Policeman Bassey Peter Ikpe 'Killed' A Sick Woman In Akwa Ibom (GRAPHICS)

Mr. Bassey Peter Ikpe, a Nigerian Policeman attached to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has reportedly killed a sick woman, Mrs. Deborah Nkereuwem Nkpenie, in Akwa-Ibom State, Nigeria.

According to Johnson Ntia who shared the sad news on social media, the incident happened on Thursday 16th January, 2020.

In the series of post made on Twitter on Monday 20th January, 2020, Mr. Johnson wrote:

"A police personnel attached to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, Mr. Bassey Peter Ikpe (an Inspector of police) reportedly beat up Mrs. Deborah Nkereuwem Nkpenie (whose photograph appears here) to death on Thursday, 16th of January, 2020.

"The incident which occurred in the morning of this fateful day following the invitation which was premised on threats to the deceased by the policeman, was actually against the wise counsel of a senior police officer, the Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the state command.

"According to Ukpono Sunday Umoren, the Keke driver who saw what happened within the confines of the State Headquarters of the State Police Command, "the police man came approached my Keke which bore the woman. He shouted at her that she was lying about her sickness.

"He made efforts to drag her out. In anger, he knocked her head by the side rail of the keke. The woman was screaming that, she not well. "She began to suffocate, and found it difficult to breath. The police man kept insisting that she was lying. He even told her that, if she wants to die, she should die. "As she was screaming, the police man was trying to pull her out of the Keke, her voice grew faint.

"We were begging the police man to refrain from his hostile act towards the deceased. He ever refused us taking her to hospital. It was after she breathed her last, that he eventually ordered that she should be taken to the hospital."

"The Deputy Commissioner, Mrs. S. U. Horsefall, a Lawyer, had advised against unprofessional conduct by the said Inspector Bassey Peter Ikpe, including not bringing the both parties before the DC for interview before arraigning in court."

Police arrest Inspector for allegedly beating widow to death in Akwa Ibom






The Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested an Inspector Bassey Ikpe, for allegedly beating a widow, Mrs. Deborah Nkereuwem Nkpenie, to death.
 
Spokesman of the command Odiko Macdon, who disclosed this to newsmen in Uyo, on Wednesday, said that the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, had instructed the Deputy Commissioner, State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) to carry out thorough investigation into the matter.
 
Macdon said that the decision of the police to finally look into the alleged murder was informed by the reports in some dailies and online media in the state.

"The attention of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has been drawn to a publication in some dailies and online media that a Police personnel attached to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, one Inspr. Bassey Ikpe reportedly beat up one Mrs. Deborah Nkereuwem Nkpenie to death on Thursday, 16th of January, 2020.
To authenticate this serious allegation, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CP Imohimi Edgal has ordered the immediate arrest of the said Inspector. The Commissioner has instructed the Deputy Commissioner, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter, while reiterating the Command’s commitment to policing with great respect for human rights" Macdon said.

 
The incident took place on January 16, following the invitation of the deceased by the policeman, who was an Investigating Police Officer (IPO) in an ongoing case.
 
An eye witness, Mrs Mfonobong Peter, a sister to the deceased, narrated how the said police man, who is the IPO in an ongoing matter, allegedly barged into the bedroom of the deceased to forcefully dress her up. She said that the IPO claimed that the deceased was lying about her state of health in order to escape being arraigned in court.

“My late sister was beaten to death by Insp. Bassey Ikpe. He had threatened her repeatedly since this matter came up. My sister had waist pains arising from the dislocation she had while caring for her late husband. This made it difficult for her to move about freely. She had become almost bedridden because of the difficulty in movement. She was highly hypertensive due to the health complications that led to her husband’s death. But this police man refused to heed the advice of the Deputy Commissioner of Police. I don’t know what personal interest he had in the matter.
“He had forced her to come to the police station so that they could appear in court on a fictitious criminal charge, against the advice of the deputy commissioner of police the previous day. He beat my sister to death,” she alleged.

 
It was gathered that the sister and the brother of the widow's late husband took the deceased to the police over her late husband’s property.
