London Bridge terror incident: Suspect shot dead by police, two victims dead and five people injured

One person was killed and a number of others injured in a terror attack near London Bridgetoday before the suspect was wrestled to the ground by passersby and shot dead by police.

The suspect, who police say was wearing a fake suicide vest, was killed after police were called to a stabbing incident at premises near the bridge shortly before 2pm on Friday, November 29th.

Two people who were injured in the London Bridge stabbing attack have also died according to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick. These deaths are in addition to the suspect who was shot dead, she added.

Graphic footage posted on social media appeared to show civilians wrestling with a person lying on the ground at the northern end of the bridge, before they were pulled to safety by armed police arriving at the scene. The man, dressed in black, then appeared to try to rise, before firearms officers fired two shots. Police confirmed he died at the scene. It is believed that he was acting alone.

One man wearing a suit appeared to have removed a large knife from the suspect. There is serious concern about the condition of one of those injured.

Boris Johnson paid tribute to those involved in ending the attack and said “anybody involved in this crime and these attacks will be hunted down and brought to justice. As soon as we can provide further updates on their condition we will,” Neil Basu, assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said in a statement outside Scotland Yard.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to everybody who’s been involved in this and is anxiously waiting for information on their loved ones. As soon as we can get that information we will get it to you.”

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said later that no one else was being sought over the incident. Due to initial reports that the suspect might have had an explosive device, wide cordons were in place to ensure there was no further danger to the public, Basu said.

The national terrorist level was lowered from “severe” to “substantial” earlier this month. One witness who was on a bus going over the bridge said she thought she saw a “stab vest or some sort of explosive vest” worn by the person lying on the bridge.

Update: Man who carried out London Bridge attack named as 28-year-old Usman Khan, a former prisoner convicted of a terrorism

The man who carried out Friday's stabbing attack at London Bridge has been identified as a former prisoner convicted of terrorism offences.

The attacker, named by police as 28-year-old Usman Khan, was out of prison on licence at the time of the attack, in which a man and a woman were killed and three others were injured.
Khan was shot dead by officers after members of the public restrained him. Police declared the attack a terrorist incident as Khan was known to the authorities, having been convicted for terrorism offences in 2012, according to Met Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu.

"He was released from prison in December 2018 on licence and clearly, a key line of enquiry now is to establish how he came to carry out this attack," he said in a statement. The Times reported that Khan's release from prison last year came after he agreed to wear an electronic tag and have his movements monitored.

Officers are carrying out searches at an address in Staffordshire, where Khan had been living.

London Bridge terror attack 'was a revenge attack over the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi'

Usman Khan, the terrorist who stabbed two people to death on London Bridge on Friday, November 29, may have been acting in revenge over the death of ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Al-Baghdadi died after he blew himself up with a suicide vest during a US raid of the Syrian camp he was being held at on October 26 this year.

Usman, 28, who was previously convicted of a plot to blow up the London Stock Exchange in 2012, was shot to death by police after his attack.

The terrorist was known to security chiefs who believe he was one of 20,000 UK jihadi suspects known to police and MI5.

Colonel Richard Kemp, ex-COBRA security committee chief, told the Sun: 'If he turns out to be an Islamic terrorist, he was likely inspired by Islamic State.

'It is even possible his action was in revenge for al-Baghdadi's death. It's something ISIS has called for since the US Delta Force raid in Syria.'

Assistant Commissioner, Neil Basu confirmed that Khan killed a man and a woman and even left five others injured before he was shot dead by armed police.

Commissioner Basu also revealed that Khan, who was from Stoke-on-Trent, had previously been arrested on December 20, 2010, four days before he and his nine-strong Al-Qaeda-inspired gang had planned to plant a bomb in the toilets of the London Stock Exchange.

Khan was jailed for eight years in 2012 and then released on licence in December 2018. He was still wearing a monitoring tag at the time of yesterday's attack.

According to Commissioner Basu, yesterday's attack came after the terror threat in the UK was reduced from 'severe' to 'substantial'.
