Pochettino hoping for a favour from Marseille in tight Ligue 1 title

[Image: mauricio-pochettino-cropped_ff3j0b6fioi2...uality=100]

Mauricio Pochettino is hoping bitter rivals Marseille can give Paris Saint-Germain a helping hand in the Ligue 1 title race when they face Lyon on Sunday.

PSG eased to a 4-0 win over bottom side Dijon on Saturday to climb two points above Lyon in second place and a point behind leaders Lille, both of whom have a game in hand.

Lyon have won five of their last six league games and can move back above the reigning champions when they make the trip to the Stade Velodrome.

There is no love lost between PSG and Marseille, but Pochettino will be supporting Les Phoceens in Sunday's clash.
"We're going to watch the match and it would be welcome if Marseille wins," Pochettino told Canal+ "You have to win matches and stay consistent."

PSG were comfortable winners at Stade Gaston-Gerard thanks to Kylian Mbappe's double - the first of those from the penalty spot - either side of a Moise Kean strike and Danilo Pereira header.

It marks the first time since October that the Parisians have won back-to-back away matches in the league and, a week on from losing at home to Monaco, Pochettino was pleased with the manner of the victory.

"I am very happy. We were very professional today," he said. "It's important to win again and feel that feeling, and also to be perfect from the start.

"It was a very physical team we played and our approach was the right one. We were as we wanted to be, constant from the start."

Danilo's late header was his first goal for PSG and the holding midfielder also made a big contribution defensively, gaining possession more times (eight) than any player on the field.

"I'm happy with Danilo. He has shown that he can have a place in the side," he said. "Danilo is very professional and we are happy that he scored."

Danilo left the field seven minutes after scoring but has allayed fears of a possible injury lay-off heading into a crucial run of fixtures for PSG.

"It's nothing serious," he said. "Now I have to continue working hard every day to play. Today I was given an opportunity and I think I did well.

"I'm very happy to have scored my first goal and particularly happy with the win. It was a good game for us after losing to Monaco and important we took the three points."

Echoing the view of boss Pochettino, Danilo added: "Now I hope Marseille win!".
PSG have now won 11 of their 12 Ligue 1 meetings with Dijon, scoring 41 goals across those games.

Sevilla 0-2 Barcelona: Dembele and Messi settle league encounter before Copa semi

[Image: ousmane-dembele-celebrates-at-sevilla_6v...uality=100]

Barcelona claimed a deserved 2-0 LaLiga win at Sevilla on Saturday in the first of the sides' two crunch clashes.

The Blaugrana will host Sevilla in their Copa del Rey semi-final second leg in midweek but first took care of business in the league thanks to strikes from Ousmane Dembele and Lionel Messi.

A display of similar dominance will now be required at Camp Nou, as Barca trail 2-0 from the first leg of their Copa tie.

Ronald Koeman's men will certainly not be short of confidence after climbing to second, only two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid having played two games more.

Barca had initially lacked a focal point, playing a 3-5-2 formation without a natural striker, yet their unorthodox front two combined to great effect for the opener after 29 minutes.

As Messi dropped deep to collect the ball, Dembele tore away on the shoulder of the last defender and met a pinpoint pass to fire under Yassine Bounou.

That was the only moment of real quality in a low-key first half, but Barca twice in quick succession should have added to their advantage after the break.

Sergino Dest blasted against the post when the ball broke his way following a patient move, before Dembele raced away again and teed up Messi, who blazed over.

Clement Lenglet then had a header ruled out for offside, yet Messi settled any nerves as he played a smart one-two with Ilaix Moriba and prodded in the rebound when Bounou blocked his dinked attempt five minutes from the end.
Only an apparent injury to Ronald Araujo, 15 minutes after his return to action, put a dampener on Barca's day.

What does it mean? Ideal prep for semi second leg

Barca needed a result to boost their title hopes, piling further pressure on an Atleti outfit who now have just one win in five in all competitions.
But the nature of the win was also important given their next task: beating Sevilla again.

The new formation, used for the first time this season, worked once Dembele stretched the game, Barca having nine shots and five on target to Sevilla's four and two.

Dembele does the damage

The game did not see a single attempt until the 22nd minute when Dembele, previously playing far too deep, suddenly showed a willingness to run beyond a Sevilla defence that subsequently looked uncomfortable for the first time.

Dembele's first effort was easily held by Bounou, yet he dispatched his second, a sixth big chance of the season but only the second he has converted. He finished with three shots and also played a key pass for Messi.

Araujo out of action again?

Araujo has arguably been Barca's most impressive defender this season, but he had been out of action since prior to the semi-final first leg. His return came as a big boost on Saturday, although it was not immediately clear if his introduction came due to a problem with Gerard Pique.

The substitute soon departed, too, seemingly hurt making the only tackle he attempted during his time on the pitch. Araujo aimed a kick at pitchside equipment in his frustration and, although Koeman could also then call on Samuel Umtiti, Barca will hope this is not another lengthy lay-off.

Key Opta Facts:
- Ousmane Dembele's goal for Barcelona has ended the best streak without conceding for a Sevilla keeper in LaLiga (Yassine Bounou, 557 minutes).
- Lionel Messi has scored 30 goals against Sevilla in LaLiga, more than against any other opponent.
- Sevilla failed to register a shot by half time for the first time under Julen Lopetegui (92 games in all competitions).

- Jules Kounde has played 50 league games for Sevilla.

What's next?

Both teams now head to Catalonia for Wednesday's Copa clash, where Sevilla might have to show more to protect their 2-0 first-leg lead.

Liverpool don't need a 'massive rebuild', says Klopp

[Image: jurgenklopp-cropped_enshij48s3vv1j3j6dsn...uality=100]

Jurgen Klopp insisted there was no need for a "massive rebuild" at Liverpool amid their struggles this season.

The reigning champions are in a fight for Champions League qualification after losing their past four Premier League games ahead of visiting Sheffield United on Sunday.

Liverpool have endured a horrid run with injuries this season, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez missing most of the campaign, while several others have also been sidelined and captain Jordan Henderson has undergone surgery on a groin injury.

But Liverpool manager Klopp sees no need for drastic changes at Anfield.

"I don't think it is time for a massive rebuild like how I understand it," the German said.

"The squad of this year didn't have the chance to play together one time really. I think it would make sense to have a look at that [problem] but on top of that, of course little readjustments will happen.

"Reacting on the situation but planning at the same time for the future and all these kinds of things. I am not sure we can do that in the summer but that is what we will try."
Liverpool sit sixth in the Premier League table, five points adrift of fourth-placed West Ham.

While he accepted results have been below-par, Klopp believes his side's performances are improving.

"It is all about results. The table doesn't lie. Never. That is completely fine. We know that performance-wise we are not that far away, but results-wise we are," he said.

"That is what we have to change and for all the different reasons that it was a difficult season so far for us.

"We try with all we have to sort it and while you try and sort one problem another problem occurs. That is in a season when it is not going perfect, obviously."

Liverpool won 1-0 at Bramall Lane last season, with Sheffield United last losing consecutive home top-flight meetings with the Reds in September 1921.

Rumour Has It: Messi open to Barcelona stay, Madrid move for Mbappe could impact Hazard

[Image: lionel-messi-cropped_o9jc8ymlgmwd12kwlsi...uality=100]

Lionel Messi is reportedly open to staying at Barcelona, but the LaLiga giants have work to do.

Messi, 33, stayed at Barca after sensationally requesting to leave ahead of this season.

But the six-time Ballon d'Or winner is out of contract at the end of the campaign, leading to more talk over his future.

TOP STORY – MESSI OPEN TO BARCELONA STAY
Messi is open to staying at Barcelona and is prioritising the sporting project over the economic offer, according to Marca.

The report says Barca strengthening their squad could convince Messi, who has been linked to Manchester City.
Signing City forward Sergio Aguero, Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, Chelsea's N'Golo Kante or Liverpool's Roberto Firmino would help Barca's position in their bid to re-sign the superstar.

ROUND-UP
- With Real Madrid linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe, such a deal could lead to questions over Eden Hazard. AS reports Mbappe joining Madrid could lead to an exit for Hazard, who has struggled with injuries since joining the LaLiga giants.

- Staying at Real Madrid and there is uncertainty over Raphael Varane's future. AS reports Madrid are prepared to listen to offers for Varane ahead of next season if they cannot agree to a new deal with the defender, who is out of contract in 2022. Manchester United have been linked with Varane, who is valued at £60.7million (€70m).

- Harry Kane has again starred for Tottenham this season. The Telegraph reports the forward, who is contracted until 2024, is set to stay at Spurs for at least another campaign.

- Amid suggestions Sevilla defender Jules Kounde is too expensive, Manchester United could look elsewhere. Eurosport reports Villarreal's Pau Torres may be a more realistic target due to his reported release clause of around £43m (€49.6m).

- Alexandre Lacazette seems set for an Arsenal exit. The Mirror reports Monaco are targeting the forward ahead of next season.

Unique' De Bruyne makes Man City tick, but Bernardo brings calmness - Guardiola

[Image: bernardo-silva-and-kevin-de-bruyne-cropp...uality=100]

Pep Guardiola is relishing the competition for places at Manchester City that means "unique" Kevin De Bruyne may no longer be an automatic selection.

De Bruyne made his return from a month-long hamstring injury lay-off as a late substitute against Everton last week and started the 1-0 win against Arsenal four days later.

However, the reigning PFA Players' Player of the Year was an unused substitute for City's trip Borussia Monchengladbach in midweek, despite Guardiola confirming the playmaker was fully fit.

City won that Champions League last-16 first leg 2-0 through a Bernardo Silva header and Gabriel Jesus' strike, having also won all five-top-flight games De Bruyne missed during his time on the sidelines, scoring 15 times and conceding just once.

And with Bernardo continuing to excel in City's midfield three alongside Ilkay Gundogan and Rodri, Guardiola has reiterated De Bruyne is no longer indispensable.

"They are quite similar but Kevin gives us something Bernardo doesn't give and vice versa," Guardiola said. "Every player has his own skills but they do it for the benefit of the team. That's why they are so stable.

"It's good for us, this competition between themselves. It was the same for [Kyle] Walker in the last game - because he knows Joao [Cancelo] is playing so good. It's the only way to maintain consistency.

"Every three days there's a game and there's a competition among them. Our transitions with Kevin are much better - he is unique in the world. Without Kevin maybe we are more calm and have more time to pause, but it's not that we want one way or the other, it's the quality of the players we have."

De Bruyne's 10 assists in the Premier League this term are bettered only by Harry Kane's 11, the Tottenham striker having played three games more, while only Mason Mount (62), Bruno Fernandes (71) and Jack Grealish (75) can better his 58 chances created.

Bernardo may lag some way behind De Bruyne in both categories - assisting three goals and laying on 16 opportunities for team-mates - but Guardiola believes the Portuguese brings other qualities to the side.

City dominated possession away to Gladbach with 61 per cent of the ball and the manager said: "Sometimes you need more passes and Bernardo has that quality when he receives the ball.

"With opponents behind him, he can make two or four touches then give it. Kevin is a different player, more of a free mind, more explosion, and we need it.

He sees something that other ones cannot see and he provides passes others can't see. Sometimes I need him to be more behind, Bernardo up front.

"It depends on the opponent. Sometimes the striker jumps, it depends on our movement, it depends on every game."
City are looking to make it 20 wins in a row in all competitions when they take on West Ham at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, a run that includes 13 successive victories in the top flight. Only on five previous occasions has a side won 14 or more on the spin.

Guardiola jokingly said earlier this week that money was the most important factor behind his side's incredible winning streak, which has them on course for a clean sweep of silverware.

But while the Catalan coach is thankful to have been financially backed by the club's wealthy owners, he insists there is more to his project at City than simply spending big sums of money, with others doing likewise during his time in England.

"I'm proud for the fact that [after] one team wins the Premier League they struggle a lot but we won back-to-back," he said. "Last season we could not fight against Liverpool - it was incredible. We were second but today, this season, again we are there - this is what I'm proud of most.

"Four Carabao Cup finals, this is what I am proud of the most. And of course, we created this ourselves. But to do this you need top talents, top players and top players cost money.

But honestly, I think United spent money too and Chelsea spent money, and Barcelona spent a lot and in Madrid they spend, as do all the clubs in that position."

Guardiola has used Joao Cancelo in a hybrid full-back/midfield position during City's ongoing winning streak but the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss, who has won 29 trophies during his managerial career, does not believe he deserves more credit than his players for their success.

"You are not convincing me," he said. "The difference is the players. "I didn't invent anything. It's just the way I do it. I can play like this but sometimes I'm going to play in a different way. It's not about that. I would tell if I believed the reason why was me. I would tell you.

"I would be grateful to say that the reason behind this success is because I'm so handsome and that's the reason why. It's not like that. It's the players. The big clubs have incredible success, in South America and Europe, and it's due to the quality of the players, the mentality."

He added: "Still I have the feeling when we finished the game against Gladbach maybe it will not be enough to reach the last stages of the Champions League if we don't improve in some departments. It’s the only way to getting better.

"If I did not feel we could get better, I would not have extended my contract here. One hundred per cent. If I extend my contract, it's because they convinced me for different issues and still that we can do better. If not, [my time with] the team would be over."

Bayern Munich 5-1 Cologne: Lewandowski and Gnabry at the double as Muller returns

[Image: robert-lewandowski-and-leon-goretzka-cel...uality=100]

Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga as Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry both scored twice in a convincing 5-1 win over Cologne.

After returning to domestic duties following their Club World Cup success in Qatar with a home draw against Arminia Bielefeld, the reigning champions slipped to a 2-1 loss away at Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend.

However, a 4-1 thrashing of Lazio in Champions League action in midweek proved the catalyst for a first league triumph at their Allianz Arena home since January 30.
Lewandowski's first goal helped Bayern ease into a 2-0 half-time lead and while Cologne briefly threatened a comeback, the returning Thomas Muller made an immediate impression off the bench, providing the assist that allowed the competition's leading scorer to take his tally for the campaign to 28.

Like Muller, substitute Gnabry had an impact on his comeback, the Germany international tucking away a pair of routine finishes as the hosts eased clear in the closing stages.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had opened the scoring with his first league goal for the club, heading in an inviting cross from Leon Goretzka, who then went on to set up his side's second before the break.

The midfielder waltzed his way beyond Rafael Czichos before laying the ball off as goalkeeper Timo Horn came towards him, allowing the ever-ready Lewandowski to roll it into the net.

Cologne failed to even muster an attempt as the first half proved to be one-way traffic, yet they were gifted a route back into the game when hesitation between centre-back pairing Jerome Boateng and David Alaba allowed Ellyes Skhiri in to produce a delicate lofted finish over the advancing Manuel Neuer.

The goal caused a brief wobble, yet the 64th-minute arrival of Muller - back after overcoming coronavirus - helped steady Bayern, the substitute teeing up Lewandowski to restore the two-goal cushion with a shot on the turn.

Dominick Drexler hit the post from a tight angle after robbing possession from Neuer before Gnabry's four-minute brace, the second of which was set up by the outstanding Goretzka with another delightful delivery into the area, added a touch of gloss to the final scoreline.

What does it mean? Bayern remain clear at the summit

Bayern's recent blip had allowed the chasing pack – led by RB Leipzig – to close the gap at the top of the table. Flick's side have already lost more Bundesliga games in 2021 (two) than they did across the entirety of the previous year.
This win is therefore most welcome in what has suddenly become a tighter-than-expected title race, but Flick – who made 44 appearances for Cologne during his playing career - will be concerned at the careless defensive lapse that allowed Skhiri to give the visitors a slither of hope.

Duo back to boost Bayern

While COVID-19 had kept Muller away, Gnabry had not featured since the Club World Cup final due to a thigh issue. The latter only had 13 touches during his goalscoring cameo, but the availability of the pair helps add further strength in depth, even if the fixture congestion eases in March.

Defensive cracks raise concerns

Bayern had conceded 31 goals prior to this game, their highest tally through 22 league games in a campaign since 1991-92. The chance of a clean sheet disappeared when Boateng and Alaba dithered over who was going to attack a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area, in the end neither bothering to take control of the situation.

Key Opta facts

- This was the 100th competitive meeting between Bayern and Cologne. Bayern secured their 53rd victory in those 100 matches.
- Cologne have failed to win any of their last 14 Bundesliga meetings with Bayern (L13, D1). Only twice have they had a longer Bundesliga drought against a single opponent: 1997-2010 against Leverkusen (15 games) and 1991-2011 against Kaiserslautern (25 games).

- Cologne failed to have a single shot in the first half for the first time in a Bundesliga match since a game against Schalke in December 2014.
- Bayern have scored 67 goals after 23 matchdays – only in 1973-74 have they scored more in the first 23 matchdays (68 goals).
- Lewandowski scored his 27th and 28th Bundesliga goals this season – no player has scored as many goals after 23 matchdays in Germany as he has.

This was his seventh Bundesliga match this season with two or more goals, which is a league high, ahead of Erling Haaland (6).
- Gnabry has scored nine Bundesliga goals against Cologne – more than against any other side in his career.

What's next?

Bayern have a rare week between fixtures, giving them time to prepare for the visit of Borussia Dortmund next Saturday. Cologne, meanwhile, will be hosting Werder Bremen the following day.

Arsenal 'expected many more things' from Willian – Arteta

[Image: willian-cropped_19iaucsok7ss01olcedc89y5...uality=100]

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted the club were "expecting many more things" from off-season signing Willian but believes his midweek assist can be a breakthrough.

The Gunners signed veteran Willian on a free transfer in August after seven seasons across London with Premier League rivals Chelsea.

However, the 32-year-old Brazil international is yet to score for Arsenal since his cross-town move and has had an underwhelming impact.

Willian came off the bench to provide the pass for Kieran Tierney's goal in Arsenal's 3-2 win over Benfica in the Europa League on Thursday in a boost which Arteta hopes can lead to more impact.

"I was really pleased with Willian on Thursday," Arteta told reporters.
"He totally deserves some credit because of the way he trains every day and he is trying.

"In games now you can see that he is starting to produce what we think he can do for the team so everyone has to step up and create big moments in games, because the front players in the end have to be the ones that decide the game for us.

"His team-mates like him and we were expecting many more things from him since he joined but for many different reasons he hasn't found his best performances.

"But hopefully Thursday's performance is going to give him the platform and belief that he is a really important player - he is a player I really like and I did a lot to bring him in and hopefully he can still give us more."

Arsenal make the trip to third-placed Leicester City on Sunday, with Willian in contention to make his first league start since December.
Arteta's Arsenal are 11th in the standings, 15 points behind Leicester and 28 points adrift of runaway leaders Manchester City.

Leipzig 'dreaming' of winning Bundesliga title, says Poulsen

[Image: yussuf-poulsen-cropped_1jmn2nwk0uj4h1ell...uality=100]

Yussuf Poulsen said RB Leipzig are dreaming of winning the Bundesliga title after their dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Monchengladbach led 2-0 after 20 minutes on Saturday, but Leipzig fought back with three second-half goals – including a 93rd-minute winner from Alexander Sorloth.

For the first time in their Bundesliga history, Leipzig won a match after trailing by two goals.

The result keeps Leipzig two points behind leaders Bayern Munich after the defending champions routed Cologne 5-1 on Saturday.

Leipzig, who finished third in their past two Bundesliga campaigns and were runners-up in 2016-17, have now won five league games in a row to mount significant pressure on Bayern.

"Everybody dreams of the title, especially when you have been at the top of the Bundesliga in the last four seasons," said Poulsen, who has been at Leipzig since 2013.

"Of course everybody is thinking about it but we know there's still a third of the season left."

Jurgen Klopp out, Steven Gerrard in?

Klopp ended Liverpool's 30-year wait for league glory last season, but the German manager could be set for a return to his homeland.
His exit could see Gerrard return to Merseyside.

TOP STORY – GERRARD TO REPLACE KLOPP IN LIVERPOOL RETURN
Steven Gerrard may soon return to Anfield but as manager to replace Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, according to The Mirror.

Liverpool reportedly expect Klopp to take up an opportunity with Germany in the near future amid doubts over long-time head coach Joachim Low.

As a result, Liverpool legend Gerrard has been sounded out as he has Rangers on a cusp of a drought-breaking league title in Scotland.
Gerrard, who made more than 700 appearances for Liverpool, took control of Rangers in 2018.

ROUND-UP
- Erling Haaland seems to be on every club's wish list but the Mirror reports Manchester City have joined the queue for the Borussia Dortmund star. City manager Pep Guardiola and Haaland's agent Mina Raiola have a testy relationship but the Premier League leaders will press ahead with an alleged £100million (€115m) deal. English pair Chelsea and Manchester United are also reportedly interested along with Real MadridBarcelonaJuventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
- Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea want to keep veteran defender Thiago Silva beyond the 2020-21 season. Chelsea signed Silva on a free transfer following his PSG exit.

- LaLiga giants Barcelona are in the market for a young defender and have set their sights on Inter's 21-year-old Alessandro Bastoni, according to Calciomercato.

Arsenal are in the hunt for Wigan Athletic sensation Kyle Joseph, with the teenager scoring five goals in 14 appearances. The Mirror claims the Gunners have joined Celtic and Rangers in their interest in the London-born Scotland youth international whose current contract expires in June.

Liverpool and rivals United are eyeing Leicester City's Harvey Barnes, reports the Mirror. The 23-year-old has established himself as a key player for the Foxes.

Eric Bailly is in talks with United over a new long-term contract, claims The Sun. The 26-year-old defender, who has been plagued by injuries at Old Trafford, is out of contract in 2022. It comes amid United's reported interest in Sevilla's Jules KoundeIbrahima Konate of RB Leipzig and Brighton and Hove Albion star

Chelsea vs Man Utd preview: Tuchel knows what United bring to the table

[Image: 1614354775133.jpg?operations=fit(650:)&w...uality=100]

Thomas Tuchel knows three points against Manchester United could prove vital for Chelsea as the race for a top-four finish intensifies.

With six wins and two draws from eight games since Tuchel (pictured above) replaced Frank Lampard, the Blues have made an excellent start to life under their new boss.

After humbling La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in midweek, victory over United would move the Londoners back to fourth in the Premier League table.
And Tuchel, 47, believes today's encounter at Stamford Bridge will be a very different game to the goalless stalemate Chelsea played out at Old Trafford last October — when he was still in charge of Paris Saint-Germain.

The German said: "It helps that you know the style, the strengths and weaknesses.
"We have a pretty good impression of the style they play and the spaces they want to hurt us, along with their strengths individually and as a group. That helps to prepare.

"They like to have space, they like to counter-attack, they like to use their speed and absorb our speed.

"There is a lot to do but we are on a good run and it will be a big challenge to be the first ones to beat them in a Premier League away game."
Solskjaer’s side head to the capital having not lost on their travels in the league since a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool in January 2020.

But with only two wins in their last six, United must keep their foot on the gas if they are to ensure an encouraging campaign ends with Champions League qualification.

Solskjaer has overseen wins in each of his last three trips to Stamford Bridge across all competitions, while the Blues have failed to net against his side in three straight league meetings.

But the Norwegian, who turned 48 on Friday, is expecting a tougher time on this occasion.

He said: "It's going to be a great challenge for us. You can see the results, the stats, the possession they've had. They keep teams away from their own goal, keep the possession.

"It's never easy coming into a season halfway through, so he [Tuchel] must be pleased as well. But hopefully we can stop that run, that's my job now."

Thiago Silva (muscle) misses out again for the hosts, while Scott McTominay (knock), Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani (muscle) are likely to join Paul Pogba (thigh) on the sidelines for United.

Did you know?

Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in each of their three Premier League home games under Tuchel, with the Blues last keeping four in a row in January 2018.

United striker Marcus Rashford has been involved in seven goals in all competitions against Chelsea (five goals and two assists).

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has scored two goals in his last three Premier League games — as many as in his previous 21 in the competition.

Barcelona RAIDED: Police arrest super-club's ex-president Josep Bartomeu, their CEO, head of legal and search offices for evidence over social media 'smear campaign' against Lionel Messi and Co[/b]

Josep Maria Bartomeu has been arrested by Spanish police for his involvement in the 'Barcagate' smear campaign scandal during his time as their club president.

Bartomeu is one of four people to have been arrested so far, with Barcelona's CEO Oscar Grau and head of legal services Roman Gomez Ponti two of those. Jaume Masferrer, who acted as an adviser to Bartomeu, is the other.

On Monday morning, Spanish police entered Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium in a search and seize operation. Bartomeu was arrested at home. The Economic Crimes Unit of the Catalonia Police Force are overseeing the searches.

Spanish media said the operation was related to last year's 'Barcagate,' in which club officials were accused of launching a smear campaign against current and former players who were critical of the club and then-president Bartomeu.

Star man Lionel Messi, veteran defender Gerard Pique and former manager, now Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola were among those targeted by the negative stories and social media posts.

Parma 1-2 Inter: Sanchez double moves Nerazzurri six points clear

[Image: alexis-sanchez_r6ftse6tf2z3126q5t5ocey9d...uality=100]

Inter moved six points clear at the Serie A summit as a brace from Alexis Sanchez sealed a 2-1 win away at struggling Parma on Thursday.

Scudetto rivals Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by Udinese on Wednesday and Antonio Conte's side took full advantage of that slip up to move closer to a first league title since the 2009-10 campaign.

Sanchez, who scored in the weekend win over Genoa, set Inter on their way to a sixth consecutive top-flight win with his fourth league goal of the campaign nine minutes into the second half.

The former Manchester United player added another eight minutes later as Inter, who gave the hosts hope of salvaging a draw when Hernani scored 19 minutes from full time, claimed yet another three points to pull away from their neighbours at the top of the table.

Parma carved out the first clear sight of goal in the contest, Samir Handanovic pawing away Jasmin Kurtic's header in the 15th minute.

A sluggish Inter did not have a shot on target until the 33rd minute when Milan Skriniar's effort inside the six-yard box was well kept out by Luigi Sepe.

The Parma goalkeeper then thwarted Romelu Lukaku after he had been played in by Marcelo Brozovic, while the Belgium international also headed wide before the interval.

However, Inter started the second half brightly and went ahead in the 54th minute when Sanchez's strike from eight yards proved too powerful for Sepe, creeping over the line before Riccardo Gagliolo could clear.

The Chile international claimed his second in the 62nd minute, sliding his finish past an exposed Sepe after a barnstorming run from Lukaku created the opportunity for his team-mate.

Hernani set up a tense finale with a controlled volley from 10 yards from Giuseppe Pezzella's cross in the 71st minute, yet Inter held on to take another significant step towards the title.

What does it mean? Parma make it difficult
Inter did not have it all their own way against a side that has now gone 16 games without a win in Serie A, the hosts enjoying 52 per cent possession and taking 12 shots to their opponents' tally of 11.

With a first title in more than a decade in their sights, however, Conte will scarcely care. The only thing that matters now to the Inter boss is getting three more points.

Sanchez steps up in style

Conte opted to give Lautaro Martinez a rest - albeit he did come on as a late substitute - and his replacement did not disappoint.

Sanchez completed just eight passes in his 75 minutes on the pitch but scored two goals from as many attempts. With that kind of accuracy, Conte might be tempted to stick with him for the next few games.

Quiet outing for Perisic

Ivan Perisic struggled to make an impact for the visitors, winning none of his five duels and losing possession 10 times before he was brought off for Matteo Darmian inside the final 10 minutes.

Key Opta Facts

- Inter have earned 59+ Serie A points in the opening 25 games of a single campaign for the fourth time in the three-points-for-a-win era. In the previous three (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09) they won the title.

- Sanchez has scored five league goals this season, more than he netted in the whole of the last Serie A campaign (four).

- Prior to Sanchez, the last Chilean player to score 2+ goals in a Serie A game for Inter was Ivan Zamorano in September 1999 against Parma.

- Parma have earned only eight points in Serie A this season in 13 home games, their joint-worst at this stage (also eight in 2014-15).
- Handanovic has equalled Alessandro Altobelli as the 10th player with the most Serie A appearances with Inter (317).

What's next?

Inter will be hoping to make it seven Serie A wins on the spin when they host Atalanta on Monday, while Parma visit Fiorentina a day earlier.

Alli opportunity no 'gift' as Mourinho praises Spurs midfielder

[Image: tottenham-midfielder-dele-alli_h2jzub5eh...uality=100]

Jose Mourinho made clear Dele Alli deserved to start for Tottenham against Fulham after putting in the hard work in recent weeks – and was pleased with what he delivered in the 1-0 win.

Alli was named in Spurs' XI in the Premier League for just the second time this season, the midfielder playing 67 minutes before making way for Moussa Sissoko.
The England international created two chances and also had a shot himself during his time on the pitch, continuing an upward trend for a player whose future at the club has appeared uncertain for so much of the campaign.

Mourinho made clear a place in the team was a well-deserved reward for Alli, rather than a "gift", as he looks to rotate amid a hectic schedule.

"He deserves it. It was not a gift, [it] was a consequence of his work since he came back to the team. [Through] Work and working with the team 100 per cent and becoming fully fit and ready to play," the Tottenham boss told the media.

"He was giving us important things. He did very well in the Europa League. He did very well every minute on the pitch against West Ham, against Burnley, he was deserving.

"In this moment we need the squad, with so many matches coming so fast. Of course we need it. We cannot change the structure of the team. We can change two or three players, which today we did with Dele, Ben [Davies] and Matt [Doherty].

"I'm happy with what they gave to the team. For Dele, it was important to have a feeling of a Premier League start."

Alli was involved in the winner too, albeit his failure to connect properly resulted in an own goal by Tosin Adarabioyo that settled a close contest in Tottenham's favour.

Fulham had just under 60 per cent possession and pushed hard for an equaliser, but the visitors held on at Craven Cottage for a win that further boosts their hopes of a top-four finish.

"I believe that we really showed from the first minute that we were coming for that [the win]," Mourinho said of the performance.

"The first half was a good half for us, the second half was harder. They put some pressure on us, but I believe that when we made the changes, we brought a new energy and dynamic to the team. We brought the danger to the other side.
"Even being a solid block to defend we were the team with the best chances to score in the last ten minutes."
Spurs have now won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time since November, with Crystal Palace up next on Sunday.

Tuchel 'super happy' but issues warning after Chelsea beat Liverpool

[Image: tuchelcropped_n5w1v8bzptxa1dghaxcr57n4u....uality=100]

Thomas Tuchel was "super happy" with a 1-0 Premier League victory at Liverpool but warned Chelsea can ill afford to "sit back" in the battle for a top-four finish.
Mason Mount scored the only goal of the game as the Blues consigned the champions to a fifth consecutive defeat at Anfield for the first time in their history.

England midfielder Mount's clinical first-half finish extended the London club's run to 10 matches without defeat since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as boss in January and moved them into fourth spot.

Chelsea are four points ahead of seventh-placed Liverpool and on the evidence of their performance on Merseyside, they looked destined to be playing Champions League football next season.

The Reds had only one shot on target and Timo Werner had a first-half goal ruled out for offside in a display that Tuchel savoured.

Tuchel said: "I'm super happy. If I'm honest I still have regrets about the draw against Southampton because I was not happy we dropped two points and the way we dropped them.

"But in general, I'm happy. From the first day I've felt part of the club and it's a pleasure to coach the team. I can feel the energy and attitude that is needed. They are prepared to sacrifice for each other.

"I have never judged games because I am happy for every win, because I know how hard it is to keep on winning and keep clean sheets. So I am very happy because I know what it takes."

Tuchel says Chelsea must maintain their high standards, with a clash against fifth-placed Everton their next assignment on Monday.

"We have been in the top four, after the win against Newcastle," the German added. "So we can't lose focus by looking at the fixtures. All we can do is prepare every match at the highest level because this league doesn't allow you to drop your level.

"There are still 11 games to go, nothing is decided. We are in the race, closed the gap very quickly which is a big effort. Now we're in the middle of the race and we need to keep going.

"But it's the competition in this league, the competition in the Champions League, and the competition in the FA Cup that means we can't sit back."

Highly-rated English-German young winger, Jamal  Musiala has signed a new bumper contract with Bayern Munich, his first professional deal with the club, a week after turning 18.

Musiala has already played 27 times for Bayern's first team, scoring four goals.

Musiala told Bayern's official website: “I’m really pleased to have signed my first professional contract at FC Bayern.

"I just feel very good at the club and in the team, I’m playing with the best players in the world and I can learn from them every day in training. Hansi Flick, [director] Hasan Salihamidzic and [chief scout] Marco Neppe along with the whole club have believed in me and given me the chance very early on.

"I just want to repay that faith with good performances, keep getting better and win a lot more titles with FC Bayern. My aim is to become an important player for this club.”

Man City vs Man Utd: We are not suffering a crisis of confidence – Solskjaer

on
 March 6, 2021

[Image: ole-gunnar-solskjaer-cropped_a8jd73az6yf...b.jpg.webp]

Manchester United Manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has insisted his players are having a crisis of confidence ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.

The Red Devils have gone three games without a goal.

Ahead of the Derby, United have played three consecutive 0-0 draws.

City, on the other hand, have opened a 14-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

United have managed just two wins from their last eight league games, but Solskjaer insists his team are not out of form.

“We had a week without scoring a goal,” Solskjaer told a news conference on Friday.

“It’s not like six weeks with bad form. Not long we won 9-0 [against Southampton], 4-0 against a Real Sociedad team that should have won against Real Madrid at the weekend.

“I’m not buying into the narrative we’ve had such a dip in form. We’ve not had margins. Three 0-0s isn’t us and it’s not what we set out to do. We’ve defended well but lacked that spark to score. I don’t buy the out of form one.”

Sir Alex Ferguson reveals he had 80% chance of dying after suffering 2018 brain haemorrhage which left him unable to speak

Legendary football manager, Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he had an 80 percent chance of dying following a brain haemorrhage in May 2018.

The former manager of Manchester United, 79, admitted in his upcoming documentary Never Give In, that he had a 20 percent chance of survival following a brain haemorrhage.

He revealed he just slumped and couldn't speak and was worried if he will be able to remember the past or ever speak again.

The documentary, which premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival on Saturday, March 6, and will be able to be seen in cinemas from May 27 and Amazon Prime May 28, was directed by Sir Alex’s son Jason, 51.

Speaking alongside his son during a virtual Q&A after the premiere, Sir Alex said the recovery from the operation was terrifying.
“I lost my voice, just could not get a word out, and that was terrifying – absolutely terrifying,” he said.

“And everything was going through my mind: is my memory going to come back? Am I ever going to speak again?”

He said: “I remember falling and so after that I don’t remember a thing.

“It was sudden. It stopped. It just stopped. It was no man’s land.”

His doctor added: “So I remember estimating his mortality - at that point in time it was 80 per cent. It was an 80 per cent chance he would not survive.”

The iconic Scotsman, who grew up in Govan, Glasgow, also revealed in the well-anticipated documentary how he went “off the rails” as a youngster playing for Rangers - and became estranged from his father for two years due to his partying antics.

Sir Alex revealed: “I started to… how do I put it? I went off the rails a bit. Out on the town an all.
“I started going out Friday nights even, even the night before a game.
“My dad would say, ‘Where are you going?’, I’d say ‘I’m going out dancing’… He said, ‘You can’t go out dancing if you’ve got a game tomorrow.’

“Well I said, ‘I’m on the reserves and it doesn’t mean a lot, you know’, and that’s when we fell out.

“It got to the point when he said, ‘Go your own way! And we’ll see what happens… and then we didn’t talk to one another for two years between 1961 and 1963 - we didn’t talk.

“And then one night I went out and I got drunk. I ended up in jail. I went to court. I got fined £3. I was a black sheep.

“It’s always been in the back of my head, at that period. I’ve always regretted it.

“With that sort of background and upbringing I had, I surrendered.”
