Details of what brought former Kaduna State Senator and civil rights activist, Shehu Sani, into trouble with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and resulting in his Tuesday’s arrest and detention, emerged last night.

Vanguard gathered that the vocal former lawmaker had reportedly used the name of the Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, to collect the sum of $30,000 from a popular car dealer in the state with an assurance to shield him and his company from any form of inquiry by the anti-graft agency.

However, it was gathered that the cash payment soon became a source of anger between Shehu Sani and the car dealer and eventually drew the attention of Magu and EFCC.

The former senator is also said to have declined to pick his calls or respond to text messages sent to him by the operatives of the anti-graft agency over the development.

An operative said on Tuesday that it was on the basis of his refusal to honour previous invitations that they stormed his home and arrested him for interrogation

“The former Senator is with us as we speak and he is going to be with us even up to the New Year and we hope to grill him on various issues of interest to us, “an official of the anti-graft agency said on Tuesday.

Asked to disclose the exact amount reportedly taken from victims by the former lawmaker, the source declined to be specific; pointing out that the figure would be made known after interrogation of the former Central Kaduna Senator.

The arrest of Shehu Sani coincides with the rejection of a no-case-submission by another Senator and former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, by a Plateau State High Court on Tuesday

Governor Nasir El-Rufai's son, Bello who reacted to report of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arresting former Kaduna lawmaker Shehu Sani over an alleged extortion, disclosed that he was trained to destroy his political opponents. 
 
Bello who alongside his father have been at loggerheads with Shehu Sani, stated that ''there’s a limit to how deceit under the veil of populism can take one.''

EFCC gets court order to detain Shehu Sani for 14 days






The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained a court order to detain the former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani for 14 days. 
 
The former lawmaker was accused of extorting Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors by allegedly demanding for $10,000 in November 2019. The former lawmaker allegedly promised to pass the money on to EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu. Sani was also accused of asking for N4m to be given to Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Tanko over a case he allegedly claimed won't see the light of the day. 
 
According to the anti-graft agency, the 14-day detention order against Shehu Sani will help in a thorough investigation into the case.

Shehu Sani Vs Dauda: EFCC Mulls Lie Detector Test To Determine Liar



As the accusations and counter-accusations continue between embattled Senator Shehu Sani and CEO of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may be inching closer to administering a lie detector test on both men.

Dauda says the senator extorted $24,000 from him under the guise of helping him resolve an ongoing case with the EFCC. He said he gave Sani $10,000 in November 2019, which he said the former lawmaker promised to pass on to EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

The ASD Motors boss also accused Sani of asking for N4m to be given to Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Tanko.

However, Sani has vehemently denied the allegations, saying that the only transaction he had with ASD Motors was car purchase.

However, The Nation reported, quoting an unnamed EFCC source, that investigators will interview Dauda’s wife on Monday over the matter before deciding whether to proceed with the lie detector test which will determine who is lying between the two men.

Also called a Polygraph, a lie detector test is a device or procedure that measures and records several physiological indicators such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and skin conductivity while a person is asked and answers a series of questions.

Wikipedia says, “The belief underpinning the use of the polygraph is that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those associated with non-deceptive answers.”

The EFCC recently said it obtained a court order to detain Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, for 14 days.

Sani was arrested on Tuesday, December 31.

I’ve never had anything to do with Shehu Sani - CJN Ibrahim Muhammad speaks on N4m scandal






The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Ibrahim Muhammad has dissociated himself from the case of former Senator, Shehu Sani who is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged extortion.
 
LIB reported earlier that the Kaduna central senatorial district lawmaker was accused of asking Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors for money to influence the outcome of his (Dauda) court cases using his connection with the CJN and some other judges.
 
However in statement released on Sunday January 5, Muhammad disclosed that he has never met Sani as he denied having a link to the case. The CJN also vowed to make sure perpetrators of “such falsehood”  never get away with it. 
 
The statement reads in part; 
 

“Our attention has been drawn to the story making the round in some national dailies where it was reported that Senator Shehu Sani allegedly approached Alhaji Sani Dauda of ASD Motors and purportedly demanded for the sum of N4, 000,000 to give to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Dr Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, to settle some unnamed four Judges over a case he (Shehu Sani) allegedly claimed won’t see the light of the day,” the CJN said in a statement which Festus Akande, spokesman of the supreme court, issued on his behalf.
“Let it be known that if the statement credited to Shehu Sani was actually made by him, it is simply a blatant lie, a figment of his imagination and an orchestrated falsehood immodestly concocted to malign, smear and disingenuously tarnish the good image and reputation of the CJN with a view to gaining financial reward.
“Even though the veracity of the true source of the unsubstantiated statement has not yet been ascertained to know if it was really from the former Senator, it is, however imperative to keep the records straight by letting the public know that Justice Tanko Muhammad has never, in his entire life, seen or had any form of encounter or interactions, either directly or remotely with Shehu Sani, let alone giving him assurances of what is not only unethical but equally despicable and inglorious, to say the least.
“The outcome of the ongoing investigations will determine the next line of action to be taken regarding the flagrant defamation of the character of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.”

Shehu Sani shuns lie detector test, wants to swear with the Quran in alleged $24,000 extortion scandal






Former Senator Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani on Monday January 6 refused to take a lie detector test over the alleged $24,000 he was accused of extorting from the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda. 
 
Though Sani opted to swear by the Holy Qur’an, it is however speculated that he might undergo the polygraph test with his wife today January 7 as he has already been moved out of his detention cell to the Polygraph Clinic in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) annex in Wuse 2, Abuja.
 
The Nation reported he said; 
 

 “I won’t take the test; I do not trust the machine. I am not sure whether or not the machine is working well.
“Instead of polygraph, give me the Holy Qur’an to swear with.”

 
A highly-placed source said Sani was asked to put his resistance into writing for record purposes. 
 

“Following his refusal, our detectives did not force him to go through the test.
“But they asked him to write a statement on his refusal to undergo polygraph because he had earlier sworn by his grave but he has not been straightforward.” the source told The Natiom

 
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda who has allegedly been under pressure to withdraw the petition is expected to go through the polygraph test with his wife today January 7.

 “Mrs. Dauda was expected to be interrogated on Monday (yesterday) but she was slightly indisposed. The complainant got in touch with us and promised to come with his wife on Wednesday.
“So far, Dauda has not withdrawn his petition against Senator Sani because he told our team that he was sure of his facts.
“On his part, Sani said he did not extort any money from Dauda. The job of the investigators is to get to the root of transactions between the accuser and the accused. We will crack this case.”

Alleged fraud: EFCC ransacks Shehu Sani’s Abuja residence






Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today December 8th, conducted a search at the Abuja home of former Senator Shehu Sani. The operatives stormed the apartment in Wuse, Abuja at about 3:30pm to look for incriminating evidence against the former Kaduna senator.

SERAP Asks EFCC To Release Shehu Sani


The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately release former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani.

We reports that Operatives of EFCC on Thursday reportedly invaded the Abuja residence of Senator Shehu Sani over alleged extortion.

It was gathered that the EFCC officials stormed the apartment in Wuse, Abuja at about 3:30pm on Wednesday to look for incriminating evidence against the former Kaduna senator.

This is following arrest of Sani last week for alleged extortion of $20,000 from the owner of ASD Motors.

The government critic, who represented Kaduna central senatorial district between 2015 and 2019, allegedly collected money from Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors, promising to pass it on to Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the anti-graft agency.

Reacting, in a post on its official Twitter page, SERAP called on EFCC to charge Sani with a recognizable criminal offence rather than prolonging his detention.

The group noted that the continued detention of Sani without charge was against the principle of being innocent until proven guilty.

SERAP, therefore, urged the anti-graft agency to release Sani on bail pending investigation.

The post reads: “EFCC should immediately release activist Shehu Sani detained on allegations of extortion or charge him with a recognizable criminal offende.

“By prolonging his detention without charge or trial, Mr Sani is being treated like a convicted criminal, in violation of national and international law.

“The continued detention of Mr Sani without charge is against the principle of being innocent until proven guilty.

“Nigeria is a state party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Article 9 of the ICCPR states that “anyone who is arrested shall be brought promptly before a judge or other officer authorized by law to exercise judicial power.”

“There are similar provisions in the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).

“The EFCC should promptly investigate any allegations against Mr Sani and release him on bail pending the conclusion of any such investigation.”

I’ve been framed but I won’t be silenced — Shehu Sani reacts to allegation of extortion






Former Senator, Shehu Sani has officially reacted to allegation of collecting money from Sani Dauda, owner of ASD Motors which he allegedly promised to pass on to the acting chairman of the EFCC Ibrahim Magu, to influence an investigation, and also allegedly asking for more money to bribe the chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), Ibrahim Tanko and some other judges to influence the outcome of a court case. 
 
In a statement released on Friday after his two houses were searched by operatives of the anti-graft agency, Sani alleged that his arrest is politically motivated as he also denied trying to bribe the CJN. 
 
He also accused the Federal Government of trying to use the bribery story to shut him up after he became a critic of the Buhari-led administration. 
 
The statement read; 
 

“The allegations of ‘extortion’ against me is baseless, fact-less, unfounded, hollow and unsubstantial.
“It is a scripted stream of mischievous concoctions and utter fabrications using a puppet state agent; all aimed at splashing faeces and mud on me.
“The extortion allegation is nothing but a wholesale falsehood, packaged in a phantom anti-graft facade to taint, stain and mute me. That shall never happen if I am alive.
“I have made my statement and provided all my facts against their package of lies and I demand the EFCC to make public all the sheets of our statements and supporting documents for the world to see.
“My detention is unfair, unjust, prearranged and politically motivated.
“Fascism thrives in frame up of its critics. They claim extortion and here they are closing my bank accounts, searching my houses and offices and demanding I declare my assets, of which I have already done that at the CCB (Code of Conduct Bureau) last year when I left the Senate. 
“Frame-up cannot silence me! I have never ever met with the CJN or any judge or judges or ever called directly or indirectly to offer to give or to give directly or indirectly any form of gratification from Alhaji Sani Dauda.

Leave Buhari out of Shehu Sani’s arrest – EFCC






The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has debunked claims of Senator Shehu Sani being prosecuted for being a fierce critic of President Buhari. 
 
Recall that the former Kaduna lawmaker was accused of collecting money from Sani Dauda owner of ASD Motors, promising to pass it on to the acting chairman of the anti-graft agency Ibrahim Magu, to influence an investigation. He was also accused of asking for money he promised to give to Ibrahim Muhammad, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) and some other judges to influence the outcome of a court case. 
 
In a statement released by EFCC's acting spokesperson Tony Orilade on Friday January 10, the anti-graft agency asked Nigerians to detach President Buhari from Shehu Sani's case as none of his rights have been abused. 
 
Orilade who insisted that some Nigerians “are not really conversant with his offence", added that it is unfortunate that Nigerians are defending him. 
 

”Invariably, claims in some quarters of the breach of his fundamental human rights, is merely in the imagination of the purveyors of such claims.
“Let it be stated clearly, that Senator Shehu Sani has questions to answer as regards the alleged involvement in name-dropping, and particularly that he obtained $25,000 from Alhaji Sani Dauda, the ASD Motors boss, in order to help shield him from investigations being carried out by the EFCC.
“For certain people to brazenly come out to defend a suspect, who is being probed for a serious offence as the one committed by Sani shows that they are not really conversant with his offence.

Aide accuses EFCC of freezing Shehu Sani's bank account and asking him to declare his assets






The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have been accused of freezing former Kaduna lawmaker, Shehu Sani's bank accounts and asking him to declare his assets. 
 
In a statement released by Shehu Sani's aide Suleiman Ahmed on Sunday January 12, the anti-graft agency was accused of bias as the former lawmaker's accuser who admitted to giving bribe has not been detained. 
“Mr Orilade, what is the connection between allegations of extortion of $25,000 and then searching his residence, blocking his accounts and forcing him to declare his assets?” Mr Ahmed said in response to EFCC spokesperson, Tony Orilade.
 
Ahmed also disclosed that President Buhari's close friend, Alhaji Samaila Isa Funtua who was mentioned in the frame up against Shehu Sani is also yet to be invited for questioning.
 
When Premium Times contacted Mr Ahmed, he said it was Mr Sani’s GTB account that was frozen. When asked how he confirmed that the account had been frozen, he said Mr Sani’s family members who tried to access the account, as is the norm, were prevented from doing so since last week.
 
However, the acting spokesperson to the EFCC, Tony Orilade, he said he was not aware of the commission freezing Mr Sani’s bank account. He said the commission was still investigating the embattled ex-lawmaker.

Shehu Sani sues EFCC for N100m






The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been sued by the former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district Shehu Sani, for "unlawfully" detaining him for nearly three weeks.
 
Shehu Sani's lawyer, Abdul Ibrahim disclosed that the lawsuit was filed before Justice A. B. Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Gudu, Abuja. The lawsuit's hearing is expected to begin on Monday January 20, 2020.
 
Ibrahim who filed the "motion under Enforcement of Fundamental Human Rights Procedure in the case between Sen. Shehu Sani vs EFCC and ASD Motors", revealed that his client is suing the anti-graft agency for N100m. 
 
Recall that Shehu Sani is currently being detained by the anti-graft agency for allegedly collecting $25,000 from the ASD Motors proprietor Alhaji Sani Dauda, promising to pass it on to EFCC's Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu.

EFCC confronts Shehu Sani with 13 audio tapes






Former senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani's row with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken another turn as the anti-graft agency played some of the alleged bribe chat tapes to him in the presence of his lawyers, Barrister Audu Mohammed Lawal and Barrister Glory Peter. 
 
The former lawmaker who was accused of collecting $25,000 from the Chairman of ASD Motors Alhaji Sani Dauda, which he promised to pass on to the Acting Chairman of EFCC Ibrahim Magu, admitted that it was his voice but claimed that some part of the audio tape has been deleted. 
 
It was gathered that Shehu Sani only recanted five out the 13 audio tapes played while he was interrogated. 
 
A source told The Nation; 
 

“A conversation between Sani and the complainant has introduced another dimension to his claims. At a meeting that took place at the Jabi office of the Commission on Wednesday, Sen. Sani, who had hitherto denied receiving any bribe money from Alhaji Sani Dauda, Chairman of ASD Motors, recanted his words after listening to five of the 13 voice recordings of his conversation and that of the chairman of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda.

“After listening to the first of the 13 audio recordings, the Senator reportedly said ‘Do you have another one?’

“By the time the second and the third were played to him in the presence of his lawyers, Barrister Audu Mohammed Lawal, and Barrister Glory Peter, the embattled Senator said: “I am okay with this. I am okay with this”.

“When asked if he is familiar with the voices in the audio, he said: “Yes, that is my voice except that some aspects of the recording have been deleted”.


“Asked whether the EFCC or the complainant did the deletion, Sani said: “I am not saying you people deleted it. But that is not the complete conversation.


“In the voice recording, Shehu Sani could be heard in Hausa language pleading with the complainant that he should do everything to make sure they resolve the issue because of their reputation.


“He was quoted as saying in one of the tapes as follows: ‘You have a family and I have a family; think of the way people will see the matter even though it is not public money’, he was alleged to have pleaded in Hausa.


“I believe you already discussed with Bashir; Bashir must have given you his personal advice on what we need to do so that this matter is buried here."

 

According to the Nation, Shehu Sani who allegedly admitted that the $25,000 was “bribe money",  had two meetings with the Chairman of ASD Motors; one at his house and the second at his office after the Muslim “Isha”(Dark night) prayers.
 
The source added; 

 

“Contrary to Senator Sani’s public posturing of his innocence in the alleged crime, he reportedly begged profusely after listening to the recordings that the matter should not be taken further to the media.”

 

Commenting on the alleged breakthrough in the investigation against Senator Shehu Sani, EFCC's acting Head of Media, Tony Orilade said; 
 

“All I can say is that the investigation of Senator Shehu Sani is ongoing and he would soon be charged to court.”

 
Shehu Sani however insisted that he is innocent of the allegation in a leak from his detention cell. He said; 
 

“On his part, Sen. Sani said: ‘Alhaji Sani Dauda and his hidden sponsors have not been able to provide any proof of their allegations.


“I’m unjustly incarcerated on the ground of an arranged two-page petition backed with no evidential or documentary proof.
“The bribe story is a heap of blatant lies and outright falsehood concocted and fabricated, using a front and the EFCC to premiere a state drama.

“ASD is a barely educated front for a state mission. Criminalizing me, or “framing me”, will not silence me, bend me or compromise me.

“They claim extortion and here they are closing my bank accounts, searching my houses and offices and demanding I declare my assets of which I have already done that at the CCB last year when I left the Senate.

“The extortion allegation is nothing but a wholesale falsehood, packaged in a phantom anti-graft facade to taint, stain and mute me. That shall never happen if I am alive.”

Shehu Sani granted N10m bail







Embattled former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district, Shehu Sani has been granted a N10m bail by a federal high court in Abuja. 
 
Shehu Sani was granted bail after being arraigned on two-count charge of bribery on Monday January 27, following his lawyer Abdul Ibrahim's argument of need for him to take care of his family, businesses and prepare adequately for trial.
 
Though EFCC's counsel Abba Mohammed opposed the bail application, Shehu Sani was granted bail of N10m by Justice Inyang Ekwo who stated that the prosecution did not show good reasons why the defendant should not be admitted to bail.
 
The former lawmaker's bail condition includes producing a surety with a landed property that is worth the bail sum, which will be verified by the court's registrar. He is to submit his international passport to the court and must also get the permission of the court before travelling outside the country. 
 
Justice Ekwo then adjourned the case till February 24 for commencement of trial.

Shehu Sani regains freedom after being detained by the EFCC for 4 weeks







Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani has been released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after perfecting his bail conditions. 
 
Recall LIB reported that the former lawmaker who was arrested on December 31, 2019, was granted a N10m bail after being arraigned before Justice Inyang Ekwo on two counts of fraud involving alleged extortion of $25,000 from a businessman in November 2019. He was accused of extorting the businessman on grounds of passing the money to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad and the acting Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.
 

 
Sani whose bail conditions include submitting his international passport to the court and producing a surety with a landed property that is worth the bail sum, was released around 6pm on Thursday January 30 as confirmed by his media aide, Suleiman Ahmed.

Shehu Sani has opened up on his ordeal while being detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegation of extorting the Chairman of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda of $25,000 which he allegedly promised to give to Chief Justice of Nigeria Ibrahim Muhammad to influence some pending cases in court, and also to the acting Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu. 
 
The former Senator who was released on Thursday, said his incarceration for 30 days in EFCC's jail was unfair, unjust and a clear breach of his fundamental rights. 
 
Sani insisted that he was framed as he alleged that he was placed in the underground cell of the EFCC on the orders of its chairman.
 
His statement reads; 
 

"I wish to thank all individuals and groups that have shown concern, support, solidarity, and prayers during my 30 days of incarceration in the underground cell of the EFCC on the orders of its chairman.

"With gratitude to Almighty Allah,  my special appreciation to Amnesty International, SERAP, HURIWA, and other groups, numerous to mention.

"My incarceration for 30 days in the jail of EFCC was unfair, unjust and a clear breach of my fundamental rights and hence stands condemned.

"During my unjust stay in the EFCC cell, I was subjected to traumatizing interrogations; My houses and offices were searched.

"They compelled me to declare my assets, they tried to subject me to polygraph lie detector tests, my accounts were blocked, and my phone was seized, all in the name of fictional $24,000 or $25, 000 extortion.

"Any Information planted in the media by the EFCC spokesperson while I was in their custody about me is outrightly false and nothing but a bacterial and fungal infested concoctions, typical of their style.

"Our country will continue to be at the bottom strata of the transparency International index as long as our anti-graft agencies only use their might and arsenal to crush ants while lacking the courage, the heart, and the liver to confront the snakes, the vultures and the hyenas of the ruling establishment.

"They can frame me, detain me but can’t silence me.

"I shall abide by all the conditions of my bail and appreciate the courage, compassion, and wisdom of the court in granting me the bail.

"In an ideal democratic state, all agencies of the government are obliged to operate within the dictates and the ambit of the rule of law or the nation leaps into tyranny.

"The rule book of Stalin, The manual of Hitler or road map of Mussolini should not be the guidance and the compass of the nation’s security and anti-corruption agencies in their quest to sanitize our country."
