John Obi Mikel and his family ‘racially abused by Fenerbahce fans’ as his club take legal action










Ex-Super Eagles captain and Trabzonspor midfielder, John Obi Mikel, was allegedly the target of racist abuse from Fenerbahce supporters after their Turkish Super Lig clash on Saturday. 
 
It was reported that thousands of abusive and harmful messages were sent to Obi Mikel's social media accounts, as well as to his family, as his side defeated their arch-rival 2-1.
 
Turkish media detailed how abusive messages were sent to the player's Instagram page. 'including use of the N-word and banana emojis'.
 
His club, Trabzonspor have confirmed an official criminal complaint over racist abuse allegedly suffered by the former Chelsea midfielder. 
 
In a statement released, Trabzonspor wrote: 'Racism is a shelter for helpless and ignorant.  
 
'We condemn the racist attacks against our player Obi Mikel after the match against Fenerbahce and we bring to the public attention that a criminal complaint has been filed against the assailants. #WeStandwithObi #SayNoToRacism' 
 
Reacting on Instagram, Mikel wrote: 'We are all one and equal. It’s just a game at the end of the day.#saynotoracism.'
 

 
During the match on Saturday, Mikel was reported to have been involved in a furious argument with Fenerbahce midfielder Emre Belozoglu at the final whistle, they 'had to be separated by team-mates.' 
 
Turkish citizens, as well as Trabzonspor supporters, have been tweeting their support for Mikel with "#WeStandWithObi"
 
Back in 2013, former Premier League stars Didier Drogba and Emmanuel Eboue were subjected to monkey chants from Fenerbahce supporters while playing for Galatasaray.

EPL: Man Utd confirms Ighalo’s jersey number

Manchester United have confirmed that new striker, Odion Ighalo will wear the number 25 jersey number at the club.

The Red Devils disclosed this in a statement on their official website on Tuesday.

DAILY POST recalls that Ighalo joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men on transfer deadline day on six months loan from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

“Ighalo has been handed the number 25 squad number at Man United.

“ He joined the club on a six-month loan deal from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

“That shirt has been vacant since Antonio Valencia left Old Trafford last summer, bringing an end to his 10-season career as a Manchester United player.

“The 30-year-old striker’s move was completed on Friday on six a month deal.

Chelsea legend, Eidur Gudjohnsen has criticised Premier League giants, Manchester United for signing Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo.

Gudjohnsen says Ighalo’s move to Old Trafford simply means that Man United can no longer attract the best strikers in the world.
DAILY POST recalls that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side secured the signing of Ighalo on transfer deadline day on loan from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua until the end of the season.

Speaking in an interview with Transfer Talk podcast, Gudjohnsen said: “It comes back to the time of the season of this Ighalo’s transfer to Man United.

“I do not think any of the best strikers in the world are available.

Gernot Rohr hints at Ighalo returning to Super Eagles after Man United move

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has hinted that he would like to have new Manchester United striker, Odion Ighalo back in the national team.

Ighalo retired from the national team after leading Super Eagles to win bronze at the 2019 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Egypt.

The 30-year-old joined the Red Devils on transfer deadline day on loan from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua until the end of the season to become the first Nigerian player to play for the Old Trafford club.

Speaking in an interview with AOIFootball, Rohr said the young players in the Super Eagles could learn a lot from Ighalo, who he described as a great goal scorer.

The 66-year-old said: “We are pleased about Ighalo’s new team, joining Manchester United is a fantastic challenge for him as a player, and I spoke already with him, and you know he is an excellent player on and off the pitch.

“If a player is playing for Manchester United, every coach of a national teams would like to have such a player.

“Our young players in the team could learn a lot on the side of this great goal scorer.”

Ligue 1: Di Maria cautions Mbappe for clashing with PSG manager after substitution

Paris Saint-Germain winger, Angel Di Maria, has cautioned team-mate Kylian Mbappe, over his temper after he was taken off the pitch during their 5-0 win over Montpellier.

The Ligue 1 champions were already ahead by five goals before manager Thomas Tuchel took Mbappe off for Mauro Icardi in the 68th minute.
Mbappe was furious with Tuchel, and both men exchanged words before the player took his seat.

“It is very difficult, nobody wants to go off, everyone wants to play, that is normal,” Di Maria told Canal Plus after the game.

“Kylian wants to score, but the manager decided that he was to come off, there are boys on the bench who want to come on and have the ability, he needs to get that.”

Mbappe’s behaviour might not be unconnected to the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The former Monaco star has been seriously linked with Real Madrid and Liverpool.

However, PSG will look to keep the 21-year-old, who has scored 14 goals in 13 league appearances this season.

Kwadwo Asamoah left out as Victor Moses makes Inter Milan’s Europa League squad

Former Nigeria international, Victor Moses, has been included in Inter Milan’s updated squad for the Europa League.

Antonio Conte’s men have dropped down in the competition, after they finished third in their Champions League group.

Inter will play Ludogorets away on February 20, before hosting the return leg at the San Siro a week later.

Conte has made four changes to the A list ahead of the match.

Moses, Christian Eriksen and Ashley Young who all arrived in the January window, made the cut.

President Buhari appoints Daniel Amokachi as Nigeria’s Football Ambassador






President Buhari has appointed retired Nigerian professional footballer, former Super Eagles player and Assistant Coach, Daniel Amokachi, Nigeria’s Football Ambassador.
 
A statement released by presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, said as Nigeria’s Football Ambassador, a largely ceremonial role, Amokachi will assist the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to scout for talents, be part of processes to revive the country’s football development, as well as mentor young sports men and women.
 
46-year-old Amokachi was a member of the 1994 Super Eagles Team that won the African Nations Cup in Tunisia and was also in the Nigerian Olympic Football Team to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics that won the Gold Medal.
 
In addition to his football exploits in Europe, particularly in England where he won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995, Amokachi after retirement has managed Nasarawa United and Enyimba Football Club of Aba.

FA Cup: Klopp makes promise to Liverpool youngsters ahead of Chelsea clash

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has promised the club’s Under 23 youngsters that some of them will get an opportunity to play against Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth-round clash next month.

Liverpool’s Under 23 coach, Neil Critchley made this known following the Reds’ 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury in the FA Cup fourth-round encounter on Tuesday night at Anfield.

Liverpool will now play Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in the fifth-round during the weekend of March 5.

“The manager [Jurgen Klopp] sent a message prior to the game with some words of advice and support which was fantastic,” Critchley said as quoted by Metro UK after the match.

“He is delighted with the performance and the result.

“He sent a message during half time and also at the end of the game.

“There was a message before the kick-off that Chelsea away could be an opportunity for some of them and they put in a spectacular performance tonight against Shrewsbury.”

Chelsea football legend, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has taken a swipe at Manchester United over their deadline transfer deal for Odion Ighalo.

Lionel Messi has criticised Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal for saying players were not working hard under former coach Ernesto Valverde.

Valverde was sacked in January and replaced by Quique Setien.

Abidal, a former team-mate of Messi, made the comments in an interview with Spanish newspaper Diario Sport.

But on Tuesday Messi, 32, responded: "When you talk about players, you have to give names because if not, it gives air to things which are not true."

Valverde was sacked when Barcelona were top of La Liga.

In the newspaper interview Abidal said: "Many players weren't satisfied or working hard and there was also an internal communication problem.

"The relationship between the coach and the dressing room has always been good but there are things as an ex-player that I could smell. I told the club what I thought and we reached a decision [on Valverde]."

Six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi responded on Instagram, writing: "Sincerely, I don't like to do these things but I think that people have to be responsible for their jobs and own their decisions.

"The players [are responsible] for what happens on the pitch and we are the first to admit when we haven't been good. The heads of the sports department have to take their responsibilities too and above all own the decisions they make."

In his interview with Diario Sport, Abidal also said he thought Messi was happy at the club and a new contract for the Argentine talisman was currently being negotiated.

Barcelona And Real Madrid Knocked Out Of Copa del Rey 



The Copa del Rey's new single-elimination format claimed its biggest victims on Thursday, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both being eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Madrid lost 4-3 to Real Sociedad at home before Barcelona conceded a late goal to lose 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao on the most surprising night of a competition filled with upsets.

Defending champion Valencia also lost on Tuesday and Villarreal was eliminated on Wednesday. Sevilla and Atlético Madrid had already been ousted in previous rounds.


Only the semifinals are being played over two legs this season, giving smaller clubs greater chances of knocking out bigger teams.

The surprising last four will also include Granada and second-division club Mirandés. It's the first time in a decade that neither Madrid nor Barcelona made it to the last four in the Copa. At least one of the Spanish powerhouses had reached the final every year since the 2009-10 season, when Sevilla won the title. Barcelona made the final the last six years in a row.

“This is the new Copa,” Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets said. “We are playing one match, away from home, and in one play you are eliminated.”


Real Sociedad ended Madrid's 21-game unbeaten run with its win at the Santiago Bernabéu to reach the semifinals for the first time in six years.


Athletic got past Barcelona thanks to Iñaki Williams' winner three minutes into second-half stoppage time, adding to the club's struggles since it fired coach Ernesto Valverde and replaced him with Quique Setién.

Barcelona is yet to impress under the new coach, and players and club directors have been at odds recently.

“I think we took a step forward. We played better than our opponent,” Setién said. “Everything went well except for the result.”

Barcelona dominated throughout the second half and came close to breaking the deadlock with clear chances for Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi near the end. But it was Athletic that found the late winner when Williams flicked a header into the far corner after a cross by Ibai Gómez.

Athletic, the second-most successful club in the Copa with 23 titles, behind Barcelona, had needed penalty shootouts to advance against second-division clubs in the two previous rounds.

Messi made his 75th Copa appearance, equaling the Barcelona record held by Josep Samitier since 1932.

Real Sociedad's victory halted Madrid's eight-game winning streak and handed the club its first loss in all competitions since October.


It also ended Madrid's hopes of winning the cup competition for the first time since 2014.

Real Sociedad, a semifinalist in 2014, will be looking to win its third Copa del Rey trophy — and first since 1987.

“Our fans deserved a prize like this," Real Sociedad coach Imano Alguacil said. ”This victory means a lot, coming at a packed Bernabéu, against a team like Real Madrid, with our team playing well. You can imagine how we are feeling right now."

The visitors looked in control for most of the match but Madrid came close to pulling off the comeback after scoring late goals in the second half.

“We gave everything we had in the end, but it was too late,” Madrid defender Marcelo said. “It's hard to come back after conceding four goals at home. It's disappointing, but we still have other competitions ahead of us.”

Madrid had been dominant thanks in part to a stout defense, having conceded only 13 goals in 22 Spanish league matches.

Young Norwegian playmaker Martin Odegaard, playing for Real Sociedad on a loan from Madrid, didn't celebrate after opening the scoring in the 22nd minute off the rebound of a save by Madrid goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.

Young Swedish striker Alexander Isak added to the lead with goals two minutes apart early in the second half — a volley in the 54th and a shot into the top corner in the 56th.

The 20-year-old Isak — who has scored in five consecutive matches — had already had a goal disallowed for offside after video review just minutes after the break.

Marcelo pulled Madrid closer with a low shot from inside the area in the 59th, but Mikel Merino increased the visitors' lead again from close range in the 69th.

Rodrygo netted Madrid's second in the 81st, two minutes after Vinícius Júnior had a goal disallowed by video review. The third came through a header by Nacho Ramos three minutes into stoppage time.

Copa del Rey: ‘It was a shame’ – Setien reacts as Barcelona lose to Athletic Bilbao

Barcelona boss, Quique Setien says it was a shame that his side did not defeat Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey quarter-final encounter on Thursday.

According to Setien, Barcelona controlled the game and created more chances against the host but at the end they crashed out from the competition.

Athletic Bilbao defeated Barcelona, thanks to a late goal from Inaki Williams.

“Bilbao’s goals did come from a play that was not risky,” Setien told reporters after the game as quoted by Goal.
“This is one of the things that cannot be controlled.

“Apart from the result, we did everything well against them. I am delighted with the way the players played.

“We were in charge of the game in the second half,” Setien added.

“We had everything in control that our goalkeeper did not have any saves to make. it was a shame because we controlled game against Bilbao.

“They scored us, while we created a lot of many clear chances and it was too late for us to equaliser in face we were the better side during the encounter.

“We did not deserve to be out of the competition and it’s disappointing that the tournament is a one-leg tie.

EPL: Man Utd reduce Pogba’s transfer fee by £30m

Manchester United chiefs have cut Paul Pogba’s valuation by £30million and are ready to sell the player in the summer, the UK Sun reports.

United turned down offers for Pogba last summer, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looked to build his team around the midfielder.
However, with Bruno Fernandes’ arrival and Pogba’s injury problems, the club is ready to do business.

United’s hierarchy have now accepted the player’s desire to leave, is having a detrimental effect at Old Trafford.

However, they still want to make a profit on Pogba, who they paid almost £100m to sign from Juventus in August 2016.

An initial price tag of £180m was put on the 26-year-old, following his performances at the 2018 World Cup, which he helped France win.

But United will now accept £150m for the player, who has made only eight appearances for United this season due to a persistent ankle injury.

Inaki Williams late goal in injury time was enough to knock out Catalans giant Barcelona from the quarter final of Copa del Rey. Barcelona were expected to capitalize on rival Real Madrid's elimination from the competition but the Catalans were unable to defeat Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames .

Barcelona's coach Quique Setién left French forward Antoine Greizmann in substitution bench and opted to use Lionel Messi as a false nine while being flanked by teenager Ansui Fati on the left and Sergi Roberto on the right. Barcelona struggled to find the back of the net for the entire duration of the game with Barça's best chance coming in the 88th minute when Arthur slots the ball into the part of Lionel Messi but the Argentine shot was blocked by Athletic Bilbao's goal keeper.

Inaki Williams got the only goal of the game late into injury time, when he headed home an in swinging cross from Gomez to win the game for the home team.

Barcelona joins Real Madrid, Villarreal and Valencia to exit Copa del Rey in the quarter final after losing 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao.

For the first time since the 2002/2003 season, neither Atletico Madrid, Barcelona nor Real Madrid will play in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Ighalo To Miss Manchester United's Training Camp Over Coronavirus Risk



Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo will miss the club's training camp in Spain because of fears the coronavirus outbreak could lead to him being refused entry back into the UK.

Nigerian Ighalo, 30, flew to Manchester from China last weekend after signing on loan from Shanghai Shenhua.

"He might have liked to have come with the players and got to know them," manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told MUTV.

"But the risk [of border restrictions tightening] we don't want to take."

Meanwhile, midfielder Scott McTominay and defender Axel Tuanzebe, who have both been out with long-term injuries, will travel to Spain.

United are not due to return until late on Friday before their Premier League game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday, 17 February (20:00 GMT kick-off).

Juventus forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has said that Maurizio Sarri’s side ‘need’ to keep working hard in order to achieve their aim this season.

Ronaldo said this while reacting to Juventus’ 2-1 defeat to Hellas Verona in the Serie A encounter on Saturday night.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder, Emmanuel Petit has said that Lionel Messi may leave the Catalan club next summer.

The future of the Argentine captain has been thrown into doubt following his clash with Sporting Director, Eric Abidal.
The Argentine captain can leave Nou Camp for nothing in the summer thanks to a clause added in his contract.

“With the Eric Abidal and Lionel Messi situation, it all depends on what happens in the next transfer window,” Petit was quoted by the Mirror.

He went on to explain that many players at the club, including Messi were disappointed with how the club had handled last summer transfer activity, “with so many players rumoured to come in who never came, Neymar being one example.”

“When you add in the investigation into medical procedures involving Abidal and the club, it has all contributed to his [Messi] image being slightly affected.

“Abidal has also had recent trouble with Xavi, who’s a legend at Barca.

“It was hard to understand what was going on there, with talk of Xavi joining as manager — it was all very unclear.

“Seeing Xavi’s reaction afterwards, it showed that there’s a lack of communication and that someone is lying.

“Something similar has happened with Messi.

“We’re not used to Messi speaking out on social media in such a manner,” he said.

He noted that Messi, whon he said is Usually very quiet, “so clearly he must be very upset.”

“If you look at Abidal’s place in all this, I’m sure the club will be looking ahead to the next transfer window and looking at his responsibility for it,” the former France international added.
