said that the indictments were “concrete examples” of how China used hackers to “rob, replicate and replace” non-Chinese companies in the global marketplace.

Demers also accused China of providing a safe-haven for the hackers.

“China has now taken its place, alongside Russia, Iran and North Korea, in that shameful club of nations that provide a safe haven for cyber criminals in exchange for those criminals being ‘on call’ to work for the benefit of the state, here to feed the Chinese Communist party’s insatiable hunger for American and other non-Chinese companies’ hard-earned intellectual property, including COVID-19 research,” said Demers.

Mandiant, the incident response division of security firm FireEye, said it has tracked the hackers since 2013 and the tactics, techniques, and procedures used by the hackers is “consistent” with its findings.

“The Chinese government has long relied on contractors to conduct cyber intrusions,” said Ben Read, senior manager of analysis at Mandiant, in an email. “Using these freelancers allows the government to access a wider array of talent, while also providing some deniability in conducting these operations.”

“The pattern described in the indictment where the contractors conducted some operations on behalf of their government sponsors, while others were for their own profit is consistent with what we have seen from other China-nexus groups such as APT41,” he said, referring to the Chinese advanced persistent threat group associated with the indictment.

If prosecuted, the wanted hackers could each face more than 40 years in prison. But prosecutors believe the hackers are in China, and extraditions to the U.S. are unlikely because of the strained relationship between China and the US.

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said the Madagascar herbal product has not shown that it has any curative powers for COVID-19.

He said the preliminary results of the analysis carried out on the Madagascar herbal remedy, showed that it is the same as the plant Artemisia anua, grown in Abuja by the Nigerian Institute for Pharmaceutical research and development, (NIPRID) for research purposes.

Ehanire, said the Madagascar herbal remedy was subjected to further tests to verify its efficacy.

The herbal tea, named COVID Organics and produced by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research (IMRA), was created from the Artemisia plant, and touted as a cure for the coronavirus disease, but health experts have warned about its risks.

Nigeria received five cartons of samples of the herbal tea in May before they were handed over to the Ministry of Health.

On Sunday, China also recorded four imported cases and 44 asymptomatic infections. However, the country does not include asymptomatic cases in its overall tally of confirmed infections.

As of Monday, July 27, China has reported a total of 83,981 confirmed cases, including 4,634 deaths, according to the NHC.

The deadly disease broke out in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019 and there are currently over 16 million cases worldwide.

Quote:Russia Receives Orders For ONE BILLION Doses Of World’s First Covid-19 Vaccine

A total of 20 nations from Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia have already requested doses of Russia’s breakthrough coronavirus vaccine, which was confirmed to be registered on Tuesday by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At a conference dedicated to the announcement of the vaccine’s registration, the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) explained that it had already received orders for a billion doses.

“Together with our foreign partners, we are ready to produce more than 500 million doses of the vaccine per year,” Kirill Dmitriev explained. Everything produced in Russia will be used domestically, and doses for use in other countries will be made abroad.

According to Dmitriev, the RDIF is also working on a humanitarian aid program for developing countries, with the aim of making the Covid-19 vaccine available in states that can’t afford to make or buy their own.

Explaining that vaccination is an acute problem in the world’s poorest countries, Dmitriev said that the fund believes “people around the world should have equal access to a vaccine, regardless of their financial situation.”

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country had registered the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine. Named “Sputnik V,” the vaccine is due to enter mass production soon, and will be available to the general public from January 2021. Despite being registered, the vaccine will still go through more clinical trials in Russia and the Middle East.

Madagascar herbal fails to halt Covid-19 spike in the country as hospitals struggle to cope with cases

Madagascar's herbal drug 'COVID Organics (COV),' which the country's leaders said cures and prevent coronavirus has reportedly failed to halt Covid-19 spike with hospitals are now struggling to cope with a surge of Coronavirus cases.

According to BBC, cases have quadrupled in the past month in the Indian Ocean island, with more than 13,000 infections and 162 deaths from Coronavirus.

Despite the spike, President Andry Rajoelina is still promoting the concoction as a cure for Covid-19 despite the World Health Organization (WHO) warning against using untested remedies.

For the last four months, children are also being offered the 'COVID Organics (COV)' at school to boost their health.

The authorities of the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen have urged consumers to be on the alert when buying imported frozen food after a sample of chicken wings from Brazil tested positive for COVID-19.

According to a statement on Thursday, the coronavirus was discovered after the local disease control centres took a surface sample from a batch of chicken wings while conducting routine screenings on imported frozen food.

“On August 11th, Shenzhen Longgang District conducted investigation and inspection of imported cold-chain food. On August 12th, the provincial and municipal CDCs reviewed and found a surface sample of frozen chicken wings imported from Brazil (registration number: SIF601; batch number: 7720051522) The new coronavirus nucleic acid test result was positive,” the statement read.

Shenzhen’s health authorities also traced and tested everyone who might have been exposed to the products.

“The results were all negative, and close contacts of positive samples were included in health management; all relevant stock products in the city were sealed and carried out Nucleic acid test results are all negative,” it added.

“All products sold are traced and notified to relevant agencies for disposal; the outer packaging and storage environment of relevant products are all eliminated.”

The development comes at about the same time when traces of the coronavirus were found on the packaging of shrimps imported from Ecuador, another South American country.

“It is hard to say at which stage the frozen chicken got infected,” Reuters quoted a China-based official at a Brazilian meat exporter to have said.

The Chinese authorities have been stepping up screenings at ports since June, after a coronavirus outbreak emerged from the largest wholesale food market in Beijing.

Quote:Wuhan Pool Party In China Sparks Outrage Amidst Covid-19 - Video

CNN) It was ground zero in the coronavirus pandemic and underwent the world's first -- and arguably strictest -- lockdown.

Now, the central Chinese city of Wuhan appears to have moved on from the virus, as thousands of revelers gathered in an open air water park for an electronic music festival -- without any masks or social distancing measures in sight.

Over the weekend, the Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park was filled with partygoers in swimsuits bunched together shoulder to shoulder, waving to the beat of the music while cooling down in hip-high water; others relaxed on inflatable rubber tubes that packed the pool to the brim, with little space to float around.

The crowded party scene remains unthinkable in many parts of the world still grappling with the deadly virus. More than 21 million people have been infected across the globe, with tens of thousands of new cases reported every day in the United States, Brazil and India.

But in Wuhan, life has gradually returned to normal since the metropolis of 11 million people in Hubei province lifted a stringent 76-day lockdown in early April. The city hasn't reported any new cases since mid-May.

The Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park reopened in late June, but more than a month of seasonal rain had discouraged crowds from turning out. The number of visitors in early August only accounted for half of the level in the same period last year, according to Hubei Daily, a provincial Communist Party mouthpiece newspaper, citing a manager at the park.

Currently, the water park receives an average of 15,000 daily visitors during weekends, and is offering half-price discounts to some visitors, Hubei Daily reported.

Coronavirus will be with us 'forever' and will require regular vaccinations, expert warns

An expert has warned that Coronavirus will be present "forever".

Sir Mark Walport, a member of the Government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), also said that people are likely to need regular vaccinations against the deadly virus.

Walport, who is a former chief scientific adviser, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme, that the pandemic would be controlled by "global vaccination" but it is not "going to be a disease like smallpox which could be eradicated by vaccination".

He added: "This is a virus that is going to be with us forever in some form or another and almost certainly will require repeated vaccinations.

"So a bit like flu, people will need re-vaccination at regular intervals."

Scientists around the world have been battling for months to try to get an effective coronavirus vaccine ready for mass use. The most promising results so far have come out of Oxford University, where a vaccine is in the final stages of testing before it receives approval for public distribution.

Walport said localised lockdowns are the best way to go at the moment to reduce a spike in the spread of Covid-19.

He said: "The whole point is to improve the local control, increase the amount of testing, give guidance to avoid that happening, but is there a situation where it could get out of control?

"Well obviously that's possible and that's why it's so important that we'll work together.

"People do understand that this is a risk.

"If it's allowed to get out of control, then there could be much more draconian measures."

Sweden uncovers 3,700 false positives from COVID-19 test kit

Sweden‘s Public Health Agency on Tuesday August 25, announced that it has uncovered 3,700 false Coronavirus positive results linked to a faulty test kit.

The PCR kits linked to the error which was discovered by two laboratories during routine quality controls, were made in China by the company BGI Genomics and had been distributed worldwide.

According to the agency, the kits were used by people conducting at-home tests between the period of March and August. The development will lead to an adjustment of Sweden’s official number of Coronavirus cases.

The agency said in its statement;

Quote:‘People who had mild symptoms or who didn’t feel any symptoms at the time of the test received false positive results.
‘The faulty test kit has been reported to the Swedish Medical Products Agency. It has been exported by China to many other countries. We have also informed relevant authorities in Europe and the WHO’.4

Sweden on Tuesday August 25, said it had 86,891 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and has also recorded 5,814 deaths.

AFP reported that Lockdown-free Sweden last week recorded its highest death toll in a six-month period for 150 years – with 4,500 of its 51,405 fatalities being Covid-19 related. It’s the highest tally from January to the end of June since 1869 when 55,431 people died, largely because of a famine. The population of Sweden then was just 4.1million, compared to 10.3million today.
