Ramos gets extra one match ban

Sergio Ramos will be banned for an extra Champions League game after UEFA found the Real Madrid captain guilty of deliberately being booked.

The Spaniard picked up a late yellow card in the last-16 first-leg win over Ajax that ruled him out of the return match at the Bernabeu next week.

But he has now picked up a suspension for a possible quarter-final first-leg tie that he had sought to avoid.

“That is very obvious that he was looking to get booked there.”

European football’s governing body charged the Spanish international under Article 15, which could lead to at least a two-match suspension.

Ramos was booked for a reckless foul on Ajax forward Kasper Dolberg in the 89th minute of the tie in Amsterdam earlier this month.

Real Madrid had put themselves in a commanding position in their last-16 tie after Marco Asensio scored with three minutes of normal time remaining, establishing a comfortable 2-1 lead.

Players face suspension for two competition matches or a specified period for clearly receiving a yellow or red card on purpose.
Two away goals meant the reverse fixture on March 5 would likely be a straightforward affair for the European champions, and Ramos appeared to consult the substitutes’ bench about attempting to get booked.
He was caught by Golazo de Gol making a subtle card gesture during his interaction – and he appeared to ask: “Should I look for it?”

The yellow card was Ramos’ third in this season’s Champions League, meaning he would have served a one-game suspension in the second leg and be free to play in the quarter-final, which would likely be a tougher test.


Moments after that interaction, Ramos prevented a counter-attack by the Dutch side with a reckless foul on Dolberg.
Ramos originally seemed furious with the Danish striker but his anger completely dissipated the moment the card was brandished.

After the match, Ramos appeared to concede that he did try to get himself booked on purpose – drawing the wrath of UEFA.

“Not to underestimate the opponent, but sometimes you have to take these decisions and that’s what I decided,” he said in a post-match interview with El Chiringuito TV.

A female Chelsea fan was overwhelmed with emotion as she met her favourite player N’Golo Kante after training.

The club's latest Community Day saw a number of fans invited to come and watch their heroes get put through their paces before meeting them afterwards for pictures and autographs.

And Telamsile Dlamini, referred to the Blues by the Willow Foundation - the onlynational charity working with seriously ill young adults to fulfil uplifting and unforgettable Special Days.

Chelsea took to Twitter to share a video of the 21-year-old wiping away a tear as she watched on at the Cobham Training Centre before she was greeted by midfielder Kante.

"That moment I stepped foot on that training section where we were waiting," she said.

"I can't believe that I'm here, no, no, it's not me that is here it's just. No way, no way, I'm not here, it's not me, it's just not me. But actually, it was me.

"Today was very special because I got to meet my favourite football player, N’Golo Kante."

Real Madrid sack their coach for criticizing Casemiro and Toni Kroos on radio show during 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in Copa del Rey



 



Spanish club, Real Madrid have sacked their youth coach Alvaro Benito for making negative comments about their first team on a radio programme. 
During Wednesday's 3-0 defeat to Barcelona in a Copa del Rey semi-final second leg, Benito singled out midfielders Toni Kroos and Casemiro for criticism on radio station Cadena Ser and blamed them for the shameful defeat.
'The problem is there are players that are playing very far from their level,' he said.
I'm talking about Casemiro who at the moment is not good enough to play even a minute for Real Madrid. Kroos is fantastic when the wind is in his favour, when it goes against him he abandons ship.'
Cadena Ser later confirmed Benito had been sacked for his broadcast comments.
'Tonight Real Madrid told our colleague Alvaro Benito that he has been sacked as coach of the Juvenil B (under-18) team. The reason is they disagreed with some of the comments he has made on Cadena Ser,' presenter Dani Garrido said in a broadcast on Thursday.
In a statement released on Twitter on Friday, Benito said: 'I respect the decision of the club, which I have always defended when appearing in the media. I always felt able to speak freely about the club I love.
'I leave with no resentment and will always be grateful to the club for everything it gave me as a player and in my first steps as a coach.'

Manchester United’s squad to face Southampton revealed

Manchester United’s squad have arrived at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, ahead of their Premier League clash against Southampton on Saturday.


Anthony Martial looks set to miss the game, as he did not travel with his team-mates.

Marcus Rashford is back in line to start the match and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also included three youngsters.


James Garner, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong are all in the provisional squad to face the Saints at Old Trafford.

Sergio Romero was not spotted by photographers, however. If he is unavailable, it would leave just David De Gea and Lee Grant as goalkeepers in the squad.

There was no Phil Jones, Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic or Ander Herrera.

Eyes on Messi, Modric as Real Madrid, Barca clash

Argentine talisman Lionel Messi, and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric will be the cynosure of all eyes this evening, as Real Madrid and Barcelona clash once again in the race to this year’s LaLiga Santander title.

This is the 178th La Liga match between the two clubs. A win for Real Madrid will bring them back into the battle for Spain’s top honour, while Barca will feel that a victory at the Bernabeu will remove one of their last major hurdles on the path to glory.Barça won 5-1 in the first El Clasico of the season back in October, when Luis Suarez stepped up with a hattrick in the absence of injured Blaugrana captain Messi.

North London Derby: Tottenham, Arsenal Battle for Top-Four Place

With two successive loses in less than one week, Tottenham Hotspurs’ Premier League dream is now in ruin, therefore, hanging on to top-four position is now the ambition. That is why today’s encounter between the two North London rivals will be more than a derby as Arsenal are not prepared to lose their grip on the fourth position

Wembley plays host to the 198th North London derby today lunchtime as Tottenham Hotspur take on Arsenal looking to arrest an alarming dip in form.

Back-to-back defeats have threatened to drag Spurs into the top-four race, and their fiercest rivals could inflict more misery on them by moving to within one point with victory at the national stadium.


Following last weekend’s shock defeat to Burnley, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino claimed that it could be up to 10 years before his team are able to win the Premier League title.

If that seems like a lengthy wait the past seven days will have felt almost as long, with Tottenham following that Burnley loss up with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of London rivals Chelsea on Wednesday.

The only team Spurs dislike more than Chelsea is Arsenal, so the prospect of suffering three league defeats in a row for the first time since November 2012 at the hands of the Gunners – who were also responsible for the third defeat in that run, incidentally – will be a difficult one for them to stomach.

It is more than just their pride which could be damaged this weekend, though, as Spurs are in serious danger of being dragged into a tightly-contested top-four battle when just seven days ago they were regarded as outsiders for the title.

Victory over Burnley would have closed the gap to just two points at the top of the table, but Pochettino’s side are now nine adrift of the leaders and very much looking over their shoulders with only five points separating them from in-form Manchester United in fifth.

Arsenal, United and Chelsea all gained three points on Tottenham in midweek and the big matches keep on coming for the Lilywhites with Borussia Dortmund to follow this derby next Tuesday.

Pochettino can afford to push that match to the back of his mind for now, although if the current slump continues beyond the visit of Arsenal then even their 3-0 first-leg lead in that Champions League last-16 tie may not be safe.

One of the more surprising elements of Tottenham’s two recent defeats is that they have both come away from home, where Spurs had the best record in Europe’s top five leagues beforehand. The return to Wembley may be a welcome one, then, despite having still picked up more points on the road than they have in front of their own fans.

Tottenham have won their last four home games across all competitions, and another victory on Saturday would see them become the first team to beat Arsenal on three separate occasions at Wembley.

Pochettino has also never lost a home Premier League game against the Gunners, and the pattern of home advantage proving important in this fixture continues in that only one of the last 16 league meetings have been won by the away team.

There are still plenty of signs pointing towards a Tottenham win, then, but they may not be relishing the visit of their closest enemies quite as much as they were just a week or so ago.

Unai Emery took over at Arsenal with top-four football as the number one objective, and as things stand he is on course to achieve it.

There have been questions throughout the campaign, but realistically breaking into those Champions League places in his first season at the helm was a big ask considering they finished sixth last season and needed to adapt to the end of the Arsene Wenger era.

The fact that Arsenal could move to within one point of a Spurs side that just a week ago were regarded as title challengers should be applauded, then, but there is plenty more work to be done.

Manchester United’s form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left little margin for error in the top-four race, while Chelsea’s victory over Spurs has the feel of a turning point for the Blues and manager Maurizio Sarri too.

It is in Arsenal’s hands at the moment, though, and it is up to them to keep clear of their rivals in a potentially season-defining run of fixtures which sees the Gunners face United in their next league game after this derby. 

Arsenal are certainly arriving into that decisive domestic double-header in the sort of form they require, having won five of their last six Premier League games – as many as they had managed in their previous 13.

It is a different story when solely looking at away form, though; Arsenal have lost three of their last four outings on the road across all competitions and their only two away wins since November have come against League One Blackpool and Premier League basement club Huddersfield Town.

Victory at Wembley would see Emery’s side record back-to-back away league wins for the first time since October, but they have lost as many top-flight games as they have won on their travels so far this term and would sit eighth in the table if only away form counted.

Arsenal fans will be hoping that the old cliche of the formbook going out of the window for such matches is true to a certain extent this weekend, then, although they will also feel that this is a good time to be playing a stuttering Spurs off the back of their joint-biggest win under Emery.

Emery believes the opportunity to inch close to within a point of Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League will be a “big motivation” for his players ahead of today’s north London derby.

Tennis legend, Roger Federer wins 100th title






Roger Federer has won his 100th ATP Tour title at the Dubai Tennis Championships exactly 6,600 days after winning his first in Milan.  
 
The 37-year-old Swiss who is also a 20-time Grand Slam champion, beat Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4. Federer's first ATP title came at the Milan Open on 4 February, 2001, when he beat Frenchman Julien Boutter.  
 
He is just the second man, after American Jimmy Connors in 1983, to reach the landmark.  

"I'm delighted. It's great to win my eighth here in Dubai and in combination with my 100th singles title. To win in Marseille and then come here was difficult for Stefanos. I don't know if Stefanos was born when I won my first title (he was - in August 1998).
It's a privilege [to play against possible future champions] because I'll be watching them on the TV. It was a treat to play Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. I'm sure Stefanos will have a wonderful career. Tennis is in good hands regardless if I'm there or not" said Federer.

 
World number 11 Tsitsipas, 20, was Federer's 50th different final opponent and the 25th different nationality. It was only the second time the pair had met, with Tsitsipas beating Federer in four sets in the Australian Open last 16 in January.
 
Federer will have to win 10 more titles to beat Connors' men's record of 109, while Martina Navratilova holds the all-time record having won 167 women's singles crowns during her career.

El-clasico: Sergio Ramos Elbows Lionel Messi, He Reacts Furious

Barcelona Star Lionel Messi squared up to Sergio Ramos after the Real Madrid captain appeared to elbow him.

The Spaniard left his leg out to purposely trip Messi early in the first half.

He then went to ground himself pretending to be injured in an attempt to escape the referee’s sanctions.

But he was at it again moments later, leaving an elbow in the face of Messi who collapsed to the ground.

When Ramos went to check on the forward, the Barcelona star saw red.

Messi got in the face of Ramos as the pair went head to head.

He was clearly letting his feeling be known, likely to be that he felt Ramos knew what he was doing.

Mourinho admits he could return to Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has admitted that he has “no problem” returning to Real Madrid this summer.

The Portuguese, who was sacked last December at Manchester United, spent three years with the Spanish giants between 2010-2013.
Santiago Solari is currently in charge of the Champions League holders, after Julen Lopetegui was sacked earlier this season.

However, despite being handed a contract until June 2021, Solari is under pressure at Madrid, after the defeat by Barcelona left the club 12 points adrift of the league leaders.
Mourinho, who has been linked with the job, says he will have no qualms coming back.
“To a club that I have been before? If I think the right club, the right structure, the right ambitions, I will have no problem at all.

“I think it’s really a reason of pride when a club where you worked before wanting you back.
“They are the iconic club, I think so you know 13 Champions Leagues,” Mourinho told beIN Sports.

EPL: Pires advances major reason Zidane should take over at Chelsea

Arsenal legend, Robert Pires has stated that former Real Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane should replace Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri, at Stamford Bridge in order to tackle the “player power” problem at the West London club.

Pires stated this following Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Fulham in the Premier League encounter on Sunday.
“It’s a very strange situation with Chelsea and how they treat their managers,” Pires told Bwin.

“Sarri is a very good manager and he performed very well with Napoli, but it’s hard to see him at the club next season. There appears to be a lot of player power at Chelsea that he is struggling to overcome like many have before him.
“I think Zidane would be a very good appointment at Chelsea. He would demand respect from the Chelsea players and control the dressing room as a result of everything he has achieved both on the pitch as a player and on the bench as a manager.
“He’s a winner and a warrior. He’s had great success in the Champions League which is attractive to the Chelsea owner. It would be very good news for the Premier League if Zidane moved to England.”

Pires added: “It was a very strange situation with Sarri and Kepa at Wembley.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before. Kepa refused to leave the pitch against City.
“It was perhaps a misunderstanding, but it was very poorly handled and would have definitely been on the players’ minds when they were heading for penalties.

“We’ll never know how much it impacted them, but it also took attention away from a much-improved performance by Chelsea.
“It’s very important to respect the manager’s decision, even if we sometimes don’t agree with it as a player. We need to show respect and support our team-mates too otherwise the dressing room can be a very difficult place.
“Sarri is in a difficult situation where he needs to get positive results to save his job. He might have reacted differently and more severely if he was more comfortable in his own future at Chelsea.

“I expect Kepa to continue as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and his career will carry on as though it never happened. He can consider himself lucky, but it reveals a lot about the player power in the Chelsea dressing room that he felt he could do that at Wembley. I expect Sarri to still be at the club until the end of the season and then they will decide.”

EPL: What will happen if Manchester City fail to win title – Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has said his players should have no regrets, if they fail to clinch the Premier League title this season ahead of Liverpool.

Guardiola, speaking with Sky Sports, explained his team is currently producing “much, much better” football than during last season’s record-breaking title success.
City are marginal favourites to retain their crown, after Saturday’s commanding 1-0 win at Bournemouth and Sunday’s goalless Merseyside derby left them a point ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s Reds with nine matches to be played.

“In the way we play, we play much, much better [than last season].
“Everybody knows exactly what we have to do, everybody helps each other. And when this happens, we can compete and if we lose, we lose, but no regrets.
“I know in our society just the first one has the credit and the second one is an absolute loser.

“But it is impossible to feel that about my players, it’s impossible.
“I don’t know what is going to happen but it is impossible to feel they are not good competitors, good players, good athletes, good everything seeing what we have seen this season,” Guardiola said.

EPL: Mourinho speaks on Liverpool’s chance of winning title ahead of Manchester City


Former Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho has said that Liverpool must start winning games if they want to win the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City.

Liverpool missed their chance to top the Premier League table following their 0-0 draw with Everton on Sunday.
Manchester City defeated Bournemouth 1-0 on Saturday to occupy the number one position on the English top-flight league table.

Pep Guardiola’s men have 71 points from 29 games, while Jurgen Klopp’s side have 70 points from the same number of games.
Mourinho said he has seen a big change in Liverpool in recent months and the Reds’ inability to win games without playing well could yet cost them the Premier League title.
“I think Liverpool are not the same as they were a few months ago when everything was going in their direction,” Mourinho told beIN Sports.

“This Salah chance would be a goal and I don’t think these little things aren’t as good as before. He would have scored, even with the right foot or a bad shot, with a rebound.
“My last match at Manchester United against Liverpool, the two winning goals were deflections. They had moments and I think these are not the moments.
Mourinho added: “I don’t think it’s a misfortune but it’s just moments.

“The same happened to Roberto Firmino a couple of weeks ago and he’s coming back now. Is he fit to start the game? Probably not and that’s why he’s on the bench. There are these little problems.
“Man City got one doubtful penalty but they win. At Bournemouth it’s difficult but Mahrez scores with his right foot so even not playing well they are winning.
“I think Liverpool need to win and recover the first position

“For my experience, it is very difficult to win a title when you start losing momentum.
“You have little moments when you go down and at that moment it is very important you win.
“In my last title with Chelsea we had a match with QPR, who were already relegated, and we won minute 91. We played badly but we didn’t concede and in the key moment of the game we scored.

“We played awful but we won and I think Liverpool are in these moments. Against Manchester United Liverpool should win that match but they didn’t.
“Even in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, they are not sharp.
“I think they are also in trouble for the Champions League. 0-0 at home is not a bad result at all but I don’t see them going to Munich and imposing themselves. I think they are in this moment so-so.”

LaLiga: Sergio Ramos speaks on clash with Messi during 1-0 defeat to Barcelona


Real Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, has insisted that he did not mean to hurt Lionel Messi, after the pair clashed during Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid on Saturday evening.

Both players were involved in two flashpoints during the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ramos was lucky to escape without a yellow card after the second incident which saw the Madrid captain swipe his forearm across Messi’s face.

Messi angrily confronted Ramos after the incident, and the Argentine had to be restrained by his Barca teammates.
But Ramos has moved to downplay the incident after the game.
“These things happen in games. I did not mean to catch in him.

“However, he has taken it very badly and stayed down.
“The referee made the decision and that is the end of it for me,” Ramos told Marca.

Middlesbrough boss worries about Mikel Obi’s future

Middlesbrough boss, Tony Pulis, has said the Championship side will need more than a Premier League promotion to keep Super Eagles star, John Obi Mikel at the club.
The 31-year-old has had a massive impact at the Riverside Stadium since his arrival from the Chinese Super League club, Tianjin TEDA.
But the Teeside manager thinks Championship success may not be enough to tie him down.
With Boro well-placed in a position [fifth] for the Championship playoffs, Pulis believes convincing Mikel about the club’s potentials will be crucial in keeping him at the Riverside Stadium.

“I don’t think the key to keeping John is going up. I think the key is to show him the potential the club has.
“I think the secret to keeping John at the end of the season is to convince him this is a club going in the right direction,” Pulis told Middlesbrough’s website.

Serie A: Juventus defeat Napoli, go 16 points clear

Juventus claimed a 2-1 away victory against Napoli on Sunday, to open a 16-point gap at the top of Serie A.

The Italian champions scored twice in the first half through Miralem Pjanic and Emre Can.
Jose Callejon pulled one back for the hosts just after the hour mark, but they failed to draw level in the second half.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men, with Lorenzo Insigne crashing an 84th-minute penalty against the post.
The win has almost certainly wrapped up an eighth straight title for the unbeaten Turin giants, who have 72 points out of a possible 78, with 12 games left.

Hazard reveals what Chelsea players said about Arsenal, Tottenham

Chelsea forward, Eden Hazard, has admitted his team-mates used Arsenal’s draw with Tottenham on Saturday as fuel, for their 2-1 win against Fulham.


Spurs’ draw with Arsenal at Wembley, meant the gap between Tottenham in third and Chelsea in sixth, could be reduced to five with a win for the Blues at Craven Cottage.

Jorginho and Gonzalo Higuain scored against Fulham and Chelsea survived numerous late scares to hold onto the win.


Hazard admits the squad spoke about their rivals’ draw and used it as inspiration against Fulham.

“We talked together in the dressing room about Arsenal-Tottenham. Both lost two points.

“Top four is a hard war, because we’re not only four teams, we’re six teams.

“Now we have 11 games to play till the end of the season. We’ll try to take the maximum points,” Hazard told Sky Sports.

Luka Modric says Real Madrid are struggling in the current campaign due to the club’s inability to sign a quality replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo after his switch to Juventus last summer.

According to Daily Mail report, the Croatian playmaker, who was speaking Monday ahead of the Los Blancos Champions League last-16, reverse fixture against Ajax on Tuesday insists the club’s current strikers have also failed to step into the role vacated by Ronaldo.

The Ballon d'Or winners further hinted that the major problem facing the Galaticos is centered on inconsistency and lack of goals this term.

At the last count, Real Madrid could not account for a single goal in 180 minutes of football, in two Clasico fixtures against Barca last week.

A performance that saw Real Madrid sent packing from the Copa del Rey as well as going down 12 points adrift of Barcelona at the summit of the La Liga log,

Interestingly, Real Madrid have failed to sign quality forward as the Portuguese replacement, but opted for youngsters like Vinicius Junior and Mariano Diaz.

“The absence of Cristiano is something every team would feel; to find a replacement for Cristiano is almost impossible,” Modric told journalists.

“Given what he did for us and this club, we miss Cristiano. The club wanted the other players to make up for what he did, divided between the strikers and that is not easy.

“Cristiano scored 50 goals and you can't find someone today who scores that many. Some of us have to take a step forward and, while not scoring 50, what we need is two or three players who score 15, 20, or 10 goals and we don't have that.

“That is our biggest problem this year. For example against Barca in the cup we had many chances and when you don't take advantage your opponent punishes you.

“The club tried, and it seems good, putting faith in other players like Gareth (Bale), (Marco) Asensio, Karim (Benzema); they brought in Mariano, Vinicius is here.

“(Vinicius) is doing very well for the age he is but sometimes things don't go how we wanted them to,” Modric summed up.

Real Madrid Fans could not contain their anger after the Spanish Giants were eliminated from the Champions League by Ajax.


Real Madrid lost their last 16 second leg with Ajax 4-1 in what was a dismal display for the 13-time European champions.

Goals from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres, Dusan Tadic and Lasse Schone were enough to secure Ajax a 5-3 victory on aggregate.

Real have won the Champions League in each of the last three seasons, so their exit is catastrophic for the Spanish giants.

And Solari, who was appointed as manager in October following Julien Lopetegui’s sacking, is shouldering much of the negative fan fare on social media.

Real Madrid contact Mourinho to replace Solari as manager


Jose Mourinho is the first choice to take over at Real Madrid and has already been approached by the club, according to former president, Ramon Calderon.

Santiago Solari is under pressure at the Bernabeu, after losing back-to-back games to Barcelona and being knocked out of the Champions League by Ajax within one week.
Mourinho, who left Real in 2013, disclosed last week that he was flattered to be linked with a return.

And Calderon has now said it is only a matter of time before it is official.
He told Sky Sports News: “I have no doubt Mourinho is the first option for the president. He’s been called in the last weeks.
“It was when Zinedine Zidane left, Mourinho was with Manchester United and he said it was not the right moment to come back, but maybe now he’s free.

“I think there will be many chances he will be on that bench next season.”
Asked about other potential candidates, he added: “Maybe Mauricio Pochettino, they are talking about him. But there will be many in the next days because fans can’t accept this situation.
“There’s been three or four months moaning now, lamenting and regretting what we did planning this team.”
