EPL: Solskjaer admits Man Utd lucky to defeat West Ham, players distracted by Barcelona


Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has admitted his team was lucky to beat West Ham 2-1 on Saturday.

Paul Pogba scored twice from the spot either side of Felipe Anderson’s finish, to give United all three points at Old Trafford.
However, the hosts were outplayed for most of the game and had controversial decisions go their way.

When the Hammers go through, they found goalkeeper David De Gea in inspired form.
Solskjaer feels his players had the Champions League quarter-final second leg at Barcelona next week on their minds.
“We got away with it, put it that way. It’s not easy because of Wednesday night and we made changes to the team, we got away with it: they deserved goals but we’re allowed to have a good goalkeeper.

“Maybe the fact we have a game on Tuesday played on some of the player’s mind.
“I can’t understand why we play on Wednesday and then Tuesday and others play Tuesday then Wednesday, that’s my one little complaint to UEFA,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports

Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba has reacted to his side’s Premier League 2-1 victory over West Ham United on Saturday evening.

Pogba scored twice from the spot to give Man United all three points against West Ham at Old Trafford.
The France international admitted that Ole Gunnar Solskjear’s men “didn’t play well” against the visitors.

“Even if, you know, we didn’t have a good performance as a team, the result is there,” Pogba told BT Sport.
“We will think only about this today. It was really open, but we didn’t play well.
“The chances we had, the space that we had, we had the players but we maybe played a bit too slow.

“We weren’t dangerous, so we’re going to have to fix that.
“Now the game is gone, we’ll learn from that and move on to the next one.
“I really don’t know if we are tired because of the Champions League game.

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp has spoken on the club’s desire to win the Premier League title after they defeated Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

Klopp said they were eager to know the outcome of Manchester City’s game with Crystal Palace played earlier on Sunday, adding however, that they expected Pep Guardiola’s side to win the match.
Man City, Liverpool’s closest challenger for the EPL title, defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 in Sunday’s early kick off.

Guardiola told Sky Sports, “The first question in the meeting before our game was ‘what is the City score? You cannot avoid knowing about it. But it isn’t interesting to us.

“We expect them to win all their games, so we just need to get as many points as possible and if we’re champions then great, but if not, it is still a really good football team.”

Also speaking, Reds defender, Virgil Van Dijk said, “Five years ago didn’t matter this time. They were very disappointed back then, but this was a very different game.”

Chelsea include impressive manager in three-man shortlist to replace Sarri


 



                          
Chelsea have reportedly identified Watford coach, Javi Gracia, in a three-man shortlist to replace current manager, Maurizio Sarri, at the club.

According to Daily Record, Chelsea’s hierarchy have been hugely impressed by the job Gracia has done at Vicarage Road.

Gracia’s men are on course for a seventh-place finish in the Premier League this term and are already in the final of the FA Cup.

The report also claimed that the other two managers on the lists are; Wolves coach, Nuno Espirito Santo and Derby County manager, Frank Lampard.

This is coming after Chelsea were defeated 2-0 by Liverpool in Sunday’s Premier League encounter at Anfield.

Two goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah gave Jurgen Klopp’s side all three points against the Blues.

Sarri, who joined Chelsea last summer, has been under intense pressure at Stamford Bridge due to the club’s recent poor performance.

Sarri’s men are currently in the fourth position on the EPL table with 66 points from 34 games.

Khadim Ndiaye Suffers Both Legs Break In Match (Photos)

A distraught referee burst into tears at the sight of a Senegal Goalkeeper double leg break, MySportDab reports.

Bamlak Tessema, an Ethiopian official, was spotted crying after the horrific injury during Horoya AC’s African Champions League quarterfinal.

Horoya AC lost their goalkeeper Khadim Ndiaye after he suffered a double leg break after colliding with his own team-mate.

The injury to Senegal international Ndiaye followed an attempted slide tackle to clear the ball from goal.

Unfortunately team-mate Boubacar Samassekou had the same idea and the incident resulted in the former's broken leg.

The incident against Wydad Casablanca visibly left Ndiaye's team-mates stunned as he laid stricken on the floor during their 5-0 defeat.

Golden Eaglets qualify for World cup 2019






The Nigeria’s U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets have qualified for the World Cup holding later in the year in Brazil. The team defeated Angola 1-0 in Tanzania at the ongoing Africa qualifiers.
The only goal was scored in the first half through a penalty.
The Golden Eaglets dominated the game but lost many goal-scoring opportunities in both halves.
When their Angolan counterparts were reduced to 10 men following a red card to the captain, the Golden Eaglets couldn’t capitalize on the advantage.
They went on to lose more open chances to increase the tally.
Nigeria qualified having defeated host Tanzania 5-4 in the opening game of the tournament.

(NAN)Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said that his team would “stand up” and fight for the Premier League title after their dreams of a quadruple were ended by Wednesday’s dramatic exit from the Champions League.

City went out on the away goals rule after their 4-3 win at the Etihad Stadium left the two legged quarter-final standing at 4-4 on aggregate.
Guardiola’s side thought a late goal from Raheem Sterling had earned them a place in the semi-finals but the effort was ruled as an offside by VAR.
The VAR review confirmed that Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.

“It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it,” said Guardiola.
“After 20 minutes we were 3-2 up. In the second half we created a lot of chances and we scored the goals we needed.
”Unfortunately, it was a bad end for us so congratulations to Tottenham and good luck for the semi-finals,” said the Spaniard.
City were also eliminated by English opponents, Liverpool, in the quarter-finals last season.
Guardiola said he continued to back the use of VAR, which also allowed Fernando Llorente’s decisive goal for Spurs despite suspicions of handball.
But he questioned the decision reached over Llorente’s goal – which officials concluded had rolled off the Spaniard’s hip and into the net in the wild encounter at the Etihad.

“I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente’s goal is handball, maybe from the referee’s angle it is not,” he said.
A packed stadium had roared City on in the second half with a thundering strike from Aguero 59th minute seeming to send Guardiola’s side on their way to the last four.

“I am so proud of the players and the fans,” said Guardiola.
“
“I have never heard noise like that since I have been in Manchester but football is unpredictable.

City host Spurs again on Saturday in the Premier League as they battle with Liverpool for top spot having seen their dream of a quadruple end.
Having won the Carabao Cup (League Cup), City are in the FA Cup final and are two points behind Liverpool, with a game in hand, in the league.
“We have to stand up and react. It is a close (short amount of) time and the same team. We can’t think too much now.
“We have to try to sleep as much as possible and the day before the game we are going to prepare for the game,” he said.
“We have fought for nine or 10 months in the Premier League and still we are there. It is in our hands.
”Today is tough and tomorrow will be tough too but the day after we will be ready.”

Ronaldo Makes Transfer Demand After Juventus’ Champions League Exit


Cristiano Ronaldo is demanding a major overhaul at Juventus, following Tuesday’s shock Champions League defeat against Ajax, Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

Juventus claimed a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam and threw away a lead at home to lose 2-1.

Ronaldo, who won three Champions League titles in succession with Real Madird and appeared in eight consecutive semi-finals, is furious with Juve’s capitulation and unhappy with the rigid tactics employed by manager Max Allegri.

The 34-year-old arrived last summer in a €112million deal and was expected to guarantee the Serie A champions’ quest to win the trophy.

Two English clubs Arsenal and Chelsea have qualified for the semi final stage of the Europa League.
Arsenal booked their place in the last four for the second season running thanks to a 3-0 aggregate win over Napoli.
The Gunners who had won 2-0 in the first leg at the Emirates sealing the job with a 1-0 victory in Thursday’s second leg at the Stadio San Paolo.
Alexandre Lacazette scored the only goal of the night in Naples with a 25-yard free kick past Alex Mere.
Unai Emery’s side saw out the match to make it six clean sheets in seven matches, comfortably setting up a final-four showdown with Valencia in the process.

Jarrell Miller Fails Second Drug Test, Fight With Anthony Joshua Off


Jarrell Miller failed his second drug test, and this led to his fight with Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden on June 1 being called off. The American boxer was expected to fight IBF, WBA, and WBO champion Joshua before an “adverse finding” from a sample taken on March 20.  Miller was denied a licence for the 1 June bout following the findings, and he disclosed that he intends to appeal against the decision to revoke his licence.

Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, who confirmed that Jarrell Miller failed his second drug test stated that the fight was off. “We have now received news from VADA that Jarrell Miller has now failed a second separate test for a further substance. AJ’s June 1 opponent will be announced next week – if you don’t think you can beat him clean then delete my number!” Hearn wrote on Twitter.

He further disclosed that a new opponent for British IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Joshua will be announced next week.

EPL: Sarri reveals Chelsea’s final decision on Olivier Giroud

Chelsea boss, Maurizio Sarri, has revealed that striker Olivier Giroud will stay at the club next season.
This is despite speculations that the star could leave.
The France star’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and rumours had linked him with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Giroud, 32, had recently voiced displeasure over his lack of playing time this season, having only started seven league games this term.
The World Cup winner, in fact, only played two full games in the Premier League, and has seen his game time come in the Europa League and League Cup.

However, Chelsea have a one year option on his contract for next season.
And Sarri confirmed on Friday that the club had decided to take up that option.
“He is sure, because the club has an option for another year, another season,” Sarri told Sky Sports.

“I spoke to the club two days ago and we agreed to exercise the option.”
The Blues are currently preparing to begin a two-window transfer ban by FIFA, prohibiting them from signing any new players until the summer of 2020.
This means that the club is highly unlikely to accept any bid for players unless they have a replacement ready.

Conte takes fresh swipe at Mourinho, reveals next club he will manage

Antonio Conte has called on Jose Mourinho to show more respect after he taunted Juventus’ fans during a Champions League group stage clash earlier this season.

The now former Manchester United manager waved three fingers in the direction of the travelling fans at Old Trafford back in October, to signify the treble he won while in charge of Inter nine years ago.
Conte endured a long-running feud with Mourinho while they were both in Serie A and the animosity continued when the Italian was installed as the Special One’s replacement at Stamford Bridge in 2016.

Referring to Mourinho’s gesture earlier this season, Conte said: “He won the treble [with Inter] and three Premier League titles with Chelsea, so I think he is entitled to do that gesture.
“However, respect is needed. Both from fans and managers. He’s won a lot during his career, and in this gesture, there is everything about Mourinho,” he told talk show, E poi c’è Cattelan.
Conte has enjoyed a season-long sabbatical having been sacked by Chelsea but is set for an imminent return to management.

“I still don’t know where I will go.
“But certainly I’ll choose a team who has a project that convinces me,” he added.

EPL: Solskjaer ready to sell Manchester United striker


Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, will begin a major summer overhaul by dispensing with Romelu Lukaku, the UK Telegraph reports.

Lukaku enjoyed a purple patch early March, scoring six goals in the space of a week, but he has now gone five games without finding the back of the net.
After a record-breaking start to his tenure, Solskjaer has presided over a run of five defeats in seven matches which has seen United crash out of Europe and lose ground in the race for Champions League qualification.

Lukaku, meanwhile, has fallen behind Marcus Rashford in the Norwegian’s pecking order and the manager is not convinced that the 25-year-old possesses the attributes he wants in his attack.
The Belgium striker is said to have attracted interest from Inter, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, while he is open to leaving Old Trafford after just two seasons at the club, during which he has scored 28 Premier League goals from 64 starts.

Superstar footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo has won his first Serie A title since joining Juventus.
The Italian club thrashed their opponent Fiorentina 2-1 to secure an eighth consecutive Serie A title on Saturday night. 
Massimiliano Allegri’s side fell behind to Nikola Milenkovic’s early opener but equalised shortly before half-time through Alex Sandro. The home side sealed victory after the break when Fiorentina’s German Pezzella flicked Ronaldo’s cross into the back of his own net.
 

The Juventus’ league title means Ronaldo, who signed from Real Madrid last summer, has become the first player to win domestic titles in England, Spain and Italy.

Speaking after the title-sealing victory, Ronaldo said: ‘I’m really happy that I have won the Italian title in my first season. ‘Of course, it did not go well in the Champions League, but there is always next year.’ 

On his Instagram page, the Portugal forward added: ‘Champions of Italy!
‘Proud to contribute to this exceptional club, which strongly supported me and for who I am honored to play for. 
‘I’m happy. We dominated a difficult championship, we fought, all together.

Kante warns Chelsea to curb their second half slumps

N’Golo Kante has warned Chelsea to cut out their sloppy second halfs as the Blues look to boost their bid to finish in the Premier League’s top four against Burnley on Monday.
Maurizio Sarri’s side advanced to the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday with a 4-3 win over Slavia Prague.
But what should have been a stroll into the last four after the hosts raced into a 4-1 half-time lead ended up as a tense finish when Chelsea let Slavia score twice early in the second half.


It is not the first time Chelsea have shown a lack of concentration after the interval this term, with Liverpool scoring twice in the second half to beat them 2-0 just days earlier.
Everton did exactly the same in another Chelsea defeat in March and France midfielder Kante admits his team can’t afford to continue that alarming trend if they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish.
Fifth-placed Chelsea are behind fourth placed Arsenal on goal difference, leaving the west Londoners with no margin for error when Burnley visit Stamford Bridge.

That gap will extend to three points if Arsenal beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, while sixth placed Manchester United could also leapfrog the Blues if they win at Everton on Sunday.
Chelsea’s target is to climb above third-placed Tottenham, who are just one point above them and lost to Manchester City on Saturday.
Insisting Chelsea are working to resolve those second half shortcomings, Kante said: “It’s just something that has happened many times this season and something we need to manage a bit better. But we still have to work on that.”
Chelsea are chasing a top four finish, but if they fall short, winning the Europa League would offer a secondary route into the Champions League.


And Kante believes completing that Europa League mission would turn Chelsea’s turbulent first season under Sarri’s leadership into a success.

“We can make the season beautiful by winning the Europa League,” Kante said.


“That’s the only title we can win now, so it would be great to win the Europa League.
“I think at the beginning of the game it was a good feeling to score three goals like this. The most important thing was to qualify.
“We’ll go into the semi-final with confidence and we hope to qualify for the final.”
Chelsea playmaker Eden Hazard should be fit in time for the Burnley clash after coming off against Slavia with a second half knock.
Blues defender Antonio Rudiger is expected to miss out again due to a knee issue.
Burnley head to the Bridge with their Premier League safety almost secured and Clarets boss Sean Dyche is intrigued to see how teenage winger Dwight O’Neil copes with his growing reputation.
O’Neil has been linked with Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle after playing a key role in Burnley’s climb away from the relegation zone.
“He’s certainly in a balanced environment here, where I can’t see him running away with any outside noise,” Dyche said.
“He seems to be quite steady and enjoying his football. That’s what I want him to do, play with a smile on his face and enjoy the challenge.”

At 36, Alves now has 42 trophies following hugely successful spells at European giants Barcelona, Juventus and now PSG.

Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr says two months to the Nations Cup in Egypt is too short a time to experiment with new players.

Rohr who has dismissed insinuations in some quarters that he is under pressure to win a laurel with the team he inherited from former international Sunday Oliseh in 2016, maintained that the devil you know is better than the Angel you know nothing about.

Some analysts had opined that though the Eagles did well in qualifying for the Nations cup without the usual migraine before qualification, the team needs to be given a close look with a view to effecting some changes especially in the goalkeeping area considered a bit shaky.

But in a swift reaction, Rohr told whoever cares to listen that he has decided on the trio of Francis Uzoho, Daniel Akpeyi, and Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

“We have a little challenge because our young goalkeeper Uzoho has not really played at his club this season,” Rohr told BBC Sport.

“Uzoho made one mistake in the last qualifier [against Seychelles] but we gave him a chance with the youth under-23 and it was good for his confidence.

“Daniel Akpeyi is playing now for a big team in South Africa and doing very well. Our third goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa to is good so we can work harder with them.

“We have a good spirit as a team since the World Cup, so there’s no time to bring in new players,” he submitted

Luckily Eagles who got what has been described as soft draw will face two debutants of the Nations cup Burundi and Madagascar with only Guinea expected to pose a bit of a challenge has been to the Nations cup 11 times and posting their best performance in 1976 in Ethiopia where they ended up as runners up to eventual winners Morocco.

The Syli Nationale has also made it to the quarterfinals four times, the latest being at the 2015 edition in Equatorial Guinea.

Incidentally, Eagles were absent in the last two editions and will need to show on the pitch that indeed they are back. All the 24 teams that will battle for honors in Egypt have till June 10th to submit their final 23-man squad.
