Tobi Amusan breaks 20-year record to retain title




 
Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan won gold on Wednesday August 28, after she broke Glory Alozie’s 20-year-old Africa Games record at the 12th Africa Games Women’s 100m final.
 
The 22-year-old retained her title by surpassing Glory Alozie’s record of 12.74s in the 1999 edition of the Games which was held in Johannesburg, and setting a new one of 12.68s (-0.6) at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Morocco. 
 

“I am happy I won the race which is the most important thing, but it was a kind of rough race for me,” Tobi said after the race.

17-year-old Jamaican sprinter Briana Williams fails drugs test




 
Briana Williams, a 17-year-old Jamaican sprint sensation has tested positive for a banned substance.
 
The double under-20 world champion was found to have the diuretic Hydrochlorothiazide in her system during competition.
 
Williams reportedly tested positive for the substance at June's Jamaican championships, where she clocked 10.94secs.
 
Her coach, Ato Boldon has blamed 'contaminated tablets' for the failed drug test. It is understood that Williams's defence rests on her taking medication for a cold.
 
Williams's representative Dr Emir Crowne said: 'Our primary position will be that Ms Williams bears no fault in the circumstances and there should be no sanctions levied against her. That will be our primary position. 
 
'It will be an uphill battle, but this is one of the truly genuine times when there was nothing more that the athlete could do in the circumstances.' 
 
Briana Williams has already qualified for the 100m at the World Championships in Doha next month and has spoken of her aim of winning Olympic gold as early as Tokyo 2020.

Chelsea’s Bakayoko agrees terms with new club
 


Chelsea midfielder, Tiemoue Bakayoko, is set to leave the club before the European transfer window shuts down on September 2 after agreeing on personal terms with Monaco.
According to Express UK, Bakayoko will join the Ligue 1 side on a season-long loan deal that can be made permanent for £32million next summer.

DAILY POST had reported that Bakayoko is set to leave Chelsea for a return to Monaco, his former club.
Monaco want to take their former player back on loan after the 25-year-old failed to meet the expectations at Stamford Bridge.
Bakayoko spent last season on loan with Italian giants, AC Milan.

The Frenchman has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Blues hierarchy.
He joined Chelsea from Monaco for £40million in July 2017.

Juventus is now third most-followed football club on Instagram after seeing a rise of 20 million followers following the arrival of former Real Madrid striker, Cristiano Ronaldo.
 
The Portuguese superstar joined the Italian club in 2018 when they were just on 10 million, but now they have witnessed a rapid increase including surpassing his former club, Manchester United. 
 
Juventus now has 31.1m followers on Instagram, while Manchester United boasts of 31m followers.

Team Nigeria wins seven gold medals on glorious day at the on-going African Games


 


Yesterday was a golden day for Team Nigeria at the on-going African Games in Morocco. After a slow start in the games, which has seen Egypt establish a huge lead, Team Nigeria flew to seven gold medals yesterday with football, wrestling and athletics leading the way. The Women national U-20 team, Falconets set the ball rolling with a hard-fought penalty shoot-out defeat of Cameroun in the female football event before the wrestling team set Nigeria’s camp ablaze with five gold medals out of the six finals they fought in. And then, Commonwealth champion, Ese Brume leapt to her first African Games title in the women long jump event.

The keenly contested women football final game between two teams that had battled to a 1-1 draw in a group phase match eight days earlier ended 0-0 after regulation and extra time at the Stade Boubker Aamar outside Rabat. Penalty shoot-out followed and the Nigeria U20 girls, one of only four teams to have featured in every edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup since the competition started 17 years ago, triumphed.
 
The victory was the first gold for the Falconets at the African Games in 12 years, having not qualified for the 10th edition in Mozambique in 2011 and finishing outside the medals’ range in Brazzaville four years ago.
Today their male counterparts, Flying Eagles will attempt to win their first gold medal since the country last won it in 1973.
 
The seven-time African champions edged a memorable encounter with Mali in the semi-finals, which went into extra time, penalty shoot-out and sudden death session before they could be separated.
 
Burkina Faso’s U20 side also had to endure the gruel of a penalty shoot-out to oust Senegal in the second semi-final, and today’s battle for gold will be no contest for weak bones.

On the mat, Nigeria dominated women wrestling held in El Jadida, Morocco, with reigning African Games gold medalists, Blessing Oborududu (68kg), Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg), Mercy Genesis (50kg) and Aminat Adeniyi (62kg) retaining their titles. African Champion, Blessing Onyebuchi (76kg) came good, while 2018 African champion Bose Samuel (53kg) settled for silver after losing to Cameroun’s Essombe Joseph 2-4 in the final.
 
The five gold-medalists did not concede a point in their respective final bouts.
 
Earlier on Wednesday, Team Nigeria’s Tochukwu Okeke (87kg) claimed bronze in the Greco-Roman event.
 
Action will be wrapped up in wrestling today in the men’s Freestyle events, with the likes of Amas Daniel (65kg), Emmanuel Ogbonna (74kg), Soso Tamarau, Sinivie Boltic, Ebikewenimo Welson (57kg) and Melvin Bibo expected to rack in more medals for the country.
 
In the long jump, Ese Brume leapt to her first All Africa Games gold at the Moulay Abdellah Sports stadium in Rabat as Nigeria picked two more gold medals on day four of track and field events.
Brume, who only last month leapt to a new 7.05m personal best to become the third Nigerian nay African woman to hit the magical 7 metres in the event was the hot favourite to win and she didn’t disappoint as she led with her very first jump of 6.68m, which could have given her the gold medal.

The Nigerian however added one more centimetre with her final jump to win the title with 6.69m, the second-longest winning margin after Janice Joseph of South Africa’s 6.79m leap to win in 2007 in Algiers. 

In the women’s discus throw, Chioma Onyekwere won the gold with her 59.91m throw.

Onyekwere came to the Games as African leader in the event following the 60.75m personal best she threw in June this year in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, U.S.

The other two Nigerians in the event, Anumba Ashley Ifeoma (53.45m) and Princess Kara (49.85m) came fourth and fifth respectively.

Hazard wins Europa League Player of the Season [See top ten] 





Real Madrid forward, Eden Hazard, has won the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League Player of the Season.
The Belgium international finished top ahead of former Chelsea teammate, Olivier Giroud and Real Madrid teammate, Luka Jović.

Hazard won the third edition of the award, which was announced during the UEFA Europa League group stage draw in Monaco on Friday.
The 28-year-old was Man of the Match as Chelsea beat Arsenal 4-1 in May’s final in Baku.

Transfer: Solskjaer reacts as Man Utd sell Smalling to Roma 





Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has described Chris Smalling’s move from Old Trafford to AS Roma as ‘a new experience and an adventure’.
DAILY POST reports that Smalling has agreed a season-long loan deal to join the Serie A side.

But Solskjaer now believes that Smalling, who is Man United’s longest-serving player, will enjoy his time at Roma.
“Chris is on his way over [to Italy]. He’s flying over to Rome this morning to do a medical and all the final details,” Solskjaer told MUTV on Friday ahead of Man United’s Premier League clash against Southampton.
“At the moment we’ve got six centre-backs and it’s just something that popped up towards the end [of the European transfer window] in the last couple of days. Chris fancied the chance to go over there; it’s a new experience, new adventure.

“He’ll come back better for it because it’s a big club, it’s a good league. There aren’t too many English players who have been playing in Italy so I think he’ll enjoy it.”
Smalling made 34 appearances and scored 1 goal for the Man United in all competitions last season.
The England international joined Man United in 2010 from Fulham in a £10million deal.

Robert Lewandowski: Bayern Munich striker signs new contract until 2023

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has signed a new four-year contract with the German champions that will keep him at the club until 2023.

The 31-year-old Poland captain has scored 197 goals in 246 games in all competitions for Bayern since joining from Borussia Dortmund five years ago.

He has netted all five of Bayern's Bundesliga goals so far this season.

"Bayern has become my sporting home. I am proud to be a part of this club," said Lewandowski.

Lewandowski is third on the club's list of all-time scorers behind Gerd Muller (398) and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (217).

He is also the Bundesliga's all-time best foreign scorer having hit 207 league goals for Bayern and Dortmund combined.

"Bayern are one of the three biggest clubs in the world and have a superb squad," Lewandowski added.

EPL: Lampard confirms three players will miss Chelsea game against Sheffield Utd 


Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has confirmed that N’Golo Kante, Toni Rudiger and Pedro will miss the Blues’ Premier League clash against Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
According to him, Kante and Pedro are not fit, while Rudiger will feature for Chelsea’s Under 23 squad tonight.

“N’Golo Kante is not fit. It’s a continuation of his ankle problem. He won’t be traveling with the French squad either,” Lampard told Chelsea’s official website on Friday.
“I had a conversation with Didier Deschamps and we both agreed it was the best thing for him, so let’s try and get him fit over the break.
“Of course it’s a setback, but my focus is on making sure Kante is okay. He’s had four years of constant football at an incredibly high level, energy level, output level. We certainly have to get it right.

“We have a strong squad with strong numbers in midfield. The midfield performance last week was very good. We have a strong squad and we have to show it.
“Pedro is not fit. Hopefully he should be fit the other side of the international break as well.
“Rudiger is going to play for the Under-23s tonight, hopefully for the final time in terms of getting proper match fitness. Then he is in serious contention to play after the break.”

Chelsea head to the game following 3-2 victory over Norwich City last weekend.

Legendary German goal Oliver Rolf Kahn named as next Bayern CEO





 
German champions, Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of former captain Oliver Kahn, returning as a board member next year and as CEO in 2022.  
 
Long-time president Uli Hoeness announced his retirement after almost half a century at the club as a player, general director and president on the same day the Bavarians appointed another successful former player to succeed current CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.  
 
Kahn, nicknamed ‘the Titan’ who won eight league titles between 1994 and 2008 with the Bavarians, signed a five-year contract after the board voted unanimously in favour of the move in Thursday’s meeting.

“It is a great honour to initially become a member of the board and then take over the chairman role at Bayern Munich,” the 50-year-old Kahn, a former Germany goalkeeper and captain, said in a statement.  “I am deeply linked with the club that has marked my life considerably.”

When Rummenigge’s contract expires on Dec. 31, 2021, Kahn will take over from him as chairman and CEO. Hoeness, a 1974 World Cup winner who became the club’s general manager in 1979 and then its president in 2009, said it was a difficult decision not to run for another term.  
 
“It was not a decision that was taken quickly,” Hoeness told a news conference. “My family and my wife reminded me that she would like to have more time with me. “I always wanted to leave with the club in a superb state. The figures last season (with a turnover of over 650 million euros ($724 million) in 2017/18) were the best in the history of Bayern. I also wanted that it is also well positioned on a personnel level.”  
 
Hoeness, whose reputation was severely tarnished when he was convicted and imprisoned for tax evasion in 2014, has proposed former Adidas chief Herbert Hainer as his successor at the helm Germany’s biggest and most successful club. He also said that Kahn was “the perfect solution looking into the future for the position of chairman.”  The former Germany keeper, who also won the Champions League with Bayern in 2001, had long been seen as a likely replacement for Rummenigge as the club look to install a new generation of senior officials.  
 
Kahn was also a 2002 World Cup finalist with Germany, losing to Brazil. An entrepreneur and popular advertising figure, Kahn most recently worked as a television commentator. Rummenigge had joined Bayern as a player in 1974, enjoying a hugely successful decade, and became the club’s vice-president from 1991 to 2002 before taking over his current role.

Neymar’s wish to return to Barcelona looks to have been granted, after one of his sponsors, put a photo of him on social media in the Catalan side’s new shirt.
According to Sportsmail, the post which was uploaded to Instagram by watchmaker Gaga Milano who boast Neymar as a brand ambassador, was deleted minutes after going live.

It appears to all but confirm an agreement has been reached for him to leave Paris Saint-Germain.
Neymar left Barcelona for £198million in 2017, but has grown unhappy in Paris in recent months and has made no secret of his desire to return to LaLiga.
While the move is seemingly close to completion, Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde, admits he will be glad to see the transfer window close on September 2.

Ahead of their September 10 international friendly against Ukraine, the Super Eagles will on September 6th depart Nigeria for the Ukrainian Capital Kyiv.

Sportinglife.ng however gathered that as at the time of filing this report the international passports of the boys were still with the Ukrainian Embassy in Abuja.
The tie between the Eagles and the Yellow and Blue is part of the shape up matches for the Gernot Rohr tutored side towards the next World Cup qualifiers on one hand and the 2021 Nations cup qualifiers on the other.
Qualifiers for the 2021 Nations cup in Cameroon begin in November.
The two countries are yet to meet at senior international level and soccer fans of both countries are already talking about and looking forward to the match.
Only recently Coach Rohr released a 23-man list for the friendly with only a few of the regular missing.

Chelsea boss, Frank Lampard, has revealed why his side played a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
A first half brace from Tammy Abraham, a second half strike from Callum Robinson and an own-goal from Kurt Zouma ensured both teams got a point.

But, Lampard has now said that the Blues played a draw against Sheffield United because they switched off in the game after leading 2-0 in the first half.
He also said that his players lacked concentration against the visitors during the encounter.
“It is not the defence, it is conceding as a team so the lack of concentration or mistakes for the goals are moments when you defend as a team, as much as you attack as a team,” Lampard was quoted by Chelsea’s official website as saying after the match.

“We conceded because we switch off in a game that should be comfortably seen out at 2-0 up. That is not to disrespect Sheffield United, 2-0 is not the end of the story.
“I was clear with the players at half-time that this can either be 3-0, and okay then this could be nice, or a potential 2-2 on our hands and the disappointing fact is the first goal as much as anything because that allowed it to happen. We only have ourselves to look at as a group, not individuals.
“And I could not care less that we have the youngest team in Chelsea Premier League history. It was a real plus last week, and the fact it was young today I don’t think relates at all.”

EPL: Solskjaer reveals why Man Utd drew 1-1 with Southampton, singles out one player

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has blamed their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday, on “careless finishing”.
Daniel James broke the deadlock with a superb effort in the first half, before Jannik Vestergaard headed in the equalizer for the hosts around the half hour mark.

United, however, failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage to grab a winner, after Kevin Danso was sent off for a second booking.
Solskjaer told BBC Sport: “We need some scrappy goals as well. We should have won today, we had the game where we wanted it, we were careless in our finishing and our last pass.
“We built pressure, we got round them, created good openings but the clinical edge wasn’t there. We should have won, again.

The Norwegian, however, singled out James for praise, after the Welsh winger scored his third goals for the Red Devils.
“Daniel James is fantastic, he has a great attitude, he wants to learn, he is hungry. He is at the start of his career but with his habits he will have a good one. We want to help him become the finished article.”

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has said that Sadio Mane’s angry reaction on the bench at Burnley, wasn’t down to the fact that he had just been substituted.
Mane was taken off for Divock Origi, shortly after failing to receive a pass from Mohamed Salah when the score was 3-0.

When he was taken off, the Senegal forward could be seen walking past Klopp and shouting at a member of Liverpool’s staff on the bench.
He was then comforted by fellow goalscorer Roberto Firmino, who had also just been replaced.
“Sadio Mane is an emotional guy, we are all individuals.

“Something went not like he wanted, it is not the substitution. We will clarify it in the dressing room,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

Neymar's Move To Barca Is Now Officially OFF As He Has Agreed To Stay At PSG







NEYMAR will stay at Paris Saint-Germain after the club failed to agree a deal with Barcelona, according to reports.

The Catalan giants were hopeful of completing a deal worth up to £236million before the deadline on September 2.

That move included £182m in cash plus Ivan Rakitic, Jean-Clair Todibo, as well as Ousmane Dembele on a season-long loan.

But the deal remained hugely complicated with speculation that Dembele had no desire to spend the year in Paris with the French giants.

And according to Sky Sports, PSG have pulled the plug on any move after Neymar agreed to "fulfil the remainder of his contract and commitments."

Last night PSG sporting director Leonardo hinted that a move had hit a snag because the terms "didn't suit" them.

He said: "Our position on a potential departure of Neymar is clear, everyone knows what we want.
"We got a first written offer on 27 August and we refused it, the conditions didn't suit us.

"There are three days until the end of the transfer window, and for the moment, there is no agreement.

Neymar will now jet to Miami tomorrow where he will meet up with his international team-mates ahead of Brazil's clashes against Colombia and Peru.

The 27-year-old has yet to feature for PSG this season having left him out while his future remained unresolved.

But with a Champions League clash against Real Madrid to look forward to on his return from international duty, boss Thomas Tuchel is ready to throw him back into the mix.
