Coronavirus: France evacuates 260 citizens from Nigeria through Lagos airport

260 French citizens were airlifted from Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos to Paris on Thursday March 26, following an approval given by the Federal Government to a request by the Air France General Manager in Nigeria, Michel Colleau.
Colleau had sought for permission for the airline to land in Lagos to evacuate Dutch and French citizens stuck in Nigeria after the closure of all the major international airports to international flights.
The Nigeria Government through the Ministry of Aviation granted the permission for the Air France/KLM flight to operate on the platform of essential flights.
An Air France aircraft came in via Cotonou at 2.05pm today, and with the pre-boarding formalities completed, French nationals boarded the aircraft which took off at about 3.44pm Nigerian time. The evacuation exercise is expected to continue on April 2nd and end on April 9th 2020.
The Airport General Manager in Lagos, Mrs Victoria Shinnaba confirmed that the airline has three special flights to operate.
She said;
Quote:“We have one or two flights that will be coming in to pick their nationals, KLM is coming in today, there are three flights not only today, we have the approval, their crew are not even coming down, the crew will not come out at all.”

Veteran stage actor, Mark Blum dies at 69 of coronavirus complications

Veteran American stage actor, Mark Blum has died from complications of coronavirus. He was 69.
His wife of 15 years, Janet Zarish said he died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Wednesday after being diagnosed last week with the coronavirus. She also added that Blum was asthmatic.
The New York theater company Playwrights Horizons also released a statement confirming the death of the actor known for his roles in “Crocodile Dundee” and “Desperately Seeking Susan.”
“With love and heavy hearts, Playwrights Horizons pays tribute to Mark Blum, a dear longtime friend and a consummate artist who passed this week,” the company said. “Thank you, Mark, for all you brought to our theater, and to theaters and audiences across the world. We will miss you.”
His Broadway credits include Gore Vidal’s The Best Man (2012) and Neil Simon’s Lost In Yonkers (1991), and his most recent and final Broadway appearance in Richard Greenberg’s The Assembled Parties (2013).
Blum who was well-known in New York’s theater community, having appeared in several Broadway productions throughout his career after making his debut in Arnold Wesker’s The Merchant. Other Broadway credits include My Thing of Love (1995), A Thousand Clowns (2001), The Graduate (2002), and Twelve Angry Man (2004).

German hospitals with spare capacity will take in at least 47 coronavirus patients from Italy in a sign of European solidarity, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Thursday.
“Because we stand by our Italian friends. We can only manage this together,” Maas said in a short statement.
In Italy, an overwhelmed health care system has witnessed the outbreak kill more people than in any other country.
Ahead of an expected larger wave of domestic infections that German authorities are preparing for, a first group of six Italian patients arrived at Leipzig airport in the eastern state of Saxony on Tuesday.
The western state of North Rhine-Westphalia also announced plans to take 10 Italian patients in coming days.
As of Wednesday, there were 36,508 cases of coronavirus in Germany, with 198 deaths, the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases said. That compares with 74,386 confirmed cases in Italy, where 7,503 have died.
German Health Minister Jens Spahn said earlier on Thursday that the country was still in “the calm before the storm”, adding authorities were using the time they had won with extensive testing to prepare for a wave of cases expected in the coming weeks.

LONDON (Reuters) - A British company behind a 10-minute coronavirus antibody test, which will cost about a $1, has begun sending prototypes to laboratories for validation, which could be a game-changer in the fight against the pandemic.
Health technology firm Mologic, which created one of the first at-home pregnancy tests, is aiming for the test to be rolled out by as early as June if the trials are successful.
Antibody tests are designed to establish whether people have previously been infected, as opposed to antigen tests which show if someone actually has the COVID-19 disease caused by the virus.
Mologic said assessment and validation of its COVID-19 diagnostic test had begun this week at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and St Georges hospital, and that global partners would also examine the prototypes.
Joe Fitchett, Mologic medical director, said that while many companies were working on virus diagnostics, the aim was to create cheap, widely available tests.
“They must be made available to the vulnerable and most precious in society, in the UK or elsewhere,” he told Reuters.
“I would be really disappointed to see a good test that is shown to work to be sold on Amazon only be used by a tiny proportion of the population.”

UK Health Secretary, Matt Hancock has tested positive for coronavirus, just hours after Prime minister Boris Johnson announced he had also contracted COVID-19.
The 41-year-old who is overseeing the efforts of the NHS to cope with the epidemic in UK announced the news on Twitter, saying he had experienced mild symptoms of the virus and will be self-isolating until next Thursday.
He wrote on Twitter: Following medical advice, I was advised to test for #Coronavirus. I‘ve tested positive. Thankfully my symptoms are mild and I’m working from home & self-isolating.
In his video message, he also said: "Fortunately for me the symptoms so far have been very mild so I've been able to carry on with the work driving forward the UK response.”
He added: "I'll be continuing to do everything I can to get our carers the support that they need. And I'll be doing that from here but with no less gusto.
"And then from next Thursday, once I'm out of self-isolation and I hope with no more symptoms, then I'll be able to get back stuck in and into the office where necessary.
"But the truth is that all of us can learn that working from home can be really, really effective."
"In keeping with the guidance, the Prime Minister is self-isolating in Downing Street.
"He is continuing to lead the government's response to coronavirus."

More than 300 people have reportedly died in Iran with a further 1,000 getting sick after consuming methanol thinking it will protect them against the coronavirus disease.
Due to reports on the effectiveness of hand sanitizer in combating coronavirus, social media posts across Iran have been awash recently with theories that industrial alcohol such as methanol could cure and prevent coronavirus.

According to Fox News, after some social media posts claimed that a British school teacher and others cured themselves of the coronavirus with whisky and honey, bootleggers started packaging industrial alcohol to Iranians, with the misconception that it prevents coronavirus, since the consumption of alcohol is banned in the Islamic country.
“Other countries have only one problem, which is the new coronavirus pandemic,” said Dr. Hossein Hassanian, an adviser to Iran’s Health Ministry
“We have to both cure the people with the alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.”
“Unfortunately in some provinces, including Khuzestan and Fars, deaths from drinking methanol has exceeded the number of deaths by the new coronavirus,” Hassanian said.
Iran has reported over 29,000 confirmed cases and more than 2,200 deaths from the virus,but the World Health Organization and some International experts, fear Iran may be under-reporting its cases.

51 Italian doctors who tested positive for coronavirus have all died from the disease

The Italian Association of Doctors have confirmed the death of 51 doctors who all died after testing positive for coronavirus.
The doctors succumbed to the disease as of Friday, according to CNN, citing the Italian Association of Doctors.
The death toll comes after Filippo Anelli, the president of the association, on Thursday called for doctors in the country to be provided with more personal protective equipment (PPE).
"The first thing to do is to protect healthcare workers, to make sure they are not the ones spreading the virus. Our doctors have been sent to war unarmed," Anelli told The Financial Times in a Thursday article. "The dead do not make a noise. Yet, the names of our dead friends, our colleagues, put here in black and white, make a deafening noise."
According to the Italian National Institute of Health, more than 6,000 health workers have been infected by coronavirus as of Thursday,
Italy has the highest COVID-19 death toll of any country in the world, Out of over 86,000 cases of coronavirus in the country as of Friday, there were over 9,100 deaths.

Coronavirus: US Govt set to evacuate citizens in Nigeria

The US government has revealed plans to evacuate its citizens in Nigeria despite airport closures due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria made this known on Friday evening through a notice titled ‘Health Alert: US Mission in Nigeria.’
In the notice, the American citizens in Nigeria were advised to be in Abuja and Lagos “as soon as possible” to join arranged flights back to the US. They also advised nationals who are not in Abuja and Lagos to work with local airlines to make travel arrangements while flights are still available.
It stated: “At present, there are no scheduled flights to the United States. However, we are actively exploring options and attempting to secure flights despite global airport closures and travel restrictions.
“We will email US citizens immediately once we have flight details, routes, and costs.
“US citizens who are considering returning to the United States are urged to travel to Abuja or Lagos as soon as possible.
“The Embassy and Consulate are unable to assist with lodging, food, or transportation costs, and some hotels have closed or are closing.
“To disseminate important information and alerts for US Citizens including possible evacuation flights, the State Department uses the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program as its primary messaging system. US Citizens in Nigeria who want to be informed about emergency flights and receive other alerts should enroll in STEP immediately.”
US currently has more confirmed cases of coronavirus than any other country, with more than 86,000 positive tests.

Coronavirus: Wuhan Reopens After 2-Month Lockdown

The city in Hubei province was placed under lockdown in January with roadblocks ring-fencing its outskirts and drastic restrictions on daily life
But the major transport and industrial hub has now signalled the end of its long isolation, with state media showing the first officially sanctioned passenger train arriving back into the city just after midnight.
People are now allowed to enter but not leave, and many trains had been fully booked days in advance.
AFP reporters saw crowds of passengers arriving at Wuhan station on Saturday, most wheeling suitcases alongside them.
Some had managed to slip back into the city a day earlier on rail services that were stopping in Wuhan — but nominally banned passengers from disembarking — as enforcement of the travel ban began to ease.
Staff at the Wuhan station were all clad in full protective gear with reception desks lined up ready to process returnees who had been overseas.
China is now battling to control a wave of imported cases as infections soar abroad.
As passengers lined up to exit the station Saturday — some wearing two face masks, gloves, face screens or full protective suits — a worker in a hazmat suit shouted for anyone returning from overseas to come forward.
All arrivals in Wuhan have to show a green code on a mobile app to prove that they are healthy.
Elsewhere in China, long lines of travellers queued at train stations to board high-speed services back to Wuhan.
Passengers in Shanghai had their temperatures checked by staff in goggles and masks after boarding their Saturday morning service.
Restrictions on residents heading out of Wuhan will not be lifted until April 8, when the airport will also reopen for domestic flights.
Wuhan is the last area of Hubei province to see overland travel restrictions lifted, although some highways leading into the city had already reopened this week.

UK's First Coronavirus Mega Hospital With 4,000 Beds And Cubicle (Pics
Incredible images from inside the ExCeL Centre show construction work to transform the exhibition centre into London's emergency coronavirus hospital is underway.
The ExCeL London Centre is being refitted to create thousands of new beds for COVID-19 sufferers, complete with oxygen, ventilators and other key equipment in the battle against the deadly virus.
The exhibition centre, in East London, will become the NHS Nightingale Hospital, creating an impressive 4,000 beds.

Queen Elizabeth II has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Buckingham Palace confirmed in a shocking release a few minutes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed he tested positive for coronavirus.
According to UCR, news of the Queen testing positive for COVID-19 does not come as a surprise since there was a possibility that she could have been exposed by the virus during one of her weekly meetings with Prime Minister Boris Johnson who tested positive an hour ago.
Buckingham Palace revealed the monarch held a face-to-face with Mr. Johnson on March 11.
Her health, the palace added, remains good and stable though she has shown mild symptoms of the novel coronavirus.
In a brief statement, the palace said: “HMQ has also tested positive and is currently self-isolating at Windsor Castle. The Queen came into contact with the PM on the 11th March and is following all the appropriate advice with regards to her welfare“.
“We will be sharing constant updates of the Queen’s welfare with the public in good fate. That will be all for now“.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, had tested positive for the coronavirus after showing mild symptoms. His office said that he was self-isolating at a royal estate in Scotland.
The Prince of Wales, who last met the Queen on March 12, continues to work at his desk in his Scottish residence, Birkhall, as he is only suffering from mild symptoms.
The Queen, who left Buckingham Palace on March 19, looks set to spend the next few weeks of self-isolation at Windsor Castle with Prince Philip as she recovers from the virus.

Husband contracts coronavirus after hosting wedding anniversary party of less than 10 people (Video)

An American man has tested positive for coronavirus after hosting his 27th wedding anniversary party with less than 10 people.
According to ABC7, Mr. Emilian White and his wife Kim Gagne, celebrated their anniversary by having a small dinner with a couple of friends not more than ten this past Friday.
After the event, Mr. Emilian developed a fever and started feeling ill. He was later taken to a hospital, where he tested positive for coronavirus.
His wife, Kim, said she thought her husband would just get checked out after getting tested for the virus but she says, "It went from 0 to 100 quickly," as their last simple touch was a fist bump before the shocking news was revealed.
"I didn't know what was happening," she said via Facetime.
"We had people over and that was our mistake. We thought we were okay because we had less than 10 people. But no, don't have anyone in your house," she said.
"He's getting better, but, when they took him for a scan, the minute they took the oxygen off, it becomes very difficult to breathe," she added.
Mrs. Kim Gagne and her children are now in quarantine at home.

Coronavirus: Thai king allegedly flees country and now self-isolating in a luxury hotel with harem of 20 women in Germany

Thailand’s controversial king has allegedly fled his country and is now self-isolating in a luxury hotel in the Alpine resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany.
King Maha Vajiralongkorn ,67, also known as Rama X, is said to have booked out the entire Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl after the four-star hotel received “special permission” from the district council to accommodate the king and his entourage.
According to German tabloid Bild, the entourage included a “harem” of 20 concubines and numerous servants. But it's unclear if his four wives are with him.
Authorities have since ordered guest houses and hotels in the German region to close due to the coronavirus crisis, but a spokesperson for the local district council reportedly said the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl was an exception because “the guests are a single, homogenous group of people with no fluctuation”.
It was also reported that about 119 members of the entourage had been sent back to Thailand on suspicions they contracted coronavirus.
Tens of thousands of Thai people have risked breaking the country’s lèse-majesté laws by criticising him social media over his apparent self-isolation in a luxury location.
Under the laws, anyone who insults or criticises the monarchy could be imprisoned for up to 15 years. But a Thai hashtag which translated to “Why do we need a king?” appeared on Twitter with 1.2 million retweets after an activist claimed Vijaralongkorn was travelling on holiday in Germany while the outbreak continued to spread across Thailand.
On Saturday, the Thai Ministry of Public Health announced 109 new cases in the country, bringing the total number of infections to 1,245.

Quote:US Approves Chloroquine Phosphate For Treating Coronavirus
The Food and Drug Administration on Sunday (FDA) issued an emergency-use authorization for a pair of anti-malaria drugs as health officials work to combat the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus.
The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) said in a statement that the authorization would allow 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate and 1 million doses of chloroquine phosphate to be donated to the Strategic National Stockpile. The doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate were donated by Sandoz, while the chloroquine phosphate was developed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals.
The products will be "((distributed and prescribed by doctors to hospitalized teen and adult patients with COVID-19, as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible))," HHS said.
President Trump has repeatedly touted the anti-malaria drugs as a possible coronavirus "game changer," despite warnings from health officials that not enough is known about their effects on COVID-19. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, said during a press briefing earlier this month that much of what is known about the drug is based on "anecdotal reports."
