Nigerians in South Africa stormed the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, to protest xenophobic attacks directed at them in South Africa.

The protesters, mostly made up of victims of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, said on Thursday, August 29, that they are angered by the recent massive looting of foreign-owned shops in the city by some South Africans.

They complained that they lost properties and business investments when South Africans carried out an attack on foreigners on Wednesday, August 28, at Pretoria business district.

South African indigenes carried out the attack in anger after a taxi operator was killed by a yet-to-be-identified man. During the attack, they resorted to looting shops owned by foreigners in their country and mostly Nigerians were the ones affected by this.

The Nigerians affected said they no longer feel safe in South Africa and accused the Nigerian representatives in South Africa of being slow in responding to their plight.

However, Defence Adviser, Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, Abubakar Mustapha, condemned the protesters for venting anger on the commission by destroying some properties.

"The way they went about it was quite unfortunate, they scaled the fence and almost destroyed the gate," Mustapha said.

Nigeria High Commission officers later visited the scenes of the looting to see the level of damage done on businesses owned by Nigerians.

Abike Dabiri Seeks AU Intervention In Xenophobic Attacks On Nigerians

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said that the intervention of the African Union (AU) would be key in ending attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said this on Twitter in reaction to the latest attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

She said that although she could not verify most of the videos of the attacks, whatever decisions needed to be taken could only be done at the ministerial level.

“Sad, Reports from South Africa attacking foreigners. I can’t verify most of the videos. However, whatever decisions to be taken now can only be at the ministerial level. AU intervention may be crucial. This is not what we should be doing to ourselves as Africans,” she said on Monday.

President of the Nigeria Union South Africa, Adetola Olubajo, had said that recent attacks began on Sunday morning in Jeppestown area of Johannesburg.

Mr Olubajo said in a statement on Monday that the mob “looted several shops that were around the vicinity suspected to be owned by foreign nationals.”

Three persons were killed in the attack while another is still receiving treatment for smoke inhalation.

Olubajo said the police later dispersed the mob and made some arrests.

BREAKING: FG Summons South Africa High Commissioner Over Xenophobic Attacks

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Moroe, over the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

A meeting has been scheduled to hold between the duo by 11am on Tuesday.

A senior official of the ministry, Kimiebi Ebenfa, confirmed the development in a WhatsApp message.

It reads: “I am directed to inform you that the Minister of Foreign Affairs has summoned the High Commissioner of South Africa for a meeting this morning by 11. The meeting was confirmed a few minutes ago.”

Onyema on Monday vowed the Federal Government would take “definitive measures” following the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

He described the attackers as mindless criminals, noting that the police intervention was ineffective.

On his verified Twitter handle, the Minister said: “Received sickening and depressing news of continued burning and looting of Nigerian shops and premises in #SouthAfrica by mindless criminals with ineffective police protection. Enough is enough. We will take definitive measures.”

Speculations that the alleged killer was a Nigerian sparked protests, looting and burning of foreign-owned businesses.

The police had struggled to bring the attacks under control.

Xenophobia: 'My heart broke as I helplessly watched everything perishing into flames' - Nigerian car dealership owner laments

Several foreign shop owners in Jeppestown South Africa, are still counting the cost of the destruction left behind in the aftermath of their shops being shattered on Sunday night  September 1.

Two car dealerships in Kaal and Jules streets were among those damaged, and over 50 cars were burnt at night.

The Sunday night violence reportedly escalated to Monday morning when more shops were ransacked by a mob of residents.

Nigerian car dealership owner Kennedy Orji estimated his losses as a result of burnt cars to over R3m.
"I sell used cars and 30 cars that were my bread and hard-earned investment were burnt to ashes and I don't know why," said Orji.

Orji said he was woken up by friends and security who alerted him that his car dealership was going up in flames.
"My heart broke as I helplessly watched everything perishing into flames. I'm lost for words and aggrieved because my own black brothers and sisters did this cruel deed to me."

He said he had been in SA for many years and started the car-selling business from scratch.

Another shop owner, Micky Jacobs, said: "All we want at this point is South Africa sanctioned, because until that is done these xenophobic and criminal attacks will proceed."

Jacobs said he was earning a living by running his own shop to support his family.
"South Africans need to remember that during apartheid neighbouring countries fought with them, our fathers fought for them.
"We are Africans who are being chased out of our own African country because of unnecessary hate and unproven allegations," he said.

Jacobs said it was becoming a norm to use Nigerians and Pakistanis as scapegoats for criminality.
