FG opens radio station to reach herdsmen across the country

The Federal Government says it has acquired an Amplitude Modulation radio broadcast licence to reach herdsmen across various locations in the country as parts of measures to enhance nomadic education.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, stated this in Abuja during an interview with newsmen, adding that the establishment of the radio frequency was to end the perennial farmers-herders crises across the country.

The minister noted that the radio service would operate on frequency of 720KHz, and would air in Fulani language, as the government believes that the radio medium is one of the viable means to reach the herdsmen. He stated that plans were underway to secure funds for the procurement and installation of requisite transmission equipment for the successful take-off of the radio station.
Quote:Adamu said, “The radio service will serve as a vehicle for social mobilisation and education, in addition to interactive radio instruction methodology that will be adopted to reach the very hard-to-reach segment of our target population. Additionally, it will enhance our capacity to address crisis between herders and farmers with attendant consequences to loss of lives, destruction of productive assets, nomadic schools, facilities teaching and learning resources.”
The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Nomadic Education, Prof. Bashir Usman, said Hausa broadcasters have been contacted to develop programmes that would add impetus to the commission’s effort towards mass education of the target group.

Quote:Herdsmen: FG Opens Radio Station - Femi Fani-Kayode Kicks

A former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has kicked against the acquisition of radio station for armed herdsmen as a means to curtail killings in the country.

The Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said it acquired an Amplitude Modulation radio broadcast licence to reach herdsmen across various locations in the country as parts of measures to enhance nomadic education.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, stated this in Abuja during an interview with newsmen, adding that the establishment of the radio frequency was to end the perennial farmers-herders crises across the country.

Mr Adamu said the radio service would operate on frequency of 720KHz, and would air in Fulani language, as the government believes that the radio medium is one of the viable means to reach the herdsmen.

“The radio service will serve as a vehicle for social mobilisation and education, in addition to interactive radio instruction methodology that will be adopted to reach the very hard-to-reach segment of our target population,” the minister said.

“Additionally, it will enhance our capacity to address crisis between herders and farmers with attendant consequences to loss of lives, destruction of productive assets, nomadic schools, facilities teaching and learning resources,” Adamu added.

Kicking against the project, Mr Fani-Kayode queried why the same administration which declared the radio station of a proscribed group illegal will now establish a radio station for armed herdsmen believed to be the arrowheads of killings across the country.

“You say that @radiobiafralive is illegal yet you acquire a new radio station for the Fulani terrorists and herdsmen,” the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said in a tweet on Thursday.

What type of Federal Government is this?” he queried.

Radio Biafra is the radio station of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB). When he was sworn in as president, Mr Buhari tried all he could to bring down the radio station he helped popularise by arresting the leader of the group, Nnamdi Kanu.

Mr Kanu and his group are demanding the balkanization of the country, calling for the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic.

The IPOB leader who is currently outside the shores of the country, had his group proscribed two years ago after a violent clash between IPOB and the Nigerian Military.

As at press time, POLITICS TIMES gathered that the radio station whose location remains unknown is believed to airing from diaspora and has continued to propagate the demands of IPOB.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has berated the Federal Government for planning to set up a radio station to reach out and persuade Fulani herdsmen to stop killing farmers.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja, Pastor Bayo Oladeji, the Special Assistant to CAN President, Samson Ayokunle, described the plan as a confirmation of the allegation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo about the planned Fulanisation of the country by the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.
He said the government was pampering the Fulani herdsmen, whom he said, had been described as one of the deadliest terrorist group in the world by the Global Terrorism Index.

According to him, despite the wanton killings by the group in the North-Central, not a single person had been prosecuted by the government.
He said, “It was reported in the newspapers that the government planned to give the Miyetti Allah N100bn. The government denied it only for the Miyetti Allah to own up, saying it was approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan. Who is fooling who?

“Why didn’t they set up a radio station for farmers too? Where is the radio station for the bandits in Zamfara, or for the Niger Delta militants? No single person has been prosecuted for the killings in the North-Central. Is the allegation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that there is a planned Fulanisation of the country not playing out now?”

“Every adult in the North listens to the radio, so why can’t they reach the herdsmen on the existing radio stations? Why do they need to set up a different radio station for them? They should stop fooling us,” it added.

Recall that the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, had said the Federal Government had acquired an Amplitude Modulation broadcast radio licence for the herdsmen as part of efforts to end perennial farmers-herders’ clashes. https://dailypost.ng/2019/05/23/fg-acqui...-herdsmen/

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum have opposed the plan by the Federal Government [url=https://dailypost.ng/2019/05/23/fg-acquires-radio-license-reach-herdsmen/]to set up a radio station for herdsmen.

A statement on Thursday signed by Yinka Odumakin (South-West), Senator Bassey Henahaw (South-South), Dr. Isuwa Dogo (Middle-Belt) and Professor Chigozie Ogbu (South-East) said it received the news with rude shock.

It said the announcement came at a time the Federal Government had been acting as the information arm of Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen by dissing the correct interpretation of the groups activities by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an attempt to “Fulanise” Nigeria.

“We totally reject this insensitive decision of the government on the following fundamental grounds:
“It smacks of hypocrisy and deception for a government that has in the last four years denied responsibility on behalf of the Fulani herdsmen for crimes they even owned up to,to now tell us it wants to set up a radio for them to address the same issues.
“Section 55 of the 1999 Constitution recognises English,Yoruba ,Hausa and Igbo as Languages in which the official business of the National Assembly can be conducted .There was no mention of Fulani which is not a language most northerners even understand.

“Why it’s sudden promotion to a language the Federal Government will set up a radio to promote ?Will it also set up radio stations for the officially recognised languages and the over 250 languages spoken in different parts of Nigeria?

“We fear seriously that the proposed radio will become a weapon of spreading hate propaganda against other nationalities in Nigeria given the kid gloves treatment with which the Buhari administration has handled the killings of thousands of Nigerians in the last four years.

“We are guided the genocide-aiding role radio played in inciting ordinary citizens to take part in the massacre of Tutsis and moderate Hutus during the Rwandan Genocide. From 1993 to late 1994 ,RTLM was used by Hutu leaders to propagate an extremist Hutu message and anti-Tusti disinformation by identifying specific targets and areas where they could be found and encouraging progress of the genocide.

“In 1994, Rwanda Radio began to advance the same message by issuing directives on where to kill Tutsis and congratulating those who had already taken part.
“Using the instrumentality of the Federal Government to set up a radio for Fulani herdsmen will throw a knife at the tiniest of the threads still holding Nigeria together as all illusions of an inclusive country would be removed and the rest of the country would conclude we are now under Fulani Government of Nigeria.

“We therefore demand that the Federal Government should perish the thought of a Fulani radio sponsored by government if it cares in any form about the corporate existence of the country,” they said.
