Osaze Odemwingie Quits Football

Former Nigerian International, Peter Osaze Odemwingie has announced his retirement from football at UEFA’s Equal Game conference at Wembley yesterday.
The 37-year-old striker, who once plied his trade with West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City in the English Premiership, made his debut for the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles in 2002.
He represented the country over 60 times, including two World Cups and four Africa Cup of Nations, as well as winning a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Aside scoring for Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Odemwingie scored 36 goals in 129 Premier League appearances between 2010 and 2016.
He was the subject of a peculiar story on Deadline Day in January 2013. Believing he was moving to Queens Park Rangers (QPR) from West Brom, the striker drove to Loftus Road, but was refused entry to the stadium after both clubs said no fee had been agreed.
This botched move to QPR saw him falling out of favour with Steve Clarke and was thereafter sold to Cardiff City in August 2013 for a £2.25 million fee. He spent six months at Cardiff before joining Stoke City in a player-exchange with Kenwyne Jones in January 2014.
On his retirement, Odemwingie said: “It’s an emotional day; so many memories go through your head.
“I didn’t know how to do it or where to do it, but I think this is the right place to do it. Wembley is a place with a lot of history in football.”
Odemwingie, whose last professional appearances came for Indonesian side Madura United in 2017, said he intends to embark on a coaching career.
“The next chapter is slowly building up to a coaching career and hopefully I will be coaching in the Premier League one day,” he said
Born on July 15, 1981, Odemwingie played as a forward and winger during his professional career. He grew up in Uzbekistan and Russia and began his playing career with Bendel Insurance in the Nigeria Premier League.
Earning a move to European football with Belgian side, La Louvière, he spent three seasons there before moving on to French side, Lille.
Odemwingie scored 26 goals for Lille, a feat prompted interest from Lokomotiv Moscow that coughed out a £10 million fee for his services in July 2007.
In his three-and-a-half years stint with Lokomotiv, he scored 23 times before leaving for English side West Brom in August 2010.
His sojourn in England saw him scoring 30 Premier League goals for the Baggies and in the process won him three Premier League Player of the Month awards.

Former Premier League striker, Dimitar Berbatov has tipped Lionel Messi led Barcelona to beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United when both sides clash in the Champions League quarter-final first leg tie at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Berbatov, a former Manchester United player, is worried that Messi led Barcelona will “punish” the Red Devils in front of their home fans.
Manchester United reached the Champions League last eight after defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, while Barcelona defeated Lyon.
“I’m concerned by United’s poor form and, if they continue to make mistakes like they have been doing recently, then, let’s face it, they’re going to be punished by Barcelona,” Berbatov told Betfair.
“They are making their lives difficult at the moment and it’s looking tough to make the top four in the Premier League now.
“United went on that incredible undefeated run when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over and this is their first bad patch.
“You know, when you’re winning everything feels natural and good but an important thing is knowing how to react to a defeat. I’m sure Ole knows what to do here and he will have his side fired up and ready for Barca.
“In football sometimes you have that strange thing where a club can falter against small teams but turn it on against big teams. It’s crucial to get motivated for every game, not just the big ones.
“Sir Alex Ferguson sometimes didn’t need to motivate us for the big games, his job and real skill was to motivate us for the small games.
“I admit, Barcelona are the rightful favourites in the tie, but, of course, so were PSG, and nothing is certain in football.
“United can forget their recent form and make a statement here, but – and it’s nothing new or original – they must watch out for that man Messi.”

Real Madrid are hoping to agree a deal with Chelsea to sign Eden Hazard before the end of the season, according to The UK Telegraph.
The Blancos are preparing to make a fresh move for the 28-year-old this week, with the Belgian intent on not signing a new deal with Chelsea.
Chelsea value Hazard at £100 million, but Madrid are hoping to pay closer to £85m.
The 28-year-old wanted to move to the Bernabeu last summer following Belgium’s third place finish at Euro 2018, but Maurizio Sarri convinced him to stay at Stamford Bridge for one more season.
However, Hazard has less than 15 months to run on his existing deal and has made it clear he does not want to sign an extension, despite the Blues offering him around £300,000-a-week.

Lille draw leaves path clear for PSG to clinch French title

Paris Saint-Germain can clinch another Ligue 1 title on Sunday night by beating Strasbourg after nearest rivals Lille were held to a 1-1 draw at Reims.
Jose Fonte’s 56th-minute header had Lille on course to take all three points in Champagne country, but substitute Remi Oudin’s 78th-minute leveller — initially ruled out for offside but then given after a VAR review — denied the visitors.
Reims were also left furious at the referee’s decision to ignore a handball in the box by Lille defender Adama Soumaoro in stoppage time as the home side appealed for a penalty.
The result leaves second-placed Lille a massive 19 points adrift of PSG at the summit, and the capital club will therefore retain the title with eight games to spare if they see off League Cup winners Strasbourg at the Parc des Princes.
PSG are looking to be crowned champions for the eighth time in their history, and the sixth time in seven seasons.
If Thomas Tuchel’s side wrap it up on Sunday night, it will match the club record set in 2015/16, when Laurent Blanc’s team also secured the title with eight matches to play.
Lille, who host PSG next weekend, are more concerned with holding off the teams below them as they look to secure second place, which provides automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League group stage.
The draw at the Stade Auguste-Delaune moves them five points clear of third-placed Lyon, who slumped to a shock 3-1 loss at home to relegation-threatened Dijon on Saturday.
“If we had won I think that we would have sealed our place on the podium,” said Lille coach Christophe Galtier.
“We are 11 points ahead of Saint-Etienne but there are still 21 points to play for.”
Fourth-placed Saint-Etienne drew 2-2 at Amiens on Saturday, while Marseille, in fifth, were beaten 2-0 at Bordeaux on Friday.
Reims are just a point behind OM in sixth place as last season’s second-tier champions continue to enjoy an excellent campaign on their return to the elite.

Paul Pogba and David De Gea are among a seven-strong group, who are considering leaving Manchester United in the summer, The Sunday Times reports.
The mood at Old Trafford has improved since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho, but a number of players are still contemplating exits at the end of the season.
With United not guaranteed to qualify for next year’s Champions League, Pogba and De Gea have both been tempted by approaches from European clubs, with the former interested in a move to Real Madrid.
Zinedine Zidane, who returned to the Bernabeu last month, is a known admirer of Pogba.
United want De Gea to sign a contract extension, but are struggling to reach an agreement with the Spaniard, who is attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Former Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte has disclosed that he will first sign Manchester United striker, Romelu Lukaku once he becomes Inter Milan’s new coach at the end of the season.
Conte, who has been out of a job since being sacked by Chelsea in July 2018, is set to take over from current Inter boss, Luciano Spalletti this summer.
La Repubblica reports that Conte is already drawing up a list of potential transfer targets and has identified Lukaku as the player on his top target ahead of the 2019/20 season.
Speaking on Lukaku’s future at Man United earlier this week, the player’s agent, Federico Pastorello told Sky Sports that the Belgium international likes Italy, adding that he is someone who loves to know different cultures and like to have a career playing in different countries.
Pastorello said: “Let’s see what will happen in the future at the end the season. It’s his second season here and he will still have three years on his contract until the end. Let’s see.
“He’s someone who loves to know a different culture, a different football.
“He sees a way to have a career playing in different countries because he would like to win some trophies and prove himself and say to his children “I won there and I won there and I won there” and “I was a very good player in all the top championships” so let’s see.”
Pastorello added: “The future is really very open but, at the moment, we don’t discuss about that because really the season is in a big moment.
“He likes Italy. When he was a child he followed a lot the Italian league.”

“We know we needed to be strong and solid, and to be competitive. After the negative result after the first half we changed things defensively and it gave us better options for 45 minutes but we could not find a goal.
“If we scored then it would have changed the match but defensively we conceded more chances than what we were doing first half,” Emery told Sky Sports.

Gabriel Jesus’ early-headed goal was enough for quadruple-chasing Manchester City to beat Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 on Saturday and reach the FA Cup final.
Back at the scene of their League Cup triumph over Chelsea, Pep Guardiola’s side were not at their regular best against a Brighton side with their minds still on top-flight survival.
It took City three minutes to go ahead at a less-than-full Wembley, with Jesus diving full length to connect with Kevin De Bruyne’s superb whipped cross.
Whatever game-plan Brighton boss, Chris Hughton, had devised to stop a relentless City side was presumably now in tatters, but the expected onslaught did not materialise.
City had a let-off when Kyle Walker was perhaps fortunate not to get a red card in the first half, following a clash with Alireza Jahanbakhsh and they never looked totally secure as Brighton caused problems.
There were not too many major alarms, however, as City claimed their 21st win from their last 23 matches in all competitions.
They will play the winners of Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers who meet in the second semi-final on Sunday.
City lost the Premier League top spot to Liverpool on Friday, although they are only two points adrift with a game in hand. They face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Aguero sustained an injury in his side’s Premier League win over Fulham few days ago, while Walker was taken off at half-time during City’s FA Cup semi-final 1-0 win over Brighton last weekend and Mendy had a long-term knee problem.
Speaking ahead of Man City’s Champions League clash with Tottenham, Guardiola told the club’s official website that the trio will be assessed after this afternoon’s open training session, but believes they should be fit enough to face Spurs.

Crystal Palace forward, Wilfried Zaha has dismissed reports linking him with a move away from his club to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United this summer.
Zaha has drawn interest from Man United following the appointment of Solskjaer as United’s new permanent coach.
The Ivory Coast international has, however, said that his “future is at Crystal Palace”.
Speaking on Man United’s interest, Sky Sports News quoted Zaha as saying: “My future is at Palace. I am at Palace, I am not thinking about anything [else].
“I’m just playing my football and I will just see what the future holds for me.”
Zaha has eight goals and eight assists in 29 Premier League games for Crystal Palace so far this season.
The 26-year-old moved to Man United from Crystal Palace in 2013 but made just four appearances for the Red Devils before returning to Selhurst Park.

Chelsea star, Eden Hazard, is optimistic that they can win the Europa League this season and also finish in the Premier League’s top four.
Hazard stated this while speaking to the media, following their 2-0 win over West Ham on Monday night.
The three points took Chelsea into third place, above London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
When asked what his side’s chances are on the continent and domestically, Hazard replied: “We are Chelsea, we can do everything.”
Maurizio Sarri’s men travel to Slavia Prague in the Europa League on Thursday, before facing Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday in the league.

Chelsea forward, Eden Hazard, has overtaken Juventus star, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Premier League goal record.
Hazard scored two brilliant goals on Monday to secure Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over West Ham.
Ronaldo, however, played fewer games than Hazard to achieve the feat.
While Ronaldo scored 84 goals in 196 games, Hazard played 240 games for Chelsea scoring 85 goals to beat the Portuguese’s record.
The Belgian’s first goal last night was his 84th in the Premier League which put him level with Ronaldo 84 goals during his time at Manchester United.
Hazard, however, overtook Ronaldo’s record and capped his fine performance with a late goal to secure Chelsea’s 2-0 win.
The victory over the Hammers also took Chelsea up to third in the Premier League, although Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United have all played one game less than the Blues.

Chelsea star, Danny Drinkwater, was taken to a police station on Monday after the Range Rover vehicle he was driving hit a Skoda.
The Sun reports that the midfielder crashed his Range Rover into a Skoda car at approximately 12.30am, hours before Chelsea’s Premier League 2-0 victory over West Ham United at Stamford Bridge.
The report claimed that the player and solicitor, Beth Mantel had attended a charity event in an upmarket bar called Victors in Hale, Greater Manchester, approximately six miles away from his house.
The crash left debris scattered across the country road while a fence was also flattened.
Speaking on the incident, The Sun quoted a source as saying: “It was a really nasty crash. Danny had been seen having a great night at the bar but it ended horribly. Pieces of the car he hit went flying.”
“Danny’s been partying like mad recently but hopefully this will be a wake-up call telling him to slow down.”
Confirming the incident to reporters, Cheshire Police said: “A 29-year-old man from Nether Alderley was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He is currently in custody assisting officers with their inquiries.”
Drinkwater joined Chelsea in a £35million deal last summer from Leicester City.
The 29-year-old has fallen out of favour at Chelsea since manager, Maurizio Sarri, took over from fellow Italian, Antonio Conte.
The England international has barely featured for Sarri’s side so far this campaign.
Sarri had already disclosed that he is willing to let Drinkwater go out on loan if a club comes for him.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s Manchester United have received a major boost as the likes of Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez returned to training ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Barcelona on Wednesday night.
Rashford sustained an ankle injury a few weeks ago. The England international missed Man United’s Premier League 2-1 defeat to Wolves last week Tuesday.
Sanchez had a long-term knee problem. The Chilean international sustained the injury in Man United’s Premier League win over Southampton a few weeks ago.
Mirror UK is now reporting that Rashford did some light jogging and stretching with one of United’s physios, before joining the main team and taking part in the full squad warm up, while Sanchez also took part in the full squad warm up.
Man United reached the Champions League last eight after beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 in the round of 16 second-leg encounter, while Barcelona defeated Lyon 5-1.

Barcelona strikers, Lionel Messi, and Luis Suarez, who are currently the best pair in Spanish football have scored more La Liga goals this season than 18 of the 19 teams they have faced.
With Barcelona sitting 11 points ahead ofAtletico Madrid, they have scored 81 goals in just 31 games, 26 more than Real Madrid and 53 of those have come from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
The Argentinian has scored 33 times with his Uruguayan partner netting 20 so far for himself.
This means the pair have scored more between them than 18 of the 19 teams they have faced this campaign.

Chelsea midfielder, Danny Drinkwater has been charged with drink-driving after he crashed his car minutes after leaving a party early on Monday morning.
According to Mail Online, the former Leicester star crashed his Range Rover into a Skoda at approximately 12.30am, hours before the Blues 2-0 win over West Ham at Stamford Bridge. The crash left debris scattered across the country road while a fence was also flattened.
Drinkwater who was traveling with solicitor Beth Mantel at that time were both treated for minor injuries along with Emma Brown, 30, who was driving the Skoda.

'He has been released on unconditional bail and is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on Monday 13 May.'

After 14 years, Tiger Woods wins 2019 Masters, his first major championship since 2008 (Photos)

In an epic for the ages, Tiger Woods reached the pinnacle of his return to the game by winning his fifth green jacket and 15th major championship today April 14th in the 83rd edition of the Masters.
Staring at the abyss just two years ago when he was bedridden and thinking his career was over due to a painfully disorderly back, Woods was stoic and steady throughout the week at Augusta National Golf Club despite the roars echoing through the Georgia pines.
With a final-round 2-under-par 70 in his Sunday red mock turtleneck, Woods won on these hallowed grounds for the first time since 2005. It also marked his first triumph in a major championship since the 2008 U.S. Open.

Starting the day two shots behind leader Francesco Molinari, Woods finished at 13 under par and one shot ahead of Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka. When his final putt dropped on 18, Woods gave a fist pump with his right hand then lifted both arms overhead in joy.
After sharing a hug with his caddie, Joe LaCava, Woods found his son, Charlie, who ran up and gave dad a big hug, followed by Tiger's mom, Kultida, his daughter, Sam, and girlfriend, Erica Herman.

"It’s come full circle. My dad was here in '97 and now I'm the dad with two kids here," Woods said. About thirty minutes after his final putt, Woods said the monumental win had not sunk in yet. "You couldn't have had more drama than what we had out there. Now I know why I'm balding," he joked. "This stuff is hard."

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri has said the Premier League title race is too close to call.
According to the Italian, the difference between Liverpool and Manchester City will be a maximum of two points.
Pep Guardiola’s side briefly moved to the top of the table with a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace earlier on Sunday, but Liverpool retook the lead with their 2-0 win against Chelsea at Anfield.
Goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were enough for Jurgen Klopp’s side to put the pressure back on City, who still have one game in hand over their rivals.
Asked who he thinks will win the title after Chelsea’s defeat to Liverpool, Sarri told Sky Sports: “It’s very difficult to say.
“Probably it will depend on a post in or a post out.
“It’s so close. The difference will be one or two points, no more.”
