Rotimi Akeredolu – APC
The incumbent governor is seeking re-election under the banner of the APC. He had earlier served the state as attorney-general and was also a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Mr Akeredolu hailed from Owo in Ondo North Senatorial District where he had his primary education. He attended Aquinas College in Akure, Loyola College in Ibadan, and the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) where he took his law degree.
Mr Akeredolu first ran for governor in 2012 as the flagbearer of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), one of the parties that fused into the APC in 2014.
He ran at that time against the then governor Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party (LP), and Olusola Oke of the PDP.
Mr Akeredolu finished as second runners-up with 143,512 votes behind Mr Oke who polled 155,961 votes and Mr Mimiko who won with 260,199 votes.
In 2016, Mr Akeredolu ran again under the APC and won.
He earlier had issues with many of his party’s leaders, including those in a faction – Unity Forum – headed by a former deputy governor, Ali Olanusi, believed to have been formed to thwart Mr Akeredolu’s reelection ambition.
Mr Akeredolu and his deputy also had issues which led to the exit of Agboola Ajayi from APC.
Lemme book space.
Op, change the map of Ondo to this, it clearly showed the senatorial district
Eyitayo Jegede – PDP
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria hails from Akure, the capital of the state, in Ondo Central senatorial district.
He was the Chancellor of Anglican Communion of Jalingo, Taraba State. Mr Jegede is also a former Chancellor of Anglican Dioceses of Yola and a member of the Implementation Committee of the American University, Yola, Adamawa State, as well as a member, Chairman Board of Governors, ABTI Academy International School and member, Board of Trustees, Elizade University, Ilara Mokin, Ondo State.
In May 2009, Mr Mimiko appointed him as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State.
There were disputes around his candidacy in 2016 but the court resolved them in his favour a few days to the election, which he lost to Mr Akeredolu of the APC.
Mr Jegede is one of the most popular candidates and has vowed to defeat other contestants.
Agboola Ajayi – ZLP
Agboola Ajayi is a popular grassroots politician who has been in the game since the 80s under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), PDP and APC.
The lawyer and businessman was the chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area between 2004 and 2007.
He was later elected to the House of Representatives to represent Ilaje/Ese-Odo federal constituency under the PDP.
At the green chamber, Mr Ajayi was chairman of the house committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) between 2007 and 2010.
He also served as a member of many other committees, including gas, habitat, justice and industry between 2007 and 2011.
The Ese-Odo born politician in Ondo South dumped PDP for APC to run as the runningmate to Mr Akeredolu in the November 26, 2016 governorship election which they won.
But they fought in the buildup to the 2020 election, following which Mr Ajayi joined the PDP. But he left the PDP a month after following his defeat in the party’s governorship primary. He switched camp to the ZLP with the support of former governor Olusegun Mimiko. He also survived attempts by the state’s lawmakers to impeach him after his defection from the APC.

Ondo guber: Boat conveying election materials capsizes in Ilaje
A boat conveying electoral materials and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State has been involved in mishap.
DAILY POST gathered that the boat capsized on its way to deliver voting materials to polling units in the Ilaje area.
However, no one died as all the passengers were put on life jackets while onboard.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tee-Leo Ikoro confirmed the incident.
He stated that the development won’t affect the election.
He maintained that the materials were also not affected.
BREAKING: Ondo decides 2020: Sporadic shooting in polling unit
As voting begins in the ongoing governorship election in Ondo State, sporadic shootings have been reported in a polling unit.
The incident occurred at Pollíng Unit 11, Edo Lodge in Oke Ijebu, Akure.
Confirming the shooting, the State Police spokesman, Tee-Lee Ikoro said operatives have been deployed to the affected area.
Ikoro disclosed that Mobile Police operatives were deployed to ensure the protection of voters at the scene.
Ondo guber: Early arrival of materials, as voters partially observe COVID-19 protocols (PHOTOS)
Across polling units in Ondo North Senatorial District, there was early arrival of electoral materials as voters trooped out to cast their ballot.
Also, the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as well as security operatives are already on ground.
The early morning showers could not deter the voters who adhered partially to the COVID-19 protocols.
In some of the units in Akoko South West and Akoko North East, materials arrived as early as 8:25 am, with enthusiasm seen on the faces of the electorate as they exercised their franchise.
Meanwhile, there was COVID-19 compliance among the voters as regards the use of face mask but physical distance was not observed.
Also, hand sanitizers were made available by INEC officials at the polling units.
Ondo guber: Residents flout IGP’s order
As electorates in Ondo State decide today on who will pilot the affairs of the State for the next four years, the restriction order is being flouted.
In Akure, the Ondo State capital, aside the vehicles deployed for election duty, taxis, private vehicles as well as commercial motorcycles, popularly known as ‘Okada’ were seen moving about.
Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Adamu had ordered the restriction of vehicular movement from 12 am to 6 pm on Saturday.
DAILY POST gathered that from Oba-Ile axis of Akure North Local Government to the popular Oba-Adesida part of Akure South Local Government the order is not being obeyed.
Meanwhile, within the Akure metropolis, as at press time, there is no much presence of security operatives roving through the roads.
Electorates in Ondo State will today, Saturday, October 10, 2020, go to polling centres across the 18 local government areas in the state to elect their governor for the next four years.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had in August published the names of 17 governorship candidates and their running mates with their political parties for today’s poll.
However, political observers believe that battle over who emerges governor of the state is clearly between incumbent Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress, APC; candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Eyitayo Jegede, and Agboola Ajayi, candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP.
Mr. Ajayi, a former member of the ruling APC and incumbent Deputy Governor, is battling for the state’s number one position with his boss, Governor Akeredolu.
There have been reports of violence and killings with continued clashes between supporters of the APC and PDP, being the two leading political parties ahead of today’s election.
Follow this thread for updates of results and incidents from different polling units in the state.
DAILY POST is currently in the Sunshine State and brings you live updates, results, situation reports from the governorship election.

Quote:Ondo Election: Eyitayo Jegede Protests, Says INEC Creating Problem
Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Ondo governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of “creating a problem”.
He, however, said despite the hitches, he would win.
Before he eventually voted, Smart Card Reader could not read his card and he was asked to step aside for other voters to vote.
Smart Card Reader could not also read PVC of Eno, Jegede’s wife but his daughter voted without any hitch.
The machine had worked perfectly until when Jegede and the wife were to cast their votes.
After about 10 minutes, Jegede and his wife voted about 11:10 am, after the machine was rectified.
Speaking to newsmen after voting, Jegede accused INEC of creating a problem, saying the commission should be asked why the card reader stopped functioning when it was his turn to vote.
He said, “INEC is creating a problem. Their machine stopped working when it was my turn to vote. I had to protest and they said the machine was rectified. But despite all these hitches, there has not been major disruption. But I don’t know what is happening in remote areas.
“The turnout has been massive, voters conducted themselves well. I am aware that there is pocket of violence in Ijomu area.
“I also heard of an incident of vote-buying.”

#Ondodecides: I was not injured at polling centre- Governor Akeredolu’s wife says
Wife of Ondo Governor, Mrs. Betty Akeredolu, has denied reports claiming she was attacked and injured when she went to cast her votes with her husband, Rotimi kAkeredolu, at Polling Unit 6, Ward 5 at Isokub in the Ijebu Owo area of the state today October 10.
Dismissing the report, Mrs. Akeredolu who spoke at her home in Owo, said the video was meant to damage the voting exercise, distort information and put it in a bad light.
Quote:“That is insane, that is absurd. That tells you how desperate people can be in politics or our political landscape. I am here in the ambience of my country home and somebody is there doctoring video that I was injured.
Were you the one that injured me? Such desperation will not do any good to them. The detractors want to damage the exercise, to distort information and put one on a bad light. It is all false. We will emerge victorious.”
