Three major socio-cultural groups in Benue State, including Mdzough U Tiv (MUT), Ochetoha K’Idoma (OKI) and Omi Ny’ Igede (ONI), have expressed disgust at the intention of the Federal Government to reopen old cattle routes across the country.

The groups were reacting to the statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari during his recent host of stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Benue State.

Buhari was reportedly quoted as declaring that the Federal Government was “working hard to open old cattle routes” for free cattle grazing in the country.

The groups at a joint media briefing in Makurdi, the Benue State capital yesterday, led by President-General, MUT, Chief Edward Ujege, said the re-introduction of cattle routes in the country was no longer feasible and archaic.

According to them, the plan was a complete contradiction of government’s economic diversification policy through agricultural production.

They said: “Why is it so difficult to accept the fact that Nigeria needs to adopt modern method of animal husbandry, which is ranching.”as being championed by Benue State?”
