Mason Greenwood has committed his long-term future to Manchester United by signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2025.

The 19-year-old English striker, who made his first-team debut in March 2019 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has already made 82 appearances for the club and has netted 21 times.

After signing another four years with the option of a further 12 months, Greenwood said: 'When you join the club at seven years old, you just dream of playing for the first-team one day. I've worked so hard to reach this level and the last two years have been amazing.

'There is so much that I want to achieve in the game and I know that this is the perfect environment to play my football.

'With the support from the manager, his coaching staff and so many great players to learn from; I know that I am developing every single day. There is a lot more to come from myself and this team and I am so committed to working hard week in, week out to help the group achieve success.

'I want to repay the club for the support that everyone has given me over the years and show everyone just what I am capable of.'

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added: 'Mason is a fantastic talent and yet another fine example of the type of player that our Academy produces.

'He has made great progress this season, showing real maturity and adaptability to his game, which has seen him develop into one of the best young players in the country.

'Whilst it is easy for people outside of the club to forget that Mason is just 19, it is our job as coaches to ensure he reaches his phenomenal potential and every step we take is to help him along that path.

'Mason is naturally gifted and has a brilliant attitude; we know how important he is going to be for Manchester United over the coming seasons.'

Greenwood, who has been at the club since the age of seven is the club's youngest-ever goalscorer in European competition, after scoring against Astana in September 2019 at 17 years, 353 days.

Southampton vs Chelsea: Tuchel makes promise to Christian Pulisic ahead of EPL clash

on
 February 16, 2021

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has promised winger, Christian Pulisic, that he will have an “important impact” on his squad ahead of their Premier League clash with Southampton on Saturday.

Tuchel left Pulisic on the bench for Chelsea’s 2-0 victory against Newcastle United in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
Pulisic, who played under Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund, is yet to start a Premier League match since the former Paris Saint-Germain coach replaced Frank Lampard as Chelsea manager in January 2021.

The 22-year-old was handed his first start in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Barnsley in the FA Cup fifth-round fixture last weekend but he was back on the bench against Newcastle as two goals from Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner gave Tuchel’s men all three points against the visitors.

“Today, the first change was already made in the first half from injury and Christian [Pulisic] was a very tight decision if he starts again after the cup game, or if he comes on from the bench,” Tuchel said at a post-match press conference after Chelsea’s win over Newcastle.

“We decided for another XI to start and unfortunately, we only had three changes which make it very difficult to give time to the players, to let everybody play, and to have an impact with the changes of fresh legs.

“That makes it difficult because the third change we didn’t want to use too early.

“We did like what we always do during the match, we only think about how to win the match.

“He deserves to start, or to come in but I could only use three guys. I hope he keeps on going and he will make an important impact for us in the future.”

Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle United: Werner ends goal drought as Blues breeze into top four

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

15 February 2021,

Timo Werner scored his first Premier League goal since November as his instrumental display helped Chelsea to a 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United.

Werner's drought, which stretched back to a 4-1 win over Sheffield United on November 7, has been well documented but he got the goal his performance deserved in a routine victory.
His strike followed a 31st-minute Olivier Giroud opener set up by Werner, with Newcastle never threatening a fightback after two goals in the space of eight minutes.

Chelsea comfortably completed a league double over Newcastle and move into the top four as a result of a fifth successive win under Thomas Tuchel, who is unbeaten in six since taking over from Frank Lampard.

A bright Chelsea start saw Dwight Gayle forced to head Cesar Azpilicueta's goal-bound header behind for a corner from which Tammy Abraham sent a free header well wide.

Abraham was forced off through injury in the 20th minute having earlier gone down under a strong but fair challenge from Jamaal Lascelles, with VAR rejecting claims for a penalty.

Werner spurned an excellent chance when he stretched to meet Marcos Alonso's headed pass but only succeeded in skewing it wide.
But he created Chelsea's opener on the half-hour, his low cross falling into the path of Giroud, who lashed into an unguarded net on his 100th Premier League appearance as a substitute.

Werner then lifted a half-volley narrowly over the crossbar but his drought was finally ended as Mason Mount's corner deflected into his path at the far post and he got just enough contact to turn the ball over the line before Karl Darlow could claw it away.

Newcastle were more of a threat in the second half, Kepa Arrizabalaga forced into a diving save from Joe Willock, but the three points were never in doubt for Chelsea.

What does it mean? Tuchel continues turnaround
Tougher tests await Chelsea, who were in command here from the kick-off, notably next week when they will face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League before meeting Manchester United.

But the manner in which they swept Newcastle aside is cause for further optimism that the good form under Tuchel can be sustained. A meek display from the visitors suggests at a prolonged fight against relegation, with Fulham gaining ground on the 17th-placed Magpies.

Wait over for Werner
Werner's goal was his first in exactly 1,000 minutes in the league and ended a run of 31 attempts without finding the net. It was just reward for an energetic all-round display from the Germany international.

Newcastle offer nothing
Newcastle have experienced something of a revival in fortunes in recent weeks but their lack of an attacking threat here was stark. Steve Bruce's men failed to muster a shot on target in the first half and signs of life after the restart did not yield anything tangible.

Key Opta Facts:
- Chelsea have won eight consecutive home top-flight matches against an opponent (Newcastle) for the first time since winning nine in a row against West Brom between 1984 and 2013.

- Thomas Tuchel has picked up 13 points from his first five Premier League games in charge of Chelsea (W4 D1), level with Jose Mourinho's first five with the club and bettered only by Carlo Ancelotti and Maurizio Sarri (15 pts each).

- The German is just the third manager to see his team concede just one goal in his first five games as a boss in the Premier League, after Mourinho with Chelsea and Peter Taylor with Leicester (no manager has shipped no goals in their first five games in charge in the competition).

- In his 100th Premier League appearance as a substitute, Chelsea's Olivier Giroud scored his 21st goal in the competition from the bench, with only Jermain Defoe netting more (24).

- Giroud has netted nine Premier League goals against Newcastle, his joint-best return against an opponent in the competition (also 9 v Aston Villa)

.
What's next?
Saturday sees Chelsea visit Southampton, Newcastle visit Old Trafford to take on Manchester United a day later.

Bayern Munich 3-3 Arminia Bielefeld: Davies salvages thrilling draw for world champions

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

15 February 2021,

Bayern Munich battled back to claim a 3-3 draw against Arminia Bielefeld in a storm-laden Bundesliga thriller.

Greeted by heavy snow on their return from Club World Cup glory, Bayern were caught cold by their relegation-threatened opponents as debutant Michel Vlap and Amos Pieper stunningly gave Arminia a 2-0 half-time lead.

Robert Lewandowski scored his 25th Bundesliga goal of the season in sumptuous fashion three minutes into the second period, although substitute Christian Gebauer swiftly replied for Uwe Neuhaus' men.

Corentin Tolisso and Alphonso Davies continued the flow of easy-on-the-eye goals, but Bayern could not find a winner.

Manuel Prietl reacted quickest when Cedric Brunner's ninth-minute long throw was partially cleared and Vlap - a loan signing from Anderlecht - controlled his drilled pass superbly before emphatically smashing beyond Manuel Neuer.
Bayern had the chance to regroup shortly afterwards as snow was swept off the pitch lines and the officials reverted to orange match balls.
Tolisso almost capitalised when Leroy Sane swung a cross through the blizzard to cause confusion in the Arminia box.

But Bayern were left with a snow-covered mountain to climb when Pieper was left unchallenged to head home Vlap's left-wing corner for his first ever Bundesliga goal.
The groundstaff hurried along a half-time thaw, allowing Bayern to make their class tell early in the second half.

Stefan Ortega Moreno got down sharply to thwart Sane before Lewandowski's exquisite chest control and volleyed finish from David Alaba's chip left the goalkeeper with no chance.

Remarkably, Arminia restored their two-goal advantage within a minute - Andreas Voglsammer tearing past Bouna Sarr to deliver a pinpoint low cross that gave Gebauer - another man opening his account for the club - a simple finish.

Sane and Tolisso combined again for the latter to head home before the hour, while Kingsley Coman was providing a similar threat from the other wing as he had a venomous drive tipped over.
In the 70th minute, Sane got to the byline and his right-footed cross was cleared only as far as Davies, who fizzed a magnificent half-volley into the bottom left corner.

Back came the away side and only a marginal offside against Fabian Klos denied Sergio Cordova a fourth, before they successfully held out for the point their endeavours deserved.
What does it mean? Embarrassment averted for Flick's champions

Bayern are five points ahead of RB Leipzig having given a handy demonstration of exactly why they have decided to sign the second-place team's star central defender Dayot Upamecano.

Arminia will rue what might have been having appeared in sight of a first win at Bayern since March 1979. They remain third bottom but only on goal difference, plus they have a game in hand on Hertha Berlin in 15th.

Wing wizards bail out Bayern
For all their defensive frailties, the relentless attacking threat Bayern posed after the snow cleared meant they always looked likely to get something. Much of this was down to Sane and Coman, who attempted 20 dribbles between them over the course of the contest, completing 10. Sane made two key passes, including the assist for Tolisso's goal before playing a vital role in the equaliser.

Sarr too easy
Three clean sheets in four league matches suggested Bayern had tightened up from their early season defensive struggles but they were frequently wide open here, with Sarr failing to impress at right-back. Making his first Bundesliga appearance since November, the former Marseille player lost possession 14 times and was tellingly substituted immediately after failing to prevent Arminia's third goal.

Key Opta facts
- Bayern have scored 61 goals after 21 Bundesliga games – only Hamburg have previously matched that total, back in 1981-82 - but no team has managed more at the same stage of a season.
- Bayern have gained 19 points from losing position in this campaign, more than any other team.

- Arminia became just the third promoted team to score three or more goals in an away game against Bayern in their Allianz Arena – only Stuttgart (4-1 in May 2018) and Fortuna Dusseldorf in November 2018 (3-3) did so previously.

- After nine defeats in a row in Bundesliga away games against Bayern, Arminia avoided defeat in Munich for the first time since February 1985 – back then the game also ended in a 3-3-draw.
- Robert Lewandowski has now scored 25 goals, more than any other player after 21 games.

What's next

Arminia host Wolfsburg on Friday a day before Bayern travel to take on another top-four hopeful in Eintracht Frankfurt.

Rumour Has It: Real Madrid plot €90m Haaland move

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

15 February 2021,

Real Madrid are reportedly planning a €90million move for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland ahead of next season.

Haaland, 20, is being targeted by Europe's biggest clubs after starring for the Bundesliga outfit.
Madrid are ready to make a move for Haaland ahead of 2021-22.

TOP STORY – REAL MADRID PLAN €90M HAALAND MOVE

Real Madrid are plotting a €90m move for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, according to ABC.
The report says the LaLiga giants will attempt to get Luka Jovic, who is on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, or Mariano Diaz to be part of the deal.
Haaland has scored 23 goals in as many games for Dortmund this season.

ROUND-UP
- After landing Dayot Upamecano, Bayern Munich have other targets in mind. Bild reports the Bundesliga giants are also interested in Norwich City full-back Max Aarons, Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus, Rennes' Eduardo Camavinga and Lucien Agoume, who is on loan at Spezia from Inter. The Daily Mail also says Bayern are stepping up their pursuit of Aarons.

- David Luiz looks set to extend his Arsenal stay. The Independent claims the Premier League side are set to offer the defender another extension, with his deal expiring at season's end.

- Staying at Arsenal and Alexandre Lacazette's future at the club seems uncertain. The Daily Express reports Arsenal have been told they can sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard for just £15m.

- Without a club since leaving Trabzonspor in March last year, Daniel Sturridge has been offered to Newcastle United, according to 90min. West Brom and Sheffield United are also reportedly interested in Sturridge.

Barcelona 1-4 Paris Saint-Germain: Mbappe hat-trick leaves Barca requiring another 'Remontada'

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

16 February 2021,

Kylian Mbappe scored a remarkable hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to batter Barcelona 4-1 away from home in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The Parisians were back at Camp Nou for the first time since their humiliating Champions League collapse in 2017 when they were thumped 6-1 after winning the first leg 4-0, and they got a semblance of revenge with an emphatic victory.

Lionel Messi reached 20 goals for a 13th successive season when putting Barca ahead just before the half-hour mark with a penalty, but PSG were far more of a threat in attack and fully deserved the equaliser that Mbappe netted with aplomb.

Mbappe doubled his personal tally in the second half and the similarly lively Moise Kean got PSG's third soon after, before the France star completed his treble with a sumptuous finish on the break that will likely put the tie beyond Barca, though they have pulled off more unlikely comebacks before.

The early exchanges passed with little drama as the two sides respectably sparred, but the contest burst into life when Barca then opened the scoring in the 27th minute, Messi finding the top-right corner with a penalty awarded after Layvin Kurzawa accidentally tripped Frenkie de Jong.
But PSG soon levelled as Mbappe brought down Marco Verratti's flicked pass and lashed in after evading Clement Lenglet.

Antoine Griezmann could not restore Barca's lead when he shot wide after a long solo run, though it was PSG who finished the half on top.

Moise Kean and Kurzawa both forced fine saves from Marc-Andre ter Stegen, while Mauro Icardi headed agonisingly wide on the stroke of half-time.
PSG carved Barca open again early in the second half, Icardi teeing up Kean with a clever flick only to see Ter Stegen make a fingertip save to deny him.
The visitors finally went in front, and deservedly so, with 25 minutes to go – Mbappe slamming in from about 10 yards after Alessandro Florenzi's cutback was deflected into his path by Gerard Pique.

It quickly got worse for Barca, as Kean nodded in Leandro Paredes' inviting free-kick delivery to give Ronald Koeman's men a mountain to climb.

Mbappe rounded off an incredible night for PSG five minutes from time, curling a gorgeous first-time effort into the top-right corner after Julian Draxler led a devastating counter.

Barca must accept PSG have 'a more complete team', says Koeman

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

17 February 2021,

Ronald Koeman paid tribute to Kylian Mbappe while admitting Barcelona must accept Paris Saint-Germain have a "more complete team" following their Champions League rout at Camp Nou.
PSG - last season's runners-up - took a commanding lead in the last-16 tie thanks to hat-trick hero Mbappe, who fuelled a stunning 4-1 demolition on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi, whose has been heavily linked with PSG, opened the scoring via a penalty before the French visitors seized control courtesy of Mbappe and Moise Kean.

Ligue 1 champions PSG outclassed and overpowered Barca to put one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals ahead of the return leg on March 10.

Barca head coach Koeman acknowledged PSG's superiority was clear to see and conceded the embattled LaLiga giants have some way to go in order to compete with Mauricio Pochettino's men.
"They were superior, they were very efficient, in particular thanks to to Mbappe," Koeman said.

"The first half was balanced. At 1-0, Ousmane [Dembele] had a good opportunity. In the second part of the match, we had some defence problems.
"They showed that they were superior, with the ball and especially physically.

"They had a more complete team than ours. We have to accept it and keep improving. We know that can happen. This team is ahead of us."
Barca famously came back from a 4-0 first-leg deficit to send PSG crashing out of the Champions League with a 6-1 second-leg triumph in 2017.
'La Remontada' or 'the comeback' has become forged in European football legend but Koeman has little hope of a similar turnaround at the Parc des Princes.

"Losing 1-4 is very difficult. There are very few possibilities to come back," he said.
"We are missing things to be at the best level, especially in the Champions League."

Barcelona have never progressed in a European knock-out tie after losing their first home game.
It is the first time Barcelona have lost back-to-back home games in the Champions League/European Cup and the first time they have conceded three or more goals in back-to-back home games in European competition.

Meanwhile, Barca have conceded four goals in a knock-out match at home in the Champions League and the second in the European Cup/Champions League after a 4-0 loss against Dinamo Kiev in November 1997.

Portugal return: Pirlo says Ronaldo is ‘keen to score even more’

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

17 February 2021,

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo will play in his native Portugal for Juventus for the first time on Wednesday and coach Andrea Pirlo is expecting something special from his talisman.
Juventus meet Porto in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday, with the Old Lady determined to improve upon last year's continental exit at this stage to Lyon.

Madeira-born Ronaldo, 36, has not played club football in Portugal since November 2016 when Real Madrid defeated his former club Sporting CP 2-1 in the Champions League.

Pirlo said Ronaldo's return home had provided added motivation for Portugal's all-time top scorer and current international captain.

"[Cristiano Ronaldo] is back home in Portugal," Pirlo said on Tuesday. "He is keen to score even more.

"He proved in the Coppa Italia and with his history in the Champions League, that he lives on the adrenaline of the knockout stages. He is proud to be back home and wants to show them who Cristiano Ronaldo still is."

Ronaldo netted a double in Juve's Coppa Italia semi-final victory over Inter earlier this month, while he is a five-time Champions League winner (four times with Real Madrid and once with Manchester United).

However, continental success has eluded Ronaldo since his move to Juventus in 2018, having lost in the 2018-19 quarters to Ajax and the 2019-20 last 16 to Lyon.

Remarkably since his move from Madrid to Turin, Ronaldo has scored all seven of Juventus' goals in the Champions League knockout stages, which was not lost on skipper Giorgio Chiellini.
"Cristiano is special, but I am not the one who discovered that," Chiellini said.

"He has been added value for us. We have been lucky to train with him to see every day the little secrets helping him become the true champion he is.

"Tomorrow we will play in Portugal, his home, I hope he will have even more motivation to perform well and score."

Mbappe's hat-trick jersey gifted to UFC star Khabib after PSG rout Barca

[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

17 February 2021,

The Paris Saint-Germain jersey worn by Kylian Mbappe when his hat-trick helped humiliate Barcelona could have sold for millions at auction but the French ace simply handed it over as a gift to UFC great Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Mbappe's devastating display of pace, power and clinical finishing crushed Barca in PSG's thumping 4-1 triumph in the opening leg of the Champions League last-16 tie, and left the hat-trick hero as the talk of the football world following one of the most scintillating performances of his glittering young career.

Uncertainty has been circling Mbappe, whose PSG contract expires in June 2022 amid strong links to Real Madrid as well as Liverpool, and the World Cup winner clearly had no intention of making the shirt a centrepiece of his own personal collection following Tuesday's exploits.

Instead, Mbappe presented the jersey to mixed-martial arts star Khabib after the UFC's longest-reigning lightweight champion watched the action unfold from the stands in Barcelona, alongside Leeds United's majority owner Andrea Radrizzani at Camp Nou.

Khabib recently vacated his title and retired from UFC competition, revealing he wants to switch the gloves for boots and give professional football a try after discussing the career change with the likes of UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin and Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The unbeaten Russian fighter previously told Match TV: "To play football on a professional level is a childhood dream. Of course, I have such a wish. Football is the king of sports after all."
Mbappe had written a message to Khabib on the jersey, and the man also known as 'the Eagle' was quick to show off his new prized possession to his 27.3million Instagram followers.

Nagelsmann: Leipzig overturning 2-0 deficit isn't impossible
[Image: svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMTE2MiIga...0iMS4xIi8+]
[Image: image?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.livescore.c...=3840&q=75]

17 February 2021,

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann says it is "not impossible" for his side to overturn their 2-0 first-leg deficit against Liverpool in the Champions League last 16.

Leipzig were beaten 2-0 in their 'home tie' in Budapest by the English champions, who will host the German club in Liverpool in early March for the second leg.

Angelino hit the post early on for RB Leipzig before Alisson was forced into a good save to deny Christopher Nkunku in the second.

Liverpool then capitalised on Leipzig mistakes with quick-fire goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane offering the Reds a major advantage ahead of the return leg.

"We know the result, but I think we played a good game," Nagelsmann said. "We'll take this with us to the second leg.

"I already want to say before somebody asks the question: The situation is not easier of course, but not impossible either.
"We will do everything and try to reach the next round."

Leipzig had 12 shots to 10, while Liverpool had three shots on target to two and also edged possession in a tight game, where Nagelsmann said capitalising on chances was the difference.
"We needed two, three minutes after these two mistakes," the 33-year-old coach said. "It’s the classic question to ask, if these mistakes will be punished at this high level.

"This is basically punished on every level. Then we needed five, six minutes to bounce back. It was good that we didn't concede a third goal. Then my boys did well again."

Quote:[b]Luigi Sartor Arrested For Growing 106 Marijuana Plants At Home

A former Italian football star, Luigi Sartor, has been put under house arrest after police allegedly found him growing marijuana with an accomplice.[/b]

Italian media say Sartor and Marco Mantovani, both aged 46, are to face trial next month. Sartor made no statement at a court hearing.

Police reportedly found 106 marijuana plants at Sartor's mountain cottage.

Sartor was a defender with AS Roma, Parma, Juventus and Inter Milan. He was arrested in a village near Parma.

The police raid took place on Friday in Lesignano Palmia, south-west of Parma in northern Italy. The plants, kept in what appeared to be an abandoned property, could have produced 2kg (4.4 pounds) of marijuana.

Investigators' suspicions were raised when the cottage's power supply was doubled and its lights were seen to be on at night.

They stopped Sartor's car and, reports say, smelled the same distinctive odour as was detected outside his cottage.

In 2011 Sartor was indicted for conspiracy to commit betting fraud, in a match-fixing scandal known as "Calcioscommesse". But in 2019 the investigation was ended under a statute of limitations rule.

No one will get rid of me, I'll decide when to retire' - Luis Suarez declares

Uruguay and Atletico Madrid star, Luis Suarez has said only he will decide when he retires as he will continue playing among "football's elite" for years to come and that "no one will get rid of him" until he's ready.

Suarez completed a €6 million switch to Atletico from Barcelona in the summer after six-years at Camp Nou.

He actually wanted to stay at Barcelona but was forced out by Barca coach Ronald Koeman, though he has managed to silence his doubters at Atletico saying he has no plans to end his career in the near future.

"I still feel like I'm enjoying this moment that I'm in today, in football's elite," Suarez told ESPN.

"Being at Atletico, you're in football's elite. Some people didn't believe that I could still be at this level. I've got the same enthusiasm.
"I hope that this year, next year and for however many years it is, I keep competing and giving my best, until you realise that you've gone as far as you can.
"But no one will get rid of me. I'll decide when I go."

Suarez has helped Atletico rise to the top of the La Liga standings and reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

He has scored 16 goals in his first 22 outings across all competitions for Atletico.

"I didn't expect to be in this moment that I'm in with Atletico today, but I'm enjoying it a lot," Suarez said of his impressive recent performances.

"I'm grateful because the coaching staff and my teammates believe in me, they trust me, and that is something that you try to repay with goals."

Suarez claims he has already learnt many new things from coach Diego Simeone.

"Each coach obviously has their own way of being, their own football philosophy. [He] is a coach who gives players a lot of confidence, he makes you give more than you thought you could," he said of Simeone.

"When it comes to preparing for matches, he corrects a lot of things. Even for me, at my age, he still corrects me and I accept it without any problem at all, because he's the coach for a reason.
"At my age, you could think that you know everything, you've done it all, but there are tactical details that you have to learn. That's what the coach is there for."

Naomi Osaka beats Serena Williams again to deny her a shot at record-tying 24th major title at Australian Open

Naomi Osaka has just defeated Serena Williams to deny her a shot at record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title at the 2021 Australian Open.

The Japanese tennis star, 23, defeated her American opponent, 39, 6-3, 6-4 in the Australian Open semifinals at Rod Laver Arena on Thursday morning, February 18.

Osaka, who also beat Williams in the 2018 US Open final, has now reached her fourth major title match and stretched her winning streak to 20 matches by claiming the last eight points.

"I don't know if there's any little kids out here today, but I was a little kid watching her play," Osaka, 23, said about Williams, 39, "and just to be on the court playing against her, for me, is a dream."

No. 3-seed Osaka will face either No. 25 seed Karolina Muchova or 22nd-seeded American Jennifer Brady in the final.

"I could have won. I could have been up 5-love," said Williams, who instead took a 2-0 lead at the outset before dropping the next five games. "I just made so many errors."

"Too many mistakes there," she said. "Easy mistakes."

After winning her professional era-record 23rd Slam singles trophy at Melbourne Park while pregnant in 2017, Williams reached four major finals but lost them all. She also now has lost in major semifinals twice in that span.

When asked in a post-match news conference if the gesture meant farewell.

Williams said: "I don't know. If I ever say farewell, I wouldn't tell anyone, so," she said.

In a message to her fans after her loss, she wrote: "Melbourne and my Australian fans- Today was not ideal outcome or performance but it happens... I am so honored to be able to play in front of you all. Your support -your cheers, I only wish I could have done better for you today. I am forever in debt and grateful to each and everyone single one of you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I adore you."

Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare petitions IGP over a sport journalist's claim that he benefits from the LCC

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Adamu Mohammed, to investigate Sylvanus Ofekun for allegedly defaming him and also making inciteful comments capable of threatening national security.

According to the petition which was submitted to the IGP on February 16, the Minister alleged that Ofekun, a sports journalist with the moniker “Sleeky Sly” on social media, accused him of daily benefitting from Lagos Concession Company (LCC), operators of the Lekki Tollgate, which has been shut down since the October 20 gunshot incident.

The petition in part reads
Quote:“Our client was surprised when Mr. Sylvanus Ofekun, also known as Sleeky Sly, published unfounded and baseless allegations of corruption against our client through direct reference and innuendo.

Mr. Ofekun is a sports journalist who currently plies his trade with Kiss FM radio station, Abuja. The summary of the allegations was to the effect that our client was receiving constant revenues from the LCC, the managers of the Lekki Tollgate. Our client was, therefore, alleged to have deployed governmental resources to reopen the tollgate for personal profit.

According to the publication, evidence of our client’s receipt of funds from LCC could be found in bank statements, which were attached. A cursory look at the said bank statements will show that the transactions contained therein are between LCC and Loatsad Media and our client’s name did not appear in any of the transactions.

The facts can be gleaned from the public records available at relevant government agencies that our client has since 2017 relinquished all interests he had at Loatsad Promomedia Limited (as it was then known) and stepped down from its Board of Directors. It is, therefore, clear that not only were the allegations false, they were published with malice aforethought with the intent to disparage our client.”

Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry lined up as the next Bournemouth manager

Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry has reportedly been lined up as the next Bournemouth manager and it is understood he is open to the role

The Championship club are ramping up their attempts to fill a position vacated by Jason Tindall, who was sacked after six months following four straight defeats.

The 43-year-old Henry is the head coach of the MLS side CF Montréal. He has previously managed Monaco and been on Roberto Martínez’s coaching staff with Belgium.

Henry signed a two-year contract with Montréal in November 2019 but Bournemouth wants to speak to former France international.

Former Huddersfield manager David Wagner is thought to have been interviewed, while Henry’s former Arsenal teammate Patrick Vieira has also been linked with the vacancy.

Henry began his coaching career with Arsenal's youth teams before becoming Roberto Martinez's assistant with the Belgium national team. He left Belgium to take his first head coach role at his former club Monaco in 2018, but was sacked after three months in charge, having won only two league matches.
