Carabao Cup final: Hasselbaink reveals why Man City will beat Chelsea
Sunday, February 24, 2019  SPORT

                               [Image: JOwG4wVg-vSIva79lg69gZUMk9FzQlwEeNPbg2Gw...ZKOgo=s0-d]
Former Chelsea striker, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, has said they don’t stand a chance against Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, because there is no leadership in the team.

Hasselbaink, speaking with Sky Sports, however admits that the City clash and Wednesday’s Stamford Bridge date with Tottenham are season-defining games for the Blues.

“It’s a big week but every match is important for Chelsea now and how they react against City and Tottenham will shape their season.

“They face a mountain to climb to beat City today but they did it in the League in December and must go back to that plan and have some belief.

“Chelsea were too open and passive in the 6-0 defeat at City so at Wembley they have to be aggressive, hungry and press hard.

“After losing heavily to City and then 2-0 to Manchester United in the FA Cup it’s no time for a blame game, finger-pointing or for them to be be feeling sorry for themselves.

“They have to roll their sleeves up, stick together and stand up to the challenge and the pressure.

“My worry, though, is the lack of leaders in the current squad. Good players, yes, but I don’t see any leadership on the pitch.

“In the past Chelsea have been blessed with big characters on and off the pitch and in the dressing-room.

“You only have to think of John Terry who I played with in my time at Chelsea. Even in his younger days John was brilliant at keeping the group together whenever things weren’t going well.

“But it wasn’t just him. There was Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba and later they had Michael Ballack – big, forceful personalities.

“More recently they had Diego Costa too. Whatever you say about Costa, and yes it might have been hard work managing him, he was a big character with desire and always ready for a battle.

“He’s been a huge loss for Chelsea and I still can’t understand why he was allowed to go. Like the others I’ve mentioned he would drive the team forward in tough moments.

“That’s what big players do. They pull people together and lead by example but I don’t see those types of players at Chelsea now,” he said.

Crystal Palace defender James Tomkins was on Saturday pictured looking down his goalkeeper Vicente Guaita's shorts during his side's 4-1 victory away to Leicester.
It appeared Guaita had a problem at the King Power Stadium which in the process Tomkins assisted him to re-tie the elastic cord and peered down his shorts since the Spaniard had his gloves on.
But the innocent photos are causing a stir online with many trolling the football stars.

LaLiga: Messi makes history in Barcelona’s 4-2 win over Sevilla
 February 24, 2019

Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, on Saturday made history in his side’s 4-2 win over Sevilla in the La Liga encounter at the Estadio Ramon Stadium.

Three goals from Lionel Messi and a goal from Luis Suarez gave Barcelona all three points against Sevilla.
However, a goal from Jesus Navas and Gabriel Mercado was not enough to give the hosts a point against the Catalan club.

According to Barcablaugranes, Messi’s hat-trick against Sevilla means the Argentine captain has now scored 50 hat-tricks in his career for club (44) and country (6).
The result has seen Barcelona move 10 points clear ahead of second-placed, Atletico Madrid at the top of the La Liga table.
Messi will hope to lead Barcelona to victory when they tackle Real Madrid in the second-leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash on Wednesday.

EPL: Solskjaer names two players that helped Man United in 0-0 draw with Liverpool

 February 24, 2019

Manchester United caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heaped praises on the likes of Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw following his side’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Both Man United and Liverpool failed to score at Old Trafford as the two teams lacked any real clear-cut chances during the match.
Solskjaer hailed McTominay and Shaw for their brilliant performances against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Speaking after the match, Solskjaer was quoted by Metro UK as saying: “Everything that could have gone wrong in the first half went wrong.
“We had four injuries – we had to keep Marcus Rashford on – it seemed like it was going to be a tough afternoon.
“I can’t remember Liverpool having a chance. Even though they had possession, I can’t remember David de Gea making a save.
“Scott McTominay was excellent. When they need a goal and they take Mohamed Salah off you know Luke Shaw has played a good game.”

Carabao Cup final: Manchester City defeat Chelsea, retain trophy

Manchester City have won this year’s Carabao Cup, following a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea, in the final played at Wembley on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s men the trophy last season and were confident of lifting it again, especially after their 6-0 thumping of the Blues in the Premier League weeks ago.
However, there were no goals in 120 minutes of action and the match had to be decided via spot kicks.

Jorginho and David Luiz missed from 12 yards, as Maurizio Sarri failed to win his first piece of silverware as a manager.
Chelsea will take on Tottenham Hotspur next in the league on Wednesday.

Arsenal manager, Unai Emery has spoken on his side’s 2-0 victory over Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday.

Goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave Arsenal all three points against Southampton at Emirates Stadium.
Emery said the Gunners ‘deserved’ the victory over Southampton because his players played very well and converted their chances against the visitors.

“We deserved to win,” Emery told BBC Sport.
“We got the chances and we played very well.
“The second half was maybe an under-performance from the first but I think also we deserve another goal.

“The most important thing is the three points at home with our supporters.
“We are thinking it’s a good step and it’s game by game. Now we are happy, we are at the moment in this position and we carry on.”

The Spanish stopper apologised to fans for his actions which left Blues boss Maurizio Sarri furious at Wembley.
And the 24-year-old keeper was fined £190,000 by the club, which was donated to the Chelsea Foundation.

Kepa said in a statement on Chelsea's official website: "Although there was a misunderstanding, on reflection, I made a big mistake with how I handled the situation.

"I wanted to take the time today to apologise fully and in person to the coach, to Willy, my team-mates and to the club.

"I have done this and now I want to offer the same apology to the fans.

"I will learn from this episode and will accept any punishment or discipline the club decides is appropriate."

Blues manager Sarri insisted the matter has been put to bed and Chelsea are focused on their clash with Spurs on Wednesday.

Sarri said: "‘Kepa and I have spoken about the incident. It was a good conversation.

"There was a misunderstanding yesterday but he realises he made a big mistake in the way he reacted.
"He has apologised to me, his team-mates and the club.

"It is up to the club if they want to discipline him according to the club rules, but for me this matter is now closed.

"Everyone’s focus is now on the next game and we must all now put this behind us."

SunSport revealed that Sarri laid into Kepa in the dressing room after Sunday's loss to Manchester City at Wembley.

Both manager and goalkeeper were at Cobham on Monday as Chelsea returned to work in preparation for their Tottenham showdown.

Tottenham Striker Harry Kane attempted to headbutt chelsea defender Cesar Azpiculeta on Wednesday night.

The England star deliberately moved his head towards the Chelsea captain.

There looked to be minimal contact with Azpilicueta but it does not matter how severe it was.

MySportDab reports even though it was an attempted headbutt, that still carries the same punishment — a red card.

Fortunately for Kane, Azpilicueta did not make a meal of it.

The incident seemed to be missed by the match officials and the FA could now take retrospective action against Kane.

Copa del Rey: Pique reacts as Barcelona dumps Real Madrid out, breaks record

Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique, has said their record of six consecutive Copa del Rey finals, will be replicated following their 3-0 win over bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Barca is now the first team to reach six successive Copa finals.
Luis Suarez’s brace sealed victory on Wednesday and a 4-1 aggregate triumph for the LaLiga champions.

“Reaching a sixth final…I don’t think what we have achieved is something that will ever happen again in the Copa del Rey.
“We’ve won it a lot in recent years but we want to win it again. It’s special to qualify for a final. It’s actually been more out of habit than anything else. Turning things around against Levante and Sevilla and then this.
“It was an important win. Madrid were on top in the first half, but we took advantage of the space in the second half to win the game and the tie. It’s a great way to reach the final. Winning here and reaching the final is always a cause for happiness,” Pique told reporters after the match.

Manchester United caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has praised striker Romelu Lukaku following his side’s 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

A brace from Romelu Lukaku and a strike from Ashley Young gave Manchester United all three points against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
However, a goal from Joel Ward was not enough to hand Crystal Palace a point against Man United.

Solskjaer hailed Lukaku for his “fantastic” performance against the hosts.
“Lukaku has been putting a shift in for the team, doing loads more running than he normally does but he was a number nine again today and he got two goals. Fantastic,” Solskjaer was quoted by Sky Sports as saying post-match.
“He was through the middle. We created chances for him, he put them away well.

“He’s done loads of running up and down the line, right wing, left wing. He’s had a different role because of Rash’s form.
“He got a chance up front. Two very good finishes, could have had another one as well earlier on, so I’m very pleased for Rom. He is a quality finisher.
“It’s great to have him around the place, always happy, always working on his finishing.

“He’s played more than you think, but he’s played wide right, wide left, so it’s Rash’s form that has moved him out there. Now with Rash’s injury he grabbed the chance.”
The result means United have now won eight straight games on the road since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over, a feat not even legendary Red Devils boss, Sir Alex Ferguson could achieve.
Manchester United will tackle Southampton this weekend in their next Premier League game at Old Trafford.

Manchester City have agreed to a £650m sponsorship deal with Puma, this is the second-highest in the Premier League.

The new deal by the reigning Premier League champion sits only behind Manchester United’s with Adidas when it comes to the most lucrative in the English top-flight.

City, who currently work in partnership with Nike, will see a new sponsorship contract kick in from the summer of 2019.

The figures represent a huge hike on City’s current kit contract, which stands at £20m a year with Nike.

Initial discussions with Puma centred on producing kits solely for City before other clubs under their umbrella were later brought to the table.

Claudio Ranieri sacked by Premiership club Fulham

Italian football manager, Claudio Ranieri has been sacked as manager of Premiership club Fulham, with first-team coach and former footballer Scott Parker taking temporary charge.

His dismissal comes after he lost  2-0 to Southampton on Wednesday, which left the club19th in the Premier League, 10 points from safety with 10 games left.

Ranieri who led Leicester to an unlikely title triumph back in 2016, said in a statement: 'I am obviously disappointed with the recent results and that we could not build on the good start we made following my appointment.
'Finally, I would like to thank the club, the players and the fans for the support they have given me during my time at the club.'

Chairman of the club,  Shahid Khan said in a statement: Following our discussion this afternoon, Claudio Ranieri agreed with my decision that a change was in the best interest of everyone,' chairman Shahid Khan said in a statement.
'No surprise to me, Claudio was a perfect gentleman, as always.
'Claudio’s tenure at Fulham didn’t produce the outcome we anticipated and needed when I appointed him as manager in November, but be assured he is not solely to blame for the position we are in today.
'Claudio walked into a difficult situation, inheriting a side that gained only one point in its prior eight matches, and he provided an immediate boost by leading our club to nine points in his first eight matches as manager.
'Though we were unable to maintain that pace thereafter, I am grateful for his effort. Claudio leaves Fulham as our friend and he will undoubtedly experience success again soon.'
Ranieri was due to take a recovery session on Thursday, but Scott Parker now takes over on an interim basis.
'Scott’s immediate assignment is merely to help us stabilise, grow and rediscover ourselves as a football club,' Shahid Khan continued. 'If Scott can answer that challenge, and our players respond to the opportunity, perhaps victories will follow in the months ahead.'

Yobo tips Omeruo to step into his shoes

Former Super Eagles Captain, Joseph Yobo, on Wednesday said he had tipped in-form CD Leganes FC player, Kenneth Omeruo, to step into his shoes as a regular centre-back.
The retired footballer made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria at his unveiling as brand ambassador of the inaugural Trophy 5-A-Side “Join the Field of Honour” competition.
NAN reports that Yobo capped 101 for Nigeria after he had starred for the country in three FIFA World Cup and Six African Cup of Nations.

He made his debut against Zambia in 2002.
Yobo captained the senior national team in 2010 after the retirement of Kanu Nwankwo and went on to win the AFCON as a captain in 2013 with a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso in South Africa.

The 38-year-old also scored seven goals during his international career after his first goal against Madagascar in the 2012 AFCON qualifiers on September 4.
Looking back at his successful years in the Green White Green jersey and a possible successor to the shoes he left behind, Yobo said Omeruo was capable of taking over from him.

He said: “I am happy for Omeruo because he played along with me.
“I am happy that he is fulfilling his potential because he is a good defender.
“Omeruo is someone I have hoped to take over from me and I am happy that he is in Spain and doing fantastically well.

“I am also happy other defenders such as Leon Balogun and other players are performing as well.

“It is always good that we have our defenders fit and at the moment doing well.
“Super Eagles team is presently doing well now and they need the support of all Nigerians to do well at the AFCON 2019.”
Yobo, who once cut his teeth as Standard Liege of Belgium, Everton FC and Norwich FC of England and Fenerbache FC of Turkey as a player, called for inclusion of fringe players for the Super Eagles qualifiers.
He said: “The Super Eagles have now qualified for AFCON, so the game against Seychelles is not so important.
“It is important to give the upcoming and fringe players a chance.
“The Super Eagles can as well win the AFCON.
“It is possible because I was fascinated about the way they qualified for the tournament with a game in hand.

“We should note that qualifiers are always tough for Nigeria but it happened because the team build on the success from the World Cup.

“The future is bright for the team and I believe in them.

“In football you go into the tournament with the mind of winning but the team should take it one game after other.”

EPL: Lukaku fires brace in Man U win
by Bowale Odutola
 February 28, 2019
2 min read

Romelu Lukaku made his mark as he capitalised on Manchester United’s lengthy injury list to lead them to a 3-1 victory at Crystal Palace that maintains their pursuit of a top-four finish.

The Belgian had gone nine games without a goal and was becoming a more peripheral figure since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment, while Marcus Rashford established himself as United’s leading striker.

With Rashford not fit to start and Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard also injured, United were without their entire first-choice front three.

But after recovering from missing a glorious chance Lukaku scored in each half to keep Arsenal, a point and a position above them in fourth, under pressure.

A further finish from Ashley Young, after Joel Ward had responded for 14th-placed Palace, ultimately ensured a continuation of the momentum they will hope to carry into next week’s crucial Champions League fixture at Paris St Germain and perhaps next season’s competition.

If Palace had taken confidence from United’s dwindling options, which also meant rare starts for Fred and Alexis Sanchez, they too were vulnerable without the injured Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mamadou Sakho.

Ward and Martin Kelly therefore respectively started at right-back and in central defence, and Lukaku should have taken advantage of the hosts’ uncertainty as early as the eighth minute, when Luke Shaw’s corner found him in space directly in front of goal but he somehow volleyed over.

The lively Andros Townsend twice threatened for Palace, when on both occasions he shot narrowly wide, before in the 33rd minute after Shaw again put him into space, Lukaku gave United the lead.
Fred had found Shaw on the left wing, and after he resisted challenges to carry possession into Palace’s penalty area he laid off to Lukaku, who this time showed greater composure to take a touch before curling first time into the bottom right corner and beyond Vicente Guaita’s reach.

Jeffrey Schlupp almost produced an immediate response when he glanced wide from close range but, if they remained in contention for a point, further poor defending undermined them as Lukaku extended United’s lead in the second half.
Paul Pogba should already have scored with a header when, from a 52nd-minute corner, Palace were static as further headers from Chris Smalling and then Victor Lindelof found Lukaku, who under minimal pressure by the near post held off James Tomkins to smartly finish over Guaita.

The hosts’ goal came through Ward in the 66th minute, when after Townsend was dispossessed, Schlupp collected the loose ball on the left and beat David De Gea by crossing to Ward at the back post, leaving the defender with the near-open goal into which he sent his diving header.
If Palace threatened a second through substitute Max Meyer, United were clinical in delivering their third, in the 83rd minute through Young.

Lukaku was again involved when exchanging passes with Pogba before the latter fed Young into space at the back post, and United’s captain secured all three points by calmly finishing low beyond the beaten Guaita.

In stoppage time Ward kicked the ball from De Gea’s grasp and in after a header from Christian Benteke, but referee Martin Atkinson rightly ruled it out.

Benzema’s house burgled

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema’s house was reportedly burgled as the Frenchman played for Los Blancos in their defeat to fierce rivals Barcelona on Wednesday evening.

Santiago Solari’s side were beaten 3-0 in El Clasico at the Bernabeu, crashing out of the Copa del Rey at the semi-final stage.
And things went from bad to worse for Benzema when he discovered his house in the Spanish capital had been robbed, according to Sport.

It is unclear how much was taken in the reported burglary but an investigation is apparently underway.
Benzema becomes the latest player to be targeted while playing, with PSG’s Dani Alves and Barcelona’s Kevin Prince Boateng having been the subject of burglaries in recent weeks.

There has also been a spate of burglaries on footballer’s houses in England, particularly in the north west, with Sadio Mane the latest big name to fall victim.

Leaders Liverpool face derby test as EPL title race heats up

English Premier League leaders Liverpool will need to maintain their excellent recent record against Everton in Sunday’s Merseyside derby if they are to hold their advantage over second-placed Manchester City.

Liverpool are unbeaten in 18 matches against their neighbours — separated only by a park — since a defeat in October 2018, and the current 33-point gap tells its own story.

Juergen Klopp’s side has laboured and drawn too many games of late, allowing title-holders and second-placed Manchester City to come within one point.

But the Reds were back to their devastating best on Wednesday, crushing Watford 5-0 at Anfield.

“The win gives us more confidence,” said Senegalese striker Sadio Mane who scored twice.

“We know playing against Everton is never easy. But we are a great team and we are used to playing this kind of game.”
Everton ended a run of three defeats with a 3-0 victory at Cardiff City on Tuesday.
But Marco Silva’s side will need the performance of their season to create an upset at Goodison Park.

Liverpool’s single point lead may have vanished by then after Manchester City’s trip to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne says it is vital Pep Guardiola’s side do not over-think their workload.

They won the League Cup on Sunday and are still in the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

“The schedule is so tough. We are there in every competition and playing well and winning. So, we just need to keep going,” he said.
“If you come here and don’t enjoy the pressure, it’s better to leave.”
Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth are without a win in four games.

The North London derby may not have title implications, after Tottenham’s defeats to Burnley and Chelsea left them nine points off top.

But with fourth-placed Arsenal just four points behind Mauricio Pochettino’s side, there is plenty at stake.

“It’s never easy to be positive after a defeat … It will be tough, but we need to move on quickly and try to be ready to compete on Saturday,” said the Argentine manager.
“It’s always important and the fixture is so tough for us, but we need to be sure we are going to be ready to compete at our best,” he said.

Arsenal have won their last three games, including Wednesday’s 5-1 crushing of Bournemouth.

Injury-hit Manchester United host lowly Southampton at Old Trafford after maintaining their unbeaten league record under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

With a number of absentees, the Norwegian could give a start to 17-year-old James Garner who made his debut with a substitute appearance at Selhurst Park.
“We’ve been waiting for that chance. Of course, now with Nemanja (Matic) and Ander (Herrera) injured, there’ll be more chances for Jimmy.
“We might even see him on Saturday against Southampton again,” he said.
New Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers will take charge of the Foxes for the first time on Sunday at his former club Watford.
