Quote:Steven Gerrard Leads Rangers To Their First Scottish Title In 10 Years

Rangers are Scottish champions for the first time in 10 years after Celtic drew 0-0 with Dundee United.

Steven Gerrard's side, who beat St Mirren 3-0 on Saturday, have a 20-point lead with six games remaining.

It is former Liverpool and England captain Gerrard's first trophy as a manager in his third season at Ibrox, and ends Celtic's bid for an unprecedented 10th successive crown.

It is the earliest Scottish title win in chronological terms.

Rangers have dropped just eight points in an unbeaten league campaign so far, with their victory on Saturday their 28th win in 32 matches.

They have scored 77 goals and conceded just nine - only two of which have been at Ibrox.

The Glasgow club were in the bottom tier of Scottish football as recently as 2012 after their financial collapse, and returned to the top flight five years ago.

Rangers' first game as champions will be the third Old Firm game of the campaign at Celtic Park on March 21.

Manchester City's run of 21 successive victories is over as Manchester United beat them 2-0 at the Etihad

Manchester City's 21 game unbeaten streak was struck out by their eternal rivals, Manchester United.

On Sunday night, March 7, Bruno Fernandes and a man of the match performance from Luke Shaw was enough to see off premier league table leaders Manchester City .

United claimed a famous and surprising win and continued their run away from home to an impressive 22 league games unbeaten. More importantly they returned to second in the table, bolstering their hopes of claiming Champions League qualification and also set a standard they have to maintain if they are going to challenge next season.

United may not be closing the gap on City just yet – even if it is now down to 11 points - but taking four points this season from the leading team should be some encouragement with several outstanding performances led by Anthony Martial, and Luke Shaw who scored their second goal in front of England manager Gareth Southgate.

Few minutes into the game,  Gabriel Jesus bundled Martial in the area and the referee couldn't avoid giving out a penalty.

Fernandes who has been criticized lately for not playing well against the big six club's, drove the ball to Ederson’s right.

The goalkeeper got a hand to it but could not keep it out and Fernandes had his second goal of the season – and his second penalty – in ‘Big Six’ encounters.

The goal also meant it was the first time that City had been behind in a Premier League game since November 2020, precisely 20 matches ago.

Moments later, United could have had a second goal when Joao Cancelo lost the ball inside his own area only for Shaw to take a shot straight at Ederson.

Shaw was overlapping, Martial was holding up play perfectly and City's midfield controlled by De Bruyne and Gundogan we're finding it hard to control proceedings.

It was not until mid-way through the first-half that City started pressing United back.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told his side to press even higher in order to stifle City and it was working.

Dean Henderson, brought in to replace De Gea who had traveled to Spain to witness his child's birth, beat out a shot from Oleksandr Zinchenko and City asked for a penalty when Raheem Sterling was bundled by Fred but the referee was having none of it.

Halftime: Man City 0 - 1 Man.U

In the second half City resumed with more purpose and started pressing but what came next even Pep Guardiola didn't expect it.

Gabriel Jesus laid Mahrez’s pass back into the path of Rodri whose side-footed shot from 18 yards struck the top of the cross-bar.

Henderson then threw the ball out to Shaw who chested it past Cancelo before running forward and passing to Rashford in the eighteen yard box.

Rashford returned the ball and Shaw’s low shot beat Ederson and found the corner of the net.

Man City 0- 2 Man United.

It was almost a third as Martial got Fernandes’ looping cross only to fail to get enough power in his diving header with Ederson grabbing the ball.

Sterling shot high over and then Shaw superbly blocked Jesus as he planned to shoot after De Bruyne attacked.

United went close again when Scott McTominay was brought down but play continued with the ball falling to Martial.

Martial one on one with Ederson, couldn't beat the goalkeeper, who saved the shot.

It was a terrible miss as Martial had to score.

In one of City's most potent strikes going forward, De Bruyne passed to substitute Phil Foden who collected it, turned round and shot, but it went wide .

City pounced and pounced but United held them, earning a clean sheet as well as a deserved victory.

Manchester United are now 11 points behind City.

Quote:EPL: This Is The Lowest Point Of My Career – Klopp

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, has admitted this is the lowest point of his managerial career.

Mario Lemina’s goal for Fulham, inflicted a sixth straight home defeat on the Premier League champions on Sunday.

It represents the Reds’ worst run in the club’s history.

“My boys wanted it. Believe me, they want to win games. I see how much it hurts. It’s easy to judge it that way because Fulham won, so you say they wanted it more.

“But I don’t think that’s the problem. I don’t have to stand here and say we’re fighting for this or that,” Klopp said.

When asked if it was one of the lowest points in his managerial reign, he replied: “I would wish to say no but yes it is.

“That’s not a problem. I don’t always have to have the best times. This team is an extreme team. We were extremely successful and now we have an extreme situation as well but we will fight through.”

Tottenham 4-1 Crystal Palace: Bale and Kane at the double as Spurs move into top six

[Image: gareth-bale-celebrates-against-palace_51...uality=100]

Gareth Bale continued his recent goalscoring run with a brace matched by Harry Kane in Tottenham's 4-1 Premier League win at home to Crystal Palace.

Loan star Bale had netted just four times in his first 16 games back at Spurs, but his double on Sunday took his tally to six across his subsequent six appearances.

Kane assisted both goals, either side of a Christian Benteke header that only briefly pegged Jose Mourinho's men back, before the England captain added a sensational third and then the fourth for a double of his own.

Son Heung-min laid on the striker's second for the pair's 14th goal combination of the campaign, a new Premier League record, as a third straight victory took Tottenham into the top six.

The star of the show from the outset, Bale had already crafted a clear opening for Son, nodded wastefully straight at Vicente Guaita, when he netted the opener after 25 minutes.

Lucas Moura led the Spurs press and pinched the ball from Luka Milivojevic before feeding Kane, who drilled in a low centre that found Bale with an open goal and a simple finish.

Unfortunately for Tottenham, Benteke was clinical from Palace's very first attempt on the stroke of half-time as he directed Milivojevic's left-wing cross into the top-right corner with a thumping header.

But Bale picked out the same corner at the same end four minutes after the restart, climbing highest when Kane nodded Sergio Reguilon's delivery back across goal.
Following two assists, Kane then supplied the pick of the goals, a first-time effort from 20 yards that flew over Guaita's head just 138 seconds after he had last been beaten.

Wilfried Zaha, returning from injury as a half-time substitute, was unfortunate to strike the post with a left-footed shot, but Palace were soon picked apart again as a gorgeous Erik Lamela pass teed up Son's volleyed cross onto the waiting head of Kane.

What does it mean? Spurs spoiled for choice

Even in this stunning attacking display, Son missed the chance to cut his Premier League goal drought short. He has now not scored in the competition in a month.
Meanwhile, the resurgent Dele Alli, a starter at Fulham in midweek, did not even make it off the bench.

As Tottenham look to close on the top four while continuing their Europa League run, such depth will surely be key.

Bale back to his best

As well as netting a brace, Bale created four chances for team-mates. Only four times in his entire Premier League career has the winger scored at least twice while also playing four or more key passes.

Kane still the main man

This was Bale's night, but Kane still had a hand in all four goals. His 40 goal involvements in all competitions this term is the most among all Premier League players.

A pair of assists saw his season tally swell to 13, while he became the first Spurs player to score two or more and create two or more in the same game since Jurgen Klinsmann against Wimbledon in May 1998.

Key Opta Facts

- Only league leaders Manchester City (35) have earned more points at home in this season's Premier League than Tottenham (24).
- Tottenham's fourth goal was their 100th in all competitions this season, becoming the second club in Europe's big-five leagues to reach that tally in 2020-21, after Bayern Munich (106).
- Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has failed to win all six of his Premier League meetings with Spurs' Jose Mourinho (D3 L3), the joint-most he has faced a particular manager in the competition without yet winning (level with Jurgen Klopp).

- Palace's goal was from their very first shot of the match, and their only shot on target.
- Tottenham's Gareth Bale has scored in each of his last three home appearances in all competitions, the first time he has done so since September 2018 for Real Madrid (four in a row), and first time for Spurs since May 2013.

What's next?

Mourinho described a "very, very hard" month for Tottenham ahead of this match, but they are at home again on Thursday, hosting Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League. Palace welcome West Brom in the league on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid: Benzema leaves it late as leaders' wait for Derbi win goes on

[Image: karim-benzema-slides-in-the-equaliser_p7...uality=100]

Karim Benzema's late equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw for Real Madrid at rivals Atletico Madrid and extended their unbeaten run in El Derbi to 10 LaLiga matches.

Atleti are the side in the ascendancy in Spain's top flight this season, but they have been second best in their own city in recent years and could not end a poor sequence in this fixture on Sunday.

Luis Suarez's 10th league strike against Madrid had appeared enough for a precious victory, yet missed chances came back to bite Diego Simeone's men as the long-serving Atleti coach was denied a club-record 309th win in the job.

Benzema, fit again to captain the side, marked his 371st LaLiga appearance – a record among Madrid's non-Spanish players – with an 88th-minute leveller to maintain the champions' interest in the title race.
Madrid stay third, five points behind Atleti, but Barcelona – winners against Osasuna on Saturday – are now within three of the leaders, who have one win in five in all competitions.

While Madrid have a hold over their neighbours, no player has scored more league goals against Los Blancos than Suarez since he moved to Spain in 2014 and the Uruguayan made the most of the game's first chance of note after 15 minutes.

Marcos Llorente beat Nacho on halfway and advanced to slide through a pass that met the well-timed run of Suarez, who shaped a fine low finish around Thibaut Courtois.

The first half was otherwise short of goalmouth action, although Madrid's appeals for handball by Felipe prompted a VAR review shortly before the break, only for referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez to stick with his original decision rather than awarding a penalty.

Courtois twice came to Lucas Vazquez's rescue at the start of the second period as he was exposed up against Yannick Carrasco, brilliantly blocking from both the rampaging winger and Suarez.

It appeared as though the brilliance of Atleti's own goalkeeper would ensure those stops would not scar the hosts as Jan Oblak stood tall to save from Benzema twice in quick succession and then parried clear the same man's free-kick.
But there was still time for Benzema to have the final say, granted an empty net when Casemiro squared in front of Oblak after Suarez had lost the ball up the field.

What does it mean? Simeone's side stalling as big two close gap

Since the start of February, Atletico have taken just nine points from six matches. In the same spell, Barcelona and Madrid have played the same number of fixtures and claimed 16 and 14 points respectively.

Comfortable a month ago, Simeone's side are now very much in a title race.

This looked like being a deserved victory that would set them back on course, but they ceded control in the closing stages and were eventually outshot 18-11, with Oblak required to make seven saves.

Keepers and number nines sublime

When Atleti led with two minutes to play, Suarez and Oblak were set to be the heroes, with the former Barca star having six attempts and creating one more as his team-mate at the other end seemingly ensured his solitary strike would be enough.

Instead, Benzema and Courtois were the men celebrating come full-time. Courtois made only four saves, but they came at crucial times, while Benzema finally got the better of Oblak with the last of his eight efforts.

Madrid escape despite defensive issues

Injuries have hampered Madrid's season and the absence of Dani Carvajal, an experienced, natural right-back, looked as though it would prove costly on Sunday.

Atleti directed 41.5 per cent of their attacks down the left flank, where Vazquez was situated, and they were well on top at the start of the second half despite Madrid dominating possession.

The decision to replace Carrasco, who had created two chances as well as drawing a save from Courtois, was a peculiar one and it did not pay off.

What's next?

Atleti play their game in hand in LaLiga at home to Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, while Madrid are not in action again until Saturday when they host Elche.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 'set to come out of retirement at 39' to represent Sweden at the Euros

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is reportedly set to come out of international retirement to play for Sweden.

The 39-year-old AC Milan striker hasn't represented his country since Euro 2016, his last appearance coming in a 1-0 defeat against Belgium in the group stages.

According to FotbollDirekt Ibrahimovic is poised to make a sensational comeback, and the maverick striker is set to be called up to Janne Andersson's squad on March 16.

Zlatan previously expressed his interest in playing for his country at the 2018 World Cup, but later said he wasn't considering returning to his national team.

Ibrahimovic could feature in World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Kosovo, as well as the friendly against Estonia at the end of March.

Speculation regarding his international future  started after the 39-year-old met with the Sweden manager, Janne Andersson

'When Zlatan opened up for games in the national team, it felt natural and important to meet and discuss this as soon as possible,' Andersson said when asked about their chat.

'I am glad that we managed to get a meeting so quickly.'

Ibrahimovic is Sweden's all-time leading scorer after netting 62 times in 112 appearances. Six of those goals were scored in European Championships, he has never scored in the World Cup.

Edinson Cavani to leave Manchester United for boyhood club Boca Juniors five months after arriving at Old Trafford

Edinson Cavani is reportedly set to leave Manchester United after just a season at Old Trafford and return to South America to fulfill his boyhood dream of playing for Boca Juniors this summer.

According to Argentine publication, Ole, the veteran Urgranyan striker has his heart set on a move to Boca Juniors, despite having the option to extend his contract with United by an extra year.

Cavani signed a deal until the end of the season when he joined United on a free transfer last October, having left PSG at the end of his contract. But it claimed that he wants to fulfill a boyhood dream by seeing out his career at Boca.

The Argentine giants have shown interest in signing him in the past, with Ole previously reporting that Cavani had told club president, Juan Roman Riquelme, that he would join in the future.

The 34-year-old is said to have asked the club who his team-mates would be next season, as well as asking for assurances that they could make signings to challenge for the Copa Libertadores title.

Since his arrival at Manchester United, he's scored seven goals in 25 appearances.

Ole claim that Cavani is willing to take a huge cut on his £210,000-a-week wages to ensure the move goes through smoothly.

According to the Argentine newspaper, the veteran will demand a three-year contract worth the equivalent of what he would earn at United in a single season.

'Unless there's a mistake, that's it,' an unnamed member of Cavani's entourage is quoted as saying. 'He's decided to return now. And he has decided that it's Boca.'

10-Man FC Porto Knock-out Juventus From The Champions League

FC Porto advances to next stage of the Champions league after defeating Juventus on a 4-4 aggregate.
Juve managed to seal a 3-2 victory after extra time, but this was not enough to get the through in their home.

Quote:Sergio Oliveira's 115th-minute goal shocked Juventus to send Porto through on away goals in a stunning Champions League last-16 tie.

Oliveira's long-range free-kick deep into the second half of extra time went through the legs of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Juventus wall to make it 2-2 on the night and give Porto the lead over two legs.

Adrien Rabiot's thumping header two minutes later gave the Italian champions hope, only for Porto goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin to produce a stunning save in the final moments to ensure the Portuguese champions advanced on away goals despite a 3-2 second leg Juventus win.

Porto had opened up a 3-1 aggregate lead through Oliveira's 19th-minute penalty after Merih Demiral brought down Porto's Mehdi Taremi.

But Juventus' Federico Chiesa found the far corner from a tight angle in the 49th minute before Taremi was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away.

And Chiesa headed in a Juan Cuadrado cross after 63 minutes to level the tie on aggregate.

It looked like Juventus would capitalise on their man advantage but Porto defended superbly to take the match extra time where Oliveira's decided the tie.

Juventus have now been knocked out on away goals at this stage for the second consecutive season.

Manchester City vs Southampton preview: Fiery City ready to march on

[Image: 1615369490600.jpg?operations=fit(650:)&w...uality=100]

Pep Guardiola says his Manchester City squad have been ‘on fire’ in training after the disappointment of losing to Manchester United.

The surprise 2-0 reverse ended a remarkable run of 21 straight wins across all competitions and marked a first defeat for Guardiola's men since November 2020.
But they will look to put the disappointment of the derby defeat behind them and go 14 points clear of United at the top of the Premier League when Southampton visit the Etihad tonight.

City’s response

While admitting the training ground was sombre in the aftermath of Sunday's loss, Guardiola (pictured above), 50, expects a strong reaction from his troops against the Saints.

He said: "It was a mixture of disappointment and sadness.
"The second day was a bit better and then they were completely on fire to try and play a good game against Southampton.

"It's a normal process when you lose a game — the reaction is common. I think everyone realised how difficult it is to win games, to do good things and go on good runs.

Quote:It was a mixture of disappointment and sadnessPep Guardiola

"United are a top side and top club with a good manager and good players, so it can happen.

"With the Premier League, it's so complicated and so difficult. There's still a lot of work to do to arrive in the last games in contention to win the Premier League.
"We are alive in all competitions, one final, and now the important part of the season arrives."
Title race is alive
Guardiola believes United's performance last weekend perfectly illustrates that the title race is still alive, despite his side's huge advantage at the top of the table.
He added: "When the option is open, anything can happen in football.

"Nobody thought we could win 21 games in a row or 15 games in the Premier League, so anything can happen. I absolutely agree. For people like United, they can do it."

Time for Adams to shine

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints come into the clash on the back of a first win in 10 games after seeing off Sheffield United 2-0.
With Danny Ings out until April, the Austrian is hopeful that Che Adams’ strike in that win — his first since December — is the start of a scoring run.

Quote:Maybe we have the ketchup bottle phenomenonRalph Hasenhuttl

Hasenhuttl said: "He must be, in some moments, more clinical. This is easy to say. A striker always likes to be clinical and make a goal from every chance.
"He had a long run when he didn't score but maybe we have the ketchup bottle phenomenon. So a long time, nothing — then everything comes."

Ings (muscle), Oriol Romeu (ankle) and Theo Walcott (thigh) are all absent for Southampton but City have a fully-fit squad to choose from.

Juventus 3-2 Porto (aet, 4-4 agg): Oliveira double clinches dramatic away goals win

[Image: portocropped_cqrzdifmcilt1e94z0ece6poi.j...uality=100]

Sergio Oliveira scored twice as 10-man Porto dumped Juventus out of the Champions League with a scintillating away goals victory after a 3-2 second-leg defeat in Turin.
Juventus' task of overturning a 2-1 deficit from the first leg was compounded when Oliveira's penalty gave Porto a the lead after 19 minutes, but Federico Chiesa netted twice in 14 second-half minutes - either side of a red card shown to Porto striker Mehdi Taremi - to take the round-of-16 tie into extra-time.
Oliveira buried a stunning second goal of the night with five minutes left in the second period of extra-time, only for Adrien Rabiot to equalise and set up a tense finish.

Porto held on to spark wild celebrations on the visiting bench as Juve's quest for a first European title since 1996 ended in failure, heaping pressure on head coach Andrea Pirlo.
2003-04 - FC Porto have progressed in a Champions League knockout tie after winning the first leg for the first time since the 2003-04 quarter-final vs Lyon. Survival.

Taremi caused Juve's defenders early problems before he went down under a challenge from Merih Demiral to win Porto a 19th-minute penalty.
Oliveira confidently buried the spot-kick low to Wojciech Szczesny's right as the goalkeeper dived left, taking the midfielder's tally to four goals in his last six Champions League games.
Juve were back in it four minutes into the second half, when Cristiano Ronaldo deftly controlled the ball on the edge of the six yard box and gave Chiesa the opportunity to sweep high into the far corner of the net.
Taremi dealt Porto another blow when a reckless challenge on Chiesa earned him a yellow card moments before he was sent off for booting the ball away after the whistle had been blown 54 minutes in.

The 10 men of Porto withstood fewer than 10 minutes before Chiesa lost his marker and headed Juan Cuadrado's cross into the top corner of the net, despite Agustín Marchesin getting a hand to it.

Cuadrado struck the underside of the crossbar with a thunderous effort as there were chances at either end before the game entered extra-time.

There was another twist when Oliveira sent a 25-yard free-kick under the wall and into the bottom corner of the net with five minutes to play and although Rabiot headed home at a corner two minutes later, Juve could not deny Porto a place in the quarter-finals despite applying more late pressure.

What does it mean? Pressure mounts on Pirlo and his porous defence

With the Bianconeri 10 points off the pace in Serie A, albeit with a game in hand, Pirlo needed a strong showing in the Champions League.
But for all their attacking flair, Juventus faced nine shots in the first half alone and failed to keep Porto quiet even with 10 men.

The Bianconeri board will surely be asking questions after watching the Serie A champions bow out with some porous defending.

Oliveira outshines Chiesa

Chiesa became the first Italian to score twice in a Champions League match for Juve since Alessandro Del Piero in November 2008.
Yet the night belonged to Oliveira, who has plundered five goals in his last six games in the competition.

Ronaldo falls short

Ronaldo hit the target with just two of his five shots at goal, while strike partner Alvaro Morata tested Marchesin with all four of his attempts but found no way past the Porto keeper.

Key Opta Facts

- Porto progressed in a Champions League knockout tie after winning the first leg for the first time since the quarter-final versus Lyon in 2004, when they won the competition.

- There were just 104 seconds between Oliveira's crucial free-kick and Rabiot's header in the 117th minute.
- No Porto player has scored more penalties in the Champions League than Oliveira (3). He also netted Porto's first direct free-kick in the competition since Casemiro against Basel in March 2015.

- Cuadrado became the first player to create 12 chances in a single Champions League game since Mesut Ozil for Real Madrid versus Spurs in April 2011.

What's next?

Juventus are away at struggling Cagliari in Serie A on Sunday, while Porto are at home against Pacos de Ferreira in the Primeira Liga

In Focus: The squad players supporting Mbappe and Co at PSG

[Image: 1615370830409.jpg?operations=fit(650:)&w...uality=100]

Kylian Mbappe and Neymar are Paris Saint-Germain’s headliners — but there is a whole band backing up Mauricio Pochettino’s regulars.

Although Les Parisiens are still competing on three fronts, they have a number of injuries ahead of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Barcelona tonight, which they lead 4-1.

With a Ligue 1 title race and the latter stages of a Coupe de France campaign to contend with alongside European ambitions, which squad players could prove key to their hopes of an unprecedented treble?

Rafinha
Former Barcelona midfielder Rafinha (pictured above) has only started 11 league matches for PSG since his arrival last summer — but the 28-year-old Brazilian has already made quite an impact.

His four league assists for the season average out at 0.36 per 90 minutes played, which puts him inside the top 10 players in France’s top flight. So why is he not getting more game time?
When asked that question last month, Pochettino said:

"All the decisions are football-related. In Rafa’s case, he was impacted by coronavirus when we arrived.

"We have a strong squad and we take decisions. It is important to be ready when the moment comes. These are footballing decisions and he will have opportunities."

Colin Dagba
On-loan Roma star Alessandro Florenzi remains the first-choice right-back for PSG’s biggest matches but Colin Dagba, 22, is a more than competent rotation option.

Composed with the ball at his feet, he has completed 90.17% of his passes this season (20th in Ligue 1), maintaining the form when given the opportunity that saw him linked with a move to German giants Bayern Munich last summer.

Layvin Kurzawa

Layvin Kurzawa appeared to be on the verge of signing for Arsenal in January 2020 but instead extended his stay in Paris, where he has proven to be a very useful back-up left-back.

Now closing in on 150 appearances in all competitions over six seasons with the club, his strength lies in his dynamism down the left flank.

The 28-year-old Frenchman likes to play particularly high up the field, bombing up and down the touchline before linking up with PSG’s attackers to provide 1.4 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes.

Pablo Sarabia

Despite starting five matches since Pochettino’s arrival, Pablo Sarabia has been in and out of the side this season.

But the attacking midfielder’s eye-catching numbers suggest he should be one of the first names on his manager’s team sheet.
Only fellow PSG star Angel Di Maria (1.00) has created more big chances per 90 minutes of action than Sarabia (0.99), resulting in four league assists for the campaign.

The former Sevilla star, 28, also chips in when it comes to goals. He has scored five times in Ligue 1 this term, including the winner in last week’s vital 1-0 victory over Bordeaux.

Danilo Pereira

Trying to usurp the likes of Marco Verratti, Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye is no easy task and on-loan Porto midfielder Danilo Pereira has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth in the centre of the park.

But the anchorman, 29, has still featured in 15 league matches, proving remarkably efficient at retaining possession by completing 70.18 passes per 90 minutes with a 91.25% accuracy — among Ligue 1’s top 10 performers.

Like the rest of PSG’s talented squad players, the Portuguese international remains a vital cog in their challenge for the treble — even if he does not start the showpiece matches like tonight’s clash with Barcelona.
