COVID-19: Confirmed Coronavirus cases in US surpass 800,000 after more than 29,000 people tested positive in 24 hours

Confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the US have surpassed 800,000 after more than 29,000 people tested positive for disease in 24 hours.

According to new figures from Johns Hopkins University monitoring the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus, in the last 24 hours, there has been an increase of nearly 30,000 new cases in the US, and 1,080 deaths from the virus, bringing the US death toll up to 42,940, the highest in the world.

This comes after Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general  of the World Health Organization warned on Monday that the worst is still to come.

'Trust us. The worst is yet ahead of us,' Ghebreyesus said during a news briefing. 'Let's prevent this tragedy. It's a virus that many people still don't understand.

'Please let's consider those who are dying as individuals, they are not numbers or figures. Even one life is precious,' Ghebreyesus added.

In total, there are 800, 197 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US and 42,940 deaths.

Coronavirus: Human trials for new vaccine to start Thursday - UK Government announces

The UK Government has announced that a new Coronavirus vaccine being developed in the UK will be put to test this week as human trials could begin as early as Thursday.

The announcement comes as the Coronavirus death toll topped 17,000 in the UK, even though the actual number of fatalities across the UK will be higher as only deaths in UK hospitals are accounted for.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock speaking from Downing street on Wednesday said the vaccine was being developed at the University of Oxford and vowed: "We will throw everything we've got at developing a vaccine."
"At the same time we'll invest in manufacturing capability so if either of these vaccines safely works then we can make it available for the British people as soon as humanely possible." he said.

However, he cautioned that "nothing about this process is certain".

On the trial beginning, he said: “In normal times, reaching this stage would take years and I’m very proud of the work taken so far.
"The upside of being the first country in the world to develop a successful vaccine is so huge that I am throwing everything at it."

Discussing conversations the UK government is having with leading scientists on a vaccine he said: "We are going to back them to the hilt."

He added that work is being done so that a vaccine, if it is found, can be rolled out to the public "as soon as humanly possible" as that is the only way lockdowns and restrictions can be permanetly lifted and people resume their normal lives.

The Chinese nationals, Mr. Huang Haiguiang, Mr. Li Chaochyan, Mr. Lin Xiaofang, Mr. Qin Shening, Mr. Liang Xinging, and Mr. Huang Wei on Tuesday, April 21 appeared before Chief Magistrate Ruth Nabaasa before they pleaded guilty of disobeying lawful orders, an act likely to spread infection of disease contrary to Section 171 of the Penal Code Act before Nakawa Chief Ruth Nabaasa.

Prosecution led by Ms. Annette Namatovu states that on the 19th day of March 2020 at Kibuli Hotel Africa in Kampala that six Chinese nationals unlawfully or negligently escaped from self quarantined at the said hotel without completing their fourteen mandatory days against COVID-19 to Zombo district.

According to the court records, the six Chinese arrived at Entebbe international airport aboard Ethiopian Airlines on March 10, 2020, and had been subjected to 14 days of self-quarantine at Kibuli Hotel Africa but decided to defy the orders of the Ministry of Health.

Two cats become the first pets in the US to test positive for Coronavirus

Two cats in New York have tested positive for the novel Coronavirus, making them the first pets in the US known to be infected with the disease.

"These are the first pets in the United States to test positive," the US Department of Agriculture announced on Wednesday in a joint statement with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The agencies emphasized that there is no evidence pets play a role in spreading coronavirus in the United States. "There is no justification in taking measures against companion animals that may compromise their welfare," they said.

The two cats were tested after they showed respiratory symptoms, according to the agencies, and they join the ranks of a lion and a tiger in New York who were previously confirmed to be infected.

According to CNN, a veterinarian tested the first house cat after it showed mild respiratory signs, but none of the humans in its household were confirmed to have the virus.

It's possible, officials said, that the cat was infected by somebody outside the home. Someone inside the house, with mild or no symptoms, could have also transmitted the virus.

The second cat, in a separate area of New York, was also tested after it showed signs of respiratory illness. The owner of the pet had tested positive for COVID-19 before the cat became ill.

A blistered, swollen toe: sign of the coronavirus

Doctors in the U.S., the world’s worst hit country by the coronavirus have found a new symptom for the virus.

The symptom lies in the toes or fingers of the afflicted, especially in white people.

It is called the Covid toe. The good part is that it appears in both asymptomatic and severe cases.

The World Health Organisation listed fever, tiredness, dry cough, aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat and diarrhea as the virus’s common symptoms.

Now the U.S. doctors said purple and swollen toes that look like they’ve been frostbitten may be the latest indication of coronavirus infection.

The symptom could be the latest indication that one should get tested for coronavirus.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) launched a registry last week to track the dermatological effects that COVID-19 virus patients may be experiencing and received over 200 submissions from healthcare providers as of Wednesday afternoon.

Dr. Esther Freeman, a dermatologist and epidemiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a faculty member at Harvard medical school, is managing the registry in collaboration with the AAD.

Freeman said around half of the cases in the registry note these lesions in the hands or feet that resemble frostbite.

Others symptoms include anosmia, or a loss of smell.

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is another symptom.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recently suggested it could be a sign of the virus.

US homeland Security claims Coronavirus dies in sunlight in just minutes; Trump tells Americans to ‘enjoy the sun’

Donald Trump on Thursday, April 23, advised Americans to "enjoy the sun" after William Bryan of the Department of Homeland Security said at a White House briefing that there are “emerging results” from new research that suggest solar light has a powerful effect in killing Coronavirus on surfaces and in the air.

The White House pitched on the benefits of sunlight and humidity in diminishing the threat of the coronavirus as President Donald Trump encourages US states to move to reopen their economies.

Past studies have not found good evidence that the warmer temperatures and higher humidity of spring and summer will help curb the spread of Coronavirus.

However, William Bryan said new research shows Coronavirus is dying faster due to exposure to sunlight.

Bryan said a biocontainment lab in Maryland has been conducting testing on the virus since February and that scientists have seen a similar effect from higher temperatures and humidity.

“The virus is dying at a much more rapid pace just from exposure to higher temperatures and just from exposure to humidity,” Bryan said.

Bryan said having more knowledge about this could help governors when making decisions about how and when to open their state economies. However, he stressed that the emerging results of the light and heat studies do not replace social distancing recommendations.

Trump, who has consistently looked for hopeful news about containing the virus, was asked if it was dangerous to make people think they would be safe by going outside in the heat, considering that so many people have died in Florida.

“I hope people enjoy the sun. And if it has an impact, that’s great,” Trump replied, adding, “It’s just a suggestion from a brilliant lab by a very, very smart, perhaps brilliant man.”

“I’m here to present ideas, because we want ideas to get rid of this thing. And if heat is good, and if sunlight is good, that’s a great thing as far as I’m concerned,” the president said.

Earlier in the month, scientific advisers told the White House there’s no good evidence yet that the heat and humidity of summer will curb the spread of the virus without continued public health measures.

They explained that countries currently in 'summer’ climates, such as Australia and Iran, are experiencing rapid virus spread.

Armed Protesters In Camo Demonstrate Against Stay-At-Home Orders In Kansas, US

Armed protesters in camo gear, a Trump float, and the 'MAGA dance': Hundreds continue anti-lockdown demonstrations as supporters of the president descend on Michigan governor's mansion and Kansas' state capitol demanding states reopen economy

Armed anti-government protesters descended on the state capitol in Kansas while supporters of President Trump did the 'MAGA dance' near a large float outside the governor's mansion in Lansing, Michigan, on Thursday as protests continued against state-mandated closures of businesses during the pandemic.

Hundreds of people protested Thursday against Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s stay-at-home order for the state, many waving signs on sidewalks while others drove slowly around the Statehouse in Topeka.

Similar protests have been held across the country, with participants contending stay-at-home orders are damaging the economy and violate their civil rights. Health and government officials argue the orders are the best way to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Quote:About 150 people stood on the south side of the Statehouse or walked around the building with signs and American flags as at least 200 cars drove slowly around the building.

Many of the participants carried signs or waved flags supporting the re-election of President Donald Trump.

Other participants were anti-vaccine activists, members of the tea party movement and gun-rights supporters.

One vehicle was festooned with a Confederate flag; one protest sign promoted a far-right conspiracy theory.

But a recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey showed that Americans remain overwhelmingly in favor of stay-at-home orders and other efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

At the Statehouse, a few local nurses stood silently in scrubs to thank health care workers and counter-protest.

The protests came as the Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Thursday reported 2,482 confirmed cases, up from 2,211 reported Wednesday.

The state reported 112 people have died, two more than reported Wednesday.

The number of infections is likely higher because many people have not been tested and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

To help medical personnel respond to the cases in health care facilities and nursing homes, Kelly on Wednesday signed an executive order that suspends requirements that doctors supervise physician assistants, advanced practice practical nurses and licensed practical nurses.

The order also allows nurses with inactive or lapsed licenses to provide services and permits medical or nursing students to volunteer to work in health care facilities.

‘Our health care facilities need as much flexibility as possible as we approach our projected peak infection rate in the coming days to ensure that hospitals do not become overwhelmed,’ Kelly said during a news conference Wednesday.

Quote:Kelly signed another order Wednesday that allows sales of alcoholic beverages that are not in their original containers.

The order applies to bars and clubs but also would allow people to buy single drinks for takeout at restaurants.

In order to prevent drinking while driving, the drinks must be inside a plastic bag that is tamper-proof before patrons can take it from the restaurant.

State officials also announced the first confirmed cases at the Topeka Correctional Facility and the Kansas Neurological Institute.

One female inmate tested positive at the prison for women in Topeka, and two male staff members had confirmed cases at the state hospital for developmentally disabled.

Quote:In Lansing, a group of protesters stood outside Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s official residence, waved American flags and pro-Trump banners, and signs denouncing the Democrat.

The centerpiece of the protest was a large parade float, also known as the ‘Trump Unity Bridge,’ which had the words ‘TRUMP’ and ‘UNITY’ written in giant letters.

There was also a large makeshift wall with the words ‘Build the Wall’ written on it.

The bridge, which measures some 50 feet long and more than 13 feet tall, weighs approximately 9,000 pounds.

Driven by a Michigan resident and ardent supporter of the president, it has made appearances in several high-profile events, including Trump’s inauguration and the Women’s March in Washington, DC.

Several of the president’s supporters stood in front of the float and did the ‘MAGA dance’ where they sang and moved to the tune of the Village People hit YMCA – though they changed the lyrics and letters to fit the acronym of Trump’s signature slogan – ‘make America great again.’

The protest on Thursday appeared to be significantly smaller than the demonstration held last week outside of the State Capitol in Lansing.

Large crowds of protesters gathered last week at the urging of Trump, who encouraged his followers to ‘liberate’ Michigan as well as other states including Minnesota and Virginia.

The Michigan protest was dubbed by organizers online as ‘Operation Queen’s Castle.’

The event page on Facebook featured a photoshopped image of Whitmer wearing a crown.

Japanese mayor says only men should be allowed to go grocery shopping during Coronavirus crisis because women take too long

Ichiro Matsui, the Mayor of Osaka has sparked a backlash for saying only men should be allowed to go grocery shopping during the Coronavirus crisis because women take too long.

Mayor Ichiro was speaking on the importance of social distancing in other to halt the spread of Coronavirus when he made the statement.

'When a woman goes... it will take time,' Matsui said when asked by a male reporter about possibly reducing shoppers' entry to supermarkets to lower the risk of coronavirus infections.

'If it was you, if you were told to get this or that, then you would go directly... and go home,' he said. 'It's also fine for men to go shopping while avoiding contact.'

Matsui, who also said married couples should avoid going shopping together, drew criticism on Japanese Twitter over his remarks, with users saying they were sexist.

'Japan is a country where these words come calmly out of a mayor's mouth. Deplorable,' said one user today.

Another user said: 'When I hear remarks like this... I feel the need for people with diverse backgrounds to participate in politics,' the user said.

By Friday morning there were nearly 1,500 coronavirus cases in Osaka, making it the second hardest-hit after Tokyo.

In the whole of Japan, over 12,429 cases of Coronavirus have been recorded with 2,408 recoveries and 328 deaths.

The Japanese government since declared a nationwide state of emergency till at least May 6 in a bid to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Quote:Bra-Shaped Face-Masks In Japan Sell Out Minutes After Launch (Photos)

Fashion lovers are coming up with innovative ways to stay fashionable despite the coronavirus pandemic and one of such ways is through face mask.

Recently, bra-cup face mask memes surfaced online and went viral but a Japanese company decided to make them a reality and they sold out almost instantly.

Atsumi Fashion, an apparel manufacturer in the city of Himi, Toyama Prefecture that specialises in women’s underwear garments decided that applying the same design to face masks wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

According to SoraNews24, though the lace bra face mask started out as a joke the company underestimated Japanese consumers appetite for ingenuity and sexy underwear. The prototype Atsumi Fashion originally showcased got a lot of attention online.

The company promoted the face masks by sharing a photo of model and TV personality Aya Kondo wearing a lace bra face mask. The former “Terrace House” cast member came by to visit the store, and wore the lace bra mask.

Soon after, a whole collection of bra face masks was announced.

The lace bra face masks went on sale last Saturday at 1,490 yen (US$14) and sold out minutes after it became available.

The company underestimated demand, offering only 50 units for each color available (white, pink, lime, aqua blue, black), but a new batch of lace bra masks is already in the works.

Shoppers flocked both Atsumi Fashion’s online shop, Lingerie Lab and its storefront on online marketplace Rakuten.

They also have simpler designs available, if lace isn’t your style.

Atsumi Fashion added a disclaimer on its Rakuten storefront that the product was not meant to be a replacement for surgical masks, but can be thought of as an equivalent for cloth masks.

Getting your hands on a proper medicinal face mask in Japan is pretty hard these days, but clothing companies around the country are trying to alleviate the shortage by producing reusable cloth masks.

It waits to be seen if the western world will replicate this marketing success from Asia.

Quote:15 Countries With No Confirmed COVID-19 Cases

As governments around the world fight hard to halt the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, there are about 15 countries on earth without any reported COVID-19 cases. Since the virus infection was first discovered in China’s central city of Wuhan, Hubei Province in December 2019, it has recorded over 2.6million confirmed cases worldwide, with 185,504 deaths and 730,843 recoveries as of Thursday (April 23) noon amidst throwing global economies into one of the worst recessions in recent history.

But as of April 22, two African nations, out of the 54 that made up the continent, are yet to report any single case of the COVID-19 infection alongside 13 others from other continents.

They are Lesotho and Comoros. Lesotho has a total population of 2,139,031 people, just as Comoros has 865,950 based on Worldometers elaboration of United Nations data. While Lesotho shares borders with South Africa which has reported 3,635 confirmed cases, according to Worldmeters, Comoros is an island nation located about 180 miles off the eastern coast of Africa.

Comoros’ remote location may likely accounts for the lack of COVID-19 cases in the Island nation.

Other countries of the world with no confirmed COVID-19 case include: Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tajikistan, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and North Korea.

This is coming as Nigeria recorded 108 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total confirmed cases in the country to 981, with 31 deaths while 197 have fully recovered, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Lagos, Nigeria’s largest commercial city, also reported additional two COVID-19 related deaths on Thursday afternoon, bringing to 18, the total COVID-19 deaths recorded in the Nigerian state alone.

Aside nations without cases, there are also 11 human-inhabited territories or islands with no confirmed cases as of April 22.

They are: Pitcairn Islands, UK; Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, UK; American Samoa, US; Wallis and Futuna, France; Svalbard, Norway; Christmas Island, Australia; Norfolk Island, Australia; Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australia; Niue, New Zealand; Tokelau, New Zealand and Cook Islands, New Zealand.

Quote:72 Nigerians Tested Positive For Coronavirus In Guangzhou - China Writes FG

An official diplomatic document has emerged showing that the Chinese Government detailed how 72 Nigerians tested positive for COVID-19 in Guangzhou, China.

The document, REF. No. SWZ[2020] 0128, dated April 22, 2020 by the Foreign Affairs Office, Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government, outlined the profile of the cases and advised Nigerians resident in China to comply with the law of their hosts in controlling the pandemic.

The PUNCH had published a story on Thursday, April 23, 2020, ‘Evacuation: 72 Nigerians, 111 other Africans in China test positive’, which some Nigerians have mounted a strident campaign against, claiming that the story was false.

Some Nigerians, especially those who claimed to be resident in China, had accused The PUNCH of propaganda and spreading falsehood, saying no Nigerian had tested positive for the virus in China.

The official communication between the two countries has, however, validated The PUNCH story that the Chinese Government actually wrote its Nigerian counterpart, informing the Federal Government of its staggering findings among Africans in Guangzhou.

The document, which was written to the Consulate General of Nigeria in Guangzhou, read in part, “The Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government presents its compliments to the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou and has the honour to summarise the current situation of Nigeria citizens in Guangzhou concerning the COVID-19 pandemic:

“According to the data reported on 21st April, 2020 by the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, among Nigerian citizens in Guangzhou, there are 16 confirmed cases, 56 cases have been tested positive and 65 cases of close contact.”

The letter added, “We hereby kindly request the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou to urge Nigerian citizens in China to comply with the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Prevention and Treatment of Infections Diseases, Law of Frontier Health and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China, Public Health Emergency Regulations, etc.,support and cooperate with the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government for any work related to the prevention and control of COVID-19.

“Also, remind them to carry out self-protection, reduce outdoor activities, avoid going to crowded areas; do not organise or participate in mass gathering.

Trump Claims Disinfectant ‘Injection’ Idea Was Sarcasm, After Receiving Backlash

Covid-19: After receiving backlash, Trump claims disinfectant ‘injection’ idea was sarcasm (video)

Quote:Amid a flurry of backlash and ridicule, President Trump walked back his suggestion that scientists test whether disinfectants, such as bleach, could be injected inside the human body to fight the coronavirus, claiming Friday that he had said it sarcastically.

The president offered his idea for a cure in the White House briefing room Thursday after a presentation that mentioned disinfectants can kill the novel coronavirus on surfaces and in the air.

“I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute,” Trump said during Thursday’s coronavirus press briefing. “And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning? Because you see it gets inside the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.”

The question, which Trump offered unprompted, immediately spurred doctors, lawmakers and the makers of Lysol to respond with incredulity and warnings against injecting or otherwise ingesting disinfectants, which are highly toxic.

When asked Friday during a bill signing in the Oval Office to expand upon this, Trump said it was not intended as a serious suggestion.

“I was asking a question sarcastically to reporters like you just to see what would happen,” Trump said.

There was no indication when he made the initial remarks that they were not a real recommendation.

“My concern is that people will die. People will think this is a good idea,” Craig Spencer, the director of global health in emergency medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, told The Washington Post. “This is not willy-nilly, off-the-cuff, maybe-this-will-work advice. This is dangerous.”

China 'sends medical team to North Korea to advise Kim Jong-un' on his care after undergoing heart surgery during Coronavirus outbreak

The Chinese government has reportedly dispatched a team including medical experts to North Korea to advise North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, on his care after he underwent a life-saving heart surgery during the Coronavirus outbreak.

The trip by the Chinese doctors and officials comes amid conflicting reports that the leader of North Korea was in a "fragile" condition after the surgery.

According to Reuters, a delegation led by a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party's International Liaison Department left Beijing for North Korea on Thursday, two of the people said. The department is the main Chinese body dealing with neighbouring North Korea.

The sources declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the matter.

Daily NK, a Seoul-based website, reported earlier this week that Kim was staying at a countryside villa outside Pyongyang while he recovered from heart surgery and that his condition was improving after he was conspicuously absent from events on 15 April commemorating the birth of his grandfather Kim Il-sung, the founder of the nation - one of North Korea's most important holiday celebrations.

Dozens of top Government officials attended a flamboyant military parade at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun on the 15th of April, but Kim was nowhere to be seen.

The publication reported that Kim had heart surgery on April 12. because of "excessive smoking, obesity, and overwork," and is now receiving treatment in a villa in Hyangsan County following his procedure.

Before now, there were reports suggesting that Kim was in grave danger after the surgery. But South Korean government officials challenged the reports saying they had detected no signs of unusual activity in North Korea.

On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump also downplayed earlier reports that Kim was gravely ill. 'I think the report was incorrect,' Trump told reporters, but he declined to say if he had been in touch with North Korean officials.
