An heavy downpour forced Muslims to abandon social distancing and other laid down procedures against spread of COVID-19 during the Eid prayers in Niger.

Hundreds of Muslim faithful had gathered at the Minna Central to observe the Eid prayers and maintained the physical distancing order before the rain started at about 10.30 am.

They were all wearing face masks and were not close to one another.

But when the rain began, all observance of physical distancing was abandoned as they all gathered into the mosque to take shelter from the rain.

In his sermon, during the two rakaat prayers, the Chief Imam of Minna Central Mosque, Sheikh Ibrahim Isa Fari, called on Muslims to continue to practice love, humility and sacrifice which the Ramadan fast was all about.

Sheikh Fari also stressed the needs for them to always abide by experts advice on coronavirus as precautionary measures to mitigate the spread of the virus.

The Special Adviser to Governor Abubakar Sani Bello on Political matters, Alhaji Nma Kolo urged the people to adhere to government’s directive on COVID-19 adding that the government would continue to work towards combating the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Kolo stated that the ban on horse riding, travelling and gatherings was still in force and anyone caught defaulting would face the wrath of the law.
