Quote:How I Trapped Her – Gracious West, Rivers Serial Killer Narrates
.A suspected serial killer, alleged to have killed a lady in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has been apprehended.
There has been recent spike in dead of young women in hotels around the oil-rich state.
Most of the victims found dead had their hands and legs tied together, leading to circumstances believed to be hallmark of serial killing.
However, one of the serial killer ran out of luck when he was napped while heading to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital from the Rivers.
Gracious West was arrested along East-West road while fleeing from the state to its neighboring counterpart.
Mr West who was interrogated by Mustapha Dandaura, Rivers Police Commissioner, narrated how he trapped his victim.
“We were inside the club then we discussed on how much I will pay her. After that we left the club to the hotel at Osas Road,” Mr West, 26, said in a one minute thirty seconds video shared publicly by the Police on its Twitter handle.
“When we got there, they took her up and I said let me look for a way to arrange for food that we will both eat,” he added even as he could not remember the hotel’s name but said it’s located around Rumuola where a lady was reportedly killed on Sunday.
“After eating, we slept till the next morning around 5:30am. I brought out a knife. She was unaware there was a knife. So, I told her not to shout that if she does I will use the knife on her.
“Out of fear she kept quite. During that time the television volume was loud. Then I used the wrapper to tie her hands her legs from the back,” and when asked which wrapper, West answered, “I used pillow case.”
The police command is expected to address the public on Friday.

Suspected Port Harcourt says killings started in Lagos
20 September

Suspected Port Harcourt serial killer Gracious David West has told the Nigerian police that he got money to fund his operation from his first victim in Lagos where he started killing.
"I started the killing in Lagos, that was where I got money because the first girl had N52,000 in her account," West told the police.
"After that, I went to Port Harcourt, then Owerri. I returned to Port Harcourt. The last girl I killed I met her at the club."
He confessed to killing five girls in Port Harcourt, seven in Owerri and three in Lagos.
West said he was on his way to Akwa-Ibom when he was arrested by operatives of the special anti-robbery squad, Bori in Rivers.
He said the urge of killing comes to him like hunger which leaves him with no other option than to carry out his action on his victims.
"When the urge comes, I move into a hotel, invite a girl after and after eating and making love, I will bring out a kitchen knife and threaten her not to shout," West said.
26-year-old West, whom the police said is a cultist, was arrested on Wednesday on East-West Road en route to Uyo from Port Harcourt.
West said in a video the Nigerian police posted0 to its official Twitter handle he had transactional sex with a nameless victim. Hours later, the victim was killed.
He said he used pillowcases to tie a victim before she was allegedly killed in a hotel room in Rukpokwu, about 18 kilometers from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital city.
Although the video did not contain West's explicit admission of the crime, the Nigerian police, however, tagged the video "confession of a serial killer."
“We went to the hotel,” West said in the confessional video. “I paid for the place. So they took her up [to the room].”
He said he ordered for food to be prepared for him and the victim after which they “slept,”, which seemed to be a euphemism for having sex.
The crime, he told the police, was committed in the early hours of the following morning.
“Around that 5:30 am - let’s say 4 or 5:30 - I brought out a knife and now threatened her.
“With that fear, she couldn’t shout. By then, the television...the volume was loud. So she kept quiet. After that, I used the wrapper to tie her hands at the back and then tie her legs.”
When asked by his interrogator, who was off the camera what sort wrapper he used, West said he did not use a wrapper but pillowcases.
“Investigation is on with a view to ascertaining his motives and possible accomplices,” police said on Thursday evening.
He started the killing in Lagos, proceeded to PortHarcourt, Owerri, and was on his way to Akwa- Ibom when he was arrested by operatives of the special anti-robbery squad, Bori in Rivers.

Hassan Aliyu gives an update, reports from the Police headquaters Rivers State:
In days to come more information about the killers saga and the names he mentioned shall be made known to the public by CP Dandaura Rivers State.
IN HIS WORDS HE STATED: "I was a committed member of the Deygbam Confranternity which I later denounced and joined the OPM Rehabilitation home before I left for Salvation ministries who refused to give me an accommodation."
"I have made lots of money from robbing my victims of their valuables, such as phones, jewellery which I sell them after killing the ladies, few times they had raw cash on them, I make them give me their ATM pin, with which I withdraw cash from after killing them."
"Whenever I need blood I enter the road looking for girls willing to accept cash for short time with me, I offer 100k to 200k to persuade them.
Sometimes I call them much later to try my luck some will accept to follow me."
CP Dan Daura:
"It was easier to trap him because of the repeated cloths, he pays the hotels to launder it for him, when it is returned, he proceeds to kill the girls while tying towel, before changing to his clothes and leaving.
In the case of the girl found in the wardrobe, he killed her before his clothes were returned, that is why he hid her body in the wardrobe for fear of room service seeing the corpse. The one he hid under the bed at Owerri, he hid her under the bed because room service was due for cleanup any minute.
His homelessness frustrated him alot so he lives from hotel to hotel, state to state.
He has given us names, the names which will be trail from today, releasing such sensitive information will not help the investigation.
He made use of the pillow cases as he threatens the girls with the knife to cooperate, that he wants to tie them up, rob them and leave. They comply, and allows them tie them up, their hands, legs and mouth, while the TV volume is high. After restraining them and getting their pin, he proceeds to kill them by using the 4th torn bedsheet to stangle them.
Actually he killed all the girls and described in details how he killed each of them. He will be taken round town to confirm the hotels he stayed in as he has forgotten most of the names.
The other suspects in custody were arrested before they arrested him, and he confessed.
The various hotels that dumped bodies of the victims far away from their hotels such as Odili road and Waterlines, will be brought to book.
Henceforth the police has mandated hotel owners to instal CCTV cameras and carefully do a thorough checks of room because in some of the hotels he lodged, he confessed to the receptionists not asking for identification, and instead money to process the lease of the room.
He was caught with the phone of the last victim on him as well as her money. He was running to Uyo and was accosted in an AKTC vehicle along East West road, when the CP sent out an SOS based on the CCTV footage released by the hotel. And he was wearing the same outfit he wore on the CCTV camera"

Serial killing: We’ll defend ourselves with pepper spray – Rivers State sex workers
As the Rivers State Police Command continues the manhunt for more serial killers of young women in hotels, some commercial sex workers in Port Harcourt have decided to get pepper spray to ward off attackers.
The commercial sex workers explained that since they were not ready to leave their trade, they were also not prepared to be victims of serial killers, who had been on the prowl in the state since July this year.
Last week, police arrested the prime suspect behind the serial killing of young women in some hotels in the state, Gracious David West, who confessed to the crime.
Asked why the news of serial killers on the prowl had not stopped them from the trade, one of them, who gave her name simply as Stacy, told Southern City News
Quote:that she and some of her colleagues had decided to get pepper spray to attack any man that would come after their lives in hotel rooms.
“I have been in this trade for a long time and when we began to hear about the killings of girls in hotels, some of us agreed to be moving with pepper spray. We will apply the pepper spray on them if they come to kill us,” she said.
Another commercial sex worker, who gave her name simply as Sabina, said she was not moved by the news of the serial killers, adding that she had plans to begin to mix pepper with water and put in a small bottle. “With the small bottle, I can target the eyes of the bad man. I cannot allow anybody to use me for rituals. With pepper in his eyes, I will shout and people will come to see what is happening,” Sabina stated.
But another sex worker, who gave her name as Miracle, told Southern City News that she had decided not to follow any man, who offers to pay more than the normal, adding that men, who were into ritual killings, always promise to pay higher for a night.
“The normal charge for a night is between N6,000 and N7,000. But if someone comes to me and says ‘I will give you N30,000 for a night’, definitely, I will not follow the person. Which man will pay a sex worker N30,000 for a night if he is not planning evil?” Miracle queried.
However, another call girl, who said she returned from Ghana last year, said though she had never gone to hotels with her patrons, the news about the killings of young women in hotel rooms had reinforced her belief that it was senseless following a man to his hotel room for sex till the following morning.
On how she manages to make money without following men to hotels, the young woman, who refused to identify herself, said she usually takes any willing man to the place (pointing at a place by her side around Casablanca), where they would have sex between 30 minutes and one hour. “I don’t follow men to hotels. Again, with this news about the killings of women in hotels, I will never follow any man to a hotel, no matter the amount he is willing to pay,” she stressed.
