Serie A: Juventus’ unbeaten run ends with Genoa defeat

Juventus paid the price for resting Cristiano Ronaldo, as their unbeaten start to the season suffered a shocking end at Genoa.

The Serie A champions lost 2-0 on Sunday.
Ronaldo was left out of the squad, following his hat-trick against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League in midweek.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, former Juve midfielder Stefano Sturaro struck in the 72nd minute to open scoring.
Goran Pandev added the second with nine minutes left.
Juventus could now see their lead at the top slashed to 15 points, should Napoli defeat Udinese later today.

Atletico Madrid forward, Antoine Griezmann, is beginning to regret his decision to turn down Barcelona in the summer, and is hoping he can secure a move to the Nou Camp at the end of the season, L’Equipe reports.

Griezmann was strongly linked with the La Liga champions, but chose to extend his contract with Atletico until 2023.
However, he now believes he made a mistake with Atletico exiting the Champions League and once again struggling to keep pace with Barca in the title race.

Los Rojiblancos failed to defend a 2-0 first-leg lead as Juventus star, Cristiano Ronaldo, netted a hat-trick in Turin to dump them out of Europe on Tuesday.
“We didn’t play the game we wanted to, it was a bad night and we made it easier for Juventus.
“We are all disappointed, as we just didn’t play. I’m the first to say I didn’t do enough, our tempo was wrong and Juventus were superior on every level.

“Considering we won the first leg 2-0, we can’t say much. I don’t know what happened, it reminded me a little of the Bayern Munich game, but that time we were able to make some adjustments.
“Tonight, Juve were superior on all levels,” Griezmann said after the Juve game.
Wilder rejects $100m+ to fight Joshua
Tuesday, March 19, 2019  SPORT

Deontay Wilder insists he “loves” being a free agent, hence he is reportedly set to reject a $100m+ deal from US broadcaster DAZN, reports

The news comes as a blow to fans hoping for a guaranteed undisputed title bout with Anthony Joshua, because it is claimed an agreement would have ensured that fight took place in 2019.

Last week, fans were given what turned out to be false hope as it emerged that Wilder would be meeting with the streaming service – who also broadcast AJ in America.

It was reported that the WBC heavyweight champion was offered upwards of $100 million for three fights against Dominic Breazeale, Joshua and then AJ again in a rematch.

However, it is now understood his team will reject the offer and, when asked about this, the American explained why.

“So many people try to dictate my career and tell me, ‘I should do this, I should do that, I shouldn’t do this, I shouldn’t do that’,” Wilder said.

“$12.5m is laughable now, $15m is laughable. All this stuff I was supposed to have done, I didn’t do none of that and now look at my career.

“I’m betting on myself and you can’t go wrong with yourself.

“I love being a free agent, I love being able to move about doing what I do and we’ll see what the future holds.”

Wilder is set to announce his next fight – which will be against Breazeale regardless – today.
Speculation suggests it will be broadcast on Showtime pay-per-view in America, as was his previous bout against Tyson Fury.
Sarri hanging on to Chelsea job by a thread, says Dorigo
Tuesday, March 19, 2019  SPORT

Blues legend, Tony Dorigo believes Maurizio Sarri is in danger of being sacked by Chelsea unless he starts picking up key results, reports

Sarri is under increasing pressure after Chelsea’s 0-2 defeat at Everton on Sunday – a result which damaged their hopes of a Premier League top-four finish.

Chelsea have picked up one point from their last two League games, and now sit three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification.

Italian coach Sarri was under fire earlier this season after heavy away defeats to Bournemouth (4-0) and Manchester City (6-0), with club officials holding high-level talks regarding his future.

Sarri remained in his role, and a fine home win over Tottenham and a strong EFL Cup final performance against Man City – despite an eventual penalty shootout defeat – suggested the Blues had turned a corner.

Chelsea’s confident progress to the Europa League has also boosted Sarri, but the recent 1-1 home draw with Wolves and the latest loss at Everton have again led to questions over the 60-year-old’s future in west London.

Asked whether Sarri was set for the sack, Dorigo – who made 146 appearances for Chelsea between 1987 and 1991 – told Love Sport Radio:

“When Maurizio Sarri came, I looked at what he did at Napoli and Empoli. The style was fantastic.

“Obviously the Premier League is different but even so you saw certain parts of Chelsea coming together and then it all fell apart again. It’s about results.

“You’ve got to get them. Do Chelsea deserve to be in the top couple? Probably not. But after that they really should be knocking on that door.

“They are just dropping off the pace and what we know about the owner [Roman Abramovich] is that he does not suffer fools gladly. When he thinks the time is right, they are gone. He’s hanging on by a thread.

“Because of the transfer ban and what Sarri is trying to do, will the owner believe in the style and beliefs of Maurizio Sarri?

“The only way he’s going to do that is if he wins things and there is one chance left. The Europa League is so, so important.”

Sarri admitted he was concerned by Chelsea’s mentality after the defeat on Merseyside, questioning how his team could follow a promising opening 45 minutes with such a disappointing second-half showing.
Jose Mourinho reveals who he feels is the most valuable player in the world between Kylian Mbappe and Neymar

Ex-Manchester United coach, Jose Mourinho, has revealed who thinks is the most valuable player in the world between Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
According to the Portuguese manager, who is currently enjoying working as a pundit since he was sacked by Manchester United last year, he said there is no other player who has more than Mbappe in terms of potential.
He told BeIN Sports: 'For a player like Mbappe, when you speak about the future, you don't need to say what he's going to be like in five years' time, in 10 years' time.
'Just focus on now. He's absolutely incredible.'
He added: 'I think going by his age and [and considering] the age of Cristiano, of Messi, [both] over 30, Neymar is 27... when you go to the market level and age is also a factor, I think he's the most valuable player in the world.
'In a hypothetical transfer, he's the most expensive player in football now.
'In terms of his qualities, [he is] unbelievable. One word is enough. It means everything.'

Lionel Messi Can Be Cloned - Genetics Scientist Claims

.Barcelona star, Lionel Messi can be cloned as claimed Genetics expert Arcadi Navarro, head of the European Genome-Phenome Archive (EGA).

Navarro made the claim during an interview on Spanish radio station Cadena SER, where he aid the player can have a double with the use of existing technology and techniques, The Sun UK reports

A clone of the Barcelona superstar would arrive as a baby with the same potential as one of the greatest players ever. Navarro said:

“Yes, Messi could be cloned with current techniques.

“We would achieve a being very similar to Messi, the result would look like Messi’s twin, as if two twins had been born and we had frozen one of them for 20 or 30 years.

”However, it is no guarantee that Mini-Messi would end up being as good as the real version – because of environmental and educational impacts as well as experience.

The real Messi joined Barcelona as a tiny 13-year-old from Argentina’s Newell’s Old Boys.

He’d had growth hormone deficiency and needed to have treatment for four years from the ages of 10 to 14.

He then spent years at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy honing his skills, before playing alongside the likes of Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Xavi and Andres Iniesta to become one of the best players in the world.

Navarro says that all those factors make Messi the player he is today – something that might not be replicated in a Messi clone.

The scientist added: “This person could have the same potential as Messi, his qualities have a genetic component and another more educational, environmental.

“Messi isn’t who he is only because of his genes, but because of everything he has lived through, his education, his stay in La Masia, the treatment he received.

“Genetics give us potential, then to fulfil it, it’s our own work.”

Manchester United caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the club’s executive chairman, Ed Woodward, the list of players to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Daily Star reports that Solskjaer wants Ed Woodward to sell out Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo and Alexis Sanchez at the end of the season.

Solskjaer has made a major impression since being put in caretaker charge following former Red Devils boss, Jose Mourinho’s sacking in December.

The Norwegian has won 10 out of the 13 Premier League games since his appointment and reached the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will tackle Barcelona in April.

The 46-year-old had said earlier this week that he is now working as if he will remain at Old Trafford for many years.

According to him,

“It is clear that I am now working as if I will stay at Man United.

“I think of the club five and 10 years ahead of time now as well.”

Solskjaer’s men are currently in the fifth position on the Premier League table with 58 points from 30 games.

Hazard lifts Belgium in Euro qualifying as Depay triggers Dutch rout

 March 22, 2019

Eden Hazard ensured Belgium kicked off their qualifying campaign for Euro 2020 in style on Thursday with a brace in a home victory over Russia, while a Memphis Depay-inspired Netherlands romped to a 4-0 win over Belarus.

World Cup semi-finalists Belgium earned a battling 3-1 win over Russia in Brussels as Hazard struck twice for Roberto Martinez’s side in their opening game in Group I.

Youri Tielemans rounded off a flowing move with a crisp low strike to fire Belgium ahead on 14 minutes at the King Baudouin Stadium, but Thibaut Courtois gifted Russia an immediate equaliser.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper, put under pressure by Artem Dzyuba, panicked and scuffed the ball straight to Denis Cheryshev who duly swept home into an empty net.

Michy Batshuayi had a shot cleared off the line, and later hit the post, but Hazard restored Belgium’s lead just before half-time after drawing a foul from Yuri Zhirkov in the area.

The Chelsea playmaker sealed the three points two minutes from time with an alert finish, while Aleksandr Golovin was sent off for Russia just before the end.
“I enjoyed myself tonight. I take a lot of pleasure from this victory, in which I scored two goals,” said Belgium captain Hazard.
“After our last game against Switzerland (a 5-2 defeat), we had to respond in front of our own fans.”
Cyprus thrashed San Marino 5-0 to provisionally seize top spot in the group, while Scotland crashed to a humiliating 3-0 loss in Kazakhstan — a nation ranked 117th in the FIFA rankings.

Yuriy Pertsukh and Yan Vorogovskiy notched early goals for Kazakhstan before Baktiyor Zainutdinov’s terrific header extinguished any chance of Scotland recovering.
– Depay dazzles –

In Rotterdam, Memphis Depay pounced on a sloppy backpass to put the Dutch ahead inside 60 seconds against Group C opponents Belarus.
The Lyon forward set up Georginio Wijnaldum for their second on 21 minutes, with Depay tucking away a penalty after half-time following a foul by Mikhail Sivakov.
Depay whipped in a cross for skipper Virgil van Dijk to nod in a fourth late on, leaving the Netherlands level on points with Northern Ireland, who beat Estonia 2-0 with Niall McGinn and Steven Davis on target in Belfast.

“It’s hard to choose between the goals and the assists,” said Depay. “The first goal was good because it was the outside of my foot, but I also enjoyed the flick that set up the second.”

Krzysztof Piatek continued his magnificent season as he came off the bench to grab the only goal in a 1-0 win for Poland away to Austria in Group G.
The AC Milan forward, already with 19 goals in 27 Serie A appearances this term, has now scored twice in three outings for his country following his international debut in September.

“This was the first step in qualifying. It was a very important game and a very important win. We took three points and so we’re very happy,” said Poland striker Robert Lewandowski.

World Cup runners-up Croatia, relegated from the top tier of the Nations League last year, ground out an unconvincing 2-1 victory against Azerbaijan in Zagreb.
Rami Sheydaev put Azerbaijan on top on 19 minutes before Croatia hit back through Borna Barisic and a 79th-minute effort by Andrej Kramaric in Group E.
Slovakia top the section on goal difference following a 2-0 defeat of Hungary in Trnava, as Ondrej Duda and Albert Rusnak scored for the hosts.
Football fans were quick to poke fun at Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' goal blunder for Belgium against Russia on Thursday.

The Red Devils were taking on the 2018 World Cup hosts at the Heysel Stadium.

Both teams were contesting their first qualifying game for the 2020 European Championship, and it didn’t take long for the match to open up.

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans opened the scoring 14 minutes in after a sweeping team from move from Belgium.

The 21-year-old picked up the ball outside the area and played a shot past Guilherme Marinato.

But Roberto Martinez’s side found themselves level two minutes after, though following a terrible blunder by Courtois.

The former Chelsea keeper, who refused to train at the club in order to push a summer move to Real Madrid, dawdled on a ball on the edge of his box.

Not electing to thump it upfield, Artem Dzubya closed down the shot-stopper, forcing him into a nervous poke which gifted Denis Cheryshev possession.

Barcelona’s Coutinho in shock return to Premier League
Monday, March 25, 2019 SPORT
                            [Image: SEwwUMn1Gi5DgUkTpt_LmG_DiSUWHv29S4JMd-Yn...rq8UQ=s0-d]
Barcelona midfielder, Philippe Coutinho is set to return to the Premier League after leaving the English top-flight league in 2016.

AS reports that Coutinho’s agents, Kia Joorabchian and Giuliano Bertolucci, have made contact with Premier League giants, Manchester United and Chelsea over the possibility of signing the Brazilian international this summer.

The report claimed that both Joorabchian and Bertolucciy are expected to receive a response from Man United and Chelsea this week.

Barcelona chiefs are willing to take a huge loss on Coutinho as they are ready to negotiate offers in excess of €80million (£68.8million) for the Brazilian international.

Coutinho has ‘failed to convince’ Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde of his ability to secure a regular role in the first team since his arrival from Liverpool in 2018.

The 26-year-old had said last week that he has not been playing well for Barcelona so far this season.

Coutinho told Movistar+: “In the last few weeks, months even, I’ve not been playing well but I still want to improve.”
Liverpool place €15m price tag on Awoniyi
March 25th, 2019

Liverpool have placed a €15million price tag on Taiwo Awoniyi’s head, with Schalke 04 among the sides trying to sign him this summer.
Schalke are keen, along with Bundesliga rivals, plus FC Bruges and Standard Liege.

And Liverpool are prepared to cash in, with Sport Foot Magazine reporting they will sell for €15m.
The Nigerian attacker has been on loan at Royal Excel Mouscron from Anfield but has hopes of returning to the Reds this summer.
However, the Imperial Academy product isn’t in the plans of Liverpool Manager
Jurgen Klopp and he now faces a decision over his next move.

Mouscron have an option to sign him when his loan deal comes to an end but they don’t have the funds to do such business.
But should he decide to leave Mouscron, Liverpool are set to significantly hike up his price in order to raise funds for their own summer spree.
Liverpool chiefs want €15million for the striker but would be willing to accept offers closer to €12million.
Whether Schalke 04’s budget could stretch for such a big outlay is unclear.

The Nigerian striker has scored seven goals and contributed two assists in nine appearances for Mouscron.
He struggled for game time and was poor in front of goal when he was initially loaned to Mouscron Belgian rivals KAA Gent before a switch on the winter transfer window.
Ronaldo injured as Portugal held by Serbia
3/26/2019 06:29:00 am  SPORT

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo left the field with a thigh injury as Portugal drew 1-1 against Serbia in an Euro 2020 qualifier on Monday.

Ronaldo was replaced after 30 minutes in Lisbon as Fernando Santos’ reigning European champions drew for a second time in their opening two games of the campaign after they were held by Ukraine on Friday.

There was no word whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would be fit for to play for his club Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Ajax on April 10.

William Carvalho wasted the best of the early chances at Benfica’s two-thirds empty Estadio da Luz.

Serbia failed to clear the ball in the box before it fell to the unmarked Real Betis midfielder who’s side-footed shot glanced past the post after five minutes.

Ajax playmaker Tadic opened the scoring from the penalty spot two minutes later.

Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio collided with an advancing Mijat Gacinovic in the box and Tadic tucked the spot kick away with ease to take a shock lead over the Euro 2016 winners.

Ronaldo was denied an equaliser two minutes later as his effort was very well saved Marko Dmitrovic.

The 156-time international left the field on the half hour mark after he pulled up chasing a ball on the left wing.

He received quick treatment from members of the medical team before returning to action but was replaced by Pizzi minutes later as Pepe took over the skipper’s armband.

The visitors were level with three minutes of the first half to play.

Porto’s Danilo Pereira hammered his shot from outside the box into the top corner past a helpless Dmitrovic.

Carvalho should have put his side into the lead 25 minutes into the second half.

Guerreiro chipped a cross to the back post, Bernardo Silva then played it into the middle of the box but Carvalho couldn’t make a solid enough contact with the ball to challenge Dmitrovic.

Fernando Santos’ outfit were denied a second penalty on 73 minutes after the linesman overruled referee Szymon Marciniak’s original decision for off-side.

The hosts pressed on for the winner in the closing ten minutes but Mladen Krstajic’s outfit defended stubbornly to claim a point in their first game of the campaign.

Next for Portugal is a Nations League semi-final against Switzerland on June 5 and Serbia travel to Kiev in a Euro 2020 qualifier two days late
Sterling calls for stadium bans as racist abuse overshadows 5-star England
3/26/2019 06:29:00 am  SPORT

Raheem Sterling believes UEFA should punish alleged racist chanting aimed at England players in Monday’s 5-1 win over Montenegro in Podgorica with a stadium closure.

Manchester City’s Sterling celebrated the visitors’ fifth goal by cupping his ears towards the home fans on a night when another impressive performance to start Euro 2020 qualifying by the Three Lions was overshadowed.

“I just want to show them you need more than that to upset us and stop us,” Sterling told Sky Sports.”It’s 2019 now, I keep saying it. It’s a shame to see this going on and we can only bring awareness to the situation.”It’s now time for the people in charge to put a real stamp on it because you can fine someone, but what is that going to do?

“You’ve got to make it a bit harder, punish fans that can’t come to games. Do something that’s going to make them think twice. If their team can’t play with fans, it’s going to be difficult.”

Sterling also tweeted a photo of his celebration with the message: “Best way to silence the haters (and yeah I mean racists).” England manager Gareth Southgate said he heard racist chants aimed at Danny Rose and promised to report the issue to UEFA.

“There is no doubt in my mind it happened. We will make sure that is reported to UEFA because it’s not acceptable,” said Southgate. “We’ve got to make sure we support our players.”

England among Euro favourites
On the field, the World Cup semi-finalists showed why they are among the favourites to be European champions next year.

Southgate’s trust in youth was again rewarded as 18-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is yet to start a Premier League game for Chelsea, shone on his full international debut, while Declan Rice, 20, was also handed his first England start.

“Fabulous performance,” said Southgate on Hudson-Odoi. “With young players it is always up to them. You can see the talent, his application has been excellent. He’s got to continue that.”

England are not used to falling behind these days, but showed a resilience to bounce back after Marko Vesovic turned inside Michael Keane and curled past Jordan Pickford on 17 minutes.

Keane made amends for his earlier error with a commanding header from Ross Barkley’s free-kick on the half hour mark to settle England’s nerves.

Nine minutes later, Barkley applied the finishing touch after Hudson-Odoi’s positive run into the box and shot which his club teammate turned in from close range.

Further goals from Barkley, Harry Kane and Sterling rounded off an excellent start to qualifying for England after a 5-0 thrashing of Czech Republic on Friday.

Sterling scored a hat-trick against the Czechs at Wembley, but also played provider here as his cut-back broke perfectly for Barkley to coolly side-foot home.

The Manchester City winger then led a rapid counter-attack with only Kane for company and squared for the England captain to tap home his 22nd international goal.

And after scoring just twice in his first 45 caps, Sterling now has six goals in his last four England games as he raced onto Jordan Henderson’s through ball before slotting low past the goalkeeper.
