Quote:Messi Re-elected Barcelona Captain

Leo Messi will continue as the captain of Barcelona after being voted as such by his teammates.

Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto have been elected the other three skippers of the team.

Messi will wear the armband at some point during Saturday's friendly against Gimnastic de Tarragona.

Ronald Koeman called the Argentine in the morning where he informed him that he would feature in the game.

Messi is still short of fitness having joined pre-season training later than most of his teammates, so his cameo isn't expected to be long.

Quote:
Transfers Involving Nigerian Football Players So Far This Summer

Even though football clubs across the globe are grappling with the sharp drop in revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic, the transfer window has seen millions of dollars exchange hands with dozens of players switching teams.

Nigerian players have not been left out of the football transfer business, even though the country’s footballers may no longer command huge price tags or attract interest from so called big teams.

PREMIUM TIMES highlights some of the major moves made by Nigeria players in the summer transfer window

Victor Osimhen (Lille > Napoli) – €54m

The towering striker is the toast of all having commanded a staggering €54m move from Ligue 1 side Lille to Serie A giants, Napoli.

The Napoli move makes Osimhen one of the biggest transfers of this window. The former Royal Charleroi forward only spent a season with the French club, that once paraded former Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, before making the move.

He, however, left his mark with the French club, scoring 13 goals with four assists in 27 league appearances.

Already, his double hat-trick in friendly matches during the preseason has set expectations high that the 21-year old attacker will hit the ground running when Napoli kick off their Serie A campaign against Parma.

Victor Osimhen is no doubt Nigeria’s brightest shining light in the 2020-2021 transfer window.

Leon Balogun (Brighton > Glasgow Rangers)

This Nigerian international defender joined Scottish top outfit Glasgow Rangers this summer on a one year deal with an option for a second.

Balogun rarely played for Brighton after he became surplus to requirements upon his arrival from Mainz and was confined to the bench after a series of injuries.

The move to Wigan Athletic was beneficial for the towering defender as he put in a series of top performances, which helped him get into top shape again.

Capped 32 times by Nigeria, Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard, acknowledged that Leon’s wealth of international experience will boost the club after the injury to Nikola Katic and also help young defenders.

John Obi Mikel (Trabzonspor > Stoke City)
This midfield enforcer was not expected to make a return to England after he parted company with Trabzonspor, leaving the club by mutual consent. But Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill must believe that the former Nigerian international has gotten better with age.

Mikel is joining the Potters a few years after leaving Chelsea where he spent 11 years. It took some convincing from the Stoke City boss to get the former Tianjin Teda’s midfielder to come on board.

Mikel’s ability to hold on to the ball and distribute passes until an opening is created could add another dimension to Stoke’s attacking play.

If Mikel settles in quickly and combines his industry well with his versatility, the Potters might see their dream of staging a comeback to the EPL become a reality.

Fisayo Bashiru (Man City > Sheffield Wednesday)

The box-to-box midfielder’s failure to break into the star-studded Manchester City team prompted his move to Sheffield Wednesday, where he hopes to win the heart of manager Garry Monk.

Bashiru has been with the Citizens since he was eight years old, where he moved through the ranks but was unable to do enough for coach Pep Guardiola.

He represented Nigeria at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland and scored one goal in three matches as Nigeria crashed out in the round of 16.

Brown Ideye (Aris Thessaloniki > Göztepe)

Ideye joined Turkish outfit Göztepe FC in June on a two-year deal after a season with Greek side Aris Thessaloniki.

The former West Bromwich Albion striker was said to have departed Greece because he didn’t want to continue playing for peanuts.

Ideye’s recent move to Turkey makes it his eighth foreign transfer in his career as a professional player, following stints in Switzerland, France, Ukraine, England, Spain, China, and Greece.

But his move to Göztepe has been much welcome, as he is coming into the club at a time when the yellow and red side is struggling to remain in the Turkish Super Lig.

Moses Simon (Levante > Nantes) Undisclosed fee

French Ligue 1 side, FC Nantes, signed the Super Eagles winger on a permanent deal after he impressed in his season-long loan at the club.

The Canaries agreed a four year deal with the club’s Player of the Year award winner, who scored nine times and had eight assists in all competitions.

His direct play and ability to take on his marker made him a fan favourite at the Stade de la Beaujoire, gaining a decisive 40 per cent of the votes in a poll conducted to elect the club’s top performer of the campaign.

Eberechi Eze (QPR > Crystal Palace)

Eze joined Premier League side Crystal Place for a reported £20m fee on a five-year deal. This English U-20 international of Nigerian descent has been tipped to be the next big thing in the 2020-2021 Premier League season and Selhurst Park seems to be an ideal destination to achieve that.

The 22-year old scored 20 goals for QPR in 112 first-team appearances after joining in 2016, a performance that had prompted the Super Eagles’ gaffer to invite him to train with the national team.

Last season, the dark skinned midfielder was named his former club’s Supporters’ Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, and Young Player of the Year.

Felix Uduokhai (Wolfsburg > Ausburg)

Uduokhai joined another Bundesliga side Ausburg on a permanent deal after the centre back gave a good account of himself as a loanee at the club.

The 22-year old defender featured in 23 matches for the Fuggerstadter last season under the watchful eye of manager Heiko Hellish, and ensured the club stayed afloat at the end of the season.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr hopes Uduokhai will switch his allegiance to Nigeria as the search for a consistent centre back for the national team heats up.

Francis Uzoho (Deportivo la Coruna > Apoel Nicosia)

Apoel Nicosia finalised the signing of Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho on a permanent deal for three years.

Uzoho sealed the permanent deal after an 18-month loan stint at the club, laying an end to speculation about his future.

Taye Taiwo (Rops > Doxa Katokopias)

The former Olympic Marseille left fullback joined Cypriot side, Doxa Katokopias, on a one year contract after a one-season stint with Finnish side RoPS.

This move makes it the 11th professional club in Europe that Taiwo has played for in his football career.

Emem Uduok (Hajduk Split > Konyaspor)

The fringe Super Eagles winger will fight for honours in the Turkish Super Lig side Konyaspor after his parent club Hajduk Split agreed to send him on loan with an option to buy.

The winger showed promise in his first season at Hajduk Split, scoring 11 goals and three assists in 32 official appearances for the six-time Croatian champions.

But the fleet-footed winger has failed to live up to those high standards and was sent on loan, where he can enjoy regular playing time.

Muyiwa Olabiran (Dynamo Kiev > Olimpik Donetsk )

The Ivorian-born Nigeria U-20 striker joined Olimpik Donetsk on a loan deal after he struggled to tie down a regular shirt at Dynamo Kiev.

Zaidu Sanusi (Santa Clara > FC Porto)

Sanusi made a sensational move from Santa Clara to Portuguese giants FC Porto on a five years deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-years old left-full back signed a contract to keep him at the club till the end of the 2024-2025 season.

Afeez Aremu (IK Start > St. Pauli)

Aremu sealed a move to German second tier side St. Pauli on a two-year deal after a promising campaign at IK Start.

The holding midfielder played a total of 63 matches for IK Start in his two seasons at the club and scored five goals with one assist.

Tyronne Ebuehi (Benfica > FC Twente)

After a protracted injury spell that kept him out of action for over two years, the right-back has been offered a route back to revive his club career.

Ebuehi, who was born and raised in the Netherlands but has since switched allegiance to play for Nigeria, is looking to use this opportunity to relaunch his career.

Oghenekaro Etebo (Stoke City > Galatasaray)

The former Warri Wolves star is yet to hit the high notes abroad despite his huge potential. Though contracted with Stoke City until 2023, nothing suggests that the Nigerian midfielder has a future with the Potters.

Etebo played the second half of last season in the La Liga with Getafe but now he is set for a fresh challenge with Turkish giants Galatasaray.

More Nigerian players are still expected to make moves across clubs, especially with the extended window brought in to cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

Naomi Osaka has won her second U.S. Open title at this year’s tournament after beating Victoria Azarenka.
The 22-year-old Japanese tennis star battled back from a set down against Azarenka to lift her second US Open title in three years with a 1-6 6-3 6-3 victory at Flushing Meadows.

Speaking after her victory, Osaka said she felt it would be very embarrassing to lose the game under an hour.
She also said it was a tough match for her, adding that she was happy to have had an opportunity to play with Azarenka.

“I just thought it would be very embarrassing to lose this in under an hour.

“I always see everyone sort of collapse after match point, but I always think you may injure yourself, so I wanted to do it safely.

“That was a really tough match for me.

“And yes, really inspiring for me because I used to watch Azarenka play here when I was younger.

“So, am happy to have had an opportunity to play with her.

“It was great game and I learned a lot,” Osaka said
Osaka who is already the highest-earning female athlete in the world, has added another £2.3 million in prize money to her fortune as she becomes the first Asian player to win three major titles, surpassing Chinese trailblazer, Li Na.

She won the 2018 U.S. Open and the 2019 Australian Open.

PSG vs Marseille: Neymar, four others sent off as Ligue 1 champions lose again

on
 September 14, 2020
[Image: neymar-1.jpg]

Paris Saint-Germain’s nightmare start to the season continued on Sunday, as they lost 1-0 to rivals, Marseille.

Florian Thauvin netted the only goal of the encounter in the 31st minute.

Neymar was one of the five players that was sent off, in what became a very feisty Ligue 1 fixture at the Parc des Princes.

PSG midfielder, Leandro Paredes, was sent off for lashing out at Darío Benedetto, which sparked a melee between the two teams.

Full-back Layvin Kurzawa saw red after repeatedly hitting Jordan Amavi, who was also dismissed for kicking the Frenchman.

However, after the four players involved in the brawl were all sent off, the referee conducted a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review and Neymar was shown red after replays revealed that he hit Marseille’s Álvaro González in the back of the head.

Neymar sarcastically clapped at the referee as he left the field, before telling the assistant referee he was racially abused by Gonzalez.

The defeat means PSG are in the relegation zone after two matches played of their title defence. Thomas Tuchel’s side had lost to Lens last weekend.

Mourinho takes swipe at Victor Osimhen for refusing to join Tottenham

 September 14, 2020

Tottenham Hotspur boss, Jose Mourinho, has taken a swipe at Nigeria striker, Victor Osimhen, for rejecting a move to the club because he does not want to compete with Harry Kane for a spot, SportingLife reports.

Osimhen eventually joined Napoli from Lille this summer.

But his agent, Ariyo Igbayiola, had admitted that he held talks with Mourinho before completing the transfer to Serie A.

Igbayiola says he informed Spurs that Osimhen will only join if Kane leaves the club.

However, speaking on the lack of attacking options in his squad, Mourinho said he will not sign a striker who is afraid to compete with Kane.

“The point is not me convincing the striker, it’s the striker convincing me.

“And if the striker is afraid to come to Tottenham and the striker is afraid of competition, then I don’t want the striker.

“If he says I don’t want to go because I don’t want to be in a squad where we have Harry Kane and Sonny, (Erik) Lamela, Lucas (Moura), I don’t want to go to that squad, then goodbye,” Mourinho said.

Gonzalez Reacts To Neymar Racism Claims..

It rained red cards yesterday at Le Parc des Princes as psg lost by a goal to Marseille.
Neymar has accused Marseille player Gonzalez of racially abusing him which lead to a faceoff on the pitch.

Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez has taken to social media to defend himself after Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar accused him of making racist remarks.

Neymar was sent off for slapping Gonzalez in injury-time, who he accused of racism as he left the field and on social media following the match.

According to Gonzalez;
"There is no place for racism. A clean career and with many team-mates and friends on a day to day basis. Sometimes you have to learn how to lose and accept it on the field. Incredible three points today, Allez l'OM thank you family,"

Tuchel was asked about the incident at his post-match news conference.

"What I heard? He [Neymar] told me that it was some racist insult, but I did not hear anything on the pitch,"

Do you think Neymar was truly abused? or he just cant handle defeat like Gonzalez said....

Barcelona warns Luis Suarez not to remain at Camp Nou

on
 September 14, 2020
[Image: Luis-Suarez.jpg]

Barcelona are ready to make Luis Suarez watch the entire 2020/2021 season from the stands, if he does not leave the club, according to Sport.

Suarez has been told by new manager, Ronald Koeman, that he is surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou.

The 33-year-old has been in discussions with Juventus over a move, but the negotiations have slowed down in recent days.

Suarez has been training away from the first team as Koeman continues to freeze him out.

He was left out of Barca’s pre-season 3-1 win over Gimnastic on Saturday.

The LaLiga giants have been in talks with Suarez and his representatives over the termination of his contract, which has one year to go before it expires next summer.

Despite his transfer saga with Koeman, Suarez has carried on training with the team, with the forward keen on remaining professional until the last minute of being a Barcelona player.

Alex Iwobi should look for a new club - Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze advises

Former West Bromwich Albion and Super Eagles defender, Ifeanyi Udeze, has advised Everton winger, Alex Iwobi to leave the club after failing to secure sufficient game time with the Premier League side.

Iwobi, 24, joined Everton last year for £28 million after ending his stay with Arsenal. But he has struggled to make much of an impact with the club.
Surprisingly he was not included in the starting line up or bench in Everton's 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and Udeze who is now a broadcaster with Brila Fm feels it is time the Super Eagles star to leave.

“I think Iwobi should look for another club especially with James Rodriguez signed it will be difficult for him to play,” Udeze said on Brila FM.
“Imagine against Tottenham he did not make the bench and even the squad. So for me, he should start looking for another club.
“It’s painful for me but as it is, I think the best thing is for him to go elsewhere.”

Iwobi made 100 Premier League appearances for Arsenal following his promotion to the first team in 2015 before leaving the side for Everton.

Iwobi has featured for England U16, U17 and U18 before switching his allegiance to the Nigeria national team in October 2015.

EPL: Werner, Pulisic doubtful for Chelsea’s game against Liverpool

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, might be without Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic, for their next Premier League clash against Liverpool.

Werner suffered a dead leg on his debut against Brighton on Monday, while Christian Pulisic has had a setback.

Lampard’s side began the season with a 3-1 win at the Amex Stadium.

Werner picked up the knock while winning the penalty for the first goal.

“Timo took the knock when he won the penalty,” Lampard told reporters.

“It’s more of a dead leg we hope, so I wouldn’t think too much in terms of next week there.”

Chelsea were also without Pulisic for the Brighton trip. The American has been out since pulling his hamstring in the FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal on August 1.

“Christian was training with us last week, but he had a little bit of discomfort a couple of days ago where he was trying to train with us and being in contention for today, it would’ve been a big ask for today,” Lampard said.

“We’ll have to see so that’s one. I don’t have big news on at the minute. We’ll see.”

PSG star, Neymar ‘faces seven game ban’ for punching Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez amid racism row

Paris Saint Germain forward, Neymar Jnr could be slapped with a seven-game ban after he was sent off for punching Marseille's Alvaro Gonzalez during their Ligue 1 game on Sunday.

The Brazilian superstar was one of five players sent off after a huge brawl broke out between Argentine pair Dario Benedetto and Leandro Paredes, and then extended to other players at the end of PSG's shock 1-0 defeat to Marseille.

Neymar accused Spanish defender Alvaro of racially abusing him during the clash. He claimed Alvaro called him a 'monkey son of a b****'.

But after being dismissed by VAR for his attack on Alvaro, RMC Sport reports the 28-year-old could be suspended for as many as seven matches.

A statement issued on Monday read: "Paris Saint-Germain strongly supports Neymar Jr who reported being subjected to racist abuse by an opposing player.

"The club restates that there is no place for racism in society, in football or in our lives and calls on everyone to speak out against all forms of racism throughout the world."

Neymar also issued a statement on his Instagram story where he explained that he 'could not leave without doing something'.

He added: "Yesterday I wanted those in charge of the game (referees, assistants) to position themselves impartially and understand that there is no longer such a place for a prejudiced attitude.

"Racism exists, it exists, but we have to stop it. No more, enough!

"I accept my punishment because I should have followed the path of clean football. I hope, on the other hand, that the offender will also be punished.

"The guy was a fool, I also acted like a fool for letting me getting involved in that."

Marseille also released a statement denying Gonzales is racist and slamming death threats he has received in wake of the clash.

It read: "Alvaro Gonzalez is not racist, he demonstrated it to us by his daily behaviour since joining the club, as his teammates have already testified.

"The club remains at the disposal of the disciplinary committee to fully cooperate in the investigation of all the events which marked this meeting, and the 24 hours which preceded them.

"This controversy is serious and already has serious consequences.

"The club thus condemns the dissemination of the private telephone numbers of Alvaro Gonzalez and his relatives this night on Brazilian media and social networks, giving rise since to constant harassment, consisting in particular of death threats."

The French governing body, LFP, will review the incident before handing out an appropriate sanction to the players involved in the brawl.

Fans set to be allowed to return to stadiums from October 1 in the UK, government letter confirms

The UK government is set to allow fans return to watch live sport next month amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a letter written to a Conservative MP from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, the number permitted now is set to be heavily reduced to around 1,000 - 2,500 instead of the initial plans for up to 30 percent of a venue.

Nigel Huddleston of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport wrote to fellow Conservative MP and former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch to underline the plan to continue to open sporting events for a small number of spectators from October 1.

'I know how important this is for sports clubs for whom paying spectators are vital,' Huddleston wrote to Crouch. 'Subject to public health conditions, we hope to open elite sport fixtures including the National League for socially distanced spectators under covid-secure conditions from October 1.'

The Times reports that in the Premier League, Tottenham and Aston Villa are particularly frustrated with the new plans for fans being restricted to just 1,000.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Havertz admits EPL tougher than football in Germany

Chelsea’s new boy, Kai Havertz, has admitted the Premier League is “much tougher” than the Bundesliga.

The 21-year-old only completed a £70million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the month.

However, Blues boss Frank Lampard started Havertz away at Brighton on Monday night.

Goals from Jorginho, Reece James and Kurt Zouma ensured Chelsea won 3-1 at the Amex, but Havertz struggled to impact the game in the final third.

Speaking after the victory, Havertz claimed he was still adapting to the intensity of the English game.
“It was a very tough game, very difficult because I had long holidays and I came back and trained for five or six days with the team,” Havertz told the Evening Standard.

“More important is that we won so I am very happy to make my debut.

“The Premier League is much tougher than the Bundesliga. I have seen that in training and saw it in the game as well. But I am happy to play 80 minutes and hopefully next week I will continue.”

Chelsea has been active this summer, signing Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva.

However, one player who continues to be linked with the Blues is West Ham and England midfielder Declan Rice.

Despite failing to influence the game too much, Lampard praised the work-rate of the German, who played 80 minutes before being replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Arsenal have confirmed to sign a new 3-year contract with Aubameyang.

The new deal is thought to be worth £250,000 per week for the next three years.

That will place him behind only Mesut Ozil - on £350,000 per week - as the second-highest paid Arsenal player.

Aubameyang secured Arsenal's player of the year award for last season with his 29 goals.

That included 22 in the Premier League, only Jamie Vardy got more, and all four Gunners goals in the semi-finals and final of the FA Cup.

Neymar and four other players banned over PSG brawl as LFP investigates racism allegations

The LFP Disciplinary Committee in France has revealed punishment for the players involved in the mass brawl that overshadowed Paris Saint-Germain's clash with Marseille last weekend.

Neymar was one of five players sent off after a fight broke out between Argentine pair Dario Benedetto and Leandro Paredes and then extended to other players at the end of PSG's shock 1-0 defeat to Marseille last Sunday.

On Wednesday, September, 16, the French football governing announced PSG full-back, Layvin Kurzawa, has been slapped with a six-game ban for his role after he kicked Jordan Amavi.

Amavi was slapped with a three-match ban with Marseille team-mate Dario Benedetto receiving a one-match ban.

Brazilian striker, Neymar, who was caught by VAR hitting Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez during the clash, received a two-match ban with a suspended sentence with Leandro Paredes handed the same punishment.

Neymar accused Gonzalez of racially abusing him during the clash. He claimed Alvaro called him a 'monkey son of a b****', but Gonzalez has since denied the claims.

The LFP will investigate those allegations against the Spanish defender, and also look into claims filed by Marseille that PSG star Angel Di Maria spat at Gonzalez.

Liverpool Agree £25m Thiago Alcantara Deal

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich for at least £20m, plus £5m in add-ons, on a four-year contract.

Thiago, 29, joined the German giants from Barcelona in 2013 and played in last season's Champions League final victory over Paris St-Germain.
He is set to wear the number six shirt at Anfield.

Thiago would be the Premier League champions' second summer signing, after
Greece left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

The £20m will be paid over the length of Thiago's contract and the extra £5m will depend on the Reds winning the Premier League and Champions League success.
When asked about a potential move for the Spaniard last week, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "I cannot end speculation as long as the transfer window is open.

"It is nice that we are linked with him but that is pretty much it really. It is because he is a good player and Liverpool is a big club, so that is nice."

Thiago started his career at Barcelona and was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United when David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, but the move did not transpire and he went to Germany instead.

As well as the Champions League, he has won seven consecutive Bundesliga titles, four German Cups and the Club World Cup with Bayern.

Quote:Messi Celebrates 20 Years In Barcelona

On the September 17, 2000, Lionel Messi arrived in Barcelona.

Accompanied by his father, the young Argentine's dream was to sign for Barcelona.

It wasn't an easy process, but eventually the two sides came to an agreement and Messi joined the club's junior ranks.

From there he became the best player in the world and arguably one of the greatest to have ever played the game.

In those 20 years, he has won everything with Barcelona, on a collective as well as an individual level.

Messi has been a great champion and far exceeded the dreams he had when flying over from Rosario that day.

And there have been some incredible moments that no one will forget.

Messi's debut for the club came under Frank Rijkaard in 2004 at just 17, with his first goal coming against Albacete the following year - a beautiful lob after a pass from his idol, Ronaldinho.

And it didn't take long for Messi to take off, with his 2007 Maradona-esque goal against Getafe perhaps doing the most to announce himself to the world.

After the introduction came the trophies, particularly after Pep Guardiola took charge at the Camp Nou in 2008.

In 2009, Barcelona won six trophies, with Messi adding his first Ballon d'Or to that haul.

And his display as a 'false 9' in Barcelona's 6-2 hammering of Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu elevated his status to a new level altogether.

And that level barely dipped over the following years, with Messi reaching his zenith in 2012 with an incredible 91 goals in the calendar year.

Two more Champions League titles came in 2011 and 2015, before the Blaugrana became domestic kings, winning LaLiga Santander five times in six seasons between 2015 and 2019.

But now, disillusioned with the club's progress, Messi appears to be on the way out.

Nonetheless, we take this moment to remember his amazing feats and celebrate the presence in Spain - for so many years - of the world's most special player.
