Fisayo Soyombo, the Nigerian investigative journalist who exposed the rot in Nigerian prison has confirmed that he went into hiding folllowing security operatives' move to arrest him.

The journalist adopted the pseudonym 'Ojo Olajumoke' as he spent two weeks in detention, five days in a police cell and eight days as an inmate in Ikoyi Prison to expose the rot in Nigeria's justice system in a three-part series.

Speaking to Sahara Reporters, Fisayo reportedly said he is wanted by the Buhari-led administration for exposing corrupt practices in the Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian Correctional Service.

Quote:“It's true. I'm in hiding" he said.

His report which contained audio, pictorial and video evidence of corruption in the Nigerian judicial system, allegedly irked the Nigerian prison authorities especially the comptroller-general of the prison services.

The Guardian reported that Fisayo Soyombo was scheduled to speak at a workshop on fake news organised by Goethe Institute on Tuesday evening, but he pulled out of the event following threat of arrest.

Quote:“Prisons authorities are very angry and have decided to get the journalist arrested,” the source said.
“He is to be charged to court and prosecuted under Section 29 of the Nigeria Correctional Service Act.
Subsection 1 (d) of the Act states that a person is deemed to have committed an offence if he “procures or facilitates the procurement of communication devices for an inmate or makes conversation or aids the making of conversation through a mobile phone or other devices to an inmate other than as provided in the Correctional Standing Orders and other related correctional policies" a source said.

He has also vacated his residence where he just renewed rent and forced to go underground following a hunt allegedly launched against him by security operatives.

The controller general of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ja’afaru Ahmed has denied claims of planning to arrest investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, who exposed the rot in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

Commenting on the documentary which exposed “drug abuse, sodomy, bribery, pimping and cash and carry operations” in Ikoyi prison, Ahmed said those found guilty of the allegations would be punished.

Quote:A statement released on Tuesday evening read “The attention of the Nigerian Correctional Service has been drawn to allegations of drug abuse, sodomy, bribery, pimping and cash and carry operations in Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos.
“In view of the gravity of the allegations, the Controller General, Ja’afaru Ahmed has set up a high powered panel to immediately commence full investigations into the matter in order to establish the authenticity of the report, identify and bring the culprits to book if found guilty of the allegations.
“The CG who gave the directive in his office in Abuja today stated that the Service is willing to work with the general public as well as relevant stakeholders in the justice sector to actualize the policy objectives of transforming the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) into a modern reformatory institution that operates in line with best international practices.”

Describing investigative journalists as the agency's partners who seek the development of the nation, Ahmed stated that they have no plans of arresting or prosecuting Fisayo who went into hiding.

Quote:“Investigative journalists are partners, who seek the development of the nation, and called for more of such findings aimed at reforming the institution for better service delivery,” he said.
“He therefore called for more constructive engagement with the media and the general public with a view to strengthening the implementation of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.”
