Marseille confirms former Chelsea and Tottenham boss, Andre Villas-Boas as new manager

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur boss, Andre Villas-Boas has been confirmed as the new manager of Marseille.
The 41-year-old Portuguese will replace Rudi Garcia, who left the club after helping them to a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1.
“We’re delighted to bring in a coach whose success has been recognised at the highest level in Europe and the world,” Marseille owner Frank McCourt said.
“The philosophy and approach to the game of Andre Villas-Boas fits with what we want for OM and will contribute to revitalising our project after a disappointing season. Our expectations are still just as big and we will make the necessary chances to achieve our objectives.”
Villas-Boas, popularly known as AVB, has spent the past 18 months out of management following his decision to leave the Chinese Super League.
He joined Chelsea from Porto, where he won the Europa League aged just 33 – in 2011, but joined Tottenham in 2012 when the Blues sacked him.

Arsenal goalkeeper, Petr Cech, has said Chelsea’s approach to winning at all costs, differs from the lack of pressure placed upon players to perform at the Emirates.
After a trophy-laden 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge, the 37-year-old swapped west for North London in the summer of 2015.
Cech has only won one FA Cup during his time at Arsenal, ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final against his former club.
The match in Baku will mark the final game of Cech’s illustrious career and he admitted it took time to adapt to the different atmosphere within the Arsenal dressing room created by Arsene Wenger.
“It will sound strange but I think generally at Arsenal there is not enough pressure.
“Arsene is a real gentleman. As much as he hates losing, he stays a gentleman. If you lose, you win, you lose, you win, he kind of carries on. That’s something I’ve never experienced before.
“At Chelsea, at the times when we drew, it felt like a funeral in the dressing room. It was so bad.
“If we drew against a big team at home, it was like, ‘Oh no, it is impossible we didn’t win at home’. It came from everywhere: the players, the coach. Since the start when I was there, the pressure was there every game,” Cech told Standard Sport.

Ernesto Valverde is set to stay on as Barcelona manager, after Lionel Messi intervened, Marca reports.
Valverde was on the verge of getting sacked, following Barca’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Valencia.
The Catalans lifted the LaLiga trophy, but the board are believed to have their doubts over the former Athletic Bilbao coach, especially after the Champions League capitulation against Liverpool.
But it is understood that after days of deliberation, the Barcelona board have decided to keep faith with Valverde for the start of next season.
It is reported several key figures in the Barca dressing room expressed their wish for Valverde to stay on, led by skipper Messi.
The Argentine has remained supportive of his manager, despite his public dismay at the Champions League semi-final exit.
Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Ivan Rakitic were all believed to have backed the decision for Valverde to keep his job.

Former Super Eagles forward, Victor Moses has described Antonio Conte as the most important manager he’s ever worked with.
He added that the Italian football tactician left a mark on his career.
Before the arrival of Conte at Chelsea, the right winger had spent three successive loan spells at Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham United.
The former Italian boss revived the career of the Nigerian by converting him into a wing back as they won the Premier League title for the 2016-2017 season and the FA Cup the following season.
”I have played under a lot of managers and I’ve loved every single one of them. The most important one was Antonio Conte. He just came in, he changed everything,” Moses told TRT World.
”He is an amazing man, he totally changed my game to be honest. He gave me that fighting spirit to believe in myself and to enjoy my football same time.
”And then when he came that first season, we won the league, the following season we won the FA Cup.
”It was an amazing season for me under Antonio Conte and I’ll always respect him for that, he’s an amazing man.”
Moses has been linked with a summer move to Italian giants, Inter Milan.
Asked if he would be interested in reuniting with Conte, who is the favourite to replace Luciano Spalletti as coach of the Nerazzurri, Moses said, ”To be honest I am here with Fenerbahce, I just want to keep on playing my football at the moment. I am happy with the club.
”As I said before I came here to play football and I’m playing the football at the moment and no one knows what the future is going to hold. I love the club.”

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has hit out at his Manchester City counterpart, Pep Guardiola’s suggestion that winning the Premier League is more important than the Champions League.
The Reds take on Tottenham on Saturday and are playing in the final for the second successive season, having lost out to Real Madrid a year ago.
Klopp’s side also missed out on clinching the Premier League title this campaign, as Guardiola guided his City team to top spot.
“The Premier League is more important for Guardiola because he hasn’t been in the Champions League final for a while.
“Don’t get me wrong, we all know he is the best manager in the world and he deserves all the praise he gets.
“I say that the Champions League is more important because I can still win it and we have already lost the Premier League, as they have a better team and I think our season was better than theirs,” Klopp told a press conference on Tuesday.

Manchester United striker, Marcus Rashford, has tipped Chelsea to overcome Arsenal in the Europa League final in Baku.
The two London sides are set to face off on Wednesday night, as their campaigns come to a close.
Chelsea will be eager to end Maurizio Sarri’s first season with a trophy, while Arsenal can secure a spot in the Champions League with victory.
The Gunners missed out on the top four in the Premier League, finishing fifth and one spot above Manchester United.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Rashford said: “I’m going to go Chelsea, just because of Hazard.
“He can do anything at any moment.”

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri, has hinted that he wants to stay in the Premier League, despite strong speculation linking him to the vacant Juventus job.
Juve are on the lookout for a new boss following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri, who announced his decision to step down earlier this month after winning five successive league titles.
Sarri, who finished as a runner-up in Serie A with Napoli in the 2017/2018 campaign, is rumoured to be high on the champions’ list of targets to succeed Allegri.
But the 60-year-old is a big fan of English football and is unsure whether he wants to move on after just a single season in the Premier League.
“For me, at the beginning, it was really difficult to understand my players and their mentality. But after a difficult January, in February they started to change, I think, or probably I changed – I don’t know.
“At this moment I love them. I have 22 wonderful men, wonderful players, so I’m really very happy with them. Of course, I have to consider the future. I have to consider that I love English football, I love the Premier League.
“I want to think only about the final. I have a contract with Chelsea for two years and so first of all I will speak with Chelsea, but this is not the moment.
“Now we have to think about the final because you know very well our feeling is that we deserve to win – we want to win.
“Today I need only to speak about the final and my players need only for me to speak about the final,” Sarri said ahead of the Europa League final.

Alexandre Lacazette says there are no ill feelings between himself and fellow Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The two players are set to lead the line for the Gunners on Wednesday in the Europa League final against Chelsea.
Aubameyang finished the Premier League campaign in a three-way tie for the Golden Boot alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on 22 goals, solidifying his place among the world’s best goalscorers.
Lacazette, on his part, bagged 13 goals himself, good for a place in the Premier League’s top 10.
But the Frenchman insists that there’s no jealousy between himself and the Gabon international.
“Me, I am not jealous of anyone. I just want to win trophies, Auba as well.
“Of course it is always better to play together, but when one plays and the other stays on the bench you just have to help the team when you can.
“Yeah (it does feel telepathic), but sometimes it is wrong! Sometimes he goes left and I put the ball right. But normally we work a lot to be on the same wavelength. We want to be as perfect as possible.
“Of course, the coach knows we want to play together but of course he has to make a choice and we have to respect them. Playing with Auba is always a pleasure for me,” Lacazette told the UK Mirror.

Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz Jr: live at Madison Square Garden bout
Unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua's first fight in America will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Joshua's US bow on 1 June sees him face America-born Andy Ruiz Jr at New York's Madison Square Garden, a "bucket list" venue according to BBC Sport boxing correspondent Mike Costello.
The contest, for the IBF, WBA and WBO world titles, will take place at around 03:00 BST on Sunday, 2 June.
Costello said the 29-year-old's career is moving on to "another iconic venue".
Joshua v Ruiz: The British are coming
Boxing calendar
Champions list
Costello, who will call the action from ringside, added: "There are hallowed arenas across all sports that bring an extra dimension to a commentator's excitement and Madison Square Garden, especially for a world heavyweight title fight, belongs high on the bucket list."
Joshua's bout will be one of three commentaries on BBC Radio 5 Live, following Callum Smith's defence of his WBA world super-middleweight title against Hassan N'Dam and Katie Taylor's lightweight showdown with Delfine Persoon, where all four women's world titles are on the line.
Throughout the week, 5 Live's boxing podcast with Costello and Steve Bunce will deliver fresh editions on Monday, after the midweek main event news conference, following Friday's weigh-in and on Sunday morning in the hours after the bout.
The BBC Sport website will provide updates throughout the week, as well as a live text commentary in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Joshua has not been in action since his impressive win last September over Alexander Povetkin, where he took his record to 22 wins from 22 fights, including 21 knockouts.
Ruiz stepped up for the bout when it was announced Joshua's original opponent Jarrell Miller failed drugs tests in April.
Ruiz, who has one loss in 33 fights, has said Joshua "fights like a big robot" in the build-up, while Joshua has labelled his opponent "a great challenger".
Ben Gallop, head of BBC Radio and Digital Sport, said: "Anthony Joshua is one of the most iconic British sportsmen of his generation and his first fight in the USA is an event not to be missed. I'm delighted we're able to bring our listeners exclusive commentary of the bout on BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website following the conclusion of the all-English Champions League final, making for an unmissable night of sport on 5 Live this Saturday."
