Police accuse soldiers of killing 3 officers and releasing a kidnap suspect in Taraba

The Nigeria Police Force have accused soldiers of killing three of their personnel while freeing a kidnap suspect in Taraba state.

According to a statement released by Frank Mba, the spokesperson of the force, he said police officers from the Intelligence Response Team IRT, were in Taraba to effect the arrest of one Hamisu, an alhaji “indicted in a series of high-profile kidnap incidents in the state. Hamisu who is a “notorious” kidnap kingpin has been on the Police wanted list for his complicity in several high-profile kidnap cases including the recent abduction of an Oil-Mogul in Taraba State wherein a ransom of about One Hundred Million Naira (N100,000,000) was paid.

Mba says the police officers had arrested Hamisu but was set free by some soldiers who attacked the police officers.

Quote:''The soldiers thereafter released the handcuffed suspect, Alhaji Hamisu, who is now on the run. The Police Operatives, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reportedly came under sudden attack and serious shooting by soldiers of the Nigerian Army, along Ibi – Jalingo Road, Taraba State.
The Operatives, who were taking the arrested suspect, Alhaji Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at severally by the soldiers despite sufficient proof that they are Police personnel on legitimate duty.
Three Policemen (comprising one Inspector and two Sergeants) and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in the attack while others sustained serious gunshot wounds.” Mba said

Mba said the police have commenced full investigation into the “bizarre and unfortunate incident.”

The Nigerian Army is yet to react to this allegation.

Update: Nigerian Army says the three policemen shot dead by soldiers were mistaken for kidnappers

On Wednesday, August 7th, the Nigeria Police Force accused soldiers of killing three of their personnel while freeing a kidnap suspect in Taraba state. (Read HERE)

The Nigerian army has now admitted that its men killed three police operatives and a civilian in Taraba, but said the men were mistaken for kidnappers.

According to army spokesman, Colonel Sagir Musa, troops of the 93 Battalion in Takum, ‘exchanged’ fire with the policemen after they failed to stop at three checkpoints. He said the soldiers were responding to a distress call that someone had been kidnapped. It turned out, he said, that the people attacked were members of the IG Intelligence Response Team from the Police Headquarters Abuja.

According to his statement, a joint investigation committee headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Force Criminal Investigations Department, DIG Mike Ogbizi has now been been tasked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing of the police operatives.

Quote:“The attention of the Army Headquarters has been drawn to the Press Release by DCP Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer, on the unfortunate incident that occurred on the 6th of August 2019 in which troops of 93 Battalion Nigerian Army Takum pursued and exchanged fire with some suspected Kidnappers who indeed turned out to be an Intelligence Response Team from the Police Force Headquarters Abuja on a covert assignment from Abuja resulting in the death and injury of some members of the Team.
“On the 6th of August 2019, the said Nigerian Army troops, while responding to a distressed call to rescue a kidnapped victim exchanged fire with the suspected kidnappers along Ibi-Wukari Road in Taraba State.
“The suspected kidnappers numbering about ten (10) and driving in a white bus with Reg No LAGOS MUS 564 EU refused to stop when they were halted by troops at three consecutive check points.
“The flagrant refusal of the suspected kidnappers to stop at the three checkpoints prompted a hot pursuit of the fleeing suspects by the troops.
“It was in this process that the suspected kidnappers who were obviously armed opened fire at the troops sporadically thus prompting them to return fire.
“In the resultant fire fight, four (4) suspects were shot and died on the spot while four (4) others sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds and 2 others reportedly missing.
“It was only after this avoidable outcome that one of the wounded suspects disclosed the fact that they were indeed Policemen dispatched from Nigerian Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja for a covert assignment.
“However, following inquiries from a Police Station officer who was asked by the commander of the Army troops whether he was aware of any Nigerian Police team being dispatched to operate in the LGA, the Divisional Police Officer of Ibi Police Division responded that he was not informed about any operation by the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters thus lending credence to the distressed call from members of the community that the suspects who turned out to be Policemen on a covert mission were rather suspected kidnappers.
“This incident is indeed quite unfortunate and could have been avoided through proper coordination and liaison as the Nigerian Police Force are partners in the fight against crimes such as kidnapping amongst myriads of other internal security threats confronting our nation of which the Nigerian Police is the lead Agency.
“In order to avert future occurrences of this nature, the Army Headquarters and the Force Headquarters of the Nigerian Police have agreed to constitute a Joint investigation Panel to be headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, DIG Mike Ogbizi, to jointly investigate and report on the true circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
“Therefore, until the Joint Investigation Panel concludes and submits its report, it will be premature to officially conclude and speak on the real circumstances that caused this unfortunate but very avoidable unfortunate incident.”

Killing Of Policemen: Police Slams Army. Asks, "Where Is Arrested Kidnapper?"

The Nigerian Police Force has replied the statement by the Nigerian Army Headquarters. It's reply came via the following statement by the Police Force Headquarters.

Quote:SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT – WHERE IS THE “RESCUED” NOTORIOUS KIDNAPPER, ALHAJI HAMISU BALA WADUME?

The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to the Press Release by the @HQNigerianArmy dated 07 August, 2019, seeking to justify the unprovoked and unwarranted

murder of three (3) Police officers and one (1) Civilian, and serious injury to other operatives, who were on legitimate criminal investigation activities to Taraba State, to arrest one Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume indicted in a series of high-profile kidnap incidents in the State.

In the best tradition of Esprit de Corps, Inter-Agency Harmony and National Interest, the Nigeria Police Force would naturally have kept quiet, but it has become imperative to set the record straight by addressing the obvious distortion of facts inherent in the Press Release by @HQNigerianArmy. The most important question arising from the Nigerian Army Press Release is: Where is Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume? Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume is a millionaire kidnapper arrested by the Police

but paradoxically treated as a ‘‘kidnap victim’’ by the Soldiers and subsequently ‘rescued’ by them. Where is he? Where is the rescued kidnapper?

Secondly, the Press Release was silent on the source of the alleged distress report or identity of the complainant, on the strength of whose report, the Army claimed had informed their decision to engage in the purported chase and rescue operation.

Needless to state that in the true spirit of transparency and accountability, the Nigerian Army ought to have arrested the purported distress caller - if any -

for obviously and deliberately furnishing them with false and misleading information. Besides, such arrest should in fact be made public!

Thirdly, it is not true that the Policemen failed to identify themselves as alleged in the Press Release. The video on the incident, now viral, wherein the voice of one of the soldiers was heard loudly proclaiming that the Policemen were

from the Force Headquarters, Abuja speaks volume. Besides, the presence of the IRT personnel was well known to the Taraba Police Command as the Operatives officially and properly documented not only at the State Command Headquarters but also at the Wukari Area Command and

the Ibi Divisional Headquarters. As a matter of fact, some of the Detectives from the Taraba State Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were part of the operation.

The Force also considers it insensitive, disrespectful and unpatriotic for the Press Release by the Army to continue to describe Policemen on lawful National Assignment as ‘suspected kidnappers’ long after it had become crystal clear to the Army

that these are Law Enforcement Officers who unfortunately were gruesomely murdered in the line of duty by Nigerian soldiers attached to 93 Battalion, Takum.

In the final analysis, we leave the Nigerian Army authorities to provide Nigerians with answers on the following questions emanating from their Press Release: •Where is the notorious kidnapper, Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume ‘rescued’ by the soldiers?

•How and why was Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume released by the soldiers?

•How could a kidnap suspect properly restrained with handcuffs by the Police escape from the hands of his military rescuers?

•If Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume is a ‘‘victim of kidnap’’ as claimed, and properly rescued by soldiers, why was he not taken to the Army Base for documentation purposes and debriefing in line with the Standard Operating Procedure in the Nigerian Army?

•Why were the Police Operatives shot at close range even after they had identified themselves as Police Officers on legitimate duty as evident in the video now in circulation?

Taraba killings: Your press statement is insensitive, disrespectful and unpatriotic- Nigerian Police knocks Army

The Nigerian Police Force has described as insensitive, unpatriotic and disrespectful, the press statement from the Nigerian Army, explaining the circumstances that led to the killing of three police officers who were in Taraba state to effect the arrest of a notorious kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu Wadume.

Frank Mba, the spokeperson of the police force, in a statement released on Thursday night, August 8, knocked the Army for attempting to justify the unprovoked killing of the police officers by men of the Nigerian Army.

Recall that the Nigerian Army in a statement released, said the military officers mistook the police officers as kidnappers hence they were killed during a cross fire. According to the Army, its officers received a distress call that some armed men were attempting to abduct Hamisu. The Army says in response to the distress call, its men stormed the area and fired gunshots at the ''suspected kidnappers.''

Reacting to the Army's claim, the Police challenged the Nigerian Army on the whereabout of Hamisu who they claim to be the victim of kidnapping. The Police also wondered why the Army officers shot their police counterparts at close range despite the many attempts made at identifing themselves as security agents.

See the graphic photos of the Nigeria Police Officers killed in Taraba by soldiers who allegedly freed wanted millionaire kidnapper. Watch the graphic video after

The video shows how the dead police officers were being dragged on the tarred road while soldiers were there.

Meanwhile, the police have asked the Nigerian Army to explain the whereabouts of the Taraba kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Wadume, allegedly set free by soldiers who reportedly attacked a police team conveying the suspect to Taraba State Police Command headquarters in Jalingo, on Tuesday.

The force also demanded explanations on why the suspect was released, insisting that he could not have escaped with handcuffs from his “military rescuers.”

Video Shows Aftermath Of Shot Cops (Viewers Discretion Strongly Advised)

A video now circulating on the internet showed the aftermath of the shooting which led to the death of the cops. A white Hiace bus can be seen in the bush, flipped on its side, besides what appears to be a road. In the four minutes 40 seconds clip, a crowd of irate youth can be seen at the scene with some soldiers in their midst.

Some of them could be heard describing the policemen as criminals. Some threatened to finish off the wounded policemen still alive in the video, describing them as criminals, whilst insulting them.

Later a soldier is seen in a wide-angle shot, apparently supervising the evacuation of what appeared to be the lifeless bodies of the cops into a military pickup van. At the end of the video, someone among the onlookers said the policemen had shown their ID card, noting that they were from the IGP team in Abuja.

Senior military officer allegedly benefiting from Taraba kidnapper's largesse, allegedly ordered hit on policemen killed by soldiers

A senior military officer allegedly benefitting from Taraba kidnapper Hamisu Wadume's largesse, has been accused of ordering the hit on the policemen killed by soldiers.

Recall that the Nigerian Police and Army engaged in a trade of blames last week over the whereabouts of  the Taraba kidnap kingpin and murder of the policemen transporting him for interrogation after his arrest.

New Telegraph reported that prior to his arrest,, Wadume was generous to soldiers in Ibi and even paid a N1.5 million ransom when a military officer was kidnapped few months ago. The newspaper reported that the killed policemen met the soldiers at the three checkpoints while on their way to arrest the kidnap kingpin, introduced themselves and also revealed what they came for.

Quote:“They even chatted, joked and exchanged pleasantries,” one of the sources reportedly said.
“The arrest was made within 20 minutes and while they were returning, soldiers at the first and second checkpoints asked them if they were already through. The soldiers and operatives know one another, but the phone call from a top military personnel changed everything.”

The policemen lost control of the vehicle which somersaulted upon being shot at by the soldiers.

Quote:The source said: “When the operatives got to Ibi town, they booked their arrival at the police station and proceeded with assistance from a policeman attached to them in the state headquarters, Jalingo, to trace and arrest Alhaji Hamisu Wadume, who is wanted because he is linked to several kidnappings in Taraba State, including a recent kidnapping in which N100 million was collected as ransom.
“After arresting Wadume, the operatives were heading to police headquarters at Jalingo, when gang members of Wadume, who are close to an army captain serving in Ibi town, called the army and told him that his friend had been kidnapped. Without any verification or inquiries, the army captain ordered his men along the highway to ambush the policemen.”

Though Nigerian army's spokesperson Sagir Musa did not react to the allegation, however it should be recalled that a seven-man panel was set up by the Defence headquarters to probe the killings following President’s Muhammadu Buhari’s directive.

Photos: Bodies of 3 policemen killed in Taraba by soldiers arrive Abuja

The bodies of the three policemen killed by soldiers during an operation in Taraba state last Tuesday Augyst 6th, arrived at the morgue of Garki General Hospital in Abuja in the early hours of today Sunday August 11th.
An ambulance from Jalingo, the Taraba state capital, conveyed the caskets containing the bodies of the slain cops namely Inspector Mark Edaile, Sgt. Usman Danzumi and Sgt Dahiru Musa.

Recall that the slain police officers were in the state to effect the arrest of a notorious kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu. The suspect had been arrested and was been taken to the state police command when some soldiers intercepted the police, engaged them in a serious gun battle and in the process, the suspect escaped.

The police and the Nigerian Army have been engaged in a war of words. While the Army headqaurters claim its officers mistook the police officers for kidnappers, the Police say the defence by the Army is disrespectful and unpatriotic as the police men shouted they were security officers but were still killed at close range

A panel of inquiry has since been set up by the agencies to unravel the mystery behind the attack.

The police has however not announced a date of the burial for the slain officers.

Police Killing: DHQ Orders Taraba Battalion To Produce Wadume

• Killer soldiers moved to Abuja , Army grills commander

Quote:John Ameh , Adelani Adepegba, Success Nwogu, Olaleye Aluko and Justin Tyopuusu

The Defence Headquarters has ordered the 93 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in Takum , Taraba State , to produce the fleeing kidnap kingpin , Alhaji Hamisu Wadume, as evidence that its soldiers are not culpable in his escape after three policemen and a civilian were killed at a checkpoint in Ibi , last Tuesday .

A top military source at the DHQ confided in one of our correspondents on Monday that the battalion had been issued a directive to produce the runaway kidnapper.

The top military source said, “ The panel may not commence serious activities until after the Eid - el Kabir break . The Army had directed the battalion in Takum to produce the runaway kidnapper as evidence that its soldiers are not culpable .

“ The military will not hesitate to dismiss and court -martial any soldier found to be involved in shady business than allow the reputation of the Army to be toyed with .”

Also, the Nigerian Army headquarters confirmed that the captain who ordered the killing of the policemen and the civilians was being cross -examined at the 93 Battalion of the Nigerian Army , in Taraba State.

Findings by one of our correspondents on Monday however showed that the DHQ panel had yet to visit Taraba State but the IGP investigative team had been in Taraba .

The acting Director , Defence Information , Col . Onyema Nwachukwu , had said the panel was in “ compliance with the directive issued by the President and Commander - in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the joint committee has commenced work immediately .”

The Intelligence Response Team of the police led by ASP Felix Adolije had come under attack from soldiers along the Ibi -Jalingo Road while taking a kidnap kingpin , Wadume, to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo .

Three officers – Inspector Mark Ediale , Sergeants Usman Danzumi, Dahiru Musa and a civilian – died as a result of gunshot injuries .

The Nigerian Army had claimed that the soldiers fired at the IRT team because they failed to stop at three checkpoints , but this was dismissed by the police which demanded the whereabouts of the kidnap suspect who was allegedly freed by the soldiers .

Soldiers who killed policemen moved to Abuja
However, the arrested soldiers involved in the shootings were being detained in Takum before they were moved to Abuja, according to the top police source on Monday night .

The police source added that some police officers from Ibi division and other civilians who arrived early at the scene of the incident were also moved to Abuja to furnish the seven - man joint investigation panel about what transpired during the incident .

President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered the Defence headquarters to set up the panel to probe into the tragedy.

The DHQ had on Friday named a seven -man joint investigation panel , headed by Rear Admiral Ibikunle Olaiya, which has officers drawn from the army , navy , air force, police , the Department of State Services and the Defence Intelligence Agency .

The top police officer based in Taraba State but was attached to the IGP investigative team told one of our correspondents that the Army Captain from 93 Ada Barracks Takum who ordered the killings was called for questioning during the visit of the team .

He said, “ The soldiers who killed the three police officers and the two civilians have been moved to Abuja . I can ’t tell how many are they , but they were moved alongside some police officers attached to Ibi division and some early callers at the scene who have useful information regarding the incident .

“ From the video which we perused during the visit to Ibi , which I believe you also saw on the social media , one of the police officers was trying to identify himself with his ID card that they were police officers, yet they went ahead and shot at him.

“ It ’s really unfortunate , we have to calm our boys or else we would have had another incident this time police shooting soldiers while we were in Ibi . Five of those killed have been taken to Abuja too for autopsy, ” he said .

He , however, could not confirm whether the captain was also taken to Abuja .

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP . David Misal, who declined comments on the issue , however, said five of those killed have been moved to Abuja .

“ All the information you need now is with the Force PRO in Abuja , so there is little I can tell you , ” he said .

However, a senior police officer in the Force headquarters in Abuja confirmed to one of our correspondents that some suspects including soldiers arrested in Taraba State had been moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Department , Abuja .

The source, however , could not provide the number of the suspects .
As of the time of filing this report it was gathered that two military checkpoints along the Ibi -Wukari Road had been dismantled .

It was also gathered that the Police intelligence team who are trailing the fleeing kidnap kingpin have traced his location to Lafia , Nasarawa State , where he allegedly withdrew money from an ATM .

Buratai orders travelling soldiers to dress in mufti

Following the killing of the three police officers, the Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen . Tukur Buratai , has directed troops on internal security duties to be cautious in their dealings with members of the police force .

Buratai also admonished travelling military personnel to do so in mufti in order to avoid confrontations with policemen .

The COAS in a letter dated August 9 and copied to all Army formations nationwide accused the police of making inflammatory comments in the social media which he said was capable of inciting the rank and file of the Nigeria Police to “ exhibit aggressive tendencies against the NA personnel . ”

The letter with reference number AHQDAIOPS/ G 3 / 240 / 232 written on behalf of the COAS by Brig . Gen . F . Omoigui , was titled , ‘Need for troops to be circumspect in dealing with members of the Nigeria Police . ’

It read in part , “ Accordingly , all troops on IS ( Internal Security ) duty as well as personnel travelling in and out of uniform are to be circumspect in their conduct to avoid escalation.

“ Consequently , formations and unit commanders are to educate troops to be cautious in their dealings with members of the NP in view of this development . Troops travelling on pass are to endeavour to do so in mufti. ”

PDP govs seek justice for killed policemen , others

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party Governors ’ Forum on Monday urged President Buhari to ensure that the soldiers that killed three police officers and a civilian were punished according to the law .

The PDP governors in a statement signed by their chairman , Seriake Dickson , who is also the Bayelsa State Governor , condemned the killing of the police officers .

Dickson also condemned the killing of a commercial motorcyclist in Abia State , Mr Chimaobi Nwogu , allegedly by another soldier identified as Cpl . Ajayi Johnson .

He said, “ We wish to reiterate that the killings are unnecessary . It is very pathetic that the Nigerian Army would abandon its constitutional role of defending the borders of the country from external aggression to descend into such lowly criminality . It is sad that a security personnel , who is paid and maintained with taxpayers ’ money , could turn around to kill the person he is being paid to protect .

“ We implore the Federal Government to adequately compensate the families of victims and ensure justice is served on the culprits . ”

Buhari awaits panel report , not indifferent to killings . – Presidency

However, the Presidency said on Monday that President Buhari would take appropriate actions over the killing of three police officers and a civilian by soldiers , contrary to criticisms suggesting that he was indifferent .

The President came under attacks by Twitter users on Monday , who accused him of not doing enough to get to the root of the matter.

The attacks forced the Senior Special Assistant to Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu , to react , saying that Buhari was only waiting for the outcome of the investigation being conducted by the Defence Headquarters .
In the tweets , one Twitter user , @PeterIjakpa , wrote , “ The President is incompetent in all ramifications .”

Another tweet by @ KentChidera, noted, “ So there is no time duration for the investigation ? This kind inquiry may last till 2023 .”

Replying via his handle , @GarShehu , the President ’s media aide wrote , “ In response to press questions , I will confirm that a committee was set up during the National Security Council meeting to investigate the killing of three policemen and a civilian by soldiers in Taraba State. ”

In another tweet , he wrote , “ Contrary to those mischievous insinuations , President Buhari had ordered the Chief of Defence Staff to set up an investigation committee with representatives from all the security organisations in the country , including the police force. ”

A third tweet denied that Buhari was indifferent , “ The President is not indifferent to the unfortunate incident , and would take a decisive action as soon as the report of the panel is submitted to him. ”

Quote:Taraba Police Killings: Army Captain Had 191 Phone Chats With Wanted Kidnapper

The Nigerian Army Captain who allegedly ordered soldiers on security check-point along the Ibi-Jalingo Expressway in Taraba State, to attack and kill police operatives attached to the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT, has been identified.

Vanguard gathered, yesterday, that police investigation carried out so far has revealed that telephone conversations between the kidnap kingpin, Wadume and the Captain , were about 191 within the space of one month between July 9, 2019 and August 6, 2019. The source explained that the police authorities believed that the army captain might have been providing cover for the kidnapper, who is said to have received hundreds of millions as ransom from his victims.

Army Captain Taraba
Vanguard gathered that the Army Captain , who is currently undergoing interrogation at the Defence Headquarters Abuja, was arrested alongside five other Army personnel, who were alleged to have taken part in the horrific killing of the three policemen and their two civilian agents in an operation to arrest a notorious kidnapper, Alhaji Hamisu Balla, alias Wudume, in Ibi area of Taraba State.

Vanguard learned yesterday that the arrested solders confessed that they received orders to attack the policemen from the captain, whom they said informed them that Wadume had been kidnapped and was being transported in a silver-coloured Toyota Hiace Bus.

A source at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, told Vanguard that the soldiers claimed that they acted squarely on the orders of the captain, being their superior officer, but Police sources at Force Headquarters Abuja, disclosed that the police authorities have established strong links between the army captain and the notorious kidnapper, alleging that the army captain was on the kidnapper’s payroll.

The source added further that its investigations have also revealed that the army captain, who was not present in Ibi Town at the time the IRT operatives arrested Wadume, might have ordered his men to attack and kill the IRT operatives as well as rescue his friend, the kidnapper.

Petition against Wadume received

Meanwhile, Vanguard also gathered, yesterday, that the IRT’s manhunt to arrest and bring down Wadume’s kidnapping empire began in March 2019, when it received a petition from one Sheriff Umar of Kirikinua South Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

It was gathered further that the petitioner reported that his cousin, Usman Mayo was kidnapped on the 15th of February, 2019 at Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State and his kidnapper demanded the sum of N200 million as ransom for his release.

The source explained that the family of the kidnapped victim negotiated and paid the sum of N85 million first, on March 11, 2019, but the abductee was not released. He said they paid an additional N15 million, on March 16, 2019, making a total sum paid to the kidnappers N100 million and the kidnappers refused to release their victim insisting that that the family must pay the N200million they demanded.

The source explained that the family reported to the police and the IRT was drafted to investigate and track down the suspects behind the kidnapping and rescue the victim. It was learned that while investigations into the matter commenced, members of the kidnapped victim’s family paid an additional N20m to the kidnappers and the victim was released, but the police discovered during investigations that Wadume had strong links to the kidnappers, who got N120 million as ransom from their victim.

I sold 6 AK-47 rifles to Wadume — Ajomo

The police source, further disclosed that it investigations also revealed that Wadume, had bought several AK-47 rifles from a notorious trans-border arms dealer, Ojomo Adebowale Gbenga, who was arrested in May 2019, by operatives of the IRT for supplying heavy arms and ammunition to kidnappers and armed robbers.

45-year-old Ojomo, said to be a major arms dealer in the South-Western part of the country, made startling revelations about the fleeing Wadume during an interview.

Ojomo, who was earlier in the year paraded by police authorities over his criminal activities and later detained in Lagos, told Vanguard that he met Alhaji Wadume four years ago in Benue State and had been selling arms to him under the guise of using them to fight terrorist Fulanis.

Speaking with Vanguard, Ojomo said that he got to know Wadume through his business partner, Moses in Benue State, and he told him that he needed rifles to fight herdsmen who were killing farmers in his community. The gun runner explained that he got all the rifles, which he sold to Wadume and his friends from Burkina Faso, Mali and Libya and he said he sold the arms to them because they told him that they were having community clashes.

He further disclosed: “I started selling fire arms since 1993 after my secondary school. I worked with a company that deals on licensed arms in 1993 and I left in 1996 and went to school but, I linked up with arms dealers in Ibadan, which is the headquarters of arms dealing in the south western part of the country. I started selling automatic firearms which is prohibited, then one of my friends who is now late, Moses led me to the north. He took me to Benue State and I sold arms to several people, including Alhaji Hamisu (Wadume). He came to me through Moses’ contacts and they identified him as a don. You know arms dealing is a cartel business. I knew very little about him and I sold eight rifles to him in 2015 and in January 2019, he called again and told me that he needed 10 rifles, but I had only six and because he was in hurry, I sold them to him at N800,000 each, and the bullets for N350,000 per can. But after my arrest, I gave information about him to the police. It was while in detention I heard he has been arrested.

Police inspector arrested, recants

Also, a Police Inspector who was accused of informing the Army that operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team that visited Ibi community in Taraba state, last week to effect the arrest of the suspected kidnap kingpin did not report to Police authorities, has been arrested.

Preliminary investigation, as reliably gathered, revealed that the policeman was cajoled to say so in order to cement evidences by troops of the 93 Battalion that the operatives were not only kidnappers but were there on an illegal duty.

It was also learned that one of the villagers who allegedly collected the firearms from the dead policemen revealed during interrogation that the weapons belonging to the slain police officers were collected from him by some soldiers.

Vanguard learned that the Police inspector attached to Ibi Police Station confirmed that the operatives visited the station to inform the senior officer there that they had concluded their operations and were leaving with the arrested suspect.

Unconfirmed reports said the policeman was given an undisclosed amount of money to maintain his stand that he told the troops that the policemen did not report at the station.

However, sources said the Inspector denied during interrogation at Force Headquarters, Abuja, that he did not collect any money from the Army.

It was further learned that about three villagers collected the firearms that were flung in different places into the bush after the police team was shot, when their vehicle somersaulted. One of them was said to have taken the arms to his home from where it was collected by the soldiers.

A villager who spoke on the condition of anonymity revealed that the suspected kidnap kingpin who is still on the run, is a popular person in Ibi community.

He was said to have contested for the House of Assembly, Ibi constituency in the last election, under the Young Democratic Party, but lost.

The 35-year-old man, said to be a petty trader, was revered in the community, due to his philanthropic nature.

He was said to have bought motorcycles for some youths, some of who thronged the scene where the operatives were killed, jubilating that their benefactor’s enemies had been overpowered.

At the moment, villagers in Ibi community are said to be keeping sealed lips on what transpired during the arrest of the suspected kidnapper, last week, for fear of being attacked by loyalists to the suspect.

Some of those close to the kidnap suspects have taken to their heels, apparently to avoid being arrested over his whereabouts.

Widow to address press today

Meanwhile, widow of the slain Inspector Mark Ediale, who is yet to come to terms with the rude shock of her husband’s demise, has left Lagos for the Force headquarters, Abuja, where she was received by senior police officers who condoled her and other widows over the tragic incident.

But her late husband’s family, it was reliably gathered, will be briefing journalists in Abuja today, where some salient questions would be posed to killers of their son.

The family, Vanguard learned, is requesting an explanation on how Inspector Ediale died, when he was seen alive in a video clip that went viral.

Wanted Taraba Kidnapper Wadume allegedly exchanged 200 calls with a Senior Police officer before 3 policemen that arrested him were killed

The criminal collaboration between wanted Taraba kidnapper Hamisu Bala a.k.a Wadume and some senior police officers at the Ibi Police Division, has been uncovered in the course of investigation into the death of 3 police reportedly killed by soldiers after his arrest.

LIB reported earlier that 3 officers – Inspector Mark Ediale, Sergeants Usman Danzumi, Dahiru Musa – and an IRT informant, Olajide Owolabi died as a result of gunshot injuries that came off an attack by soldiers believed to be allegedly loyal to Wadume who has been linked to several kidnappings.

According to Punch, A Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) arrested after his link to the kidnapper was established, reportedly had over 200 phone calls with Wadume. The DCO was nabbed after Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Michael Ogbizi visited the scene of the incident and also interacted with some personnel at Ibi Divisional Police station.

It was found that an incident book where entries were made was torn off by the DCO, to give an impression of the dead IRT team members not following laid down procedures.

Quote:“On discovering that the documentation of the IRT team was not reflected in the incident book, the DIG promptly ordered the arrest of the DCO and the Station Officer who were taken to the Force Criminal Investigation Department cell in Abuja.
“A forensic analysis of the call logs of the DCO showed that he had made over 200 calls to Wadume over a few days. The startling revelations made the police leadership to wake up to the fact that the soldiers alone were not culpable or responsible for the killing of the IRT team.
“There seems to be a deeply entrenched criminal network and deep operational collaboration between the kidnap gangs in the area, the police at Ibi Division and some soldiers of the 93 Battalion, Takum, which would require a very comprehensive and painstaking investigation to unearth and dismantle" a police source said to punch.

The new findings in the investigation uncovered the network of security operatives on the payroll of the fleeing Taraba kidnapper and they include senior police officers and the army captain who allegedly issued the order for the attack on the IRT personnel which led to the rescue and escape of Wadume. Punch reported that police investigators are now working to establish the financial connections between Wadume, the soldiers and the policemen involved in the killings.

It was however alleged that the Nigerian Police Force refused to release more information after its senior officers got linked to the sad incident that led to the death of 3 IRT operatives.
