Mechanical Quartz or Digital... Which Watch to Choose? - crisslyn - 03-04-2020

Choose the look of your watch? Easy. Understand the differences between digital, mechanical, quartz or hands, then decide to keep only one? Much more complicated!

MECHANICAL, QUARTZ, NEEDLE, DIGITAL: UNDERSTANDING THE VOCABULARY OF WATCHES
Watchmaking is a real craft, with its own vocabulary. To choose a watch, it is essential to distinguish movement and display! The movement designates the energy that drives the watch and allows the hours to be displayed: it can be mechanical, quartz or even automatic. Automatic watches are very high-end and extremely expensive models, much rarer. The display shows how the watch shows the time. It can be with digital display, also called digital display, or with hands, pointed towards numbers. They are also called analog and digital displays, like television!

QUARTZ WATCHES
A quartz watch is a battery watch. This provides an electrical impulse that oscillates a quartz slide, hence its name. Quartz watches are the most common, acclaimed for their precision and reliability, but also for their price. There is a wide choice of models, with digital display or with hands. Their only weakness? The battery has a limited lifespan and must be changed every two years. A sometimes complex or expensive process, depending on the watches and their finesse, but a good alternative to breakdown…

MECHANICAL AND AUTOMATIC WATCHES
A mechanical watch does not require a battery, it is simply activated by winding. An automatic watch is a mechanical watch, but whose winding takes place automatically thanks to the movements of the wrist. The classic mechanical watch requires regular winding by hand. Appreciated for the finesse and mastery necessary for their creation, mechanical watches are the haute couture of watchmaking: real jewels , they are also very expensive and offer almost no digital display. In principle, they require a revision every five years, are less precise and more fragile than quartz watches.

DIGITAL WATCHES
The real name of a digital watch is a digital watch. And as its name suggests, it gives the time in the form of numbers! The digital watch can use several display methods, including light-emitting diodes or liquid crystals. There are also watches using a mobile panel system, in particular the rare mechanical watches with digital display. Many connected watches offer this system. Considered less elegant, digital signage above all has the advantage of readability, which is simpler and faster, even at night!

NEEDLE WATCHES
A great watchmaking classic, the hand display uses the movement of the watch - quartz, mechanical or automatic - to activate a motor. This turns the hands of the watch in order to point them towards numbers, letters, and sometimes even simple dots or symbols. More elegant, more traditional, this type of display can also be more difficult to read, in particular with fancy needles or without numbers
