Oil majors operating in the country have expressed concerns over issues of insecurity in the Northern parts of the country, noting that the situation has continued to hinder operations.
The Executive General Manager, CSR, Total E&P Nigeria Limited, Vincent Nnadi at a press briefing to highlight some of the firm’s achievements and programmes, stated that Total currently spends over $40 million annually on CSR in Nigeria, stressing that it is the company’s way of a contributing to the economic and social development of its stakeholders.[/color]
According to him, its CSR programmes are voluntary support for socio-economic programmes to promote health, education, economic progress and access to energy.”We had to deploy the use of project managers to reach areas where we could not reach. Security remains a big challenge to our CSR operations and the industry,” he added.
He noted that the company is the leading French investor in the country with over $10 billion expended on investment in the last five years.
He said going forward, the company’s societal strategy focus prioritizes education and capacity building in response to the need of host and neighbouring communities.
He added that Total’s ambition is to become the responsible energy major, saying that to achieve the feat, it created a Civil Society Engagement (CSE) in 2018 which he said was in a direct response to the complexity of the problems facing the world.”The problems present themselves as challenges in the environment and rising social inequality.
A call to action is therefore needed for businesses to provide support in providing solutions to these various challenges,” he said.He pointed out that Total’s foundation has reinforced its commitment with a special focus on youth development in areas such as safety on roads, youth inclusion and education, forests and climate, cultural dialogue and heritage.
