The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria on Friday said it had sealed 505 premises where medicines were being sold in Katsina State.

The premises, according to the council, comprised 19 pharmacies and 486 Patent Proprietary Medicines vendors’ sales outlets.

However, the council clarified that the action was not punitive, but rather to ensure that the people of the state enjoy quality services in line with the National Drug Distribution policy of the Federal Government and the laws guiding the pharmacy profession.

The Director, Inspection and Monitoring Unit of the council, Mrs Anthonia Aruya, said these at a press conference in Katsina.

She said the inspection of pharmacies and patent medicine shops by the unit began on Monday, adding that the inspection was carried out in Katsina, Malumfashi, Kurfi, Funtua, Daura, among others.

Aruya said the owners of the sealed premises were expected to correct the anomalies that the team observed, following which the PCN would revisit the sanctions.

She said, “The enforcement team has been working in the state since Monday and has visited various parts of the state.

“At the end of the exercise, a total of 688 premises comprising 31 pharmacies and six 657 PPMVs were visited. 505 premises comprising 19 pharmacies and 486 PPMVS were sealed.

“Nine premises were given compliance directives for various offences, ranging from improper handling of controlled substances, unhygienic environment and poor documentation, dispensing ethical /prescription drugs without the presence of a pharmacist.”
